Description

A limited series podcast exploring what it takes to be a successful student, in and out of the classroom. We’re given assignments, whether for school or work, but not told how to tackle those assignments. What kinds of skills, approaches, and mindsets should we utilize when we are trying to accomplish a goal? In other words, how do we learn how to learn? Produced by Saul Rubin. Hosted & Written by Saul Rubin & Danny Pittaway for Coastline College.

In the final episode of L2L we're unpacking specificity, digging into the specifics (yes, I really did make that joke) in order to understand when it's worthwhile to ask specific questions, give specific answers, and have specific goals in and outside of the classroom (I really can't stop saying that word). Beyond the benefits of being specific (did it again!),  we delve into the costs, including the frustrating nature of making plans and then watching  them fall apart, like a beach sandcastle struck by life's waves. We also take a moment to review the season, talk about what we've learned, and introduce a thematic metaphor for the show  as a whole that you might find illuminating.*Quick note: This episode includes the soundbite of Natalie saying the A-word from episode two. It's a positive usage though so definitely worth it!* Thank you to the listeners who tuned in every week. Please leave a positive review if you liked the show. In Episode Two, Natalie Tran introduced us to the 'wheel of support' as a way to envision the network of peers, mentors, counselors, professors, and more that can help a student in college and in life. Now we're going to unpack that analogy further: exploring  (of all things) bicycles and what it means not just to have your own 'wheel of support', but to be a part of someone else's too. Claudia Mojica, Natalie's former EOPS counselor at Coastline, spoke with us about the value of supporting others as a way to support ourselves, offered some  of her grandmother and mother's astute proverbs, and a whole lot more.  So roll your bicycle out onto the street and go for a ride. Maybe with a friend. Oh and strap on your helmet too. Safety first. Thank you to our guest,  Claudia Mojica, a counselor at Coastline  who serves under-served and under-represented communities  in college education. Claudia's warmth and wisdom shines through and is very much worth hearing .Learning to Learn is produced and edited by Saul Rubin. It is co-hosted and co-written by Danny Pittaway and Saul Rubin. In episode one, we talked about failure and self-compassion; now, in episode three we try to unpack what to do after.  Baseball, Basketball, Science, Practically Everything...it's all built around repetition, resilience, and flexibility, a willingness to make small or large changes (or remain totally steadfast) in order to improve or learn. In other words: adaptability. We spoke to two Esports experts who know all about being resilient and flexible whether that's in the real world or the virtual one. Plug in your PS5, boot up your GameCube, and stretch your thumbs and forefingers. This episode features an interview with Katherine Amoukhteh and Stephanie Bridges. Thank you to both of them as well as Dean Dana Emerson of the Coastline Esports Club.Learning to Learn is produced and edited by Saul Rubin. Episode 2: "Balance"

Episode 2: "Balance"

I'm busy and I bet you are too. It seems like we're all trying to balance our schoolwork, our work-work, and our social life (not to mention sleep, health, etc., etc.). Students especially are  asked to juggle so many things at once; it all starts to feel like a precarious see-saw. We spoke to a first generation college graduate about imposter syndrome, achieving balance, and being the first in her family to juggle these particular academic challenges. But I'm busy so I'm going to wrap this up. And I know you're busy too.*A note: this episode contains an expletive, the a-word, but in the best possible way. I encourage you to listen and apologize if it offends.*This episode features an interview with Natalie Tran, who is currently pursuing her Master's in Counseling. Congratulations, Natalie! You have  earned it and don't let anyone tell you otherwise (especially yourself).Learning to Learn is produced and edited by Saul Rubin. I fail. You fail. We all fail. It's a natural part of life and especially of school, where, with so many assignments, the odds are high that at some point you will find yourself disappointed. Instead of fighting against failure, it's important to integrate it into your process, to know that you are only human after all. This episode features an interview with Coastline College's lead mental health counselor, Claudia Vernon. It was co-written & co-hosted by Saul Rubin and Coastline's Student Success Coordinator Danny Pittaway and produced and edited by Saul Rubin. Welcome to Learning to Learn, a podcast from Coastline College all about, you guessed it: Learning! In our lives, at school, work, with family, we're given tasks and assignments without a roadmap necessarily on how to accomplish any of it. That's what Learning to Learn (aka L2L) is all about! Helping professionals and students understand why failure is okay,  how to bounce back, and keep succeeding.
