All the people who work on The Red Review live and work on stolen Indigenous lands across Turtle Island. There can be no reconciliation without restitution, which includes Land Back, RCMP off Indigenous land, and seizing the assets of the major resource corporations and returning them to the commons. In December 2022, the Canadian government announced its intention to award Lockheed Martin a contract to supply Canada with 88 F-35 fighter jets. Projected life-time costs currently stand at over $77 billion CAD, making this the second largest procurement in Canadian history. Is this the latest escalation in the new cold war with Russia and China? Or is maybe Canada already at war with Russia? We asked Tamara Lorincz, a fellow of the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute and organizer with the No Fighter Jets Coalition, this question and more. From the purchase of nuclear-armed war planes, to the supposed Chinese 'spy' balloon, and all the way to the Russia-Ukraine war, Emily and Daniel discuss with Tamara what this all means for the international working class and the prospect for peace. Tamara Lorincz and Socialist Action are both members of the No Fighter Jets Coalition and the Canada-Wide Peace and Justice Network, which are organizing a weekend of action between Feb. 24-26. There can be no reconciliation without restitution, which includes Land Back, RCMP off Indigenous land, and seizing the assets of the major resource corporations and returning them to the commons. We were 30 minutes away from a call for a general strike. 30 minutes. RankandFile leaked it, and militants with exec positions in large unions confirmed — at 10 a.m. on Monday, November the 7th, multiple large unions with the backing of the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Canadian Labour Congress were going to announce a general strike. This is the story of how we got to that point.Hosts Emily and Daniel recount that events that led this labour movement to precipice of historic mass job action — the OSBCU strike, Bill 28, and OPSEU solidarity wildcat actions. They are joined by Julius Arscott, a three-term OPSEU SEFPO Executive Board Member and 2021 candidate for President of the Canadian Labour Congress, who shares what happened behind the scenes and why a general strike is closer than in a very long time. You can reach us at redreview[at]protonmail.com and click here to join our new Discord server! He is an active community volunteer, keeps close to the grassroots, and is a passionate activist for Indigenous rights from Turtle Island to Palestine. He is taking his fight forward by running, as part of the Municipal Socialist Alliance team, to be Councillor for Ward 14 - Toronto-Danforth on a platform that features immediate housing for people experiencing homelessness or precarious housing; improved public safety by significantly de-funding the police and investing in community well-being; and rebuilding Toronto's infrastructure with climate change and population growth in mind.Support the show

He strives to end municipal politics being dominated by careerist politicians who shove money into developers’ pockets while social justice issues are ignored. Workers need a real voice in municipal politics. To know why a Workers’ Agenda at City Hall is needed just look at Patrick Brown, Dipika Damerla and Doug Ford. Mark Freeland says that the fight for free mass transit, accessible and supportive housing for all who need it, to preserve crucial farmland, to end racist policing, and to tax giant corporations and the rich requires a mass social movement.Support the show

That’s when TorCH: The Toronto Coalition for Housing, was formed. In the final bonus episode of this season of The Red Review, brought to you by Socialist Action, Emily, Flo, and Daniel interview Theresa Tait-Day or Chief Wi'hali'yte of the Wet'suwet'en nation about what Indigenous self-determination looks like to her. In the first half of this episode (begins at 1:57), Theresa demands restitution from corporations and the Canadian state that built on their land and took their resources without any restitution. Theresa demands that traditional Indigenous governance be fully represented when resource development is negotiated. Theresa demands an end to the racist Indian Act. In the second half of this episode (begins at 45:45), Emily, Flo, and Daniel unpack the interview and discuss how socialists ought to incorporate the first principle of self-determination for oppressed nations into slogans, tactics, and movements.  We wish to highlight that there are other Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chiefs with different perspectives on the Coastal GasLink pipeline project. It is not our place to decide who is right or wrong. We instead target the Canadian state and Canadian corporations with demands that center Wet'suwet'en self-determination. We encourage all listeners to explore other media if they wish to learn more about the different perspectives held by the Wet'suwet'en people regarding the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
