I read roughly 45-50 books a year, mostly nonfiction, but if a novel has a good review in the NYTimes and if it seems interesting (Oyamada's "The Factory" or, say, Korelitz's "The Plot"), I'll read it. But I can truthfully say I'd never heard of James Patterson, and after listening to the interview and then skimming a Wiki page about him, I don't think I've missed a thing. I just don't care for pop fiction and half-assed nonfiction done by those with dollar signs in their eyes.
It seemed more hagiography than biography.
It seemed weak. Maybe the book is more direct, but all the myriad ways in which Hoover trampled civil liberties should have been discussed. He was a creepy little fascist and he guided the FBI to destroy people.

So many questions I had, so many contradictions that I couldn't resolve, and after hearing this, things suddenly made sense. I listened twice and ordered the book. A brilliant scholar he is. It is the step described in Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions."
