My guest today is Dr Rudrani Banik. Dr. Banik is internationally known for her expertise in ophthalmic and neuro-ophthalmic care. She manages a wide spectrum of conditions affecting vision, as well as the complex connections between the eye and brain. What first got me interested was how she combines traditional medical and surgical treatments of the eye with nutritional and lifestyle approaches for a more integrated approach to vision and brain health. In this fascinating chat, we talk about what happens during an ophthalmological exam, the most common neurological eye symptoms, the effects of the pandemic on the eye health of people with chronic conditions, the importance of diet and lifestyle, and lots more!Do you have a Neuro Ophthalmologist on your care team?Links and resources:Visit Rudrani Banik, MD Connect with Rudrani on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube  Check out the products that we mentioned: TrueDark and Iris Tech You can find Kathy Chester atdisruptfitnessgym@gmail.com moveitorloseit109@gmail.com Instagram - @msmoveitorloseit @disruptfitnessgymPrevinex - Use the same clinically effective supplements that promote longevity, performance and everyday health as Kathy does.https://www.previnex.com/ Use promo code disrupt15 to get 15% offHere are some additional products that help Kathy deal with beating the Heat and Migraines.  Take advantage of the coupon code.Koldtec - Cool Head WrapKOLD10To save $10 off every item in store.2 items = $20 savings3 items = $30 savingshttps://www.koldtec.com/ Cold bean bag Releafpack. 15% discount use code Disrupt15https://www.releafpack.com
We all know that a chiropractor can relieve pain in your joints and muscles. But did you know that these pains might be caused by poor nutrition, stress, lifestyle, effects from medication, and chronic illness?I recently discovered the work of Rachel Sullivant, a Chiropractic Neurologist who is currently based in Michigan. She first became interested in chiropractic neurology after using it to manage her own debilitating migraines. This area is something exciting and relatively new in the chronic illness and autoimmune disease community, so I wanted to check it out.Links and resources:Insight Neuro Chiropractic CenterAmerican Chiropractic Neurology Board (ACNB) Carrick Institute of Clinical Neuroscience Education You can find Kathy Chester atdisruptfitnessgym@gmail.com moveitorloseit109@gmail.com Instagram - @msmoveitorloseit @disruptfitnessgymPrevinex - Use the same clinically effective supplements that promote longevity, performance and everyday health as Kathy does.https://www.previnex.com/ Use promo code disrupt15 to get 15% offHere are some additional products that help Kathy deal with beating the Heat and Migraines.  Take advantage of the coupon code.Koldtec - Cool Head WrapKOLD10To save $10 off every item in store.2 items = $20 savings3 items = $30 savingshttps://www.koldtec.com/ Cold bean bag Releafpack. 15% discount use code Disrupt15https://www.releafpack.com

She interviews people living with MS and experts in the disease to help everyone with MS. In this episode, I had a wonderful conversation with my close friend Jamie, whose handle on Instagram and TikTok is LoveWarriorHugs. Jamie was diagnosed with epilepsy at 18 and later with MS at 24, and we discussed life before diagnosis, the impact of her conditions on her daily life, and the importance of advocacy and support systems.Jamie emphasized the significance of finding a good doctor and being proactive in managing her health through medications and physical therapy. We also talked about the importance of reframing bad days, acknowledging limitations, and prioritizing self-care to navigate the ups and downs of living with chronic illnesses.Jamie's energy and positivity shine through despite the additional challenges she faces, including refractory epilepsy and trigeminal neuralgia. Her commitment to advocacy, positive outlook, and unwavering support for others in similar situations are truly inspiring. Jamie's message to newly diagnosed individuals resonated deeply - "Never stop."DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. As well as featuring stories of individuals who are living with MS on the podcast, I also like to shine a light on organizations that are working to offer support to our community. One of my favorites is Can Do MS, a national nonprofit organization that provides education, resources, and support for people with MS and their support partners. In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Julia Kender, who joined Can Do MS as a Digital Content Specialist. She told me how her background in journalism and social media helped her to transition smoothly into her role at Can Do MS.Julia passionately believes in the importance of personal stories in raising awareness about MS. She discussed the challenges of providing clear answers to complex questions from individuals with MS, highlighting the importance of seeking help and support. We talked about the unique programs offered by CanDo MS, including dedicated initiatives for care partners and upcoming projects focusing on men with MS. Julia expressed her excitement for new faces and short-form video content to be featured on social media, aiming to provide diverse perspectives and support for the MS community. If you or someone you know could benefit from their resources, don't hesitate to reach out to Can Do MS for support.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Anthony (AJ) McGinty's MS journey began when he experienced symptoms of fuzzy vision when he was traveling for work, leading to a full diagnosis six years ago. Like so many of us, before being diagnosed, he had no experience or knowledge of MS. As you'll hear, he and I share a lot of the same views about the importance of exercise and staying active when you have MS.In this episode, Anthony shares his personal journey of being diagnosed with MS and how he initially struggled to adjust to having a chronic illness at a relatively young age. Despite initial denial and shock, AJ now says that his life has actually improved post-diagnosis. He got married, became a parent, and discovered new career opportunities. This optimistic perspective on life in the presence of MS reflects his belief that the condition does not have to define your entire existence.AJ's advice for newly diagnosed people is to stay positive, avoid negative stories online, and seek support from the MS community. He emphasizes the importance of staying active and finding ways to adapt to the changes MS brings. His commitment to supporting others with MS is evident from his advocacy work, including his involvement in the upcoming Tap MS Out fundraiser on March 30th.Anthony's biggest triumphs, including becoming a black belt in jiu-jitsu and winning pro grappling matches, highlight his strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. His positive outlook and determination to stay active and healthy for his family are truly inspiring.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. In this deeply personal and candid episode of the Move It or Lose It podcast, I, along with my guests Julie Stamm and Dawn Morgan, dive into the emotional rollercoaster that comes with living with Multiple Sclerosis. We share our raw and real experiences, discussing how our days can take unexpected turns due to the unpredictable nature of MS, and the profound impact it has on our emotional well-being. We open up about the emotional toll of living with MS and how it can make even the simplest tasks feel insurmountable. However, our discussion is not just about the struggles, but also about the resilience and determination we muster to face each day. We touch on the importance of having a support system, whether it's family, friends, or the MS community, and how crucial it is to ask for help when needed.Despite the challenges, we end on a note of hope and empowerment, reflecting on the beauty that can be found in the hardships and the strength we've gained through our journeys with MS. Our message to listeners, especially those newly diagnosed or feeling overwhelmed, is to look for the silver linings and to remember that they are not alone in this fight.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. In this episode of the Move It Or Lose It podcast, I am joined by Adam Powell, my friend and truly one of the most inspiring people that I know.Adam joined me to talk about his journey after knee surgery. In this interview, he talks about how his knee suddenly locked up one day, which caused him to realize that he had experienced similar problems before. Although Adam clarifies that his knee issues are not related to his Multiple Sclerosis, I think you'll find plenty of inspiration in his determination to return to a health and fitness routine, and his plans for the future. Overall, the episode underscores the importance of perseverance in achieving success and fulfillment in all aspects of life.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Lyndsay Watterson has designed walking sticks used by Selma Blair and Christina Applegate. And if that's not impressive enough, she also performed death-defying circus moves at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. While Coldplay performed! After having arthritis since her teens, Lyndsay had knee replacement surgery at age 39. But an infection left her in more pain, so she took the decision to have the leg she describes as "not a team player" amputated. By this time, she'd already decided that, as a younger lady with a disability, Lyndsay wanted a cool, confident walking stick to help her find her own confidence again. So she created Neo-Walk sticks, gorgeous handmade walking aids in tactile acrylic, and lots of vibrant colors.Lyndsay’s mission at Neo-Walk is to see disability normalized and for designers to embrace our needs in mainstream products. She is passionate about inclusion and wants to use her success to shout it from the rooftops. In this conversation, we talk about her health issues and the frustration she felt when seeing the lack of choice when it came to choosing her first walking aid. She also tells us about creating her first walking stick in her kitchen, the reaction she got when she used it, and all of the amazing things she has done - and continues to do.Links and resources:Visit Neo-WalkConnect with Neo-Walk on InstagramRead an article about Lyndsay's appearance on Dragon's Den UKWatch Lyndsay performing in the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic GamesFind out more about the DMAT Fitness Training programIf you're interested in having Kathy speak at your event, learn more hereYou can find Kathy Chester at:msdisrupted@gmail.comdisruptfitnessgym@gmail.com moveitorloseit109@gmail.com Connect with @msdisrupted on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok Here are some additional products that help Kathy deal with beating the Heat and Migraines.  Take advantage of the coupon code.Koldtec - Cool Head WrapKOLD10To save $10 off every item in-store.2 items = $20 savings3 items = $30 savingshttps://www.koldtec.com/ Cold bean bag Releafpack15% discount use code Disrupt15https://www.releafpack.com

This is an Encore presentation of Episode 63 and one of my favorites from earlier in 2022.  My guest was  Shari Short, a comedian, writer, and, naturally, a developmental psychologist working in healthcare communications. Since her MS diagnosis in 2008, Shari has used humor to deal with MS, communicate about MS and cope with MS.In this episode, we talk about how Shari got started in comedy, her diagnosis with MS, her experiences of loss during the COVID pandemic, and why sometimes it can be ok to embrace the dark humor.Links and resources:Watch clips from Shari’s One Woman Show, “It’s My Mother’s MS, I Just Have It” – Mom and Her Support Group and Don’t Talk to Strangers, plus her series of MS Award VideosWatch Shari’s standup that’s NOT about MS – Being a Jewish Mother at ChristmastimeThink Outside The Product Box – an article that Shari wrote for Momentum MagazineShari’s 10 Tips for Making Your Pharmaceutical TV Spot as Generic as PossibleConnect with Shari on TwitterFind out more about my new DMAT Fitness Training programVisit Disrupt Fitness You can find Kathy Chester atdisruptfitnessgym@gmail.com moveitorloseit109@gmail.com Instagram - @msmoveitorloseit @disruptfitnessgymHere are some additional products that help Kathy deal with beating the Heat and Migraines.  Take advantage of the coupon code.Koldtec - Cool Head WrapKOLD10To save $10 off every item in-store.2 items = $20 savings3 items = $30 savingshttps://www.koldtec.com/ Cold bean bag Releafpack. 15% discount use code Disrupt15https://www.releafpack.com
Often on this podcast, we feature people with MS, talking to other people with MS, about living with MS. But this time, I wanted to provide an inside look into what it's like when your support person is the person you love and who lives with you. How do we make our relationships work so we can stay together, despite everything this crappy disease can throw at us? My guests are some of my favorite people from the MS world - Tyler Campbell, Chris Dunbar, Dan and Jennifer Digmann, and Julie Stamm. Many people I've spoken to on the podcast have struggled to get an MS diagnosis, but Roxy Murray's story is especially frustrating. A UK-based podcaster, MS advocate, and fashionista, she first presented with MS at 18, waking up one day with double vision and intense headaches. They were rushed to hospital, undergoing an MRI and a Lumbar Puncture - standard tests for MS. However, Roxy was diagnosed with lupus, benign intracranial hypertension, and antiphospholipid syndrome. It would be almost another decade before Roxy was diagnosed with MS, by which point their disease had progressed. But the diagnosis wasn't the end of Roxy's problems, as they faced prejudice and disbelief as a young person of color living with MS - a so-called "white woman's disease." Nowadays Roxy advocates for the visibility of people of color to be included in the MS narrative. In our conversation, we talk about Roxy's work as a fashion stylist, their diagnosis, and subsequent advocacy work. Among other things, Roxy is passionate about removing the stigma surrounding mobility aids and holding space for under-recognized groups within the disability community. And where possible, I asked them to bring along their partners so we could hear both sides of the story - my own husband included! In the first part of a two-part interview, we talk about how they all met and what their partners already knew about MS - if anything. We also talk about how much carers do for the MSers in their life.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
