Description

A less-than-inspiring exploration of disability from someone who is actually disabled. Heavy on the sarcasm, Bad Attitudes explores the reality of being disabled, how non-disabled people can become better advocates and allies, disability representation in pop culture, and the ways in which disability permeates society. Young or sensitive ears beware. N (always) SFW.

It's not unusual for non-disabled people to feel uncomfortable around someone who's disabled, especially if they're like me and tend to talk about their situation with humor. Their comfort isn't my responsibility, and I'm not going to censor myself to protect their sensitive feelings.Support the showWatch my TEDx talk Email badattitudespod@gmail.comFollow @badattitudespod on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and ThreadsSupport the pod ko-fi.com/badattitudespodBe sure to leave a rating or review wherever you listen!FairyNerdy: https://linktr.ee/fairynerdy
It's easy to say, "Just find something physical you enjoyed doing as a child," when advising someone on how to incorporate exercise into their lives. It's not so easy to do when you grew up disabled.Follow Imani Barbarin on Instagram: @crutches_and_spiceSupport the showWatch my TEDx talk Email badattitudespod@gmail.comFollow @badattitudespod on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and ThreadsSupport the pod ko-fi.com/badattitudespodBe sure to leave a rating or review wherever you listen!FairyNerdy: https://linktr.ee/fairynerdy
I'm smart. I've always been smart. And being smart is a central pillar of my identity.  I much preferred being "the smart kid" to being "the disabled kid."Support the showWatch my TEDx talk Email badattitudespod@gmail.comFollow @badattitudespod on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and ThreadsSupport the pod ko-fi.com/badattitudespodBe sure to leave a rating or review wherever you listen!FairyNerdy: https://linktr.ee/fairynerdy
For the first time in 100 episodes, we have a guest! In this week's episode, I'm joined by my good friend Jonathan Bradshaw to discuss his colorectal cancer journey, and the legal and social definitions of disability, with a little bit of nostalgia thrown in!Jonathan was diagnosed with Stage III Rectal Cancer in 2021 at age 40. His treatment included the removal of my colon and everything after, and he will poop in a bag for the rest of his life.  Despite being the largest cohort, Jonathan finds a lack of male representation in the Ostomate Community. He tries to be a voice and information source for men entering the poop-bag life.Jonathan's TEDx talk: Seat To Feet Investment PhilosophyJonathan's website: jpbradshaw.comJonathan's Instagram: @idbuyuamonkeySupport the showWatch my TEDx talk Email badattitudespod@gmail.comFollow @badattitudespod on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and ThreadsSupport the pod ko-fi.com/badattitudespodBe sure to leave a rating or review wherever you listen!FairyNerdy: https://linktr.ee/fairynerdy
What does self-care look like for you? It probably looks different than it does for me. A lot of what counts as traditional "self-care" may not be obtainable for someone who is disabled or chronically ill.Support the showWatch my TEDx talk Email badattitudespod@gmail.comFollow @badattitudespod on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and ThreadsSupport the pod ko-fi.com/badattitudespodBe sure to leave a rating or review wherever you listen!FairyNerdy: https://linktr.ee/fairynerdy

It's funny to me how religious extremists are so quick to proclaim that when the Rapture comes everyone will be put in their "right body," but their definition of the "right body" isn't consistent. If you're transgender, your right body is your pre-transition body, ie, the body you were born in. But, if you're disabled, the body you were born in ISN'T your right body.Support the showWatch my TEDx talk Email badattitudespod@gmail.comFollow @badattitudespod on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and ThreadsSupport the pod ko-fi.com/badattitudespodBe sure to leave a rating or review wherever you listen!FairyNerdy: https://linktr.ee/fairynerdy
