Description

Welcome to Uncommon Courage, the podcast, where we’ll be having the conversations we need to be having as members of the human collective. We are all being called upon to step up and lead – with kindness, big hearts and unshakable courage – because right now, we have an opportunity to redress what we got wrong in the past, as well as deal with the disruptions we face today, to create a better world for all. However, if we are completely truthful, the biggest challenge we face is believing we can do it – believing in our ability to create massive change. But everyone knows you can’t achieve anything significant without guts, determination, and of course, the courage to keep driving towards the goal, regardless of how hard the journey is! Uncommon Courage will feature global conversations determined to contribute to creating a better future for all life on earth. Ideas, solutions, arguments and laughs - it’ll all be part of the journey. It is time for that which is uncommon to become common.

When times get complicated, simple answers and solutions aren’t what’s going to cut it, even though we are bombarded with messages telling us otherwise. The growing threat of all-out-war, the calamities in our environment, and the divisions in our societies are all deeply complicated issues that require our attention and a deep appreciation for nuance. In our fast-paced, information-dense world, you don’t have to look far to see people quickly leaping to conclusions, shouting opinions from whichever side gained their loyalty, but are they right? Equally, are we all looking at these complicated issues from every angle? Is there something being said in the grey zone that is important for us to know and understand? Considering the dark times we are in, isn’t it worth us going the extra mile to appreciate the nuance of the biggest issue we face today? We think so and are looking forward to digging into this theme.  To help us discuss this and the news going on around the world, we are delighted to welcome Cheryl Benadie onto the show. Cheryl is author of The Wholeness Guide, and she is a career development consultant, employability specialist, a student wellness facilitator, financial literacy educator, and an inspirational keynote speaker.  Bringing the heart and mind together in her teachings, Cheryl will be a great addition to the conversation.  The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that’s getting everyone’s attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. We’ll talk about what it means to us, the world and we hope to inspire great conversations on the news that matters in the world today.  The Know Show is based on Andrea T Edwards Weekend Reads, which are published every Saturday on andreatedwards.com, and covers the planetary crisis, topical moments in the world, global politics and war, business and technology, social issues, and passion/humour/history. It’s been a harrowing week for war, with aid workers at World Central Kitchen killed by Israeli rockets in Palestine, which is ramping up pressure on the Israel Government to call an immediate ceasefire. Equally, Iran now faces a dilemma following the Israeli attack on its embassy in Syria, which killed two Iranian generals and five military advisers at its embassy compound in Damascus. How will Iran respond? Because it must respond, or it will look weak.Russia continues to make progress in its war on Ukraine, with NATO now deliberating a plan for long term structured support for Ukraine, but war expanding across Europe is a threat, especially when we hear the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, posted on social media about an unspecified threat to his country, which has been reported as we will go to war with Kosovo at a time of our choosing. War escalation, more brutality, ecosystem destruction, biosphere breakdown….  It’s a complicated time to be alive, resulting in mental health challenges becoming a greater issue all over the world, so what can we do, and how can we deal with all of this? To help us discuss this and the news going on around the world, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Alka Chadha, who is a practicing physician, yoga and meditation teacher, an NLP practitioner, a 'Heal Your Life' facilitator, an ICF certified coach, keynote speaker, coach, AND she also runs training workshops like 'Inner Journey' which incorporates breathwork, meditation, and yoga. What a perfect guest for this week’s topic! The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that’s getting everyone’s attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. A few weeks ago, we discussed the story of Bryan Johnson, a 46-year-old tech bro who cashed out a few years ago and now spends all his time trying not to die. Today he is suffering from long Covid, however he’s part of a bigger story about an obsession to work out how to live longer and healthier lives.  At the centre is the longevity industry – a multi-billion-dollar industry – and it’s goal is to target aging at the cellular or molecular level, as well as promoting healthy aging and improving our quality of life. The industry consists of several distinct segments, including Gero science, Biomedicine, AgeTech, and Finance, however, do we really need people living longer? And if we do live longer, what will that look like when facing climate breakdown? Essentially, are we thinking this through? To help us dig in, we’re so happy to welcome Dr. Zobaida Akhter from Bangladesh, who has a mission to empower people so they can value the importance of gender equity and equality in all spheres of life. A true commitment to equality and equity helps us to create a sustainable and gender-balanced society, where every person is treated fairly. Dr. Zobaida works in gender and culture in the workplace, along with media training through gender neutral language and gestures. It will be amazing to hear her point of view. The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that’s getting everyone’s attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. Did you hear Donald Trump say: “Right now, a number of state laws allow a baby to be born from his or her mother’s womb in the ninth month. It is wrong. It has to change.” Cray cray right? And yes, he really did say it. In Missouri, if you’re pregnant you can’t get divorced – women’s rights are really progressing over there – not to mention we had the whole IVF debacle which is sending people into a tail spin; and of course, adding to the “what will he do next” campaign, Donald Trump launched his gold sneakers, which comes with a whole host of further craziness. Beyond America: research has shown that every single placenta tested in a research study had microplastics in it: the situation in Ukraine is horrendous and we now know 31,000 troops have been killed while the US continues to dither on proving support; Mexico, one of the world’s most populous cities, could run out of water within months; and billionaires are not only building bunkers to escape when it all collapses, but now they’re adding flammable moats to keep the rest of us out.  No wonder everyone is a bit strung-out at the moment. Everywhere you look, something crazy is going on. How do we calm everything down and come back together? To help us dig in, we’re thrilled to welcome Chantelle Botha, affectionately known as "The Catalyst" to the show. Chantelle is a well-known expert in identity-driven purpose and is celebrated for her unique ability to instigate change among her clients. A professional speaker, life coach, career coach and influencer, she is all about helping her clients embrace vision, identity and purpose. The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that’s getting everyone’s attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. We celebrated Valentine’s Day this week and messages of love are flooding our social media channels, which is always a nice balm for the soul. However, then you turn on the news and see the shooting in Kansas City during the Super Bowl celebrations, the planned attack on Rafah still going ahead, X taking payment from terrorist organizations, the US reconsidering its relationship with South Africa after taking Israel to the ICJ for genocide, and of course, Trump threatening NATO members if they don’t pay up…. It’s hard to find the love. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, released an article on LinkedIn this week, and it’s a call for peace. Peace in the world. Peace within communities. Peace with justice. Peace with nature. It’s also a call to love and a call to action, for the greater good of all life on earth, and yet our leaders continue to move in the other direction. War is growing, but how can we continue to fight wars today, when the stability and resilience of the earth system is hanging in the balance? Our biosphere is on it’s knees, and yet war and it’s devastation is growing.  We’ve got to turn this all around! That’s just a flavour of some of the news we’ll discuss, so do come and join us and you’ll be up to date with all the major news happening in our world.  To help us dig in, we’re thrilled to have the Culture Catalyst, Scott Harrison join us this week. He’s an ICF performance coach, a leadership, sales and recruitment trainer, mentor, host of the Culture Catalyst Podcast and a professional speaker. We are looking forward to hearing his thoughts.  The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that’s getting everyone’s attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. We are back for 2024, so come and join us as we cover the major news happening around the world, with our theme this year on misinformation and disinformation, the number one issue in the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report, and with 49% of the world’s population going to the polls this year, it is critical we all learn how to navigate this risk. There is a lot more going on, from the latest Taylor Swift shenanigans to the war in Gaza, the growing risks of the Houthi’s actions in the Red Sea, extreme weather events, farmers blocking cities and towns across Europe, the ICJ ruling on whether Israel is guilty of genocide. This event was quickly followed by the announcement that UNRWA had members involved in the October 7th attack, resulting in countries all over the world announcing they would stop funding until a thorough investigation happens. With the Palestinians now forced to eat grass and drink polluted water, the situation couldn’t be worse. And that’s just a flavour of what we will discuss, so do come and join us and you’ll be up to date with all the major news happening in our world. The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that’s getting everyone’s attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. The negotiations have been taking place in Dubai, and breaking news suggests an agreement to move away from fossil fuels has been agreed, however, the words phase-out is not in the final text. What this means is the recognition of the need for deep, rapid and sustained reductions has been agreed, which is a milestone for a Cop, because no previous event has seen agreement on the need to move away from oil, gas and coal. Are we on the right path now? We wait and see. In the meantime, alongside Cop28, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato, with SirCollins Manyasi and a dedicated team of climate advocates, hosted a virtual event called ‘12 Days of Cop,’ with the theme #Its4U. The news surrounding Cop28 often felt dark and hopeless, so this show was a bolt of bright light throughout the negotiations, as amazing people from across the world shared inspiring work happening in all corners of the world, but especially on the front lines, where the greatest impacts are already being felt. So, what’s next? Our leaders - in government, business, the media and humanitarian organizations - have finally “read the room” and made a positive decision, which means we might finally be moving in the right direction at last, so come and join us this Friday, as we go through the results of Cop28, discuss #Its4U and what it means to you, as well as look ahead to 2024, and the on-going fight to ensure a live-able future for humanity and all life on earth. We will even talk about how we keep oil, gas and coal in the ground. This is the last Climate Courage of 2023, so come and join us, make sure you ask lots of questions. Climate Courage is a fortnightly Livestream and podcast published on Uncommon Courage, where we go big picture on the climate crisis and focus on the actions you and I can take to be part of the solution. Whether individual action, community action, or national/global action - every single one of us can be part of ensuring a live-able future for our children and grandchildren. We owe them that!#ClimateCourage #UncommonCourage To get in touch with me, all of my contact details are here https://linktr.ee/andreatedwards My book Uncommon Courage, an invitation, is here https://mybook.to/UncommonCourage My book 18 Steps to an All-Star LinkedIn Profile, is here https://mybook.to/18stepstoanallstar
When Mohammad Ali Jinnah understood his city, Karachi in Pakistan, would be under water by the 2060s due to climate change and sea level rise, he knew he had to do something about it and get involved – for his children and grandchildren. Pakistan is one of the 10 most vulnerable countries to climate change risk, and it is time for the world to come together and act, especially to help the developing countries in the Global South, who have done little to contribute to the challenge. The more we do to stop emissions rising, as well as help the Global South, the more people in this region can adapt to a changing climate and it also means less climate refugees, a challenge that will cause social chaos across the world. It is time to act, it’s our shared responsibility. You can sign up to Its4U at bit.ly/signup2its4U Join the Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1017721559112354 @RethinkingChoices on YouTube and LinkedIn @RethinkChoices on Twitter/Xits4u_2023 on InstagramUse the hashtag #Its4U when sharing the beauty of life, the dignity of all living beings, or how you are supporting local businesses to help your community thrive. Join us over the next two weeks for 12 days of Cop and find some inspiration from amazing people. #Its4U #ClimateCourage #UncommonCourage To get in touch with me, all of my contact details are here https://linktr.ee/andreatedwards My book Uncommon Courage, an invitation, is here https://mybook.to/UncommonCourage My book 18 Steps to an All-Star LinkedIn Profile, is here https://mybook.to/18stepstoanallstar
Did this year pass like lightening or what? It’s time for our last show of the year, and that means a wrap up of 2023, as we reflect on all the main news that’s been flying across our screens. From wars to political shenanigans, good news to living through the hottest year in 250,000 years, celebrity losses and moments that achieved headlines, and of course, what’s going on at Cop28, the need for peace, the health of the global economy, and why we must focus on developing strong resilience as the years ahead look to be challenging for all of us.Of course, it’s not all bad. We’ll talk about the word of the year, the person of the year, the stupidest celebrity or political antics we’ve seen, and much much more, so please come and join us as we wrap up the year that was. It’s always amazing to reflect and remember how much has truly happened in a year.  We are delighted to welcome two guests, the lovely Louisa Lee and Dr. Weng Cheu Yue, who both own DP Dental in Singapore. Sadaf Khalid is the global coordinator for the virtual Cop 28 on behalf of Rethinking Choices. She is a power woman, who believes in taking action and getting involved. Our oceans hit heat extremes in 2023 that have literally gone off the charts, and with annual peak temperatures not expected until February/March 2024, there is a lot of anxiety about how high the temperatures will reach, as well as the impact of that heat on life in the ocean, which of course, impacts life on land.In the Northern Hemisphere summer, we saw coral bleaching right across the reefs in this region, which does not bode well for the Southern Hemisphere summer, as well as mass die-offs of fish and crustaceans, extreme hurricanes, and tornadoes due to the intense heat in the oceans, and so much more. It’s definitely been grim tidings in the big blue for 2023, and that impacts us too.  So, what can we do about it? I wanted to speak with someone who loves the ocean and is very in-tune with the reality under the water, and that person is Elizabeth (Liz) Ward-Sing. Liz and her partner Brendon Sing set up Shark Guardian as a UK Charity. They are both professional divers, shark researchers and educators, and through Shark Guardians they run campaigns and activities worldwide, including in the United Kingdom, and across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. They really are doing important work.  With Liz, we are going to understand why sharks are so important for ocean health, what the situation is for sharks today (as well as other apex predators) and what we can do about it, as well as what we must be pushing our leaders to change today before we pass the tipping point and can no longer change the trajectory.  Do join us. This is an important conversation and there will be many powerful take-aways.  Climate Courage is a fortnightly Livestream and podcast published on Uncommon Courage, where we go big picture on the climate crisis and focus on the actions you and I can take to be part of the solution. It was reported - for the first time - that earth passed 2°C warming in November for two days in a row, and it must be important because it hit the mainstream news. Definitely a topic for The Know Show this week, as well as the fact we are all eagerly awaiting the release of Israeli hostages (women and children) by Hamas, but alarming news is showing the situation has become so dire in the refugee camps in Palestine, serious disease is starting to spread. Cop28 is around the corner, so the news on that side is heating up considerably, we’ve seen two far right election wins in Argentina and The Netherlands, and of course, the artificial intelligence sector has seen quite the spectacle in the last week. I know Joe will be eager to share that with you! As always, a lot going on and to help us dig into all of this, we are so happy to welcome Chuen Chuen Yeo 杨荃荃. She is an agile leadership coach, a LinkedIn Top Voice (Singapore), a published author with Penguin, one of the Top 100 Biggest Voices in Leadership, a keynote speaker, leadership storyteller AND she is also doing her doctorate. We are so looking forward to hearing Chuen Chuen’s insights. The Know Show is based on Andrea T Edwards Weekend Reads, which are published every Saturday on andreatedwards.com, and covers the climate crisis, topical moments in the world, global politics, business, social issues, and passion/humor/history. Do you want to drive meaningful change while doing your job, so you can contribute to the global crisis humanity is facing? Are you willing to look at the opportunities you can embrace to drive change and create awareness in your organization? If the answer is yes, this show is for you. Meet Andrew Buay, Vice President of Group Sustainability for SingTel and Optus, and he started his journey into sustainability more than a decade ago, when many told him it was not a wise career move. Today he is a sustainability leader and mentor, an executive leadership coach, a mentor to social impact start-ups, and a board advisor in social services and tertiary education. In this conversation, we’re going to go back to the beginning to understand why he decided to go this way, the path he took to leading in sustainability, including the pushback he faced. We’ll discuss the work happening today and the opportunities looking ahead, as well as finishing up with some hot tips for anyone looking to step into a more active role to help their business become more sustainable. This is going to be a great conversation, full of actionable insights, so join us live or watch it anytime. There will be fantastic take-aways for all.
The news is intense, and many are switching off, unable to cope. The daily reminder of suffering hurts the soul and infects us with fear for the future. What will happen next? Will it boil up and consume us all, turning into World War III? And what if we go nuclear?Hard HARD times to face - tense, anxious, and heart breakingly sad. How do we get ready for this? What can WE do? How can we manage our minds when we are being buffeted with violence?  Because, of course, it’s not just war we are facing. Catastrophic environmental news is coming out, with important research reports seemingly released every week, not to mention, the AI revolution is going through it’s own interesting phase – will AI be our downfall? To help us dig into this topic, we are delighted to welcome Archana Amlapure, who might be just the person you need to listen to right now. A lady with a deep background in technology and business, she realised this work wasn’t lighting her up, so she decided to become a yoga and wellness coach, and is the founder/director of Ojas Yoga n wellness, as well as author of the book " Health Happiness Harmony." The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that’s getting everyone’s attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention.
