Description

Welcome to From the Hip with your fabulously hip hosts Kath and Mish where we celebrate the ridiculous, the folly and the honesty of life-changing experiences of women in their 50s. An authentic podcast that speaks directly to you, however you walk through life.

FTH is  a celebration of women connecting via conversation.

And just for the record we'd love men to listen as well!

As women in our 50s who had major life changes, we felt there was a conversation to offer the podscape which celebrates all of our lives with candour and insight.

There will be a plethora of content including Erotic Literature, Work Life, Pet Custody, Generations of Women, Online Dating and Offspring - in fact the content list is enormous.

We do not claim to be experts and so from time to time will engage a fine range of guests who will bring their expert knowledge to the topic at hand. FTH is a weekly download for subscription plus opportunities to connect with the experts.

So follow us on Insta - fromthehip_podcast, on the web at www.fromthehip.live and of course on all your favourite poddo platforms.

And do send us your feedback, questions and/or suggestions - we love audience engagement. We honestly reckon this will be a journey of hilarity and punch – and we trust you will agree – we’ll see you up ahead!

Barbie may have a PG rating but how does a doll by Mattel challenge the patriarchy in the 'real world'? Kath&Mish get the inside mechanics of how blockbusters are released and the marketing machine that brings them to our screens.  Katie Page is an events manager for Village Entertainment and a woman in film who brings her extensive knowledge to a discussion which extends beyond the celluloid of old. With the phenomena of the concurrent campaign that mixed the testosterone-dripping Oppenheimer and the feminist-gaze  Barbie, we discover why audiences were bombarded with this new kind of PR 'roll-out'.Where do women in our film industry sit today post #metoo,  are we breaking the patriarchal ceilings of old and are our film schools generating a new breed of women? As a board member of WIFT (Women in Film & Television), Katie is unapologetic in her critique of the contemporary film industry and the current dilemmas affecting our future entertainment.Stranger Things’ subtitles team: https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/stranger-things-subtitles-captions-team-interview.htmlWift Vic: https://wiftvic.com.au/Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media: https://seejane.org/Conversations from the Being Seen on Screen Conference hosted at ACMI (with Geena Davis as key note speaker) are free and on YouTube: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmVd3Ba8-qeBGBwQ-jJXWkkBxga2XN75-&si=fAluvWcKACz97I4u
Kath&Mish have reached a certain age where some of the bands they grew up with now have gaps in their original line up.For example, the Australian independent scene recently lost two musical heavyweights in the shape of Louis Tillet and Ron S. Peno due to ill health and the rigours of their vocation. So what's it like to be a rock chick from that scene? Especially when you're in your fifties and still performing and writing, whilst losing people who matter to you deeply?Kim Walvisch is co-lead singer and pianist with the recently reunited The Double Agents. You can find their brilliant rock and roll here as well on Spotify.Together, the gals speak of some of the missing, as well as incredible influences on their musical maturation and we've provided a Spotify playlist so you can join in...More Important LinksThe Double Agents Bandcamp PageKim's Website of Professional PhotographySublurb : Kim's Insta AccountBand Websites:Died PrettyLouis TilletDavid Sylvian Violent FemmesLaughing ClownsLana Del RayBeasts of Bourbon
Kath&Mish knew they'd only just got started on the complexity of female friendships in Ep 41, so they gathered their compadre Melissa, and have pushed into it even further.Asking each other: How far would you go to maintain a long term friendship? What does the parenting role do to the depth and variety of your female friends?Do our daughters and our mothers have vastly differing perceptions of grrrl power? And why do some women reject the bonds of sisterhood in the workplace?
Welcome to a landmark episode of From The Hip!For the first time, Kath&Mish leave the confines of their recording space, and host a live event at the inaugural Sorrento Writers Festival on the Mornington Peninsula in the Australian  state of Victoria. In front of a sold out audience, our fave podcasters take to the stage for a special one hour conversation to interrogate the  question "Why Do So Many Modern Women Shun the ‘F’ Word?" Their guest panel of writers, thinkers and influencers are Jane Caro, Charlotte Ree and Kristine Ziwica. The result is a fierce, funny and unflinchingly frank exchange of views on what's been achieved, the current state of women's' place in policy and politics, the role of men, and the way forward no matter what generation or circumstance Australian women find themselves in.For more on our guests and latest books:Jane Caro Facebook PageJane's latest best seller is called "The Mother"Charlotte Ree websiteCharlotte's new book is called "Heartbake - a bittersweet memoir'Kristine Ziwica websiteKristine's latest release is "Leaning Out: A Fairer Future for Women at Work in Australia" Sorrento Writers Festival
For their guest it's a reckoning, for Mish more a 'sifting'.It's that moment when you have the confidence to look your often long term friendships straight in the eye, and ask: "Are we still doing right by each other?"Kath&Mish share some of those uncomfortable but necessary times from their life, and so does their guest Melissa (first name only) who returns armed with data and personal accounts.Have you done some 'sifting' yourself? Kath&Mish return in 2023, and get stuck straight in by asking what is it like to date online when you're a single woman in your fifties?Mish asks the necessary and impertinent questions as Kath and special guest Leesa give very different perspectives on how they've traversed affairs of the heart in a digital world. How do you keep yourself safe whilst being open to potential romance? When should you meet? How do you know it's worthwhile?Leesa describes the support service she's hoping to offer to new online daters, and Kath recommends a no BS approach to meeting potential new partners. And for anybody wondering about catfish…https://theconversation.com/what-kinds-of-people-catfish-study-finds-they-have-higher-psychopathy-sadism-and-narcissism-198755

One of the two missing pieces in our education system is teaching all of us how to have healthy relationships. The other is giving every Australian a grounding in financial literacy. When you're a woman in your 50s, perhaps single or divorced, this is the time when understanding what's possible would be bloody handy.Kath&Mish recognise that in the midst of rising interest rates, inflation and a rental crisis , older women need more help than ever.So what options do you have post divorce to purchase secure housing or even "rentvest"? (look it up).Kath brings in her financial lifesaver, Teri Maloon a Senior Mortgage Specialist with Integr8.What Teri reveals could help you find a way forward in your own situation.Teri's Details:Integr8 Website Link to Teri's  blogsBook a meeting
How does self perception change when you reach your fifties?Kath&Mish delve deep into what face they show the world, what clothes go with that face, and why developing their own style has been crucial in not bowing down to disposable fashion. You'll hear about the defining nature of scent, and why the awkward decision to leave your long time hairdresser can be worth the stress...Listen as these two women celebrate their differences, their friendship, and why it's important not to take yourself too bloody seriously!@fluevog@aesopskincare@chanel.beauty@buzzsprout@elkthelabel@balenciaga@meccabeauty@rodanandfields@victoriassecretaustralia@marcjacobs
In a new monthly schedule, Kath&Mish make their triumphant return with Series 3 of From The Hip!In their absence, Mish manages to break free of Australia by holidaying for 10 days in Bali, and returns with tales of a way of life affected but not beaten by the global pandemic. It was her daughter's long delayed 18th birthday present, and what Mish discovers about the island and her own sense of self will have you pulling your own dusty luggage out of COVID hibernation.Head to the FTH Facebook page or Insta account and tell Kath&Mish...Have you escaped Australia since the borders were opened? We've all had to do it.And even when you want to, it's still shitful.Kath reveals she's moving house, and the impact it's having on her and her two adult children wakes up memories in all of us.Mish recalls trying to sell a house during her marital split, whilst in the midst of a medical crisis, and Kath's younger self breaks down at Heathrow Airport, when she was forced to move back to Australia. There's still fingernail imprints in the runway.Once again these two open up on old feelings, precisely because they're rarely discussed, and lace them with new insight and oodles of laughter.Ever moved house? You'll love this conversation...ANNOUNCEMENTSo, turns out Mish did have Covid.Plus, Kath is actually moving! So From the Hip is taking a break to gather its energy, and gather its breath. We will return, re-invigorated.In the meantime, go check out our special announcement, see what you think....and subscribe to our Instagram!!Also, if you love what you hear, please share this podcast with others in your circle. It really helps.Talk soon,Msquared(Executive Producer)
Kath & Mish still feel under the weather... so let's get under the covers while we wait for them to get better...In this Series 1 encore, Mish discovers a book of explicit erotica from 1824 that she wants to share with Kath. The more Mish reads from it, the less comfortable Kath sounds. Laugh out loud listening. So what's the difference between porn and erotica?  And what did Kath read to a bloke over a telephone line that got them both very very excited?Warning: explicit language and adult themes.
Sadly,  Kath&Mish are under the weather a.k.a. The Rona…So we scanned the archives to bring you one of their best conversations from Series 1 of From The Hip.The gals will return next week with a special announcement. In the meantime, hear Kath&Mish reveal their explorations into what faith has meant to them, and how they make sense of it now.Great chance perhaps to reflect on what faith means to you?
No matter where you live,  two of the sectors most affected by the pandemic have been tourism and hospitality. For many people in these businesses it was either adapt or perish.Tanya Hanouch chose the former. As a means of Covid-proofing, the owner of suburban wine bar Wolfe & Molone quickly reinvented her business as  Quarantine Canteen, and started home delivery to grateful locals.Constantly innovating to stay alive, Tanya tells Kath & Mish about the best and worst of times, and the hard lessons she's learnt that's helped keep her doors open, when so many have been forced to close.https://www.wolfeandmolone.com.au/https://www.femalesinfood.com/whats-cooking/whats-cooking-with-tanya-hanouch-from-wolfe-and-molone
So...men.Discuss.Kath & Mish have had to face some challenges in themselves and the relationships they've had with men. No matter who you're attracted to, there's always going to be hurdles along the way.As the gals reveal, the more you know, the more you know you don't know.Mish brings in some insights from a male writer and a relationship professional for both of them to mull over and respond to, out loud, with you.Another episode of raw reflection, and new ways of thinking about old stuff. They invite all of us to respond.Links:4 Relationship Expectations That’ll Leave Most Women DisappointedThe Holistic Pyschologist
Last week, Kath & Mish truthfully admitted they hadn't experienced just how challenging menopause can be for so many other women.Kristin Bonner is one of them. She responded to Kathy's callout, and in this no holds barred conversation Kristin takes us through the last 7 years of feeling, at times, like a different person.Kristin says she wanted to tell her story, because she believes it's time for all women to stop pretending they're ok during what can be one of the most difficult hormonal transitions they'll face.Even now,  menopause is swept under the rug, hidden from employers, family, work mates and friends. Why is it still so often taboo to talk about? And what can we all do to bring its impact into the open? All women go through it, in some form or fashion,Even some men do, according to naturopath Kim Toogood. We're talking the big M - Menopause.Kath & Mish reckon it should be called something else, just to take the stigma out.See if you like what Kath makes up on the spot!In Part 1, the gals pull apart the various stages and symptoms of change in older women, and the kinds of treatments available. In Part 2, you'll meet someone who knows, first hand, what it's like to deal with the challenge of menopause when the changes it delivers are incredibly hard to deal with.Articles How do Naturopathic Doctors Help Women During Perimenopause? - Institute for Natural Medicinehttps://naturemed.org/faq/faq-how-do-naturopathic-doctors-help-women-during-perimenopause/BooksWomen, Hormones & the Menstrual CycleRuth TrickeyMenopause: Natural & Medical SolutionsKaz Cooke and Ruth Trickey
In this second installment, Kath & Mish join forces with writer/director/counselor Melissa Rymer in discussing why it's so goddamn hard to talk about changing sexual needs over the life of a long-term relationship.Could it be a fear of the unknown? Will the conversation take us into no-go areas that could end in tragedy? The gals also ask: why is there no education about marriage, and all the stages that go with it?Older men/women's sexuality, and the need to re-negotiate what matters...a satisfying end to conversational coitus.Melissa's Links and recommendations:I Am Just Saying Yes Because I Want You to Like Me: Consent in a Patriarchal Society (Part One)I Am Just Saying Yes Because I Want You to Like Me: Consent in a Patriarchal Society (Part Two)(Melissa Rymer published on Medium) Podcasts: “We can do hard things” Glennon Doyle/ Abby Wambach/ Amanda Doyle“Savage Lovecast” Dan Savage *R rated “Women - we need to talk”“The hook-up"(for the younger audiences)“Authentic Sex”Juliet Allen Esther Perel ANYTHING she does : books/ youtube/podcasts Instagram musts:The holistic psychologistestherperelofficialdr.alexandra.solomonyoni_pleasure_palacethe_yoni_empire TV:Sex Education (Netflix)GOOPThe latest series on sexuality on Netflix  Embodiment practices5 rhythms/ open floor dancing 5rythms.com - based in all states/ openfloor.orgcontact improv dance cimelbourne.orgMOJO dance “perpetual mojo” on FB Female empowerment Self-cervix online courses  https://courses.selfcervix.comThe Labia Libraryhttp://www.labialibrary.org.au  how to reassure yourself that your labia is perfectly normalPelvic physiotherapy- amazing hands on work to help with any incontinence or pelvic floor issues Orgasmic meditationinstituteofom.comOMGYES.comOnline portal into science around women's pleasure   ShoppingYoni palace onlineyonipleasurepalace.comPassionfruit (in melbourne) http://passionfruitshop.com.au (also run some fascinating workshops) BooksCome as you areDr Emily NagoskiTantric orgasm for women Diana RichardsonVagina Naomi WolfTHe power of Vulnerability Brene Brown or any of her books and Ted talksBig Magic Elizabeth Gilbert - AMAZING book on creativityWomen who run with the wolvesa bible The Artists wayJulia CameronTiny Beautiful Things Cheryl StrayedUntamedGlennon Doyle  TED talksBrene BrownEsther PerelEmily NagoskiMonica LewinskyPeggy OrensteinElizabeth Gilbert
