In this episode, I share with you some very powerful information about sleep health and your child’s learning, growth, and development. Anyone who knows me knows that I love talking about sleep health. This is often one of the first things I ask students about when I do student interviews. I want to know what time they usually go to bed and wake up. I want to know if they sleep through the night or are they often awakened. This gives me a lot of insight into the problems they are having in school. This is why we take a deep dive in the science of sleep and how it might be the reason behind why your child is struggling, behaviorally or academically. A good night's rest just might just be the answer.Resource: CBS News 60-Minutes “The Science of Sleep”Link: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-science-of-sleep/*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!
In this episode, I walk you through the process of what happens next after your child is found eligible for special education services. Your child maybe 3 or 13. I share with you what you should expect from now on, and also what you may ask for now that your child is receiving services. I will explain placement and the fact that eligibility does not drive placement while dispelling common beliefs about special education. This new condition may explain the trend in social communication deficits that are pervasive in schools and child development centers these days. So let’s talk about this new phenomenon and learn and grow together. Stick around to find out how this is different from traditional Autism Spectrum Disorders and if any child in your life might be in actuality experiencing characteristics of virtual autism. *EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!
In this episode, we talk about your struggling reader. Every year, I look at the referrals for special education testing that come across my desk and the #1 reason for referral is for children who are reading well below grade level. The #2 type of referral is for the Autism eligibility. It is quite clear that poor reading skills are a major concern for many - not just the teachers but for parents, too. Think about how you felt when you attended the parent-teacher conference where you were told that your child is “far behind in reading”. Maybe there were discussions about memory issues, not knowing letter sounds, not being able to sound out CVC words, and so on. If this has been your story, I share some very important steps you need to take before you even consider special education test. Why? Because sometimes a reading problem can be corrected with interventions and other times, there truly is a handicapping condition. So be sure to stick around for some important information to consider and also this week’s parenting challenge and your loving reminder. You definitely don’t want to miss it!

Life can be full of surprises - some good and some not so good. But when parents are dealing with something hard, often our kids are, too. And though our kids are usually our number one priority, ironically they often take a backseat when we're trying to survive whatever it is we're trying to survive. Our special guest, Sara Olsher, has a goal and that is to help parents help their kids during the worst thing that's ever happened to them — that could be a divorce or a health crisis. She leaves us with actionable takeaways that will help, whether you’re in crisis or just surviving life with kids. She shares what works in reducing anxiety and also shares with us why open communication is so essential. Our children need coping skills just like we do, and there are certain types that kids need long-term to be resilient when their lives get tough. So get ready for some real talk today. About This Episode's Special Guest:http://www.mightyandbright.comIG @mightyandbrightco*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!
WARNING: Controversial TopicLet me ask you a question. What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “financial literacy”? Is this something that only parents should teach their children or do you think the schools should add this as a part of the education system? I’ve heard many old school parents say that they took a class or two in this area where they learned how to balance a checkbook and learned about basic financial principles that may not have been taught at home. I’ve also seen on rare occasions, classroom teachers who turn their entire class into a token economy where students pay rent for desk and earn class money for doing their work. The token economy may work in an elementary school or middle school setting but what about in a high school setting? Should it be a separate class period dedicated to teaching financial principles? Well, believe it or not, some states are requiring this to be included in the standard curriculum while others are not. But why? To help us take a deeper dive, our special guest is going to shed some light on this situation and give you tools you need to address the issues with your school board. About This Episode's Special Guest:Website: https://www.financialeducatorscouncil.org/all-states-fail-financial-literacy-mandates/*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!

In this episode, we talk about a truly pervasive issue in the parenting world. Is it me or does it seem like kids just don’t do well taking direction these days. You give a directive and they say “no, I don’t want to” or maybe they just outright ignore you as if they didn’t hear a thing. As a parent, what do you do? Maybe you yell. Maybe you offer a sweet deal or bribe. Maybe you give them an ultimatum which kicks their defiant behaviors into high gear. Of course, the cycle continues. Well, there has to be a better way to handle these difficult situations at every age and stage of childhood development. That’s why we have a very special guest today to help us with this very issue. She has helped over 10,000 parents, so you’re not alone. About This Episode's Special Guest:FREE COURSE: https://cmp.works/successfulBook on Amazon: https://cmp.works/thebooklinkResources Mentioned:Book: Mindset by Carol Dweckhttps://www.amazon.com/Mindset-Carol-S-Dweck-audiobook/dp/B07N48NM33/ref=sr_1_1?crid=27YHT1JSD82PB&keywords=mindset+carol&qid=1693068550&s=books&sprefix=mindset+carol%2Cstripbooks%2C136&sr=1-1Drive by Daniel Pinkhttps://www.amazon.com/Drive-Surprising-Truth-About-Motivates/dp/1594484805/ref=sr_1_1?crid=32FIP8CF5YNK3&keywords=drive+by+daniel+pink&qid=1693068830&s=books&sprefix=drive%2Cstripbooks%2C255&sr=1-1*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!
