Description

The one concept that unites the worlds of music and of productivity is Flow. Throughout history, thinkers and artists have accessed their Flow States to create the important works that move us forward as a people. Often music is a key influence or inspiration. Derek Beres hosts one of the great minds–productivity gurus, mindfulness experts, founders, and artists—as they share their thoughts on Flow and the music that influences and inspires them. Each shortcast features three tracks suggested by the guests. Listen to snippets and learn the tips & tricks of high performers as they discuss Flow through the lenses of art and science.

Federico Drei is the founder and team manager of SnapFIT Tech, a company that creates and builds hardware solutions for a remote world.  His products are perfect for a remote work world. We had a great chat about music, of course, as well as what it’s like trying to keep up with the hardware needs to a rapidly evolving planet.
Christophe Vandeputte is a mindset engineer that helps his clients transform their lives. After receiving a masters of science degree in bioscience engineering, he traveled extensively and realized he wanted to work on the inner sciences of the psychology and physiology of entrepreneurs. He now challenges his clients to speed up by slowing down, which we discuss during our conversation.
Carl Pullein is a renowned productivity and time management coach who has helped thousands of people around the world get better at managing their time and become more productive using technology they carry around with them everyday. He’s written a number of books and is very active as a writer and podcaster discussing best productivity practices. He’s also a fan of trance music and EDM festivals, as you’ll hear about during our talk.
Morgan Balvage is the creator of Splendid Yoga. After working in a high-stress corporate career that encompassed banking, PR, and logistics, she decided to take the productivity skills she acquired and apply them to building her own mindfulness business. Her courses include the Mindful Productivity Project, and she helps clients put their careers and lives into perspective through her numerous online offerings, including yoga, meditation, and breathwork courses, and her Splendid Yoga podcast.
Todd Henry is an arms dealer for the creative revolution. The author and speaker is an expert on creativity and productivity, helping people and teams generate brilliant ideas. His first book, The Accidental Creative, was born out of the podcast of the same name, which he began in 2005. We also discuss his latest book, Herding Tigers: Be the Leader That Creative People Need, where Todd overturns misconceptions about creative people. His minimalist soundtrack makes for a beautiful departure from many of the high-energy Flow State-inducing soundtracks we feature every week.
Angela Howard is an organizational psychologist, culture strategist, and social entrepreneur working to build human-centric workplaces, better leaders and thriving communities alongside growth minded leaders. Her mission is to create more human-centric workplaces that send happier and more fulfilled humans home to further enrich their communities and society. She’s also a podcaster, and you can hear Centered’s founder and co-founder, Ulf & Steven, on her Humanly Possible: Future of Work Conversations podcast.
Corey Haines is a marketer, entrepreneur, podcaster, and investor, who runs the excellent marketing newsletter and community, Swipe Files. He aims to help exceptional products, services, and content get the attention they deserve. He’s consulted with numerous startups on marketing and growth, including SavvyCal, Evercast, Riverside.fm, Holloway, Beamer, and Timetastic. Corey brings a very personal playlist to the shortcast this week.
Mohit Mamoria is the co-founder and CEO of Mailman, an email management software that minimizes interruptions and increases productivity. Mohit is a “serial maker” who launched his first company at age 18. Talking from his home in Delhi, he shared wonderful Flow Music from his homeland as well as a song from a rather popular television show you might have heard of. We also got to chat about how to reach the coveted goal on everyone’s mind: inbox zero.
Diane Allen is an award-winning speaker and expert on the Positive Psychology of Peak Performance—otherwise known as Flow States. She served as the Concertmaster of the Central Oregon Symphony for 15 years and has been teaching violin for three decades. Her popular TEDx talk on music and Flow States has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. Flow States and music? This is right up our alley.
Jonathan Tzou is the CMO and co-founder of Rupie, a startup that’s leveraging thousands of curated creators to help build outstanding game titles & digital experiences. Jonathan cut his teeth gaming playing Counter Strike semi-professionally, though as you’ll hear during this shortcast, he spends more time helping out other gamers these days. He also used to curate music playlists for his friends in college and has a deep knowledge and passion for music, which makes for an incredible playlist this week.
Ali Abouelatta is the creative mind behind First 1000, a popular newsletter that tells the stories behind startups acquiring their first 1,000 users.  To date, he's covered the origin stories of Snapchat, Spotify, Airbnb, Tindr, Doordash, and many others.  We discuss his research methods (he spends an entire week leading up to the Sunday publication of his newsletter), productivity tips, and his killer playlist.
Kent C. Dodds is on a mission to improve the world with quality software.  To that end, he left his role at Paypal to focus on education full-time, teaching courses in web development, React, JavaScript, open source, and more—as you’ll hear in our discussion, he’s really big on Remix at the moment.  Kent is an engaging speaker, prolific Twitterer, and ethical coder, which is refreshing to chat about given all the issues with tech companies we regularly hear about.  He’s also a big fan of music, though not necessarily when working, so unlike other episodes, we front-load the music selections this week.
Jerome Hardaway is a Senior Software Engineer at Microsoft and The Executive Developer of Vets Who Code, a nonprofit he founded in 2014.  Jerome served in the Air Force for 5 years and then, like many veterans, realized how hard the transition from military to civilian life is, especially when it comes to finding a job. When he left  during the recession in 2009, he noticed that the tech field wasn’t hit as hard as other industries, which inspired him to take up coding.  His transition into software engineering inspired him to help others in his situation along.  Vets Who Code helps underrepresented members in the veteran community learn and break into tech.
Luke Burgis is a Washington, DC-based writer, entrepreneur, and teacher.  His latest book is Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life.  If you’re wondering what mimetic desire is, don’t worry, we get to that near the end of our talk.  Balancing his roles teaching business at The Catholic University of America and writing an excellent Substack called Mimetic Mondays (as well as a number of other projects) takes a lot of skill.  We discuss Luke's productivity habits and the music that fuels him for work and life.
Daniela Corrente is the CEO and co-founder of Reel, an important startup that empowers financial independence by enabling users to automatize savings to put toward the products and services they want to buy. What this means is not using credit to get what you want, but, as we discuss during our talk, learning how to be financially independent by being financially responsible. We also chat about how music moves her—as you’ll hear, it’s a very upbeat playlist—as well as her productivity habits and her journey as a Latina founder in the tech industry.
James Beshara is an angel investor, start-up founder, author, and podcaster. He has invested in numerous companies, including Clubhouse, Mercury, Halo Top, and over 50 others. James has had one exit, selling the crowdfunding platform Tilt to Airbnb. His most recent company is Magic Mind, the “world’s first productivity drink." James is a highly productive founder who uses music to get into Flow States on a daily basis—in fact, the talk begins with one of his own songs as a music producer.
