What are your New Year's resolutions? Are they helpful and how did Paul make goals for his ministry? Instead of setting a new resolution this year, we wonder about challenging our own assumptions about authority and power and reflecting on how we use the authority and power we have in the spheres that God has granted. We wonder what it would be like if we set a new year’s goal to embrace our limits.
In the Christmas episode of PRAXOLOGIE, Sean and Tyler examine all of Luke chapter 2 looking for the relationship of authority and power related to Jesus. Then after a festive lightning round they will get practical and see what we can learn from Luke 2 on our own relating to authority and power in this season.
In this episode, Sean welcomes a special guest and both continue their discussion of  biblical approaches to authority, power, and how to use it wisely.
In this episode, Sean welcomes a special guest and both discuss biblical approaches to authority.
All believers have been granted authority by Jesus in the Great Commission but how does this relate to people and processes on teams? Authority is often an issue that creates division instead of building up. Sean and Tyler examine how to think about biblical authority that leads to encouragement and empowerment rather than guilt and shame dynamics. Sources: These are referenced with some being suggestions from Kilian, producer of this episode who did his undergraduate dissertation on a related topic.Cormack, D., - Team Spirit: People Working with People. Frost, M. & Hirsch, A., - The Shaping of Things to Come: Innovation and Mission for the 21st Century Church.Hardy, A. Is spiritual formation found in the Bible? Does it involve the use of theology or is it purely just spiritual exercise?  The key is focus on a full picture of God’s character. Sean and Tyler show this by interacting with a text from Diane Chandler that discuss various dimensions that are included in the realm of spiritual formation. They draw conclusions that, perhaps, several more dimensions should be added. They then begin showing instances of spiritual formation that are found in the Old Testament and how it is connected into a broader theological exercise. Resources and Sources Mentioned: Diane J. In this episode, Sean and Tyler conclude the series on a biblical theology of mission. They discuss the connection of mission and holiness, bringing it Old and New Testament themes of mission, from Acts through Revelation. In the New Testament, the disciples are pulled in close to Jesus and then Jesus sends thrusts them outward. The Church becomes a reflection of God’s holy action in the world. Missional presence and holiness on mission are key phrases to summarize a biblical theology of mission.Resources:New Dictionary of Biblical TheologyG.K.  In this episode, Tyler and Sean carry forward a theology of mission from the Old Testament and connect it with intertestamental period developments and the New Testament. The Intertestamental Period was quiet and God did not directly speak, but he was active in many ways. This culminates with the coming of Jesus Christ in the Gospels. Tyler and Sean talk about the ministry strategy of Jesus and how it connects being with doing. Jesus is also the splitting point of history where the mission strategy of holiness attracting the nations turns into missional presence of holiness while going out to the nations!Resources:Donald E. Does Leviticus talk about mission? In this episode, Sean and Tyler continue in the series on developing a biblical theology of mission by focusing on areas of the Old Testament that are usually ignored. They talkabout the idea of missional holiness from Leviticus through the Davidic Kingdom in 1 and 2 Samuel. Holiness is a reflection of God’s character andserves as an extension of his missional presence in the world.Resources:New Dictionary of Biblical Theology: Exploring the Unity and Diversity of Scripture by Alexander, Rosner, Carson, and Goldsworthy
