The mission of NAMI Summit County is to improve the quality of life for families and individuals who are impacted by mental illness through support, education, and advocacy.NAMI Summit County was named Affiliate of the Year in April 2021 by NAMI Ohio. In 2018, NAMI Summit County was presented with an Award of Excellence at the Morgan Impact Awards Dinner for exemplary leadership by facilitating partnerships among organizations and finding ways to focus on solutions, not problems. After relocating to the Akron area in 2000, Leslie volunteered for NAMI Summit County as well as other Summit County nonprofits. Prior to that, Leslie practiced law in Morristown, New Jersey concentrating in corporate and real estate litigation. She served as Law Clerk to the Honorable John J. Harper, Superior Court of New Jersey, and is a graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law and Cedar Crest College. Wayne Nieman is the Senior Development Director for the Great Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America, headquartered in Stow, Ohio. He started his career in 2013, serving the Scouting program in Akron, and he now oversees development and fundraising in Greater Akron and the Mahoning Valley.A native of Alliance, Ohio, and current resident of Akron’s North Hill neighborhood, Wayne graduated from the University of Akron in 2011 with degrees in Secondary Education and History. After a brief career in education, he made a change to the nonprofit sector. Wayne is a Rotarian (current member of the Boardman Rotary Club, former member of Hudson Clocktower Rotary), current Vice President and Treasurer for Northeast Ohio Roy Hobbs baseball, Leadership Hudson Class of 2019 graduate, and State of Mind Hudson Board member.Dr. Jake Protivnak is a Professor and Counseling Program Director in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Counseling at Youngstown State University. He is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, Licensed Professional School Counselor, and a Nationally Certified Counselor.  Jake has almost 20 years of experience as a counselor educator, counselor, and supervisor working in clinical mental health, school, and college settings focusing primarily on counseling children, adolescents, and college-aged adults. Piper's Key was formed in memory of Piper Grace, who passed away after 27 days on Earth due to the effects of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 0 (the rarest form of SMA). Had Piper survived her rare disease, she would be living with multiple disabilities and would need opportunities to grow a positive self-concept. It was through Dr. Jessica’s grief that propelled her to ensure that Piper’s siblings were able to say their sister’s name without the heavy sadness constantly associated with her passing.Additionally, Dr. Jessica received her Bachelor of Arts degree from The Ohio State University in Speech and Hearing Sciences followed by her clinical Doctorate of Audiology from the University of Akron via the Northeast Ohio Au.D. Consortium (NOAC). She is currently an educational audiologist at Summit Educational Service Center in Cuyahoga Falls advocating for the needs of students with hearing and listening needs within multiple districts throughout Northeast Ohio.Most importantly, Dr. Jessica is a mom and wife who loves spending time with her living daughter Quinn, her son Leo, and her husband Ryan!
