US Navy Veteran Jenna Carlton joined us this week. Jenna walked us through her time growing up in Wisconsin to why she decided to join the Navy. We learned about how she went from a very small town to being deployed on to an aircraft carrier. Jenna shared a little about life on an aircraft carrier and some of the ports they visited while deployed. Spoke about her decision to leave the Navy and now go to school. This is where she thought she thought she wanted to be in politics, but learned, that wasn't going to be the life for her. This is where she reconnected with serving and specifically serving her fellow veterans. At this time, some friends and her created The Millennial Veteran Facebook Group. A group where veterans could have a safe space to talk with other veterans and even find help. Jenna also launched her Podcast Vet Chats, where she has other veterans on to share their stories. Last, we learned how her book "The Veteran Workbook" came to be. Eric was excited for another Herostock 2023 reunion with Joe Allen Christi this week. Joe, a 24 year year veteran of the Air Force, turned independent music artist had a great story. From. growing up in Corpus Christi, Texas to joining the military and traveling the world doing finance for the Air Force. Shared how he met his wife in Panama, and was welcomed with open arms by her family. While being shipped all over the world, he decided in his late thirties to start learning and doing new things. this is where he started running Spartan Races. While on the learning kick, he decided to start singing and playing guitar leading to the man we are talking to today. He is now a Country Music singer with a passion for his music and his family. This week we had National Guard and Marine Corp Veteran Barbara Sim. Barbara opened up about how much her family moved in her earlier years of growing up, even with some time living in Scotland. Once her family settled in more during her teenage years, and once out of High School. Barbara followed in her sisters' footsteps and joined the National Guard and after two years there made the move to the Marine Corp. While in the Marine Corp she ended up in Okinawa, and eventually on a deployment to Iraq. Have to listen for the stories there. Once she decided to leave the Marine Corp, she ran some though some personal growth for a few years before finding music amongst other things. While hiking the Appalachian Trail, she sang and taught herself to play the guitar. this led to her beginning to do some gigs and sharing her talents with others. This is where she began to feel at home even buying a van to travel the country while singing. Barbara is also part of Operation Encore. Ken Sallee joined us this week. This show has been a long time in the making and we were happy it finally happened. Ken is an Army Veteran, that was kind enough to share his story growing up and why he joined the US Army. We learned of his journey in the Army, including a deployment to Kosovo. After an injury that he sustained, Ken was medically discharged from the Army. At that point he continued in IT as a civilian contractor with the Army until just last year. Around the time Covid had started Ken found some beard products videos on YouTube, and began following along with the community eventually moving in to doing his own beard content. As he took the time to learn how social media worked, he also launched a YouTube channel where he helped other content creators fine tune their YouTube channels. What great stories George Retana had to share with us this week. George, a Marine Corp Veteran, husband, father of 4(girl dad), survivor (listen to learn more), college student, and President/Chaplain of Veterans in Action Inc. We had the opportunity to learn what made him join the Marine Corp, along with his not so normal journey through Boot Camp. Eddie shared how he was deployed and found a love for being in the middle of everything. Deployment became what he wanted, so when he was looking to re enlist and the Marine Corp was only offering recruiting duty, he felt it was time to leave. He ended up working for a private contractor out of country for a few years. After all that, going back to civilian life was not easy and Eddie shares some really great stories on that. We had the opportunity to speak with Mark E. Petersen and Andrea Eichmann from The People's Patriot Project this week. Both Mark and Andrea shared a bit about their lives growing up which both culminated in them becoming Teachers and meeting at a Teachers Conference. We were able to learn how The People's Patriot Project came to be. an organization that helps both Veterans and First Responders. They help provide resources to those who need it. Amanda Huffman, a, Air Force veteran turned Mom and Author joined us this week. We learned about her journey to joining the Air Force. One not like the many we have heard. Not a lot of family members had previously been in the military. She gained her knowledge through what happened during 9/11. While in College she made the decision that she wanted to join. Due to a conversation with a friend took a longer journey to get there, but ended up becoming a Civil Engineer in the Air Force. Amanda shared some stories about her 9 month deployed in Afghanistan and some of her experiences there. Her becoming a mother led her to ultimately stepping away from her military service. After being out she felt she needed to do more, which compelled her to start her podcast and talking to female veterans about their stories. That turned in to a book called "Women of the Military". She has also written a book that empowers young women on giving them the facts of joining the military, and everything surrounding that decision. On this weeks Episode of The Contagion Effect, we were joined by Chris "Preach" Kniss with Doose Outfitters Ministry. Chris is an Air Force Veteran who grew up in Nebraska and ended up back there to settle his roots. Chris shared his time in Law Enforcement and working on different ranches after being medically retired from the Air Force. Preach told us how him and Ms J(his wife) came to start Doose Outfitters Ministry. Now they are doing amazing things through their ministry, like guiding hunts for veterans. They are also currently raising money to hopefully purchase an equine facility to offer Equine therapy along with larger events and even hunting on the property. Jason Rhodes was our guest this week. Come watch/listen to this US Navy Veteran share his story. Jason didn't have the normal path to joining the military, but it is a great story. We learned about his time in the Gulf outside of Iraq, and also that he worked to different Destroyers. Both of which he also helped de commission. His transition in to civilian life was not necessarily easy, but he found his place and worked through it. this is what led hime to start his non-profit RenoVet. Where he helps disabled veterans renovate their homes to fit their needs. In order to help raise funds for RenoVet, Jason decided to walk from Sanford, North Carolina to Austin, Texas. Along the way he documented his travels through his social media. This walk was almost 1400 miles and he just did with himself and a Ruck sack. France Mahabub joined us this week on the Contagion Effect. France served 18 years in the US Marine Corp where he was medically retired due to a previous injury from an IED attack. France shared his early life where his mom moved the family from Trinidad to New York, to his multiple deployments while in the Marines. He eventually moved to recruiting within the Marines where he found his niche. After retiring he started the Atlas Rising Initiative where they supported veterans transitioning from military life to civilian life.
