On this episode of Food Allergy Talk, I welcome food allergy mom and advocate for people with food allergies – especially when it comes to kids – Natalie Rice who is well known on social media as the Food Allergy Detection Dog Handler for Detective Harley! Natalie can often be seen alongside Harley as she sniffs out the mysteries of food allergies, and they educate, empower, and encourage empathy for people with food allergies. Today we are going to chat with Natalie about her personal connection to food allergies, what led to her becoming the handler of a food allergy detection dog, her work with Red Sneakers for Oakley, and her free educational app for kids – Detective Harley’s Food Allergy Game. About Natalie and Harley, from their website (https://www.detectiveharleyfadd.com): Harley is a Golden Retriever allergen alert service dog trained to detect peanuts. The decision to get Harley was solidified after a bullying incident that took our vigilant-but-not-alarmist outlook over my daughter's peanut allergy to a new level that put the life-threatening reality of anaphylaxis at the forefront of everything. Trained by Kathy Watters of Nosey Dog Detection Partners, Harley has an important job in our every day life by providing another layer of protection, making life outside of the house safer. When the pandemic hit, like everyone else, we were stuck in the house, but Harley still needed to work (to keep her skills up) and wanted to work (because she enjoys it - it's a game to her). We started posting videos of her working on Instagram to raise awareness about the dangers of food allergies and cross-contact. We saw so many positive responses, but also negative ones. It was the negative responses that made us realize the enormous lack of understanding of food allergies and that they need to be taken seriously. They are a life-threatening medical condition. This is why I created Detective Harley, F.A.D.D. (Food Allergy Detection Dog).As the International Spokesdog for the Food Allergy Community, we are working hard to change the narrative on food allergies in kids 3-8 years old by educating all kids, empowering the food allergy kids, and encouraging empathy in the community around food allergy kids. The more people learn about and understand food allergies from a young age, the more accepting they will be as they grow up. So while the world will never be free of food allergens, education and understanding is the key to making the world a safer place for people with food allergies.Harley's Website: https://www.detectiveharleyfadd.comDownload Harley's App:https://www.detectiveharleyfadd.com/get-thJoin My Private Facebook Group to connect, support and share: https://www.facebook.com/groups/FoodAllergyPI/Read My Articles on WebMD: https://blogs.webmd.com/food-allergies/lisa-horneThe Everything Nut Allergy Cookbook: https://www.simonandschuster.com/authors/Lisa-Horne/190009636The Food Allergy Talk Podcast: https://foodallergypi.com/the-food-allergy-talk-podcast/Food Allergy P.I. On this episode of Food Allergy Talk, I welcome the two oldest of my 5 children – Stetson and Isabella. Stetson is 14 going on 15, and anaphylactic to 9 foods. Isabella is 12 and as far as we know she has no known food allergies. The reason we say as far as we know, this Spring we purchased a giant box of peaches and while enjoying one of her favorite fruits she had a slight reaction. We aren’t sure if it was oral allergy syndrome, a fluke thing and maybe a reaction to any pesticides sprayed… we are now in the process of working with an allergist to determine where she is food allergy-wise. Being just a couple years apart, these two have been best buddies since they were little and have shared a childhood together. I wanted to have Stetson on to tell us about Halloween from his perspective as a child growing up with food allergies, and Isabella as a sibling growing up with a brother with life-threatening food allergies.
