Politics by definition

Politics by definition

2023-11-1039:58

Recorded just before the last election, we have another conversation with Perri Gardner, who teaches political science at the College of Southern Idaho. This time, I wanted to get the textbook definition of "politics".  I see politics as the way we choose to care for each other within a community and I see politicians as the stewards of that collaboration -- but politics and politicians have a bad reputation. So I wanted to unwrap that a bit in this conversation with Perri. For those of you wanting more information, Perri sent along these recommendations: ttps://www.versobooks.com/products/926-legislature-by-lothttps://www.imprint.co.uk/product/keys/https://www.amazon.com/Tyranny-Minority-American-Democracy-Breaking/dp/0593443071/ref=asc_df_0593443071/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=647333938520&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3175062622521413248&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9029465&hvtargid=pla-1968810504901&psc=1&mcid=7929fd3cb0b53efeb1f4881aeaaa265e#immersive-view_1699721590459
In this episode we meet David Roth.  David is a community leader in Idaho Falls, Idaho and a candidate for one of Idaho's seats in the US House of Representatives.  We talk about how we both got involved in politics and he offers some great advice on how to decide which of the parties is a good fit for you. Within the podcast, David mentions the ALICE threshold. Today we meet Morna Haist and Katerina Daniel of an amazing organization called Revolutionary Woman Global.I wanted to learn more about this organization and what they mean when they say they work in a revolutionary circle. What I found is that RWG is reclaiming traditional ways to creating communities and doing so in a way that thousands of people can join via the internet to create a future we all can believe in. Here are the links to some of the things we mention in the podcast.https://www.revolutionarywoman.global/https://womendeliver.org/https://www.playcentre.org.nz/https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/early-women-were-hunters-not-just-gatherers-study-suggests-180982459/

Resilience and Rwanda

Resilience and Rwanda

2023-07-0101:15:01

After about an 8 month absence, Karma is back about to embark on an incredible trip to Rwanda.  In this episode, she chats with ZeZe Rwasama, who is currently the director of the College of Southern Idaho's Refugee Center. Zeze lived in Rwanda for 6 years as a refugee and has an interesting perspective on that country and resilience.
Today I speak with Jason PrettyBoy, a good friend and part of Indigenous Idaho Alliance. Jason and I met last summer and he's traveled several time to help support my campaign for the Idaho House. I became attached to the phrase "Dirt Road Democrat" earlier in the year and I want to discuss what that phrase with a few others who  I believe understand the term. Jason is the first person that came to mind so I wanted him to be the first person with whom I discussed the topic. Stay tuned for more!
After a long break, we are back!  Thanks for waiting for us. Today, campaign intern Braden Robinson chats with Karma about the status of the campaign and the move from every day campaign to a growing movement to put service back into public service.

Join members of my campaign team and me as we discuss the issues we've been learning about in the first 60 days of our campaign for the state legislature. I loved this discussion and look forward to more with these bright and compassionate people.
On this episode, we meet Perri Gardner, a political science professor at the College of Southern Idaho. We talk politics in Idaho and try to explain the primary election system in this state. This is a great and informative episode! I could have chatted with Perri for hours!  Thanks to listener Laura  Bahn-Wornell for suggesting this topic!
Powerful Women

Powerful Women

2022-03-1701:42:29

On this episode we meet 4 of the most confident, wise and compassionate women I know. We hear their stories about how they found their paths to and from small, rural towns and hear their advice for creating our own journeys.  This is a long episode but full of the best kind of conversations -- the ones you don't want to end. This episode was recorded at OoLaLa Boutique in Twin Falls, Idaho, so thank you to owner Liyah Babayon (who is a guest on this episode) and her staff who made that possible. As always, we are supported by The Tumbleweed Collective and SallisBackPorchFabrics.com -- both based in Shoshone, Idaho. All music is written and performed by CJ Fitzgerald and Lukas King.
Service Leadership II

Service Leadership II

2022-02-2538:16

In this episode, Karma and LaVonne discuss service leadership and how it has shaped their passions and projects in the community.
In our first official episode of The Purple Perspective, we look at a few of the issues making their way through the Idaho legislature as well as a quick discussion on access and the potential for rural, on-demand public transportation.  We want to be the voice for the people in the middle of the political perspective -- not red or blue -- but purple. Today's discussion features Lavonne Limpus and Chris Ward, two friends who also happen to own The Tumbleweed Collective, a great new store in downtown Shoshone, ID and one of the sponsors for today's episode.
We are constantly being told we’re a divided country. But I think, we have far more in common than we don’t. We all want good schools, happy and healthy children, clean air and water and economies that work for our families. And rather being all red or all blue – we are a brilliant and magnificent shade of purple. I want purple perspective to be the view from the saddle, the driver’s seat, the boardroom and the kitchen table where we talk about what it really means to be an American in 2022.

In the final episode of my series from the Women Deliver Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, I speak with my fellow delegates about their experience and we talk about what we've learned, how we've been impacted and give a little advice about "getting to the goo" -- you can't be a butterfly without being in the goo for a while.Warning: you'll hear some profanity in this episode! Here are the links for some of the things we bring up in this episode:The Kindness Method:Revolutionary Woman GlobalWomen DeliverStacey Abrams“The point of entry is to take action, then find others to take action. And then repeat. You don’t define the movement; the movement will define itself."White WomenSarah Amy Glensor Best
Today we have a quick discussion with Rep. Sally Toone (D-Idaho26B).  We'll hear about what she considers her greatest victories after 6 years in the statehouse and about the bills she's watching during the current legislative session. As always our podcast is sponsored by The TumbleWeed Collective in Shoshone, Idaho and Sallisbackporchfabrics.com.All music is original by CJ Fitzgerald.
Service Leadership

Service Leadership

2022-02-0639:46

This week we chat with my friend and business partner Rebecca Wood about her background and how she became a public servant.  One of the things we have in common is our belief in service leadership. We discuss that and her most recent project -- bringing broadband service to our rural county.  This week's episode is sponsored by Salli's Back Porch Fabrics and The Tumbleweed Collective  -- both in Shoshone, Idaho. All the music you hear is written and performed by CJ Fitzgerald and Lukas King.
The beginning of a great conversation with some friends from the world of agriculture. Unfortunately, our chat got cut short, but I wanted to share this with you anyway as I think it will be the start of more great conversations. If you'd like to be part of the next roundtable, just email me at karma@sheiskarma.com.
