The survivors were stranded in the mountains for 72 days, during which time they faced freezing temperatures, life-threatening injuries, an avalanche, and imminent starvation. In this episode, Hailee is bewitched by the Bly Balloon Bomb Tragedy of WWII. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States officially entered WWII. Immediately, Americans began interrogating and then incarcerating Japanese Americans, many of them citizens, along the west coast. After America responded to the Pearl Harbor attack by bombing Tokoyo, Japan was infuriated that America remained relatively untouched by warfare. So, they tasked scientists with creating a weapon that would reach American soil. They came up with a balloon capable of using the recently discovered Jet Stream to carry bombs across the Pacific. The balloons were manufactured by children and were responsible for the only civilian casualty on United States mainland during the war. Staff PicksRemarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van PeltPeace is a Chain Reaction by Tanya Lee StoneRecommendationsMoviesOn Paper WingsNon-FictionSeen and Unseen: What Dorothea Lange, Toyo Miyatake, and Ansel Adams's Photographs Reveal About the Japanese American Incarceration by Elizabeth Patridge Fu-go: The Curious History of Japan's Balloon Bomb Attack on America by Ross CoenThey Called Us Enemy by George TakeiFictionWe Are Not Freeby Traci CheeBeneath the Wide Silk Sky by Emily Inouye HueyWhen the Emperor Was Divine by Julie OtsukaLove in the Library by Maggie Tokuda-HallDisplacement by Kiku HugesIf you are interested in any of the books we talk about in this episode, please consider purchasing them through our affiliate link with Bookshop.org. SourcesBombs Fall on Oregon: Japanese Attacks on the StateMitchell MonumentBeware Of Japanese Balloon BombsOn Paper Wings - DocumentaryFrom Engagement to PeacePearl Harbor, History.orgJapanese-American Incarceration During World War IIJapan’s World War II Balloon Bomb Attacks on North AmericaAuthor Maggie Tokuda-Hall Takes a Stand Against Censorship and the “Deeply American Tradition of Racism”Topaz History: Topaz MuseumThe “Loyalty Questionnaire” of 1943 Opened a Wound that has Yet to Heal Support the show

In this episode, Katie shares what America knew about the Holocaust as it was unfolding. Recently, Katie volunteered as a docent for the ALA's traveling "Americans and the Holocaust" exhibition in partnership with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The exhibition explores how much Americans knew about the Nazi persecution and murder of Jews in Europe and examines the U.S. response in a global, historical context. The exhibition also invites visitors to consider what more could have been done by Americans, a question we should continuously be asking ourselves as acts of persecution and genocide continues around the world to this day. But when conditions in the cave begin to deteriorate rapidly, their options shrink, and expert cave divers John Volanthen and Rick Stanton are tasked with planning the impossible. With the help of Australian cave-diving anesthesiologist Dr. Richard Harris and a team of divers from around the world, John and Rick lead the incredible rescue of all 13 Wild Boars. This week, Katie is bewitched by the incredible rescue of the Wild Boars youth soccer team from Tham Luang cave. In June 2018, twelve boys and their soccer coach headed into a local cave system to celebrate a teammate's birthday. But what was a typical afternoon for kids in this rural northern Thailand town quickly became an unthinkable emergency when an unexpected rainstorm left their only exit underwater. Within days, the entire world watched with bated breath as expert cave divers fought against a raging subterranean river in an increasingly desperate bid to find the team. Then, nine days after their disappearance, divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen surfaced 2.5 miles from the cave entrance and found themselves face-to-face with thirteen survivors. In this first half of a two-part series, we explore the days leading up to the discovery of the Wild Boars team. Thirty-two acts performed for the nearly 500,000 attendees over the three days and Rolling Stone Magazine lists it as one of the top 50 moments that changed Rock and Roll history. Lobotomies

2022-11-1001:47:46

In this episode, Katie is bewitched by lobotomies. The U.S. has a long and tragic history of barbaric and inhumane treatment of people living with mental illnesses. From overcrowded institutions to painful experimental treatments, patients were subjected to the unthinkable. Admittance to a state hospital was tantamount to a death sentence served in inhumane conditions. Then, a promising young neurologist introduced a new procedure inspired by the work of a Portuguese physician. Walter Freeman and the prefrontal lobotomy offered the promise of returning a patient home in a year or less. To many, this psychosurgery was seen as a miracle. But as thousands of unconsenting patients had the connections in their prefrontal cortexes severed by leucotomes and orbitoclasts, the true costs of the procedure were slowly revealed. Staff picks: The Flatshare (and ALL the other books!) by Beth O'Leary Everything Everywhere All at Once, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert The Midnight Club by Christopher Pike + its Netflix adaptationRelated media recommendations: The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness  by Jack El-HaiMadness in Civilization: A Cultural History of Insanity, from the Bible to Freud, from the Madhouse to Modern Medicine by Andrew ScullRosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter by Kate Clifford LarsonMy Lobotomy: A Memoir by Howard Dully and Charles FlemingThe Lobotomist's Wife by Samantha Greene WoodruffThe Mad Woman's Ball by Victoria MasThe Mountain, directed by Rick AlversonThe Lobotomist, produced by American Experience PBSMy Lobotomy: Howard Dully's Journey by "All Things Considered" NPRIf you are interested in any of the books we talk about in this episode, please consider purchasing them through our affiliate link with Bookshop.org!Sources: The Strange and Curious History of the LobotomyMy Lobotomy: Howard Dully's Journey Psychosurgery, Ethics, and Media: A History of Walter Freeman and the LobotomyA Hole in the Head: A History of TrepanationAmerica's Long-Suffering Mental Health SystemThe Secret Lobotomy of Rosemary KennedyMental Illness in Black Community, 1700-2019: A Short HistoryThe Village at Grand Traverse Common: HistorySupport the show

In this episode, Katie is bewitched by the tragic story of the Radium Girls. Hundreds of young women were thrilled at the chance to paint clock faces and dials with a new kind of glow-in-the-dark paint in the 1920s. Factories that produced these new products paid three times as much as similar employers, with the added bonus of free access to the highly valuable radium that gave its paint its signature glow. At the time, radium was being added to everything from water to makeup and was touted as a miracle cure.  But within a few short years, the dial painters were suffering from everything from tumors to teeth loss. Julia Child Part 1

2022-04-0654:41

This week, Katie is bewitched by the one and only Julia Child. Beloved for her warm and inviting presence on screen that made her a star, Julia Child's life before she became America's favorite French cook is less well known.  Abandoning her career as a copywriter to serve her country during World War II, Julia traveled to Asia, working for the OSS, where she met her husband, Paul Cushing Child. Together, the pair moved to Paris and Julia fell in love with French cuisine. In this first of two episodes spanning the incredible life of Julia Child, we explore her childhood, government service, education, and married life before she published her first cookbook.
