Description

This is Dose of Depth podcast. I’m your host, Deborah Lukovich, and I invite you to be curious about your unique experience of being human. In this podcast, we’ll explore the deeper meaning of ordinary life experiences through conversation, stories, and education. You might have a serious ah-ha moment, or you might be amused by the movie your life seems to be imitating, or you might just be entertained by one of my awkward stories. I’m hoping you’ll become more aware of those moments when a deeper part of you is prompting you to see things differently and maybe even go a new direction. So, let’s get started. Deborah

What's your relationship with place? Can you feel the places you live or visit speaking to you about their experience?  Do you have an irrational preference to live near the water? Or a hatred for suburban living? In this episode, I’m excited to have a chat with my new depth psychology buddy and a fellow alum of Pacifica Graduate Institute. Dr. Craig Chalquist is the Academic Program Director of Consciousness, Psychology, and Transformation at National University. A former psychotherapist and long-time graduate instructor and administrator, Craig teaches and writes at the intersection of psyche, place, philosophy, myth, leadership, and dream. Two of his books are specifically about Terrapsychology, which you’ll learn about. One is more practical and titled, Change the Game: 20 Strategies for Inventive Real-Life Problem-Solving, and another is a work of fiction titled, Soulmap: A Novel. I promise if you can let go of the mind and allow and receive our conversation, you will have a new kind of experience. Deborah Lukovich, PhDSupport Dose of Depth with a monthly donation of $5. This episode is for people suffering from anxiety or other negative emotions, like overwhelm, guilt, panic, feeling trapped, fear, sadness, etc. I will guide you through some breath work and connecting with the parts of the body where those emotions are gathered. Then we will invite your unconscious to attach an image to that area of the body. The image could be visual, a sensation, color, temperature, a memory, a person, or even a scene. Next, I'll guide you in communicating with the images and asking them to move out of your body so you can get a better look, ask the image some questions, and maybe even get an answer or a clue. The exercise will help you detach from the burden of thoughts and emotions. You will learn how to be the observer instead of feeling overwhelmed. If you like this, and want a guided experience that focuses on thoughts, along with a more open experience of active imagination, listen to Come Breathe & Imagine. Enjoy! In this episode I read a blog post I wrote in 2020 about the film Aquaman, and then I updated it in 2023. Film images are one way my unconscious speaks to me directly. Certain films  have had a strong pull on me, especially during my midlife unraveling and reconstruction. Now, I do not question my urge to view some films or even Netflix series as many as eight or nine times. Exploring those images early in my midlife unraveling led to personal insights that I would not have gained in any other way. As my midlife reconstruction phase began, certain film images overwhelmed me and new insights transcended my personal life, revealing clues about the chaos happening in the larger collective. Also, if you have been feeling the urge to explore your relationship with religion, especially Christianity, you might be intrigued by my experience of this particular film. My original blog post - The Hidden Meaning of the Film Aquaman - has links to many resources to assist in your exploration. Enjoy being entertained or maybe you'll find inspiration to dig deeper into your unconscious, the bottomless pit of insights about the deeper meaning of your life. In this episode, I bring back one of my favorite writers and guests. JD Edwin is a science fiction and urban fantasy author who believes the first goal of fiction is FUN! She is the author of the Headspace series, an easy-to-read, action-packed science fiction trilogy published by Story Cartel Press. Headspace (book 1)Master of the Arena (book 2) Orb Hunters (book 3)JD's WebsiteOur first chat was two years ago, just after JD had published the first in her Headspace series, and then I had her back a year later after she published the second.  She’s not only completed that series, but she’s onto to another series. I haven’t gotten to the third in the series, but the first two were amazing. My first interview w/JD on Dose of DepthOur second chat on Dose of Depth One thing that I really was intrigued about was JD’s use of non-binary story telling. She doesn’t describe characters by gender. Today, we’re going to talk about the intersection of vulnerability and creativity. I’ll start with this truth: The unconscious – personal and collective – seeks to create. Your unconscious seeks to create. Create what? You might ask.It was JD’s idea to talk about this topic. It seems our first chat inspired her journey to get to know herself a little deeper.  So, let’s get started . . . In this episode, I read a blog post I wrote in February, 2024. As usual, a recent walk on a sunny day prompted some new ideas about how to share some of what my clients and I have learned together on our journeys. The topics are exploring the spiritual meaning of physical/body challenges and changing up a story about trauma to release shame. Enjoy some recent realizations and consider scheduling a FREE 30 minute exploratory chat to launch your Indiana Jones adventure of self discovery. In this episode I want to inspire you to activate your inner philosopher because the world needs your reflections about the meaning of your life within the context of all the chaos going on. CG Jung warned something like, the fate of humanity depends upon the self-reflecting individual so as not to get swallowed up by mass-minded ideas (aka conspiracy theories that are spreading like wildfire). My guest today is someone I’ve been following on Instagram. It felt like a seduction of sorts by the time I came across the black and white photo of Johnny Price looking stoic. Reading his profile only intrigued me more. Johnny calls himself a poet, philosopher, sage, shaman, Buddhist warrior monk in search of truth. And his collection of 2,000 books puts me to shame. Oh, and he’s working on his first novel. This episode is about self-intimacy and includes a guided meditation for those seeking a deeper and more intimate relationship with themselves and others. Sexuality, arousal, passionate physical touch are all ways creative intelligence works through us to increase consciousness. The expansion of consciousness always involves an unleashing of creativity. New ideas of what it means to be human, inventions, perspectives, artistic expression, all these things express the demand by archetypal energies to evolve, and the expansion of consciousness always manifests as an expansion of love and compassion. There’s a Jungian analyst that suggests that the Self (capital S), not our ego self, is the bridge to the Divine, God, nature, the quantum realm, whatever you want to call it. If you think you know God, that is certainly blasphemous, for God is unknowable. God is consciousness and comes to know itself through the unfolding of consciousness itself. This means that the more we come into relationship with our Self (capital S), the closer we are to that transcendent force. The relationship with Source is not about silly words, rather it is about truly knowing, the root of which is to relate, which requires the body.Withstanding the vulnerability of coming into deeper relationship with your Self prepares you for connecting more deeply with another human being, including a romantic partner. Rather than being needy of a partner’s affection, your depth of relationship with yourself invites your partner to match your vulnerability. The two of you become a vessel for creative intelligence to mix with each of you to unleash something new into the world.  There’s so much more to intimacy that you realize and the key to experiencing new heights of ecstasy and depths of meaning is to begin with self-intimacy.Enjoy! In this episode, I’m sharing my passion for Jungian film theory. I’ve been wanting to incorporate my thoughts about the deeper meaning of movies into my podcast. I guess my second viewing of the movie Poor Things pushed me over the procrastination edge. The fact that I could not immediately articulate how this film – Poor Things – impacted my psyche was a clue that it was communicating something new. I couldn’t think of a better person to have this conversation with than my friend and former colleague, PJ Dever. He’s one of those friends that you can chat with for hours and wonder where the time has gone. PJ is a nonprofit leader working out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in New Jersey where he also went to college. He grew up in a household with an amazing father and three sisters. He and his partner spend time hiking, camping, and traveling.  He has an intense love of stories and ensures that his life is filled with interesting books, people, and movies. For years, our conversations naturally gravitated towards films and Netflix series whether they were blockbusters that appealed to the masses or more niche films. In today's episode, I share a little bit about Jungian film theory, specifically three concepts: (1) CG Jung’s discernment between psychological and visual art;  (2) Luke Hockley's concept of the third imag; and (3) Jung’s idea about the difference between symbol and sign.  And then PJ and I get into it. Enjoy! In this episode, I read a blog post I wrote in spring of 2019. Three things I was reflecting about came together, the dramatic uptick in hate speech and acts of violence, my reading of Martin Luther King Jr.'s book, Strength to Love, and how nonviolent resistance works from a depth psychology perspective. Before I go on, if you like this episode or are already a fan of Dose of Depth podcast, could you like, rate, comment and share please? Also, consider becoming a financial supporter of Depth for just $5/month. Click here to learn more.Four years have passed since I wrote that blog post, and so many people have been swept up by a negative version of the archetypal energy that is rooted in the biggest collective wound of all - patriarchy. But there is a growing counter energy that is pushing the process of forcing something new out of the collective unconscious. People swept up in this version of the same archetypal wound are hungry for understanding more at a deeper level, not only about themselves but about those who seek to harm and trigger them. As they heal, what once triggered them evolves into the strength to hold space for those who cannot self-reflect and are not aware that their projections of intolerance and anger onto others is mirroring back to them their own internalized self-hatred and feelings of unworthiness. If you've been coming into deeper relationship with your Self, we need you to take the next step to help disrupt the action and reaction pattern that reinforces the projection of those who are not self aware. I’m excited to chat with Sher Griffin, who describes herself as a thrice-exceptional individual with a recently discovered neurotype intersection of autism, giftedness, and ADHD.  Sher Immerses herself in the realm of transformative social change, delving into the intricacies of liberation psychology through her graduate studies at Saybrook University. Sher is also the visionary founder and co-creator of The Compassion Collective: A Phoenix Society, where she curates a diverse community of social misfits for the purpose of navigating the intersections of social exclusion, neurodivergence, and substance use disorders. I have a feeling it’s the misfits who can save us, not conventional ideas. The faster we stop resisting Generation Z and those whom we now describe as neurodiverse, and instead empower them with our trust, the faster we can work towards changing up all those systems that don’t work for enough humans right now. We’re going to talk about two of my favorite topics combined: the feminine and film. Jen Degnan Smith has a Ph.D. in Jungian and Archetypal Psychology, an MA in Applied Psychology, and a BA in Economics. Her career spans the US and Europe, focusing on where psychology and business intersect and teaching Organizational Behavior to MBA and undergraduate students. She is currently co-teaching a Ph.D. course on the psychological and cultural impacts of technology at Pacifica Graduate Institute.Jen is dedicated to healing and empowering the feminine principle within individuals and cultures. She writes, consults, speaks, and teaches about how to find a new feminine through myth, images, dreams, synchronicities, and place. In this episode, I’m excited to have a chat with someone from my hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She’s as passionate as I am about making the world a better place. I met Mary Triggiano decades ago when she was the managing attorney for Legal Action of Wisconsin, the state’s largest nonprofit law firm committed to ensuring access to the justice system especially for those least able to afford it. Since I last connected with Mary, she’s lived a full professional life, including working as a judge in children’s court, domestic violence court, and the civil division, as well as serving as chief judge for the Wisconsin judicial district that includes Milwaukee County. In her quest to help reshape the justice system to be more humanistic through especially a restorative practices approach, Mary has accomplished so much in the court system, from launching and expanding initiatives, including addressing root issues within families to get them back on track so children that had been removed can be returned to their families and have a better chance to heal and succeed, and programs to better serve the most vulnerable victims, babies impacted by substance use. Mary seemed like the perfect candidate to be hired recently as the first permanent director of Marquette University Law School’s Andrew Center for Restorative Justice. I feel lucky to get some time with her as she’s still settling into her new role. You know me, I’m going to bring my depth psychology lens to this critical topic of justice. In this episode, I read a blog post I wrote on May 1, 2020, after being interviewed for the Moms Meet Sanity online campaign. The title of the post is: The Evolving Relationship Between a Mother and Her Children. It was also five days before I left my hometown, not knowing COVID was just getting started, and leaving my young adult children behind. They smiled as I drove away to start my new life in a beach town, but I was in shock I think, because I had no idea what was next except that I would be defending my dissertation two weeks after moving into my new place. I was overwhelmed, lots of people were overwhelmed, and as I drove away from my smiling children, I stopped and asked them to take another photo looking sad. Our starting point with our children is our own experience as a child. Whether you remember your childhood as joyful, mediocre, or traumatic, our deepest and most ingrained patterns of how we relate to others were established during this time. These patterns helped us survive childhood AND they often run their course at some point during our lives. They stop working . . . Enjoy! In this episode, I have a conversation with Walter Williams, host of Deep Discussion podcast, certified life coach, and a poet; and he’s a dad and a husband too.I came across Walter on Twitter. His response to one of my reflection questions got my attention so I checked out his profile. All I had to know was that he was a poet and I swooned. I love poets, I’m a groupie for many, I had been trying to find one who was brave enough to chat with me. I’ve found poets are amazing and shy. Poets are special people, because they seem to be at least semi-aware of their role as vessels for creative intelligence, which wants to mix with their unique experience of being human to create something that can only be created in partnership with creative intelligence. Those people who say things like, “I just don’t get poetry,” usually say it with a defensive attitude and I wonder if that comes from a semi-awareness of the fear of what’s in their unconscious. Anyway, poets have an openness that’s rare, a willingness to surrender to something bigger than themselves, and the capacity to be vulnerable, which is the number one requirement for connecting at a deep level with other human beings. In this episode, I read a blog post I published this week, August 2023: A Framework for Self-Reflection in a Time of Conspiracy Theories.About a year ago, I had a chat with Jungian Analyst Vlado Solc about his book, Dark Religion: Fundamentalism from the Perspective of Jungian Psychology, which he wrote in partnership with George Didier.  This post is a follow-up article about the book and the topic. The book is a big read, but dense academic language is brought to life through examples of relatable lived experiences. Importantly, rather than being left with a feeling of diminishment or dismissal of religion, this book reinforces the need to respect the religious/spiritual instinct that seems to be part of what it means to be human.  Enjoy!Deborah Lukovich, PhDYouTube Video: Jesus was a liberal wimpPodcast episode: Self-Reflection in a Time of Conspiracy TheoriesPodcast episode: Three Ways of Why: A Chat with Vlado SolcRoot of "to know"Book: Nice Racism, by Robin Diangelo 2022YouTube video:  A Chat with My Gen Z sonBlog Post: What is Generation Z Mirroring Back to Us?Support Dose of Depth with a monthly donation of $5. In this episode, I have a fun and feisty chat with Natasha Carter, about her first novel, Unfinished Business. Natasha and I share a passion for writing about romance and sex, but we have difference experiences and perspectives. So much has changed since I was her age, and yet so much hasn’t changed. We’re both feisty and rebellious. In a way, Natasha is more rebellious than I am. She’s more obnoxious in a good way, and at the same time, her posts reveal her vulnerability. But she learned earlier than me not to hide her vulnerability, in fact it’s likely what attracts people to her, like a siren’s song. She’s a fighter in public, where I’m not really unless it’s on behalf of others.  Anyway, I know you’re going to love this conversation, and for sure, you’ll want to buy her novel whether you’re into erotic romance or not.  Visit Natasha's website Check out her book, Unfinished BusinessFollow Natasha on Twitter or Instagram Blog post: What if You're Not Supposed to Find the One?Blog Post: When is Sexual Attraction Not About Sex?Podcast episode: Creative Monogramy, Consensual Non Monogamy, Sexual ShadowEnjoy! In this episode I read a blog post from January 2021. This one needs no introduction. Let’s jump in. The title is: I Didn’t Become a Romantic Until I Got Divorced: Midlife Reflections.Did you come of age in the 1980s? What kinds of messages did you internalize having to do with gender roles? Have you thought about how those messages may have shown up as limiting beliefs that stand in the way of fully expressing yourself in midlife.Only now can I appreciate the complexity of my own coming of age experience. It was a time of great progress in many ways. But the price of admission to the cold professional world was detaching from any sense of feminine or focus on relationship. The excitement of new possibilities was matched by an almost equal amount of intense anger that found righteous validation in political movements couched in religious belief. The impact on women of being constantly demonized as family wreckers and sexual deviants cannot be overstated, especially when the chorus included other women.Any of this sound familiar? In this post, I share a little bit about how I came to find and begin healing my wounds related to the feminine, masculine, sexuality, and spirituality. Then I offer an exercise you can try to strengthen the relationship with your feminine through your body. Enjoy! In this episode, I have a conversation with Rev. Cynthia Brix and Dr. William Keepin, founders of Gender Equity and Reconciliation International, and lead authors of a new book, titled Gender Equity & Reconciliation: Thirty Years of Healing the Most Ancient Wound in the Human Family. This is one of my favorite topics, the dreaded and stubborn patriarchal wound that wreaks havoc within the psyches of men and women. Even those who have successfully detached from the conventional and limiting labels of gender and sexual orientation, meaning they are more conscious about these perceived opposing energies of masculine and feminine, they too suffer. William is a mathematical physicist with training in contemplative spirituality and transpersonal psychology, his research on global warming and sustainable energy influenced international environmental policy.Cynthia and William are joined by sixteen other authors in this new book, which offers such a wide range of thoughts on various aspects of this complex gender wound. What a fantastic anthology of writers considering this topic from so many angles.
