Description

“Fitness Flipped,” a Peloton Studios Original, is where we flip the script on all the things we think we know about fitness. Each week Peloton Instructor, athlete, author & host Tunde Oyeneyin will sit down with some of the most interesting experts and personalities from the world of fitness and beyond (Olympians! Musicians! Sociologists! Comedians! Actors!) to challenge and transform some of our own ideas about health, strength and mental wellness, and maybe even ourselves. What does it really mean to be strong? Does competition actually have anything to do with winning? Is the most important thing about pushing hard actually rest? Together, we’ll find out.

Every Tuesday we will dive deep on a topic and on Friday you will hear a story from a Peloton Member about their lived experience.

You are only as strong as your last recovery. We all need to rest, and not just because resting makes us more productive. It’s because rest and recovery are essential to being human and being strong. Research tells us that a key part of enduring and persevering is envisioning the future. And a big part of that envisioning is hope. Hope for the future you want. Peloton Member Jess Morales Rocketto is an organizer for social change. She thinks of her job as motivating people into their purpose: What do you care about? Why do you care about it and what are you going to do about it? She’s often pretty sure that something is going to push her past her limits and that it will be difficult but she does it anyway - and that is endurance. Today’s episode features Jess Morales Rocketto @JessLivMo  Transcript from today’s episode is here. You can listen to the podcast and experience the fun classes Peloton has to offer for yourself on the Peloton App. Download the App onepeloton.com/app (free for 30 days - New App Members Only. Endurance is both physical and emotional. We build physical endurance so that we can keep going in the face of everything that life throws at us. We practice perseverance so that we can keep pushing towards the life that we dream of. So today we're going to talk about how to train for our discomfort and then how to create a clear vision for getting there. Peloton Instructor Robin Arzón joins us and talks about what it takes to run 27 marathons - how much of it is in your mentality. Dr. Carla Meijen - sports psychologist - takes us on a deep dive of our relationship to pain.Today’s episode features Robin Arzón - @robinnyc and Carla Meijen - @CarlaMeijen.Transcript from today’s episode is here. You can listen to the podcast and experience the fun classes Peloton has to offer for yourself on the Peloton App. Download the App onepeloton.com/app (free for 30 days - New App Members Only. This episode talks about weight & body image. We understand this can be a sensitive and challenging topic. If this is a topic that you find triggering, we suggest listening to another episode of Fitness Flipped. Tunde and her guests are always here to support you! Comedy writer Caitie Delaney has had a topsy turvy relationship with her body image. With brutal honesty, Caitie talks about the ways she sees herself, what she thought would change if her body changed and what really didn’t change at all. She’s just like us - trying to figure out the best way to love herself, get fit and also be honest about the baggage she’s coming to it all with. It’s a process y’all!Today’s episode features Caitie Delaney - @caitiedelaneyTranscript from today’s episode is here. This is the most challenging theme of the season! Body image. It’s locked into body ideals (which change), pop culture (which changes), and broader society (which always wants us to change). But it never takes into account that bodies also change!  We’re asking a lot of questions about where the concept of body ideals come from and what it means to how we perceive ourselves. Professor Nancy Chen, joins us to go deep on the history and how trends of body ideals change over time. Mustard also joins us for a conversation about starting his journey to finding his physical strength.  How we perceive our bodies sometimes becomes our greatest obstacle to growth. We’re here to help it become our strength. Today’s episode features Professor Nancy Chen. You can watch her TED Talk Here. Today we’re talking about COMPETITION. Healthy competition is our invitation to level up in our lives. We’re thinking a lot about the different ways people get motivated to do their best. Study after study have shown that introducing elements of competitive play into exercise increases how much — and how enthusiastically — we do it. In this episode, we explore how community and trust can help us incorporate elements of healthy competition into our lives. Our guest is the most decorated American track and field athlete in Olympic history Allyson Felix who knows a thing or two about competition. We’re also joined by OG Peloton instructor Jenn Sherman to talk about ways to use the leaderboard for motivation. Today’s episode features Allyson Felix (@allysonfelix) and Jenn Sherman (@pelotonjenn). Transcript from today’s episode is here. You can listen to the podcast and experience the fun classes Peloton has to offer for yourself on the Peloton App. Download the App onepeloton.com/app (free for 30 days - New App Members Only. #PelotonGrandma for the win! Shirley Beard of Seattle has spent a lifetime figuring out what it means to be exactly who she is meant to be. With the wisdom of age, this knitter and grandma realized that instead of comparing herself and her fitness and her success to people around her, she needed to focus on the strides she herself was making every day and cheering on the people on the leaderboard near her too.  Today’s episode features Shirley Beard @Tsbeard70Transcript from today’s episode is here. You can listen to the podcast and experience the fun classes Peloton has to offer for yourself on the Peloton App. Download the App onepeloton.com/app (free for 30 days - New App Members Only. You can’t compare your insides to somebody else’s outsides! In our age of anxiety and social media, we all engage in sometimes subtle, and sometimes overt, comparison all day long — to our peers, to our coworkers, to our old high school crushes, to the biggest celebrities on the planet. Let’s flip that around! Peloton Instructor Emma Lovewell joins us to talk about how to find inspiration from her peers instead of comparing herself. Princeton University Psychologist Susan Fiske, author of “Envy Up, Scorn Down”, joins us to talk about how we change our target of comparison to be ourselves vs ourselves instead of ourselves vs everyone else.  Today’s episode features Emma Lovewell (@emmalovewell) and Susan Fiske (fiskelab.org). Transcript from today’s episode is here. You can listen to the podcast and experience the fun classes Peloton has to offer for yourself on the Peloton App. Download the App onepeloton.com/app (free for 30 days - New App Members Only. We all say we want to be real and authentic. So let’s get real: How do we get over our fear of rejection of our “real” selves, imperfections and all? This week we're flipping the idea of what it actually means to be strong. Sometimes our fitness of the body, mind, of *EVERYTHING* can be challenged. Our very foundation of our strength is challenged. So how do you gain your strength back after you've had your entire world turned upside down? Our member Robin J Price who rides with us down in Virginia had to redefine strength for herself when she was diagnosed with aggressive cancer just before the pandemic. Robin found strength in herself, and not only that, she found strength in her Peloton community. You can listen to the podcast and experience the fun classes Peloton has to offer for yourself on the Peloton App. Download the App onepeloton.com/app (free for 30 days - New App Members Only. Sometimes when you feel your weakest, you may actually be your strongest. This week, we're talking about how we redefine what it means to be strong, and more importantly, how we develop and practice strength. Over the past decade, evolving conversations around health, wellness, and fitness have ushered in new definitions of not only what it means to be “healthy,” but what it means to be “strong.” Our incredibly strong guest is world-record holding Paralympic track and field athlete Scout Bassett. Scout talks with us to talk about the strength that comes from struggle, not in spite of it. Neuroscientist Daya Grant also joins us to discuss what mental strength can do for us physically. By training our minds in resilience, goal setting, focus and more we are able to perform at the very highest levels.Today’s episode features Scout Bassett- @scoutbassett and Dr. Daya Grant @dr.dayagrant.Transcript of today's episode is here. You can listen to the podcast and experience the fun classes Peloton has to offer for yourself on the Peloton App. Download the App onepeloton.com/app (free for 30 days - New App Members Only. A key to combating stress? Finding your people. Frontline workers have been holding us up these past two years - so what do they do to take care of themselves and prevent stress and burnout during this incredibly challenging time? During covid, female physicians have used Peloton en masse to manage their stress and chase serotonin. Dr. Jagu Anadkat, a neonatal intensive care doctor in St. Louis, organized a group of her coworkers across many departments to ride together once a week. They have held each other up, made each other laugh, and found that some sweat and community goes a long way.You can listen to the podcast and experience the fun classes Peloton has to offer for yourself on the Peloton App. Download the App onepeloton.com/app (free for 30 days - New App Members Only.
