"White people act as if racism doesn't hurt them, but it does." In this episode of Called to be Bad I talk with Darryl Heller and Ben Bouwman about reparations. Darryl is professor of women and gender studies at Indiana University South Bend and is the director of the South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center. Ben pastors at Walnut Hill Mennonite Church in Goshen, Indiana. Darryl and Ben provide definitions for reparations and Darryl talks about how reparations is a process, not a one-time-event. We discuss biblical models of reparations and how learning history is key to prevent future harm. "So my sexuality was like, 'here's how you're supposed to be: you're supposed to be heterosexual, you're supposed to be submissive, you're supposed to be excited any time he is excited. You're not really allowed to say no, or if you say no...say yes next time.'" In this episode of Called to be Bad I talk with Jo Lloyd Johnson, a woman who grew up in a fundamentalist Christian commune in California. She shares her story of how her understanding of sex changed from one of shame to one of healing in her memoir, "Silenced in Eden". We talk about how to define sex/virginity, how much sex is wrapped up in shame within Christianity, and how having premarital sex with her now husband helped Jo heal her relationship with her body.  Resources: Books: Come As You Are: The Surprising New  Science that will Transform Your Sex Life https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Come-As-You-Are-Revised-and-Updated/Emily-Nagoski/9781982165314Virgin: The Untouched History by Hanne Blank https://goodreads.com/en/book/show/225909The Great Sex Rescue: The Lies You've Been Taught and How to Recover What God Intended https://baremarriage.com/great-sex-rescue/Love Wins by Rob Bell https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40721873-love-winsThe organization Jo mentioned that funds EMDR for SA Survivors:  Louder Than Silence https://www.louderthansilence.org/Support the showFollow us for more ✨bad✨ content: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calledtobebad_podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calledtobebad Website: https://calledtobebad.buzzsprout.com/ Want to become part of the ✨baddie✨ community? "And the fact that 80 or 85% of the mineral needed to power the green economy, needed to build our electric cars, our solar panels, etc., are located on or near Indigenous lands..." In this episode of CTBB I talk with Sarah Augustine and Sheri Hostetler about what it would look like to participate in "holistic decolonization" work. Can we re-imagine how we relate to one another and creation outside the frameworks of capitalism, white supremacy, and "extractive practices". How would it change our planet if we adopted an Indigenous cosmology and relationship to one another? I say this every time...but this is a good one folks. Guest bios: Sheri Hostetler cofounded the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition in 2014 and continues to serve on the steering committee. She is the cohost of the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery podcast with Sarah Augustine. She was also one of the founders of what is now called Inclusive Mennonite Pastors, a coalition of pastoral leaders seeking LGBTQ+ justice in the church. She has been the lead pastor of First Mennonite Church of San Francisco since 2000. Her writing has appeared in Anabaptist World, Mennonite Quarterly Review, Leader magazine, and more, and her poems appear in A Cappella: Mennonite Voices in Poetry. She is a graduate of Bluffton College and the Episcopal Divinity School. She is trained as a spiritual director and a permaculturist, and lives with her husband Jerome Baggett and their son Patrick on an island in the San Francisco Bay. She comes from a long line of Amish and Mennonite settler farmers.Sarah Augustine, who is a Pueblo (Tewa) descendant, is cofounder and executive director of the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition. She is also the cofounder of Suriname Indigenous Health Fund (SIHF), where she has worked in relationship with vulnerable Indigenous Peoples since 2005. She has represented the interests of Indigenous community partners to their own governments, the Inter-American development bank, the United Nations, the Organization of American States Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and the World Health Organization, among others. “I could spend hours and days looking for a particular book, and not infrequently I discover I have more than one copy, I’ve discovered not only doubles, but triples, and in the worst case four copies of the same book on my shelf.”In this episode of CTBB I talk with professor, polyglot, and book/word-lover, Paul Keim. We hear Paul’s opinions on the name of the podcast, stories of how he fell in love with language and books, why he loves memes, why reading/collecting books is elitist, and how it is the “knowledge-keeper’s” responsibility to share what they learn. It is a full, meandering, nerdy, and fun episode. Guest Bio: Paul Keim is professor of Bible, religion and classical languages at Goshen College. He received his Master of Divinity in theological studies from the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart. After completing several years of service and study with the Mennonite Central Committee in Poland and England, he went on to Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he received a doctoral degree in near Eastern languages and civilizations. He taught for over 20 years at Goshen College and as a sessional adjunct at AMBS. Prof. Keim recently retired from Goshen College. Having taught on an adjunct basis at the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary for many years, he was Visiting Professor of Biblical Studies and Chair of the Bible Department during the 2021-22 year. He is now Coordinator of student services at AMBS. He is currently writing a commentary on the Book of Job for the Believers Church Bible Commentary series.References: Krister Stendahl, “Why I Love the Bible”: https://bulletin.hds.harvard.edu/why-i-love-the-bible/Support the showFollow us for more ✨bad✨ content: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calledtobebad_podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calledtobebad Website: https://calledtobebad.buzzsprout.com/ Want to become part of the ✨baddie✨ community? "I feel like black women have been, and always will be, the closest approximation of Jesus Christ's salvific work, in our lives." Shantell Hinton Hill is an engineer, pastor, and poet that centers her justice work around Black Feminism(s) and Womanism. She tells stories of finding her voice and the way black women in her life have uplifted, empowered, and resurrected her. Now it is her goal to live out this empowering work and way of life. Shantell connects this work with the women of the Bible who were unnamed, voiceless, yet acted in faith and power. She describes how Black feminism(s) and Womanism point out the way intersectional oppressions may be operating throughout scripture. We hear one of her breathtaking poems from her book, “Black girl magic and other elixirs,” which problematizes how Christians think of suffering, death, and crucifixion. We finish by hearing about the voices who have shaped Shantell’s Black feminism(s), her faith, and her writing, as well as encouragement for those who don’t know what to do with their faith in the face of all the suffering in our world. Guest’s Full Bio: Shantell Hinton Hill is the ultimate Renaissance woman. An engineer turned pastor, Shantell situates her work at the intersections of social justice, public theology, and Black feminism/womanism. A native of Conway, Arkansas, Shantell is married to Rev. Jeremy Hill. They recently welcomed their first child, Sophie June, to their growing family. Shantell obtained a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School. She also earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Colorado State University. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the National Society of Black Engineers. She is also an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Her vocational experiences include work as a Process Control Engineer, a Bible teacher, and as Assistant University Chaplain at Vanderbilt University. Shantell’s Book: “Black girl magic and other elixirs”: https://www.shantellhhill.com/shopShantell’s Website: https://www.shantellhhill.com/Shantell’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shantellhhill/ and Love, Auntie: https://www.Support the showFollow us for more ✨bad✨ content: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calledtobebad_podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calledtobebad Website: https://calledtobebad.buzzsprout.com/ Want to become part of the ✨baddie✨ community? “In a sense, partisan politics, uncompromising politics are seen as, ‘Well that’s the real problem,’ and I think that moderate politics often does take a side, I just don’t think it has the courage to say it.”In this episode of Called to be Bad–Jonny Rashid, pastor, and author of the book, “Jesus Takes A Side: Embracing the Political Demands of the Gospel,” shares his experience of living as an Arab-American during political upheaval in the United States, and his realization that politics are always personal. We discuss the dangers of moderate politics and how polarization may not be as “bad” as people often think they are. Jonny also breaks down aspects of the devastation ripping apart Gaza right now–and how you can hold two true things together at the same time. Connect with Jonny’s work: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonnyrashid/?hl=enSubstack: https://jonnyrashid.substack.com/His book, “Jesus Takes a Side: Embracing the Political Demands of the Gospel”: https://www.mennomedia.org/9781513810430/jesus-takes-a-sideThe article Jonny references: https://jonnyrashid.substack.com/p/when-it-comes-to-israel-palestineSupport the showFollow us for more ✨bad✨ content: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calledtobebad_podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calledtobebad Website: https://calledtobebad.buzzsprout.com/ Want to become part of the ✨baddie✨ community? “Transitioning gave me back my body, which is what I expected, right, I expected to have this new relationship with my body and that will be great. What I didn’t also expect, was that transitioning gave me back my faith.”  In this episode of CTBB I talk with ordained priest, playwright/screenwriter, and theologian Shannon TL Kearns about body theology through a trans lens. Shannon is a transgender man who believes in the transformative power of stories. We begin by hearing Shannon’s story of how he discovered his queerness and transness, and how that impacted his relationship with his body and faith. We touch on body dysmorphia and the complicated relationship everyone has with their bodies then Shannon provides examples of biblical characters who are defying gender norms. We end with Shannon’s advice for trans folx and their friends/families. Guest Bio: Shannon TL Kearns is a transgender man who believes in the transformative power of stories. We use her books, Safer than the Known Way: A Post Christian Journey  and Reconfigure: A Collection of Post-Christian Thoughts and Theologies, to talk about post-Christianity, about "metabolizing" your past beliefs, and what it means to move into the freedom of the unknown. Resources: Maria's Work: https://www.mariafrancescafrench.com/booksInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/francescafemme/Support the showFollow us for more ✨bad✨ content: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calledtobebad_podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calledtobebad Website: https://calledtobebad.buzzsprout.com/ Want to become part of the ✨baddie✨ community? "In some ways it is just a reminder that Western Christians don't have a copywrite on Christianity, a copywrite on Jesus, a copywrite on the Bible..." In this episode I talk with theologian, author, professor, and podcaster, Drew G. I. Hart, PhD about the ways white supremacy has shaped, formed, and corrupted Christianity. We touch on the particular ways Anabaptist Mennonites interact with white supremacy and discuss how Hart's, "Jesus shaped imagination", can help counter the negative effects of white supremacy and racism in the church.  Resources: Drew's Books: Trouble I've Seenhttps://www.thriftbooks.com/w/trouble-ive-seen-changing-the-way-the-church-views-racism_drew-gi-hart/13502210/?resultid=7f227daf-8edc-4d1f-a33e-f5b15e8a1c6d#edition=13170081&idiq=18660452Who Will be a Witnesshttps://www.thriftbooks.com/w/who-will-be-a-witness-igniting-activism-for-gods-justice-love-and-deliverance_drew-g-i-hart/26235109/?resultid=b190490d-00ef-42b3-aae5-7bfa6d73678e#edition=29788841&idiq=47303513Drew's Website: https://drewgihart.com/The Inverse Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/inverse-podcast/id1358332600Patreon for the Inverse Podcast: https://www.patreon.com/InVerse?fbclid=IwAR2dDsVpzul6x-85BWjZqI4GjBhYmoO9V705uczcBiSlI3QUyxgDTjrHf84Support the showFollow us for more ✨bad✨ content: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calledtobebad_podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calledtobebad Website: https://calledtobebad.buzzsprout.com/ Want to become part of the ✨baddie✨ community?
