How does financial stewardship relate to our struggle with pornography? 

The great commission - Go… Make Disciples… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded (Matt 28:19-20)The church is tasked with making disciples… not converts. Conversion without discipleship leads to weak Christians who are not rooted in Christ. Discipleship presumes evangelism. Evangelism is not the goal Disciple-making is. How is Evangelism (making disciples) a means of grace that will help me overcome porn? The teacher always learns more than the studentFuels our reading of scripture as we consider how to explain an idea or concept to someone else. Causes us to look at the text in a different way/new perspective. Causes us to anticipate questions and seek answers.Requires us to have a deep understanding of the Gospel. What does the resurrection of Christ mean for my life? How do I deal with sin and shame? Who am I, especially when I sin… again?How do I deal with tragedy/suffering? Knowing that a difficult circumstance is coming, we can prepare our hearts to keep looking to Christ in the midst of a trial. Reactive Preaching - Look back on the events of your life through the lens of the Gospel. 1 Peter 3:15  “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”Ephesians 6:15 “As shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.” Psalm 42:11 “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”

The means of grace are God’s appointed instruments by which the Holy Spirit enables believers to receive Christ and the benefits of redemption… God assigned the Word, sacraments, and prayer to be the foremost means by which He communicates Christ and His benefits to believers.”“We find a helpful historical definition of the means of grace in the Westminster Shorter Catechism, where we read: “The outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption, are his ordinances, especially the word, sacraments, and prayer; all which are made effectual to the elect for salvation” (WSC 88).”David Mathis wrote a book called Habits of GraceHere he focuses on the behaviors or habits that if instilled within us and infused with faith that Christ will meet us in the doing of the habits, the grace of God grows in our life.  We need this grace. If we are going to make progress in the battle against lust and sexual brokenness, we need to grow in grace. We need to grow in our obedience to God and his word.  We are going to use Mathis’s book, Habits of Grace as a guide for this series. We will not be following it point by point but more using it as an outline for what topics to cover and discuss.  There may be certain episodes that lean more heavily on the book than others.  We encourage you to purchase a copy of the book for your own use and study as we go through this series.  Link can be found in the show notes.  Objection - The Bible says that we’re saved by grace and not by works. That means that God gives us all the grace we will ever need at our salvation. Isn't this talk about means of grace or habits of grace unbiblical? No, We are told to grow in grace. Many of pauls prayers are that we would grow in our 2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. (ESV)Why do my habits matter? After all, I can’t lose my salvation. Once saved, always saved, right? So what’s the big deal? Since we are not saved by works, we should worry about works. Haggai Message – Misplaced PrioritiesSetting – Israel was sent into exile 586 BC. 70 years later, under Cyrus King of Persia, the remnant of Israel returned to Jerusalem. They were tasked with rebuilding the Temple. They started off strong, Temple foundation laid, City walls rebuilt. Events take place in 520 BC.  Misplaced Priorities Exposed Haggai 1:1-6 (ESV) – In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest: “Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.” Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, “Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.  1.      Judah, the Remnant of Israel - Job # 1 was to rebuild the temple. 2.      Why was the temple such a big deal? Without the temple the religious life of Israel was not what it could/should be. There was nowhere to make the required sacrifices. Nation was spiritually adrift… leading to disastrous results. 3.      Who is the “LORD of Hosts”? LORD – This is the covenant name of God YEHWAHHost - It refers to large numbers of soldiers and armies.  In this way, LORD of Hosts is the military name of God.4.      It was in this context that God sends Haggai to the nation to get their attention. a.       Haggai was a prophet – messenger of God. God’s Covenant Prosecutor.b.      God needed to get the nation’s attention. They had failed to uphold their end of the deal. 5.      God anticipates Israel’s objections. a.       Israel – Timing was just not right to obey God. God, you just don’t understand the pressures we are under…b.      God – But you seem to have time to fix up your homes… “paneled houses.”  c.       God – Is it right for you to enjoy all the creature comforts while my house lies in ruin? While my name is devalued and denigrated by the world? 6.      “Consider your ways” – God wants to get the nation to think about the “pressures” that they are facing. What were the excuses that the nation used? (vs 6): Crop Failure: “You have sown much, and harvested little.”Food Insecurity: “You eat, but you never have enough;” Drought: “you drink, but you never have your fill.” Sickness and Disease: “You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm.” Financial Distress: “And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.” 7.      Israel needed to see things from God’s Point of view. Their priorities were not God’s priorities. They put themselves before God. 8.      The bottom line is that our activities expose where our real priorities lie.
