What do you do when the Bible seems like it is speaking directly to you? Do you take it at face value or not? What about when the Bible seems completely foreign to you? Do you ignore those parts or not? These questions get asked throughout the Bible, but probably the most in the sections of the Bible written in the prose discourse literary style. Because of its direct communication and conversational language, the parts of the Bible written in prose discourse can seem like the parts of the Bible we should try to implement into our lives. But it only takes a little reading to see that application is sometimes more complex than it appears to be. When we build the skill of reading Biblical prose discourse, we develop the wisdom necessary to know when to apply what we read from the Bible, we understand with greater clarity when the Bible is speaking to us and when the Bible was only speaking to a particular audience, and we know when to ignore rulings in the Bible and when to hold firmly to specific commands.Time codes:0:00 - Intro 3:12 - Background Information22:22 - Rep #140:57 - Rep #201:04:30 - Rep #301:27:22 - Rep #401:43:28 - Rep #502:07:46 - Rep #6 02:40:28 - ConclusionAdditional Background Information Video:https://youtu.be/cOYOVEmlxnESOURCES:Definitions:https://www.ifioque.com/grammar/discoursehttps://www.k12reader.com/term/prose/Augustine quote:https://conciliarpost.com/theology-spirituality/augustine-biblical-interpretation/Books:Blue Parakeet by Scot McKnightHow to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Gordon Fee and Douglas StuartPodcast and Other Media:Bible Project Podcast: Episodes 1-7; 25-30;https://bibleproject.com/podcast/series/how-to-read-the-bible-series/How to read the New Testament Lettershttps://bibleproject.com/podcast/series/new-testament-letters/Bible Project Videos: Episodes 1-3; 13; 17-18https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH0Szn1yYNedn4FbBMMtOlGN-BPLQ54IHNever miss interpret the Bible again!https://youtu.be/lQLnHtWndsUTo listen to all of our skills in our How to Read the Bible Series, click below:Poetry:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWPZ8uqLtFEE2SJQ378OWtVsQNdApX9yLNarrative:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWPZ8uqLtFEECU8_hmByVo2ex542-LkizProse Discourse (other episodes):https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWPZ8uqLtFEGJPzkTtHHGefvG-JFm6aXp** Skill Building Document**Click below to download the skill-building document from our website. https://www.growingtruedisciples.com/podcast (Scroll down once you land on the page)_____________If you like this content, check out our website, Facebook page, and or YouTube channels.Website:growingtruedisciples.comFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/Nathan-Wiggins-Disciple-of-Jesus-Christ-109754203979303/Growing True Disciples YouTube Channel:https://youtube.com/channel/UCsyeBBZFuN8y1XmNGmQqAHQThe Skill Builders Podcast YouTube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOpSmWsc12l_aU2kJXfEadAThe Skill Builders Audio Podcast:https://theskillbuilderspodcast.buzzsprout.com#Luke923#1Timothy47

The Bible is full of amazing stories! However, reading stories in the Bible is slightly different than reading stories in another book. The Biblical authors have crafted the Bible's stories so that certain key elements help add additional meaning and significance to the story. Although many stories do this, the Bible takes it up a notch. Since about 43% of the Bible is written in narrative (story) form, the better we understand stories in the Bible, the better we will understand what God is trying to communicate to us. This podcast series is meant to help us understand Biblical stories better!SOURCES:Story Quote = https://www.tckpublishing.com/stories-matter/Characters Definition = https://literaryterms.net/character/#:~:text=A%20character%20is%20a%20person,still%20be%20a%20complete%20storySetting Definition = https://blog.reedsy.com/setting-of-a-story/Plot Conflict Definition = http://www.readwritethink.org › lesson802What is the story of the Bible about = https://bibleproject.com/explore/video/the-story-of-the-bible/Design Patterns Definition: https://d1bsmz3sdihplr.cloudfront.net/media/Study%20Notes/Design-Patterns-Narrative_Study-Notes.pdf (there is no one solid definition of a design pattern, but this document should help you have a better understanding of the term as well as see how I came up with my definition)Content:Bible Project Podcast: Episodes 1-16https://bibleproject.com/podcast/series/how-to-read-the-bible-series/Bible Project Videos: Episodes 1-8https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH0Szn1yYNedn4FbBMMtOlGN-BPLQ54IHTo listen to our series on how to build the skill of reading Biblical poetry, click below:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWPZ8uqLtFEE2SJQ378OWtVsQNdApX9yL** Skill Building Document**Click below to download the skill-building document from our website. https://www.growingtruedisciples.com/podcast (Scroll down once you land on the page)_____________If you like this content, check out our website, Facebook page, and or YouTube channels.Website:growingtruedisciples.comFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/Nathan-Wiggins-Disciple-of-Jesus-Christ-109754203979303/Growing True Disciples YouTube Channel:https://youtube.com/channel/UCsyeBBZFuN8y1XmNGmQqAHQThe Skill Builders Podcast YouTube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOpSmWsc12l_aU2kJXfEadA#Luke923#1Timothy47#Practicecast#ComePracticeWithUs#TheSkillBuildersPodcast

*******NOTE********We changed the name of the podcast while recording several episodes. When you hear "Growing True Disciples Practicecast" don't fear; you are in the right place. This skill is essential because ⅓ of the Bible is written in poetry. As disciples, the Bible is our authority and the source of our fundamental beliefs. To better understand the Bible, we need to take the time to read it, not only in it’s proper context but also in accordance with the genre it was written in.If I read a song like an essay, I miss a part of what the writer was attempting to communicate. If I read an essay like a song, I will miss out on some of what the writer was attempting to communicate. But if I sing a song like it’s written and read an essay like it’s written, I have the best chance of grasping all the writer was trying to communicate. That’s why this skill matters.
