Rick Meyers is a Kansas City, MO resident who built his home in 1994 under a set of rules from the City of Kansas City. Unfortunately, they keep changing the rules. He became involved in this because someone needed to get the word out and get folks involved.  What started off with dropping off notes at people's houses has grown to 4000+ members of a Facebook page, a PAC with a $250K fundraising goal and multiple opportunities to testify at KCMO City Council, Jackson County Legislature, the Missouri House of Representative and the Missouri Senate.  He, along with thousands of other Kansas City residents, will continue to fight this until they've secured legislation that their neighborhood will be protected - not just for this generation, but for generations to come.Facebook Group Page:  Stop the Lies!  Stop the Landfill!PAC website:  www.killthefill.orgSupport the showABC PodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alwaysbecoolpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/thebobbykerrInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/alwaysbecoolpodcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thebobbykerrYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@alwaysbecoolSummit LendingFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SummitLendingUSATwitter: https://twitter.com/SummitLendingUSInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/summitlendingusa/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/summitlendingkc/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/loantipskc
Dr. Grenita Lathan, Superintendent of Schools; Springfield, MODr. Grenita Lathan views her role as chief advocate for Springfield Public Schools, its students and employees. She takes that responsibility seriously and keeps her focus on efforts to positively impact the 24,500 students and 3,500 employees who learn and work at SPSFirst off, the superintendency seems to 1be one of the most rapidly changing roles in public education. In your opinion, what is the primary function of a superintendent of a large public school district today?Whether it's through School Improvement Plans, or working alongside stakeholders, legislators, etc - How important is it for you to have accessible and accurate data when making decisions about your district’s future?Have you noticed a correlation between parent engagement and student outcomes in your district?Preparing students for the “digital age” has been an evergreen term/phrase for the better part of 25 years now.  In 2023 what exactly does this look like anymore - “Preparing students for the digital age?”In my previous years as a public school teacher, I observed that large-scale technology rollouts can be disastrous in the absence of effective planning and implementation. Do you have any recommendations for other superintendents who are considering a district-wide tech initiative? The face of education is constantly changing. What is one recent trend that you think will have a major influence on school districts in the years to come?Is there one particular innovation or achievement that you are especially proud of in your time with Springfield?Generic and broad question - How do schools improve? Easy to say “test scores” or more resources or better teachers, etcSo UtopianFrom where we stand, the superintendent (like many “CEO” roles in organizations or companies) is a pretty thankless position.  How do you balance keeping the peace, motivating people, doing what’s best for kiddos, providing resources to educators, etc without it all crumbling down on your emotionally?I always found it interesting how far down the road school leadership groups are working on the Vision, Mission, and roadmap for where the district is going for the next 5-10 years.  Talk to us about how much preparation goes into getting a district to be a top-tier district. When a district needs/wants resources in order to improve facilities, etc how do bonds and levees work?During the 2022-2023 school year, Dr. Lathan’s work will focus around three key goals:Review and revise the strategic planIncreaSupport the showABC PodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alwaysbecoolpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/thebobbykerrInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/alwaysbecoolpodcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thebobbykerrYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@alwaysbecoolSummit LendingFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SummitLendingUSATwitter: https://twitter.com/SummitLendingUSInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/summitlendingusa/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/summitlendingkc/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/loantipskc

Cultivate KC is proud to introduce Brien Darby as our new Executive Director! Relocating to Kansas City with her husband and young daughter, Brien came to us from the Denver Botanic Gardens. She was born in K.C. and still has family here. We are so pleased and excited for you to get to know her.Brien’s food knowledge began in her childhood garden, where her father would set aside space for her brother and her to grow whatever they’d like. She helped with farms at her high school and college and appreciated the lessons farming gives to students as well as supplying food to the cafeterias. Her first paid farming job was at a 3-acre restaurant farm in Boulder. She created a crop plan to suit the needs of the five-restaurant group associated with the farm. By then she knew that growing food was her passion! To cut down her commute, she found a benefited position with the Denver Botanic Gardens and soon built a successful suite of urban agriculture programs.Brien learned of Cultivate KC in the summer of 2016 and thought it seemed like a one-stop shop for food access, urban agriculture training, support and advocacy. She’d been hoping for an opportunity to join the organization. When asked what excites her about working with Cultivate, Brien replied, “Who wouldn’t be excited by the magic that is watching a tiny seed planted in the ground, grow into a plant, produce a bounty, and craft the very seeds that will start the cycle over again?” She enjoys living with the seasons and understands that each year from death springs a renewal of life. Along with the Cultivate team, she’s excited to share these seasonal rhythms and lessons and make farming and food accessible to more people. She also recognizes that any job within the food system can be daunting, because we’re in some small part responsible for a supply chain that provides the most basic human need: food. She said, “if we approach our work with a level of respect and care deserving of our product and our customer, we should feel exalted and awed by what we can accomplish.”Comparing KC’s urban farming scene to those in other cities, one unique aspect Brien observes here is visibility. It seems in some parts of town, you can’t go a few blocks without seeing a community garden, urban farm or community orchard project. Compared to many other comparably sized cities, she also sees more of an emphasis on farming as a profession in the urban space. Some issues Brien sees that are not unique to K.C.’s urban farmers are the rising cost of land and competition from development as well as the myriad of challenges climate change brings. Eddie Perez | CEO of Equity Prime MortgageEddy’s father was on the Cuban national baseball team and arrived in Miami in 1964 after spending three days at sea, rowing from Cuba to freedom. He was homeless the first week in this country. With some kindness from the community and an entrepreneurial mindset, Eddy’s father bootstrapped and created his own construction business. Symbolism of boat in the office - Visitors sign the hull of the boat - Talk about thisEddy was able to see firsthand what freedom of mind, spirit, and career can do in someone's life.Eddy is an avid learner and says from his Father he has learned what it means to be a man, to be a father, and to be a friend. Born and raised in the working class city of Detroit, Michigan. So things were hard. I was raised by a single mother who taught me early on that the key to success was having a hard work ethic. That work ethic directly translates over to success in the mortgage industry. I started working food service jobs when I was 14 and learned early on the value of elite client service. As a youth, I fell in love with music and skateboarding. Those two communities were diverse, supportive, and got me through some tough times. Since I barely graduated high school, I thought I would pursue another one of my passions -  cooking. Flunked out of culinary school and worked hard in bars for a few years until I moved back to Michigan. I got a degree in English education. Much like educators, mortgage professionals help individuals overcome obstacles. Unfortunately, teaching didn’t pay well and I had a few friends that worked in the mortgage industry down at Quicken Loans. I started at UWM in May of 2016 as an Account Executive. Rode that for a year, but teaching was in my blood. I built a Sales Coaching Team here at UWM and eventually was selected as one of the individuals to build Success Track. In 2021, Mat had a vision to create a team to help mortgage professionals all across the country grow. One of the main things I’ve picked up from Mat, is the idea of Servant Leadership. I embrace that as a leader of the Partner Services Team. Work ethic, attitude, and the idea of reaching the top together is a mindset I embrace every day.The mortgage industry is 100,000 percent mindset based. If you wake up positive, you will make an impact, those impacts are little victories, those little victories add up to championships.theBobbyKerr.com | @thebobbykerr | SummitLendingUSA.com Support the showABC PodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alwaysbecoolpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/thebobbykerrInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/alwaysbecoolpodcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thebobbykerrYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@alwaysbecoolSummit LendingFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SummitLendingUSATwitter: https://twitter.com/SummitLendingUSInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/summitlendingusa/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/summitlendingkc/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/loantipskc
