A dear friend of mine Dr. James Rutkowski, the editor in chief of the journal of oral implantology, invited me to discuss with his residents at Jacksonville University,   Periodontal disease as a  public health issue with significant implications for individuals and communities. Given the rising prevalence of periodontal disease , particularly as demographics shift towards an older population more susceptible to the condition, 70% of adults over 65 suffer from periodontal disease. It's imperative to note that periodontal diseases is linked to poorer health outcomes. Given these facts and the link between periodontal disease and systemic co-morbidities, unchecked progression can pose significant costs burdens on the healthcare system, emphasizing the need for public health intervention.
Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. Primarily caused by bacterial infections resulting from the buildup of dental plaque, it triggers an immune response and leads to tissue destruction over time. If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause tooth loss and has been linked to various systemic health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, adverse pregnancy outcomes, Alzheimer and with the recent pandemic COVID-2, patients with periodontal disease exhibited more severe symptoms. In this interview we discussed how better improve the communication between the dentist and physician and touched on multiple issues in healthcare from AI to diversity and much more. I wish you a Happy listening.
The healthcare has seen a tremendous change in the last decade and it impacted physicians and dentist alike; ranging from merger and acquisition, to baby boomers being  over 64 years of age in 2025 with all the challenges of the aging population that will be living longer with all sort of chronic conditions. Periodontal disease is impactual on oral health and on the general health. It has an economic impact on this population that is living longer. On the other hand, a lot of investors are entering the healthcare space . The young dentist and physicians are choosing to work for corporation instead of owning their own practices.  Older  physicans and dentists that want to retire are forced to sell  their practices for corporation because of that. The patient is in the middle  and suffers the consequences good or bad. We discussed all of that with Dr. Braun, a professor at Weill Cornell medicine who is a healthcare economist. Enjoy...
This coming series  of the podcast focus on the importance of oral health and its relationship with systemic health. Neglecting oral care can increase risks of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, low birth weight and premature deliveries. Our teeth and gingiva play a crucial role in our overall health, and as dentists, it is our duty to educate and provide proper care for our patients and the physicians to embrace the fact that periodontal disease is a comorbidity to a broad range of systemic diseases. I am honored to kick start this series with the Dean of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Mark S. Wolff, where we'll explore the extensive consequences of overlooking dental care. Don't miss this enlightening conversation!
A proper examination of the oral cavity is crucial. It should start by a thorough visual inspection oof all the intra-oral soft tissue including cheeks, palate, throat, floor of the mouth and the tuberosity and retromolar areas.  the oral examination should include a periodontal charting that is thoroughly done, including probing of the pockets, recording recessions, amount of keratinized tissue and inspection for cavities. Radiographs are crucial in completing the inspection especially if we are looking for cavities, bone loss or any bone anomalies. You as a patient, you should expect this from your dentist and have the dentist examine you after the hygienist finished her work.  I hope you will enjoy this episode and that you will watch it on my channel on  you tube.
For over 3 decades the use of bone graft  has evolved and in particular the use of allograft providing us the clinicians a great source of unlimited graft in treating our cases. Still till today, some clinicians believe that autogenous bone  alone or in combination with xenograft is the golden standard. Is it really? Or is the Allograft the new golden standard?#biologyalwayswins #realbone #fundamentalsneverchange #setyourgoalandwalkyourwayback #periodontics #dentalimplants #boneregeneration #GBR #grafting
