Description

ADHD-ish is THE podcast for business owners with big ideas and busy brains, whether you have an “official” ADHD diagnosis, or not.

We have expanded our focus so regardless of your gender or whether you identify as an entrepreneur, soloist, small business owner, creative, independent professional, freelancer, etc) if you are driven and distracted, color outside the lines and think outside the box, this podcast is for you.

People with these traits are far more likely to start a business because we love novelty and autonomy. But, running a business can be lonely and exhausting.

Having so many brilliant ideas means dozens of projects you’ve started and offers you’ve brainstormed, but few you’ve actually launched. Choosing what to say "yes" to and what to catch and release is even harder. This is exactly why I created ADHD-ish.

Each episode offers practical strategies, personal stories, and expert insights to help you harness your active mind and turn potential distractions into business success.

From productivity tools to mindset shifts, you’ll learn how to do business your way by
embracing your neurodivergent edge and turning passion and purpose into profit.

If you're new here, I’m your host, Diann Wingert, a psychotherapist-turned-business coach and ADHD-ish serial business owner, who struggled for years with cookie-cutter advice meant for “normies” and superficial ADHD hacks that didn’t go the distance.

In ADHD-ish, I’m sharing the best of what I’ve learned from running my own businesses and working with clients who are like-minded and like-brained.

Note: ADHD-ish does have an explicit rating, not because of an abundance of “F-bombs” but because I embrace creative self-expression for my guests and myself.

So, grab those headphones if you have littles around, and don’t forget to hit Follow/Subscribe so you don’t miss a single episode. Oh, and if you love the show, reviews are appreciated and so is sharing ADHD-ish with others!

I am totally obsessed with helping women bust through their self-imposed limits and busting through my own.  For this week’s solo episode, we are kicking off a mini-series on the topic of upper limit issues - what they are, how to know if you have them (spoiler alert, if you are human, you DO…), and most importantly, how to eliminate them so you can reach your true potential. I have met countless intelligent, driven, ambitious women who unconsciously hold themselves back from the success, love, wellbeing, and genuine happiness that they deserve.  They label it self-sabotage, imposter complex, or doubt that they are truly committed to their dreams, and some of them are even shamed by their coaches when this happens, but upper limits are learned and what is learned can be unlearned. The term upper limit issue comes from the best-selling book, The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, Ph.D.  The concepts in this book have changed my life and are one of the cornerstones of my coaching philosophy.  If you have ever wondered why no matter how much you want to achieve your goals and how hard you work toward them, something always seems to get in the way, then you are going to want to listen to this episode, and come back for episodes 65 and 67 as well.  And, don’t forget to get the worksheet so you can apply what you learned to your own life. Freebie AlertIf you want to take a deeper dive into uncovering your upper limit issues, grab this worksheet! Identifying Your Upper Limits WorksheetLet’s connect on Instagram: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachdiannwingert/ The Driven Woman Facebook GroupThe place to be for entrepreneurial women who are ready to go from driven and distracted to focused, fired up, and flame retardant  (https://www.facebook.com/groups/thedrivenwoman) Work With MeIt’s not too late to make the summer of 2021 your kickoff to getting back into momentum & up-leveling your business and life. I Like Change

2021-02-0213:20

This episode is a solo show, in which Diann talks about how she loves change and shaking things up. She tells the stories of experiences with others who will do anything to avoid changes and being questioned for loving to change up things and as being unnatural or weird, and how being unsatisfied and having the fear of stagnation made her uproot her life from L.A. to Portland.Whether you love change or resist it, this is the perfect podcast for you as Diann tackles a controversial subject about embracing changes and evolving from them. She likes being an example of how change is part of human nature, and fear is learned.  Our podcast review this week comes from Postnotworking who says:“So many gems and inspiration, Diann I totally listen to your podcast and I love it! You are such a pleasure to listen to and have such an amazing message so relatable and practical. I’m so glad you started this podcast, many women will benefit, I’m sure. So keep it coming, and P.S. Happiness is 50-50

2020-12-0818:25

When was the last time you remember being sincerely happy with what’s going on in your life? Most people have something they wanted to have or to be in their life, and also take what they do have for granted. Most of us are more focused on what we think of as unhappiness or misfortune than we are on luck and joy. Happiness may be vague and considered immeasurable by scientists, but what if I told you that there’s a way how you can live a peaceful and happy life without the stressors that are bugging you? Yes, that’s completely true. But don’t expect everything to be on your side because in reality, fantasizing about things doesn’t actually make us any happier or satisfied if we finally managed to get our hands on them.Ready to dig deep and open your mind about the things that we need to accept, change, and/or improve in order to view the positive side of life? This week’s Pod Praise is from Anika, an online brand strategist and solopreneur success coach, who had this to say about The Driven Woman:  “I typically stream podcasts directly from my Echos in my home or from my home office - to my pleasure this morning while showering and washing my hair, I needed something a little more motivating but short so I said "Alexa, play the Driven Woman podcast" and the rest is history!! I love how short these episodes are, I don't feel like I have to commit a chunk of time of my day to get value. Introducing “ADHD-ish” 🌟It’s been an amazing four-year journey since I launched The Driven Woman Entrepreneur podcast, and it’s time for an evolution. There are times when we are confronted with other people’s problems. We listen to them talk about their lives and sometimes, hear them complain. Many women find themselves involved in situations with other people that they had no intention of being in. Not only are we socialized to care about others, but even our estrogen hormone influences us to be more willing to put the needs of others before our own. If we are not intentional with how we respond to other people’s problems, it will disrupt our routines, our peace of mind, and the time we have available to deal with our own.Group coaching available this Fall 2020! Join the Ignition Group Coaching WaitlistYou are serious about addressing your distractibility, procrastination, and perfectionism & their impact on your business and life, and going through the process with like-minded and like brained women is exactly what you need. Many people put pressure on themselves to figure out their path in life when they barely even know who they are. Those early messages from so-called authority figures can be hard to forget, especially when most people do seem to follow that advice, whether it suits them or not. Some people just pick and stick and never give themselves permission to change course and do something else. What they didn’t know is that there really is no one right way, not anymore. With the speed of change in the modern workplace, it’s really not such a great idea to get too attached to any one particular way of working or earning a living. If you find yourself wanting to do something else, maybe it's time to consider starting something new, whether it's in the same field or a new one. Group coaching available this Fall 2020! Join the Ignition Group Coaching WaitlistYou are serious about addressing your distractibility, procrastination, and perfectionism & their impact on your business and life, and going through the process with like-minded and like brained women is exactly what you need. Perfectionism may seem to be a good trait, but when you procrastinate on your plans because you want everything to be just right, this becomes a hindrance to achieving your goals. The real definition of a perfectionist is not someone whose life is perfect, it's someone who believes that it could be, wishes it were and suffers because it isn't.A perfectionist sets very high expectations of themselves and others. They believe that a task is not finished when it does not meet their standards, or they never even begin a task unless they know they can do it perfectly. The standards that they set not only apply to how they work but it is also the same for how they evaluate other people’s performance. In this episode, I want to tell you how perfectionism can slow you down, and why we need to manage it. I AM a perfectionist and always have been, and I want to share with you how I deal with my perfectionism.  You are serious about addressing your distractibility, procrastination, and perfectionism & their impact on your business and life, and going through the process with like-minded and like brained women is exactly what you need. Everyone gets to experience the ups and downs of life. There are no exemptions. There are moments when things do not go our way or something unexpected happens, and it is a situation we don’t want to be in. When confronted with difficult circumstances, how you perceive and respond to them will make things better or worse. There are some people who tend to look at the bright side regardless of what’s happening to them. They see their lives as something that they co-create and have control over. On the other hand, there are those who constantly complain about their situation and even blame themselves or others. They see life as something that is happening to them and believe that it’s just how it is. In this episode, I want to share with you how gratitude can transform your life from the inside out and how you truly hold the key to transforming your life, regardless of the circumstances. Group coaching available this Fall 2020! Join the Ignition Group Coaching WaitlistYou are serious about addressing your distractibility, procrastination, and perfectionism & their impact on your business and life, and going through the process with like-minded and like brained women is exactly what you need. When we are so focused on a goal, we can forget to stop and take in the big picture. Most driven people tend to zoom in or hyper-focus on their goals and on doing whatever is necessary to achieve them. Paying so much attention to those things means everything else going on around them just fades to black. Being hyper-focused on our goals is a good thing but we don’t want to forget to zoom out as well. Without stepping back or zooming out and looking at the big picture, we may be missing out on what is truly important.  The ability to zoom in and zoom out is a mindfulness practice. This helps with distractibility, anxiety, and focus. In this episode, we talk about what it means to zoom in and zoom out and share an exercise on how to develop the awareness and skill.  This episode is brought to you by:The Driven Woman Facebook GroupThe place to be for like-minded and like-brained women who want an ADHD friendly business and life  (https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoaching) Diann Wingert CoachingIf you’re ready to invest in turbocharging your progress, with expert guidance, support, and accountability from a coach who really gets you and can shave decades off your learning curve  (https://www.diannwingertcoaching.com)  Social SharingFacebook:  https://www.facebook.com/diannwingertcoaching/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachdiannwingert/ LinkedIn:   https://www.linkedin.com/in/diannwingertcoaching/
We all have stories, stories about ourselves, and stories about others. Some of these stories inspire us or drive us to do better. When our stories strengthen our belief in ourselves, our actions and decisions will reinforce them. If we believe we’ll do well and that we’re beautiful inside and out, these beliefs will be reflected in all that we think and do. But before this happens, before we can truly live in alignment with our full potential,  it is important for women with ADHD to accept that we actually have ADHD.  We need to unload our old story and own up to the reality of being so much more than our anxiety, depression, or perfectionism. Women with ADHD need also to challenge their negative thoughts about themselves and redirect them into thinking of ways to do and be better, without judgment. In doing so, one must be kinder to oneself.Sometimes due to our rough childhood or unfortunate circumstances, we are lead to believe that we should more critical about ourselves in order to do our best. But sooner or later, we will realize this doesn’t actually work.  We can literally change our view of ourselves, our potential, our future, and our chances for success, by changing the story we have been telling ourselves. Once you change your story, you can truly change your life.
Episode # 8 - Late to the ADHD PartyOne of the reasons that women tend to be diagnosed with ADHD later in life than men is because our symptoms appear to be different but if you look past society’s expectations, just as many girls are likely to be identified as boys.  Women with ADHD, depending on their subtype and especially if their hyperactivity is mental instead of physical, may not recognize themselves as someone with ADHD.  Many women would be considered high-functioning, as well, but they are still falling short of their true potential. In this episode, we talk about why and share an exercise for how to think about your history through a new lens.
Driven women have their own idea and way of how to get things done. Most of the time it is to an extent where the best must be achieved. Others may perceive it as being too much of a perfectionist or demanding. And because of this, most women who work in the corporate world and decide to venture into independent entrepreneurship often find themselves loading too much work for themselves because of hesitancy to ask for help. Working with a business coach has loads of benefits, a particular one would be that with a coach, more perspectives and troubleshooting are covered to guarantee business to run smoothly and be more profitable. Help doesn’t have to be in the form of professional help all the time, though. Small groups or convened communities could also work. But before actually asking for help, you have to first admit that you need one. For women who have put up their own businesses or are about to put up their own businesses or are about to, it’s best to remember that there is no shame in asking for help if you’re having difficulty with work. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You don’t have to carry it all and walk the stairs, you can use a lift every now and then. Don’t suppress the mess, it’s meant to lead you to know yourself better and redirect you to the things that will serve your purpose.  The Driven Woman Facebook GroupThe place to be for like-minded and like-brained women who want an ADHD friendly business and life  (https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoaching) Diann Wingert CoachingIf you’re ready to invest in turbocharging your progress, with expert guidance, support, and accountability from a coach who really gets you and can shave decades off your learning curve  (https://www.diannwingertcoaching.com) Social SharingFacebook:  https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoachingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/diannwingertcoaching/   LinkedIn:   https://www.linkedin.com/in/diannwingertcoaching/

A Woman with a Plan

2020-06-1609:48

Most of the time, people take delight or get excited more on the planning part of activities rather than the actual ‘doing’ part. Driven women are particularly not immune to this since they always have places they plan to go to, projects they want to get done, and people they want to meet. If one is not so keen on how to schedule their activities, it may get quite frustrating and counterproductive. Strategic planning allows driven women to provide a proper sense of direction to what they’re doing and crafting troubleshooting solutions in case there are unexpected things that will come into play. Some time in one’s life, you will realize that enthusiasm is not enough to carry a situation or event, especially when you have other people in the boat with you. It takes careful considerations and a feasible plan to work things out without feeling short-handed or frustrated when things don’t go as expected. With neuroplasticity, we are taught that our brain is capable of adapting to change regardless of age. That is why it is never too early or late to try and take action in honing yourself to plan better for events and activities, whether small or big.The Driven Woman Facebook GroupThe place to be for like-minded and like-brained women who want an ADHD friendly business and life  (https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoaching) Diann Wingert CoachingIf you’re ready to invest in turbocharging your progress, with expert guidance, support, and accountability from a coach who really gets you and can shave decades off your learning curve  (https://www.diannwingertcoaching.com) Social SharingFacebook:  https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoachingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/diannwingertcoaching/   LinkedIn:   https://www.linkedin.com/in/diannwingertcoaching/
Episode #5 - Driving With The Emergency  Brakes OnMost women with ADHD operate with a fast-moving brain that is difficult to stop. However, since women are more relationship-oriented and tend to follow rules more effectively, they tend to be able to suppress their hyperactivity with an effective and more controlled response to certain situations. This is what I call driving with emergency brakes on.Sooner or later, this suppression can manifest in the form of anxiety, depression, chronic headaches, and various types of obsessive mannerisms and thinking.  This in turn may become problematic and further hinder women to function as they should, without limiting their potential...I believe that the key for women with ADHD to fully realize their gifts is to own to their sense of self and skip normality.  It may help to embrace this by choosing a field or career that maximizes our need for fast pace and high energy.  One can work in a single field or have multiple careers for as long as the activities align with one’s vivacity and principles.  One can also make changes within their environment that will fit their personality and needs. It’s never too late (or too early) to realize that it's time to release the emergency brake and fully live to your true potential.Referred to in this episode:Edward Hallowell’s “Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most out of Life with Attention Deficit Disorder” This episode is brought to you by:The Driven Woman Facebook GroupThe place to be for like-minded and like-brained women who want an ADHD friendly business and life  (https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoaching) Diann Wingert CoachingIf you’re ready to invest in turbocharging your progress, with expert guidance, support, and accountability from a coach who really gets you and can shave decades off your learning curve  (https://www.diannwingertcoaching.com) Social SharingFacebook:  https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoachingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/diannwingertcoaching/   LinkedIn:   https://www.linkedin.com/in/diannwingertcoaching/
A growing number of people, especially women, are opting for the unstable, insecure, risky, and exciting path of working for themselves, either in partnership, collaboration with others, or flying solo. And most of them would choose to do it again, even if they aren't experiencing the level of success they set out for.Choosing the self-employment path typically means financial instability and insecurity, social and emotional isolation, added stress and pressure on romantic/intimate relationships, and increased challenges with mental health, but certain personal attributes may contribute to both choosing the entrepreneurial path and being successful as an entrepreneur.  I don't believe there is one type of person who is destined to be an entrepreneur, nor do I believe that all entrepreneurs are alike. There are many different paths to entrepreneurship and many different personalities that succeed in this lifestyle. But what I do believe is that there are several personality attributes or characteristics that make it more likely that a person will choose to be an entrepreneur sooner or later and in this episode, I share them with you. Referred to in this episode:Seth Godin’s Blog:  “A Job Without a Boss: Are you a freelancer or an entrepreneur?”Entrepreneur: Those with ADHD Might Make Better Entrepreneurs. In this episode, Diann talks about how most people think that their brain works on their behalf, helping them to achieve their personal happiness, but little do people know the hard truth that it really doesn’t operate this way, but rather the other way around. It is true that our brain can be likened to a computer with regard to how it operates, but unlike a computer, our brain never gets an upgrade, updates, or even extra storage so thoughts we adopted as children continue to drive our thinking in spite of years of life experience.  The brain is focused on the prime directive of your survival instead of your continued growth and learning,.  As a result, the brain is resistant to change, that is why it takes much of a person’s will and effort to change the way we think.  The good news is that you can do something about it and that’s what we’ll discuss in this episode. This episode is brought to you by:The Driven Woman Facebook GroupThe place to be for like-minded and like-brained women who want an ADHD friendly business and life  (https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoaching) Diann Wingert CoachingIf you’re ready to invest in turbocharging your progress, with expert guidance, support, and accountability from a coach who really gets you and can shave decades off your learning curve  (https://www.diannwingertcoaching.com) Social SharingFacebook:  https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoachingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/diannwingertcoaching/   LinkedIn:   https://www.linkedin.com/in/diannwingertcoaching/

Imposter Complex

2020-05-1912:21

One of the things that is the most frustrating to a woman with ADHD is that she usually can’t produce her brilliance on demand.  Try as she might, her creative, innovative, intuitive, out of the box abilities aren’t available to her at all times, like an ATM machine she can always make a withdrawal from.  Sometimes she appears to be an absolute genius at work at life, and other times she feels like a hot mess loser. This can result in a pretty nasty case of Imposter Complex, which is not an actual psychological disorder, but a pretty common cause that holds many bold, brilliant, badass women back from achieving their full potential. In this episode, Diann talks about Imposter Complex and why women with ADHD are particularly prone to experiencing it. Imposter Complex is the term used to explain why gifted women tend to dismiss their success as being the result of luck, being in the right place at the right time, or even diversity policies, rather than grit, determination, and brilliance.  We might believe that we are being held back by others, but we often accept less than we want and deserve because of our own self-doubts and insecurities.Diann also refers to the importance of living in your Zone of Genius, another important concept from the popular book, The Big Leap by author Gay Hendricks and how doing so is one of the most significant changes we can make to start creating an ADHD friendly business and lifestyle. Mentioned in this episode: Imposter Complex (link to Tanya Geisler’s TED-x talk) https://youtu.be/J3Em-IIAQ6IThe Big Leap by Gay Hendricks ( link to Amazon.com listing) https://www.amazon.com/Big-Leap-Conquer-Hidden-Level/dp/0061735361This episode is brought to you by:The Driven Woman Facebook GroupThe place to be for like-minded and like-brained women who want an ADHD friendly business and life  (https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoaching) Diann Wingert CoachingIf you’re ready to invest in turbocharging your progress, with expert guidance, support, and accountability from a coach who really gets you and can shave decades off your learning curve  (https://www.diannwingertcoaching.com) Social SharingFacebook:  https://facebook.com/diannwingertcoachingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/diannwingertcoaching/   LinkedIn:   https://www.linkedin.com/in/diannwingertcoaching/
If you have an interest-based brain,  the fact that a task, project, or goal is important isn’t always enough to get yourself to do what needs to be done, especially if it happens to be important to someone else, but not to you.  This leads to all kinds of resistance, procrastination, and outright avoidance and this is one of the aspects of being an adult with ADHD that is the most frustrating.  But, what if you understood that your brain works differently and important is not the driver that gets you going?   In this episode,  Diann shares her concept of the Four ADHD Drivers, which she playfully refers to as Fancy, Gritty, Shiny, and Fomo and why you need to figure out how to make the task at hand more like one of them in order to get yourself to take action.   Hey, we don’t always get to do only the things that we are really interested in, but it’s no surprise that those who are able to create a life based on their interests are able to leverage their ADHD gifts in the most powerful way.  Think Michelle Rodriguez (acclaimed actress), Simone Biles (Olympic gymnast) and Lisa Ling (award-winning journalist) who have created highly successful careers around their interests, because of, not in spite of their ADHD.This episode is brought to you by:If you’re ready to invest in turbocharging your progress, with expert guidance, support, and accountability from a coach who really gets you and can shave decades off your learning curve. > Diann Wingert CoachingSocial SharingFacebook:  https://bit.ly/DWC-FacebookInstagram: https://bit.ly/DWC-InstagramLinkedIn:   https://bit.ly/DWC-LinkedIn
Sometimes, we don’t have the option of masking, hiding, and attempting to fit in.  As a female of color from an unstable family, today’s guest Mina Raver dropped out of high school after being identified as gifted and diagnosed with ADHD, Autism, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder.  This set her on a non-conventional path that has dramatically accelerated her growth. Mina has been developing solutions for neurodivergent individuals for years, but being selected as a Techstars participant in 2024 taught her the importance of doing things her way, which has led to the Better CEO app. Better CEO leverages neuroscience, human learning modalities, and machine learning to create the world's first individually adaptive productivity software, designed for the 30% of entrepreneurs who struggle with productivity due to ADHD. Better CEO is available now in the mobile version and will soon be available in the desktop version as well.  Because so many adults with ADHD struggle to find software and other tools that actually work for us, I consider becoming an early adopter of Better CEO to be an opportunity to contribute to making this app everything we need it to be, through sharing our feedback with a developer who actually cares. Once you listen to this interview, I bet you will too. Episode Highlights:Disruptive AF: With no technical background, Mina taught herself to code and is building tools to revolutionize productivity for neurodivergent brains. Redefining Productivity: Dive into Mina's holistic approach to understanding brains and hear why she believes current productivity standards just aren't cut out for neurodivergent folk.Passion Over Profit: Discover why Mina opted out of traditional funding pursuits and chose to pave her distinctive path, focusing on genuine impact rather than investor expectations.Own Your Narrative: Mina liberated herself from people-pleasing and permission-seeking, setting an example for other neurodivergent visionaries ready to claim their space and impact the world on their terms.Mic Drop Moment: 🎙️"I learned early that no submission is ever enough for reprieve." If you are a neurodivergent business owner, one of the biggest challenges can be leading a team, especially if you lead an all-female team in a female-dominated industry like occupational therapy.  Today’s Client Success Story features Kirsten Beukes, who is the owner of an OT group practice in South Africa. Through our work together, Kirsten came to understand how her ADHD affects her business and her team, what her business needs from her, and how to reduce burnout and increase joy through doing less, not more.  Here are three key takeaways from our conversation:Leadership Mindset Shift: Transitioning from a practice owner to a business owner mindset allowed Kirsten to differentiate her personal identity from the needs of the business. This distinction has been crucial in making decisions that benefit long-term success, not just immediate needs.Using Owner Days to Create Boundaries & Perspective: By designating one day a week away from the practice for strategic planning and decision-making, Kirsten was able to focus on bigger-picture issues, and reclaim her time. This shift allowed for better work-life integration and also empowered her team to step up and grow. The Power of Self-Acceptance: Recognizing and accepting how her giftedness and ADHD were affecting her business has been a game-changer. This self-awareness has made Kirsten a more effective leader and manager.Fun Fact from the Episode: Due to her change in perspective and shift in priorities, Kirsten recently adopted a puppy named Lemon. Not only is Lemon an adorable new addition to her life, but she’s also training to be a therapy dog for her practice! 🐾❤️Want to connect with Kirsten? Website -  LinkedInAre you ready to become one of my Client Success Stories?  Let’s connect and see if now is the time.  Click here to schedule a free consultation. Are you Going to Neurodiversion 2025 in Austin, TX March 27-29th? I’ll be there too, and hosting a Meetup for Neurodivergent Entrepreneurs and Business Owners.  DM me on LinkedIn or send me an email to let me know. So many small business owners obsess about how their ADHD struggles make things more challenging, but there is a bigger picture at play.  When you identify your ADHD strengths and use them as your competitive advantage, now you are cooking with gas.  My friend, Iris Goldfeder is a marketing strategist and owner of Gas Stove Creative.  She joins us today to talk about how she leans into her ADHD strengths of empathy, systems thinking, strategic listening, and radical authenticity to run her successful marketing agency.  Iris lives in Indiana with Heather, her wife of 22 years. In addition to her rather impressive collection of Star Wars memorabilia, Iris is a musician and member of the band “The Infringements,” a dog mom and fellow enthusiast of F-bombs and radical authenticity.  Here are three key takeaways from our conversation:👉 Systems Thinking as an ADHD Strength: Iris emphasized the importance of having team members who understand the interrelated pieces of the puzzle. This holistic approach ensures smoother operations and greater overall success.👉 Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Empathy is a crucial skill for understanding and addressing client needs effectively. Iris shared how truly listening enables you to envision solutions and build deeper, more meaningful client relationships.👉 Authenticity Over People Pleasing: Being true to who you are not only attracts the right kind of clients but also allows you to bring your best, most creative self to your work.Fun Fact from the Episode: Iris has a "fuck jar.” It's an oh-so-relatable way of managing those moments when you just run out of fucks to give. In today's fast-paced world, email management is a critical skill, but for those with ADHD,  constantly checking email can become an addictive habit and the source of our greatest distraction. Email acts as a digital slot machine for those with ADHD, creating a dopamine-driven cycle of constant checking in search of novelty and stimulation. This behavior is about immediate gratification and coping with executive function challenges like task initiation and priority setting. By understanding how your brain responds to these stimuli, you can begin to develop more intentional habits. The cost of this unconscious compulsion is a lot higher than you realize because compulsive email checking acts as a crutch for avoiding more significant tasks. The perceived productivity of responding to emails is misleading and can detract from meaningful work. The worst part?  Email-induced task-switching destroys focus. It takes up to 23 minutes for neurotypical brains to refocus after a switch, and for ADHD brains, it’s even longer. A key takeaway from the episode is that being constantly available via email is often unnecessary and can be counterproductive. Setting specific email hours can actually enhance client perceptions of professionalism. Shared in this Episode: Dedicated Email Blocks Start by setting two defined email blocks per day. This limits distractions and prevents email from dictating your schedule. Use autoresponders to set client expectations and provide alternative contact methods for emergencies. The 3-Folders SystemSimplify your inbox with three primary folders — “Action Required,” “Waiting For,” and “Archive.” This method streamlines email management, reducing the clutter and stress of a crowded inbox.Leveraging Email Templates:Create templates for routine responses. This reduces cognitive load and enhances efficiency. Customize these for common client questions, project updates, and scheduling queries.Ultimately, email management is not merely about efficiency but about owning your worth as an entrepreneur. Running a business should offer freedom, not bind you to other people's priorities. By fostering better boundaries, entrepreneurs can build better work habits, which in turn boosts confidence and productivity. It's essential to remember that you are not always at others' beck and call. Your time and attention are invaluable, so it’s time to let your inbox serve you, not the other way around.Mentioned in this episode:TidyCal - the online calendar that prevents me from overscheduling & sends reminders to my clients so I don’t have to Now What?  Ready to start dealing with your Inbox? Most soloists I know want to make a living on their own terms, but many are also driven by a bigger vision of making a difference,  infusing both passion and purpose into their work. Have you ever wondered if you and your business could start a revolution?  I sat down with Rochelle Moulton, a brand strategist, author, podcaster, and advocate for soloist consultants doing work that truly matters to discuss what it really means to have a mission-driven business. Unlike the political or violent imagery often associated with the term, we discussed revolution in the context of business and life. A revolution, as Rochelle defines it, is about driving change with a purpose. Whether you aim to support queer-owned businesses, protect undeveloped land, or empower the neurodivergent community, your business can be a vehicle for transformative impact.Practical Steps to Start Your Own RevolutionIdentify Your Mission: Reflect on what passionately bothers you about the status quo in your area of expertise and what change you want to lead. Experiment & Iterate: Don't jump in without a plan. Start with small, manageable steps. Evaluate what works and build on that. This allows you to maintain momentum without feeling overwhelmed or losing your drive.Align With Allies: Build a network of like-minded individuals who support your mission. This can involve collaborations with other businesses, partnerships with influencers in your field, or joining relevant communities.Monetize Wisely: Ensure your revolutionary idea can sustain you financially. Balance your passion with market viability. Think about how to price your services, the channels to reach your audience, and how to scale sustainably.Stay True to Yourself: Authenticity is key. Match your revolution to your genius zone. Play to your strengths, whether it's writing, speaking, or connecting deeply one-on-one.Fun Fact:Rochelle introduced the concept of a “situational extrovert”, describing people who are usually introverted but light up and slay the room when discussing their passions and expertise. Today’s guest on the ADHD-ish podcast is my client, Anne Levine, a professional coach whose unique approach is centered around creating change that sticks. With a passion for integrating past successes into new ventures, Anne Levine specializes in guiding clients through the complexities of ADHD and personal growth challenges. For a number of reasons, many individuals with ADHD struggle with substance abuse, and achieving long term sobriety requires a deep understanding of not only how to change our beliefs and behaviors, but how to sustain them. With 30 years in recovery, Anne brings a profound understanding about achieving lasting change to her coaching practice. Because her background is so varied and her experience is rich, Anne was struggling to hone in on her specific niche and unique coaching framework.  As a former therapist with several careers under my belt,  who also has ADHD, I understood her challenge and knew exactly how to help her.  And, I knew she was ready, when she said:"I want to deliver something so clear so that my client can say, 'This is what I did. For generations, adults with ADHD have struggled to find workplaces and career paths that allow them to succeed, and usually ended up feeling like a square peg in a round hole.  Those who have been able to figure out where their ADHD strengths fit best often did so after years of trial and error or were lucky enough to have a coach, mentor or parent who pointed them in the right direction.   But what if job crafting for ADHD strengths was accessible for all?  I came across an article in ADDitude magazine about ADHD and job crafting and decided to reach out to the author.  Mark is a licensed psychologist in private practice, a professor of psychology at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania and the lead researcher on an innovative project to help individuals craft careers in alignment with their ADHD strengths.  He's currently working on a book that expands on these ideas, combining personal anecdotes, professional insights, and extensive research.Episode Overview:Occupational Typecasting for ADHD: Mark discusses the myth that certain jobs naturally align better with ADHD traits, but this doesn’t mean individuals with ADHD can't excel in other fields.Job Crafting: Introduction of "job crafting" or "curating" as a method where individuals map out their job tasks to align with their strengths and seek support for more challenging tasks.Misinterpreted Symptoms: How symptoms like boredom and disengagement are misinterpreted as laziness rather than a need for more meaningful work.Underachievement Relative to Potential: The focus on disruptive behavior over subtle signs of ADHD in settings like schools and workplacesDelayed Diagnosis, Especially Among Women: Examination of how societal standards and internalized negative feedback can result in delayed ADHD diagnoses.ADHD as a Superpower: Critique of the "ADHD as a superpower" narrative and its oversimplification of individual experiences.Mentioned by Dr Sciutto during the interview: Buzz: a Year of Paying Attention by Katherine EllisonADDitude magazine article on Scott Eyre, pitcherWant to find out more about Mark Sciutto’s work or his upcoming book? Click here for his email address. If your search for an ADHD-friendly career path has lead you to small business ownership or entrepreneurship, you are not alone. Happy New Year! 🎆As we step into 2025, many of us are brimming with hopes, dreams, and maybe some New Year's resolutions. But if you're anything like me—and I know many of you are—traditional resolutions might last as long as bubbles in a can of carbonated water.  Fizzy, but fleeting. That's why I’ve dedicated the final episode of the year to exploring alternatives that are a bit more ADHD-friendly: Theming and Nudging. These techniques are designed to work with our brain’s need for novelty and reward, while allow us to last beyond the two week fade effect and get some genuine consistency going.  🔎 Theming: A Flexible Roadmap to Achievement When goals feel too rigid, we end up resenting, then rebelling, right?  That’s why theming might just be your golden ticket. Instead of specific resolutions, choose a theme to guide your actions and choices. Think of it as steering your life in a desired direction, instead of the overly detailed GPS guidance.   Example Themes: Strength, Connection, Creativity, Curiosity, Growth.🌟 Pro tip: Choose three areas of your life—like health, money, and relationships—to apply your theme. Need a reminder? Create a screensaver or even use a sticker chart! 🔄 Nudging: Gentle Reminders for Big Changes Nudging starts with the same letter as nagging, but that’s where the similarity ends. Introducing small nudges (friendly taps or tugs)  into your routine can lead to significant improvements over time. Set up periodic reminders to guide you towards beneficial actions—like moving, drinking water, or taking short breaks. Everything counts and they really do add up. Real-Life Nudge: My client has reminders set for  "Walk" and "Water" to help her break up lengthy periods of hyper focus, which cause her to neglect her biological needs. How to get Started:Reflect on the past year.Choose a theme that inspires and guides you.Set up nudges to gently steer your behaviors.Let go of guilt and embrace incremental progress. With either approach, the key is flexibility. Adjust, adapt, and own these strategies to make them work for YOUR body, mind and brain. And remember, whether it's a theme, a nudge, or a mix of both—what truly matters is finding simply ways to align your behavior with your intentions, keeping you engaged without feeling overwhelmed or getting bored. Ever wonder why it always seems like you have said “yes” to more than you can effectively manage, when you have ADHD?  Impulsivity and people pleasing tendencies play a role, but our unique relationship with time that might be the biggest factor, making business success a lot more challenging.  We have trouble accurately estimating how much time, energy and effort our commitments actually take, especially when they are shiny and new. A neurotypical person has a 12-16 week “time horizon” on average, while ours can feel a lot closer to 12-16 minutes at times. The reason for this time distortion is that ADHD brains tend to perceive time in just two categories: Now and Not Now,  whatever we are focused on at the moment, and everything else, from an hour from now to the rest of our lives. Before I share specific strategies for “stretching” your time horizon, We will identify your specific overcommitment style—impulsivity, people-pleasing, perfectionism or FOMO. Then, I’ll help you build a time horizon toolkit for more realistic planning and better decisions in general.   What you’ll get from this episode:Emphasize making space for what matters mostSet intentional limits & boundaries for future successFewer mistakes, apologies and regrets. Use these strategies as a pattern interrupt to increase mindful actionRemember, the key to managing your commitments with ADHD is not about squeezing more in, but about making space for what truly matters. Welcome back to another enlightening episode of ADHD-ish! I'm your host, Diann Wingert, and my guest is burnout coach for highly sensitive and neurodivergent women, Paula Liub. In this timely discussion, we'll explore why hydration, nutrition, sleep, and physical activity are essential for effective executive functioning and how hyper focus can sometimes lead us to neglect these basic needs. Paula will give us practical strategies to reduce burnout, emphasizing the importance of pre-planning, simplifying tasks, and setting realistic boundaries. We'll also dissect the societal pressures to overwork and misunderstandings surrounding burnout and ADHD, and why mindfulness, often resisted by those with ADHD, can be a game-changer Highlights of our conversation:The Role of Interoception and BoundariesInteroception, or the sense of internal body signals, plays a crucial role in managing burnout. Neurodivergent women often face challenges in perceiving their own needs and setting appropriate boundaries.  Hyperfocus may increase productivity, but often leads to neglecting or ignoring our needs.  Listen for tips for how to balance the two. Mindfulness Over PerfectionismPaula and I discuss the benefits of mindfulness as a preventive strategy that helps protect us from burnout. Mindfulness is not just about meditation but involves being intentional with daily actions and choices. Paula defines mindfulness as paying attention to the present moment, understanding the benefits and consequences of actions, and adjusting habits to avoid negative side effects, such as excessive screen time.Planning with FlexibilityThe holiday season can exacerbate stress and pressure, especially for neurodivergent women. Paula suggests practical strategies such as pre-planning events with rest periods and simplifying tasks like gift shopping. I shared my favorite strategy for “stretching” our time horizon: using a wall-sized dry erase calendar that encourages us to anticipate future events and needs. Paula Liub is a burnout coach for sensitive, neurodivergent women, who combines a degree in psychology with two decades of experience in mindfulness practices and other strategies for emotional regulation and self awareness. Here’s how to connect with Paula: Website - LinkedIn - Neurodivergent Wellness Basics Newsletter One of the most common reasons female entrepreneurs, creatives and small business owners hire me is because “business as usual” is leading them toward burnout.  Sometimes the changes we need to make involve better boundaries with clients and team members,  sometimes we need to raise our prices and restrict the scope of our work.  These changes can be really hard to commit to and implement without guidance, support and accountability. If you have (or suspect you have ADHD) and are struggling to fall asleep at a "normal" hour, wake up feeling groggy, or find yourself alert and restless late at night, you might be dealing with something called Delayed Phase Sleep Syndrome, or DSPS.  It's not just insomnia or anxiety—it’s a circadian rhythm sleep disorder that often goes misunderstood and misdiagnosed. We'll explore how DSPS differs from the more commonly discussed "revenge bedtime procrastination," which is the habit of staying up late to reclaim a bit of personal time after a busy day. I will also delve into effective treatments like light therapy and melatonin, and discuss how understanding your sleep patterns can be a game changer for those balancing ADHD and entrepreneurship. So, if sleep's been your nemesis, this episode will help you learn how you can finally get the rest you deserve.Understanding DSPS:Unlike insomnia or general sleep problems, DSPS aligns your internal clock much later. It’s not a result of poor sleep hygiene or bad habits,  it’s an actual condition in both ICD and DSM diagnostic manuals.Revenge Bedtime Procrastination vs. DSPS:Revenge bedtime procrastination involves deliberately delaying sleep for fun or relaxation, when one feels their day is too packed with responsibilities and too little time for some self indulgence like scrolling social media or bingeing a Netflix series. DSPS is about a genuine inability to fall asleep at typical times. Both are common among those with ADHD and are often confused with each other. Treatment for DSPS:Gradual exposure to bright light in the morning and reducing light exposure before bedtime can help recalibrate your internal clock. Click here for a list of light therapy products recommended by the Yale School of Medicine Dept of PsychiatrySleep specialists often suggest a 3 mg dose of melatonin taken around 9 PM to help initiate sleep. Click here for the Medical News Today article on treatment options. Click here for blue light blocking (orange) glasses. Fun Fact 🧠✨Morning exposure to natural daylight—even on a cloudy day—has a more beneficial effect on aligning your circadian rhythm than indoor lights. The modern workplace now contains an unprecedented five generations of workers, with very different ideas about leadership and the importance of authenticity.  In the last few years we have experienced The Great Resignation, Quiet Quitting and the rise of employees at all levels leaving their 9 to 5 to start their own business, so clearly it's time for change. In this episode of ADHD-ish,  I welcome returning guest Ruth Rathblott to discuss these challenges and the need for self-awareness and connection in the workplace. Many of us are hiding and others might be sharing too much.  What are the rules and how do we know what to do if what we want is to feel safe, do our best work and experience genuine belonging? In this empowering episode, Ruth and I talk about the transformation that occurs when people start "unhiding"—openly sharing their stories and building stronger, more authentic connections. This mutual sharing not only creates a sense of belonging but can also significantly reduce feelings of isolation and burnout, issues all too common in the modern workplace. 🔑 Key Takeaways:Generational Leadership:  How younger workers demand for transparency is reshaping traditional leadership styles.Strategic Hiding: The delicate balance of revealing personal aspects at work while ensuring safety and authenticity. The Framework of Hiding: Ruth explains her four types of “hiders”, breaking down the different ways we hide, and why we do soPsychological Safety: We break down the importance of fostering environments where authenticity thrives and human connections deepen.Mentioned in this episode:  The Big Leap Ruth Rathblott is a TedX and keynote speaker, DEI consultant and best selling author and advocate.  Her work is both deeply personal and also universal.  Born with a limb difference, Ruth learned to hide in high school and continued to do so for 25 years, until realizing the true cost of “fitting in” instead of genuinely belonging.  Ruth and I both have a Masters Degree in social work, love margaritas and Mexican food and travel and share the belief that diversity and inclusivity enriches all of our lives. Want to connect with Ruth Rathblott?Website  - LinkedIn - Instagram - Ruth’s TedX Talk - Ruth’s New Book Ruth’s First Interview with meYou might love ADHD-ish, but did you know I also have two private podcasts? A private podcast is one of the best brand assets I know of for promoting your business and serving your clients, and the best time to launch one is NOW, with Hello Audio’s Black Friday Sale pricing. Click here to use my affiliate link by Wednesday December 4th and get 40% your first year. Know you want a private podcast, but don’t know where to start? If you are feeling a bit “off”, upset, depressed or easily triggered, this episode is for you. Most of the advice we hear on managing ADHD traits is about disorganization and distractibility, but emotional dysregulation is also part of ADHD and can really impact us in both our personal and professional lives. It’s OK to not be OK right now. Welcome to a panel episode of ADHD-ish, where I am joined by fellow business coaches Justine Clay, and Stephanie Wasylyk, who also work with creatives, entrepreneurs and small business owners that identify with ADHD.  The three of us met in Meg Casebolt’s SEO membership community, The Content Love Lab. In this lively and insightful conversation, we explore how ADHD can shape who we are without solely defining us, and offer valuable strategies for creating inclusive, ADHD-friendly environments, both personally and professionally. Experimentation, flexibility, the right level of structure and understanding there is not only no one size fits all tools for neurotypicals, there aren’t for those with ADHD tendencies either.  Finding the right strategies and the right coach means honoring what works for you, not fitting into someone's cookie-cutter program.   Episode Highlights:🏡 Creating ADHD-Friendly Spaces: Stephanie highlights the importance of inclusive environments that cater to diverse learning styles. She shares her experiences in making her coaching practices welcoming for everyone, regardless of neurodivergence. I suggested that Justine, Stephanie and other inclusivity champions are "ADHD enthusiasts."🎨 Inclusive Coaching Strategies: Justine shares her evolution in ADHD coaching, from niche marketing to a more encompassing approach that considers clients' preferred learning and processing styles. Hey, ADHD-ish fam! 🚀 Have you ever wondered why some neurodivergent business owners just seem to get so much done and others have a permanent seat on the struggle bus?  Is it medication, meditation or exercise?   Is it their morning routine or have they simply found the perfect productivity strategy that continues to escape you? In honor of ADHD Awareness Month,  I’m sharing a game-changing strategy that has the power to lift your mood, energize your day, and keep you on track – introducing the Dopamine Menu! 🧠✨First introduced by YouTuber Jessica Mc Cabe of “How to ADHD” and Eric Tivers of ADHD Rewired, the Dopamine Menu (or dopamenu for those who love shortcuts…)  is a simple but wickedly effective tool for meeting our brain’s need for stimulation and reminding us where to get it, without getting ourselves into trouble.  Dividing the things that stimulate our brains and give us a squirt of joy juice (dopamine) into easy to remember categories that resemble a restaurant menu - starters,  mains, sides and desserts keeps the Dopamine Menu feeling playful and fun, so we will actually take advantage of it.  The dopamine menu is to the ADHD-ish brain what meal planning and prep is to those who want to eat a healthier diet, but just can’t seem to break free from snack foods.  The best part about having a Dopamine Menu is that you don’t have to follow it perfectly and you can change it up whenever you want, so it stays shiny and new. 🎙️ What You'll Learn:The truth about stimulant medication and moodHow dopamine effects mood, energy and motivation A step-by-step guide to create your own Dopamine MenuTips for making your Dopamine Menu convenient, effective, and sustainableSuggestions for using your Dopamine Menu for dealing with procrastination, impulsivity and losing the day to social media Create a dopamine menu and post it on social media to get my feedback & I’ll shout YOU out on a future episode:  Instagram: @coachdiannwingert   -   LinkedIn: Diann Wingert CoachingListener Shout Out:  This week's shout out goes to long time listener, Andrea Sousa, a paralegal and law student who shared how her ADHD traits of curiosity and hyperfocus help her excel at locating difficult to find names and addresses, to the amazement of everyone in her office. Hey Boss and welcome to another insightful episode of ADHD-ish! I'm your host, Diann Wingert,  and I’m joined by my new biz bestie, Bri Seeley, who opens up about her late realization of ADHD traits just six months ago. Bri's relationship with her fiancé and the challenges of sharing a work-from-home lifestyle with a neurotypical fiance, after 17 years of entrepreneurship prompted her to question her brain’s functioning. This led her to "Scattered Minds" by Gabor Maté, which illuminated her experiences and led to a deeper understanding of her unique cognitive processes. 🧠 Bri Seeley shares her experience of coming to terms with her ADHD traits over the past six months in her early 40s and how it's reshaped her approach to work and life. If you tend to procrastinate on important but not urgent tasks (or those that your brain finds tedious), you are not alone.  Some tasks, like tax preparation and folding laundry, are nearly universal in triggering resistance, so it’s time to embrace strategies that allow us to get sh*t done, without shame. The popularity of body-doubling (also called virtual co-working) is partially due to the growth of remote work, but mostly due to the need for non-judgmental accountability.  After sampling several body doubling platforms, I decided to partner with Focused Space, an innovative company that combines body doubling with mindfulness practices and a virtual community.    In this episode of ADHD-ish, I am joined by Focused Space’s Becca Groner.  With a background in improv comedy and a deep understanding of ADHD tendencies, she brings a human-centered approach to productivity and teamwork, which you will experience in our conversation. By emphasizing community, flexible accountability, and personal well-being, platforms like Focused Space are paving the way for a more connected and productive future for individuals and teams. Fun Fact: Several members of the Focused Space community were able to finish writing books during their virtual coworking sessions. 📚✨Be sure to listen until the end for a special partnership announcement offering listeners a free month of Focused Space, and valuable resources like the Procrastination Playbook. So grab your headphones, and let's get started on creating a more joyful, connected, and productive work environment. Find Becca on Linked InMentioned by our guest: Third Coast Comedy ClubUnscripted Improv for AnxietyThe Procrastination Playbook Pomodoro Technique Give body-doubling + community a try: Use this special ADHD-ish/Focused Space partnership offer: Get one month free + 25% discount after that! https://bit.ly/3X2DvOJ
