The controversy surrounding World War II has escalated significantly due to the recent disclosure of previously classified stories from that era. Throughout history, governments have consistently demonstrated a tendency to downplay or ignore certain sensitive matters. Instead, these events are focused on highlighting and celebrating specific anniversaries. It seems that they selectively prioritize certain aspects while disregarding others. Some historians and research institutes have not devoted sufficient attention to the most horrifying aspects of the war and the Japanese occupation. The primary focus has been on the revolutions of 1896 and 1898, as well as the subsequent Philippine-American war.So, join me on this journey to check out what our fellow countrymen went through in the Philippines during World War II, specifically the Battle of Manila.Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*Asian Stalingrad - The Battle of Manila 1945 (Mark Felton Productions YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! In the Philippines, the only cult leader that I know of is Apollo Quiboloy. And I know this is a bit argumentative, but in my opinion, however you want to put it, the church that he founded was basically a cult. So imagine my surprise when I heard about this cult that's been blowing up on social media lately. It's all happening in Surigao del Norte, Philippines. So, what is it about? Is it really a cult? And who's behind it? Well, join me as I delve into the details that I've found so far about the Socorro Bayanihan cult.Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*Victims testify against alleged Socorro cult at Senate hearing | The Final Word (CNN Philippines YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! It was a big deal that shook up the whole country. They totally reveal some shady stuff about trying to fake election results. Also, as I navigate through this crazy political maze, I'll break down what election fraud is and take a closer look at its sneaky tactics. Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*05 More than 1M (Jim Sarthou YouTube Channel)*House speaker Arroyo, mahaba at masalimuot ang naging takbo ng political career (GMA Integrated News YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! So, how much do you actually know about the not-so-great or, let me just say, the darker parts of Philippine history? Get ready to be freaked out as I dig into the shocking Maguindanao Massacre of 2009 and all the major consequences that went down because of it. This episode also talks about how cronyism works in the Philippines and how it can lead to these unspeakable crimes, like this massacre, by getting into all the power dynamics going on behind the scenes.Throughout this episode, we're going to dive into the whole political scene in Maguindanao province, the place where the Ampatuan clan has been calling the shots since 2001. It's going to be interesting, trust me. I also discuss the awful incidents surrounding Ismael "Toto" Mangudadatu and Datu Andal "Unsay" Ampatuan Jr. You won't believe the crazy stuff that went down with Mangudadatu! He had this totally heroic political career where he tried to take on the Ampatuans with no fear at all. But let me tell you, things got really tragic real quick after that. Tensions were through the roof, I'm telling you. Lastly,  I talk about how hard it is to get justice by talking about the Ampatuan family's arrest and trial. Get a sense of the pain and anger of the victims' families as I also talk about their 10-year fight for justice. And on the 13th anniversary of the tragic massacre, I take a moment to reflect and emphasize the challenges faced in seeking justice in the Philippines.Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*Maguindanao massacre: The children it left behind (CNN Philippines YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! It's been almost ten years since the multi-billion-peso pork barrel scam got exposed, and thousands of people hit the streets to protest. But you know what? That whole mess still ain't settled. There's this Filipino businesswoman named Janet Lim-Napoles, and she's been scheming this pork barrel scam for like a whole decade, using a bunch of made-up NGOs and all that.In July 2013, there was this big news about a scam where lawmakers were trying to send a whopping P10 billion from their Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) to fake projects just so they could get some massive bribes. It was all over the news! But the question now is this: where are we now with this infamous scam? Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*Corruption, collusion in pork barrel scam (Rappler YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! In the Philippines, karaoke is practically a religion, and there's probably around ten karaoke bars in every barrio that stay open all night till dawn. Most of us Filipinos are pretty good at singing. It's something we really love to do.But you know what's the worst thing a Filipino can do? SING OFF KEY. We can totally tell when music is good; there is no doubt about it. So singing off-key seems to be this totally unforgivable crime. It's like someone should straight-up die for it. Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*Mark Joseph Bande YouTube ChannelSupport the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! The unimaginable happened in the Philippines' 2022 presidential election, which had been anticipated for a long time: Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., succeeded the controversial Rodrigo Duterte as president.Given that Marcos Sr., his father, held power for a duration of 21 years, which including a period of 14 years under martial law, the Philippines is finally getting a taste of real democracy for the first time ever! But those who lived through martial law were not having it. The dictatorship of his father was absolutely terrible, while his mother was famous for her massive shoe collection. They straight up didn't want to accept Bongbong as president and refused to acknowledge its legitimacy. So how did Bongbong, or 64-year-old Ferdinand Marcos Jr., become the frontrunner in the Philippines' presidential election on May 9? Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*FULL SPEECH: President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. inaugural address (Manila Bulletin Online YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! Rodrigo Duterte, then 71 years old, defeated four other candidates to become president of the Philippines on May 10, 2016. He received 39% of the vote. He was this super captivating speaker who didn't hold back at all and sometimes even dropped some swear words. As mayor of Davao, the biggest city in Mindanao, he also excelled. He was this really tough and effective commander who cared more about keeping things in order and didn't waste time worrying about the constitutional rights of suspected criminals. However, in 2018 alone, around 12,000 Filipinos lost their lives because of his whole "war on drugs" thing. Despite this, he's still really popular in the Philippines. He's got fans of all ages, backgrounds, and social statuses, and his popularity has always been around 50%.And, given his poor and problematic background with human rights, the issue today is: how is this even possible?Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*Rodrigo Duterte on drugs, death and diplomacy | Talk to AI Jazeera (AI Jazeera English YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! Noynoy Aquino was in charge for six years, from 2010 to 2016. And let me tell you, the Philippine economy was on the up and up during that time. But he also had to deal with some accusations of elitism, being all high and mighty. His administration also dropped the ball by making people feel left out, like they weren't part of the "cool kids' club." It created this whole exclusive vibe that was just not okay with the majority of the Filipinos. This lack of transparency gave critics a voice: some people think Noynoy did a good job in trying to modernize the economy and fight corruption, but others say he could've done more.Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*http://rtvm.gov.ph - Inauguration Of President Benigno S. After EDSA, the "Hello, Garci" controversy might be the longest and most scandalous presidency. The recording was made public a full year after the 2004 elections. In it, Arroyo asks Virgilio Garcillano, who was the Election Commissioner at the time, if she will still be in the lead by more than a million votes. She had to beat Fernando Poe Jr. if she wanted to get a million votes. Arroyo apologized for her "lapse in judgment" in a well-scripted broadcast "I am sorry" address prepared by the Malacañang, although she did not accept wrongdoing. Was that, however, enough to win back the confidence of the Filipino people in her? Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bites:*05 More than 1M (Jim Sarthou YouTube Channel)*House speaker Arroyo, mahaba at masalimuot ang naging takbo ng political career (GMA Integrated News YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! From 1998 to 2001, President Joseph Estrada was in charge, and Vice President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo worked for him. She was the first woman to take that job, which made history. Even though the country was in a mess because of the political and economic crisis and other important problems, Estrada left Arroyo. Because of this, it was hard for her to gain the trust of the Filipino people and the investors. Also, she had to make more money to improve the quality of life in the Philippines. Basically, Arroyo was trying to help the Filipinos bounce back and get back on track. However, during her first term as president, there was this group of insurgents that totally caused her a ton of distress and messed up her ability to go after her goals, turning her life into a constant nightmare.Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*WRAP Evacuations from complex, army and rebel bites, Arroyo deadline (AP Archive YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! The Estrada government has always had a bad reputation for being corrupt, favoring family and friends, fighting between themselves in politics, failing to achieve their stated aims, and so on and so forth. Although they claimed Estrada would help the poor, they did little to implement the government program and actually make a difference in people's lives. It's too bad that Estrada won't be recognized as the president who did the most for the poor, but as the first Philippine leader to be impeached and removed from office.Music:*Dark Woods by Colorfilm Music*24hr News by O2 StudioSound Bite:*PHILIPPINES: ESTRADA IMPEACHMENT TRIAL BEGINS (AP Archive YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! After the historic term of Corazon Aquino, Fidel V. Ramos served as president of the Philippines from 1992 to 1997 and played a crucial role in the revolution that overthrew the Marcos regime. Once considered a cruel Marcos supporter, Ramos was hailed as a national hero and ushered in a period of economic prosperity after he abandoned the dictator. There are, however, unanswered questions, such as whether or not it is true that Ramos was involved in the horrific tortures that occurred under Martial Law. For a lot of people, the election of Corazon "Cory" Aquino meant more than just Marcos losing power. It was like democracy winning over dictatorship. Cory never even thought herself that she would end up running the country.  And yes, she definitely had her flaws as president, but we also can't deny that she was one of the many people who came together to fight against the Marcos administration. But given all the trouble that happened during Cory's presidency, how are we to make sense of the role she played in bringing democracy back to our country?Music:*24hr News by O2 Studio*Dark Woods by Colorfilm MusicSound Bite:*President Corazon Aquino - First 100 Days Interview | June 1986(DemokrasyaTV YouTube Channel)Support the showGet a shout-out in an upcoming episode! From 1972 to 1981, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. imposed martial law on the Philippines. The period of martial law was a really dark time for our country, and most Filipinos can attest to that. There are even some stories going around that say martial law was this time when the government was all up in people's business, like harassing and torturing them. But there are also many who claim things went smoothly, citing improvements like less crime and increased discipline. Here's the thing: Marcos actually did some stuff that made the Philippines better, no doubt about it. But the truth is, a lot of Filipinos are still stuck, wondering if martial law was a smart move or a total disaster.
