On todays show – a conversation with Maya Wind, a scholar of Israeli expertise and militarism. Her new book is Towers of Ivory & Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom. As this book shows, Israeli universities serve as pillars of Israel’s system of oppression against Palestinians. Towers of Ivory and Steel is a powerful exposé of Israeli academia’s ongoing and active complicity in Israel’s settler-colonial project. Law Enforcement in this country kills approximately 1,200 people every single year and yet the names of many are never said or known except to their families and friends. What’s more, law enforcement agencies and other state actors harm our community in a myriad of ways that also go unnoticed like profiling, sexually assaulting and wrongfully incarcerating our people. If we don’t know its happening – then we can’t fight back. We cant adequately organize a response. So, every week on Law & Disorder we do a round up of news related to state violence. We hope this segment will serve to expose, agitate and build. This is the State Terror Round Up for the week of April 15th, 2024. —- This episode featured music by Kofy Brown. On today’s show we’re in conversation with the editors of a book that explores county jails as a key in the broader abolitionist movement, both in building analysis and in building our fight. Jails are now the fastest-growing sector of the US carceral state. As jails grow, they transform the areas around them. If jails are everywhere, resistance is too. The book is called The Jail is Everywhere: Fighting the New Geography of Mass Incarceration, and our guests are editors Jack Norton and Judah Schept. The mission of law & disorder is to expose, agitate and build a new world where all of us can thrive. But how do we get there? How do we build a world many of us have only seen in our dreams? That’s where we believe the artists come in. So, each week we feature an artist, holding down a weekly residency with us, helping us to imagine a different, more liberated world. This week’s Resistance in Residence Artist is award winning and multi-nominated, Los Angeles-based actress, playwright and author, Robin Riker. — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Resistance in Residence Artist: Robin Riker appeared first on KPFA.
The Playwrights Foundation 46th Playwrights Festival is beginning at the Magic Theater at the Fort Mason in San Francisco, from April 12th to April 21st. The centerpiece of the festival are readings from four resident playwrights with the Playwrights Foundation along with workshops, parties and a meet and greet as well as a bit of reading with the new Playwrights Foundation Resident Playwright Cohort – which includes our host Cat Brooks. Joining us to discuss are Jason Tseng, a queer, non-binary Chinese-American playwright with roots in New York City and Washington D.C. Also joining us is Aidaa Peerzada, a writer and performer whose background as the descendant of two artists from different cultural traditions – an African American and First Generation American Pakistani – is at the heart of her artistic practice. Baltimore is planning a $1bn jail construction project, the most expensive state-funded project in Maryland ever. They’re using a consent decree for terrible jail conditions as justification for building a “better” jail. We’re joined by David Fathi, the Director of the American Civil Liberties Union National Prison Project, which brings challenges to conditions of confinement in prisons, jails, and other detention facilities, and works to end the policies that have given the United States the highest incarceration rate in the world. David is also involved in a more-than 30-year old lawsuit about conditions in Baltimore jails called Duvall v Hogan which is being problematically used to justify the new $1 billion jail construction plan. — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Baltimore Plans $1Bn Jail Construction w/ David Fathi appeared first on KPFA.

On today’s episode, we’ll be in conversation with the author of one of the most anticipated books of the year. The book is called There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension, and it’s a poetic love letter to basketball; also to being rooted in Columbus Ohio, where the author has lived most of his life, and to the idea and experience of enemies. It’s written by MacArthur Genius Hanif Abdurraqib, who is a poet, writer, music and cultural critic, as well as a sneakerhead and a dog parent. We talk about Hanif’s new book, which uses basketball as a vehicle for engaging the nuances of social life, from pride in a team city and following dreams that can be just out of reach, to a relationship with urban abandonment, police violence, jails, and rebellion, all alongside nuances of love and grief. We also talk about Israel’s genocide in Gaza as well as the sacrifices of Ramadan. Hanif Abdurraqib will be appearing in San Francisco on his book tour for an event co-sponsored by SF City Arts and Lectures as well as Marcus Books on April 3rd at 7:30pm at they Sydney Goldstein Theater. According to a recent investigation by the New Jersey Office of the State Comptroller, law enforcement officers being trained by the for-profit training company Street Cop were “taught unconstitutional policing tactics, glorified violence, denigrated women and minorities, and likely violated a myriad of state laws and policies.” Street Cop does business with law enforcement agencies in 46 different states. Shirley LaVarco, an attorney at Civil Rights Corps joins us to unpack the failures of police training, especially in the unregulated environment in which these private companies operate. Her analysis, laid out in The Appeal, argues that more police training will not make people safer, reducing unnecessary police encounters will. LaVarco writes “While banning pretextual traffic stops won’t fully transform the culture of racism and misogyny permeating American policing, it is a common-sense first step.” Read LaVarco’s piece in The Appeal: https://theappeal.org/police-training-violent-racist-ban-pretextual-traffic-stops/ The RISE Houston campaign seeks to end pretexutal stops, end the city’s contract with ineffective surveillance technology like Shotspotter, freeze police spending and invest in evidence-based solutions that actually make communities safer.
