 Original audio download link “The UNCTAD Commodities Branch has recently produced a report on industrial hemp that will provide the background material for a forum on the ecological properties and economic potential of this commodity. National experiences will also be shared on the development of an industrial hemp value chain.Industrial hemp does not have intoxicating properties. Nonetheless, it remains a controversial plant, as it is often mistakenly associated with use as an intoxicant. The report discusses the general uses of industrial hemp, and how they are reflected in international production and trade statistics. Based on current experiences and empirical expertise, the report also defines the steps that could be taken by developing countries where climate and agronomic characteristics are favourable to cultivate the crop in order to exploit its economic and social potential. The report provides some information about production worldwide and trade of industrial hemp products. Overall, about 40 countries currently produce some significant quantities of industrial hemp. However, due to a narrow set of hemp products covered by international trade statistics, recorded trade flows do not fully reflect the true size of the global industrial hemp market. Indeed, despite an estimated overall value of about $5 billion in 2020, trade in such products, as reported in international trade datasets, amounted to a mere US42 million. Thus, a clear effort is urgently needed to include a more representative set of hemp-related products in international product classifications. Information about prices of hemp products is also scarce. Currently available sources of information are scattered and are not easily comparable. However, some patterns emerge within the sector. Important price differences exist between raw, semi-processed hemp, hemp yarn and more sophisticated derivative products. To fully exploit the potential of industrial hemp, countries would need to take specific actions. For instance, a clarification of the legal status of hemp as distinct from intoxicant cannabis substances could be the first step taken by governments. A precise understanding of production constraints imposed by regulatory frameworks in destination markets would also be necessary to identify market potential. Sarah Stephens, CEO, of Midwest Hemp Technology, (MHT), joins us with Sales Manager, Jenifer Holmes, for a full report on the steadily growing hemp industry in Kansas. MHT is a hemp processing company manufacturing hemp fiber and grain crops serving Kansas and midwestern USA farmers. The facility is located in Augusta on four acres and is currently focused on hemp (grain) seed food, the company is currently able to sell hemp oil for cooking, hemp seed protein powder, and the hurd mix that can be used to create ‘hemp lime’, a sustainable building insulation alternative.Although the hemp plant can be used for several different enthings such as bioplastics, textiles for clothing, food for humans and livestock, mulch for the garden, hempcrete and much more, Stephens wants the community to know that it is not being utilized for the growth of cannabinoid or CBD-related products. ‘These are outdoor crops. When you grow for CBD, usually, you’re probably inside or in a hoop house with all female only plants that will produce flowers and that’s where the cannabinoid production is,’ said Sarah Stephens, CEO of Midwest Hemp Technology. ‘These plants are male and female, directly sowed into the ground and harvested with a combine. There’s nothing to smoke on it. Someday we hope it’s grown like wheat.’During MHT’s open house on Thursday, Nov. 3, the crew was offering hemp product samples like cookies and muffins made with hemp seeds, popcorn popped with hemp oil and a chance for the community to ask questions.‘It’s a high-protein, high-fiber and high in omega’s seed. What we’re doing is breaking the seed into oil and protein powder. Joseph Hickey’s long history in the hemp industry started in 1992 with his discovery of the 1942 articles of incorporation for the long dormant Kentucky Hemp Growers Cooperative.  He renewed the charter and became its founder and Executive Director in 1994. That same year, after a meeting with Mr. Hickey, Kentucky Governor Brereton Jones established the Kentucky Hemp Task Force to research hemp’s economic opportunities for rural farmers. Mr. Hickey and actor/activist Woody Harrelson established Tierra Madre in 1995, focused on creating sustainable environmental solutions, and in 1996 orchestrated Woody’s hemp planting arrest, jury trial and eventual acquittal, an incident that brought national attention to the hemp issue. Hickey organized the world’s first International Hemp Conference in 1996, and in 1998, along with The Body Shop founder, Anita Roddick, he launched Kenex Ltd., Canada’s first hemp seed and fiber processing company. Inherent in this process of healing the planet, he says, is reducing burning of fossil fuels and turning to plants, such as hemp, as the new source of plastics. Massive cannabis farming also produces much oxygen.Cannabis can make the world go around in many ways, he says. Industrial hemp can be a multibillion-dollar industry, can produce a plant-based fuel, and can help sequester carbon by fully replacing fossil fuels.“It’s the illogical social prejudice against a plant in a society that feels it’s okay to burn fossil fuels, knowing they are Gaia-cidal (earth-killing), but still continues to do it.
