Bio:  Dr. Ard is professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention in the Division of Public Health Sciences, co-director of the Weight Management Center and medical director of medical weight management at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. He is also the current President of The Obesity Society.  In October 2021, Dr. Ard was elected as a member to the National Academy of Medicine. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.  Dr. Ard conducts research in clinical strategies to treat obesity and associated risk-factor modification. He also focuses on health disparities and ways to better engage African Americans in effective obesity treatment and research programs. He is a graduate of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, where he earned his medical degree. She graduated college from the University of Texas at Austin. She completed her Master’s of Science in Exercise Physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder and her medical degree at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. This week, host Karli Burridge speaks with her colleague, Dr. Anthony Auriemma, about how Dr. Auriemma has grown the obesity medicine program at Ascension to 10 locations in the Chicagoland area, as well as about the launch of the Illinois Obesity Society, and how it has grown to one of the biggest and most active State obesity organizations in the country. Dr. Auriemma taps into his JD degree, as he summarizes the steps that organizations must take to successfully start a non-profit, and provides tips and pearls on growing an organization. Dr. Anthony Auriemma graduated Cum Laude from Hope College before receiving his Doctor of Medicine Degree at Loyola University, Chicago. He also earned a Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School where he graduated Cum Laude. As you can tell, he’s a real slacker. Dr. Auriemma completed his residency in Family Medicine at Hinsdale Hospital where he served as Chief Resident. He is Board Certified in both Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine, and serves as Medical Director for Ascension Weight Loss Solutions, which is where I work with him clinically. In this week's episode, host Karli Burridge speaks with fellow obesity specialist PA, Ledyi Ballesteros, about how Ledyi's own struggles with her weight led her to the field of obesity medicine, and how she has developed the obesity program at Gonzaba Medical Group, a multispecialty clinic in San Antonio TX, which serves a primarily low-income, elderly, Hispanic population. Ledyi explains how she developed the obesity program, and how she is able to help her patients using culturally sensitive, economic, patient and family-centered approaches. Ledyenska “Ledyi” Baez Ballesteros, MPAS, PA-C Ledyi—a bilingual provider treating patients who speak Spanish and English—began working in internal medicine and urgent care at Gonzaba Medical Group (GMG) in San Antonio, Texas in 2011. She founded the obesity medicine program at GMG in 2015 after gaining around 100 pounds after complications with her first pregnancy in 2014. Ledyi, who now has two kids, subsequently embarked on her own weight loss journey the following year, and her patients began to ask her about it. The resulting pilot program started with an estimated 60 patients. Today, she runs the obesity medicine program at GMG with nearly 700 patients, 75% of whom are Hispanic. Ledyi completed AAPA’s Obesity Management in Primary Care Training & Certificate Program in 2018 and earned the Certificate of Advanced Education in Obesity Management for NPs and PAs from the Obesity Medicine Association in 2020. For the past 2 years, she has served as the the Secretary of PAs in Obesity Medicine, and she has been instrumental in helping PAOM become an official caucus of the AAPA. Ledyi has presented on the topic of obesity to members of AAPA, the Association of PAs and NPs, Bexar County Society of PAs, the Society of Army PAs, and the Texas Association of PAs. Dr. Ziemke has nearly two decades of clinical and research experience in the field of Obesity & Nutrition Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency, clinical nutrition fellowship, and clinical research, in Boston, MA. She has worked at top national centers such as Boston Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with affiliations at Boston University, Tufts Medical School, and Harvard Medical School. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and a diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She serves on the Network Advisory Committee of The Obesity Society, Editorial Board of Obesity Pillars, and is a Scientific Medical Associate for Obesity Matters. She lives in Jupiter, FL with her husband and two children. Breaking News: The FDA approved Eli Lilly’s drug, tirzepatide, for the treatment of obesity! The name for this drug is  Zepbound™ and it is, the first and only obesity treatment of its kind that activates both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) hormone receptors. Zepbound, like all other AOMs,  is indicated for adults with obesity (with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater), or those who are overweight/ preobesity  (with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater) and also have weight-related complications.In this episode, Karli reviews the news release and discusses things like, when Zepbound is expected to be available, pricing, and the studies that lead to its FDA appoval. They discuss the bi-directional relationship between obesity and mental health disorders, trauma-informed care, the importance of shared decision making and patient-centered care, managing weight-promoting anti-depressant and anti-psychotic medications, diagnosing and managing eating disorders in patients with obesity, and important take-aways for effectively managing patients who are affected by mental health disorders, eating disorders, and obesity. Dr. Iqbal is a board-certified physician and specializes in treating patients with both medical and psychiatric illness. She received her medical degree from Northeast Ohio medical university in Rootstown, OH and went on to do a dua residency in Family Medicine and psychiatry at university Hospital/ case Western Reserve University in Cleveland OH. She then completed her fellowship in consult-liaison psychiatry at northwestern university in Chicago IL. She has practiced as an adult psychiatrist at Hinsdale behavioral health in Hinsdale IL for the past 13 years. Ms. Wenz has been an active member of the Obesity Medicine Association since 2017, and currently serves on the CME and Medical Surgical Committees. She has dedicated her career to providing compassionate, evidence-based treatment to help patients manage their weight and improve their health. She also serves as a mentor and educator to nurse practitioners, physician associates and physicians interested in learning more about treating obesity.
