This is Pat and my first podcast episode where we are releasing on both audio and video platforms! This one is a rambler :) We talk about what we've both been up to during our summer break, and a lot about Pickleball, wine, self-confidence (or the lack thereof in musicians), and a bunch of other randomness. Support the Trad-Not-Trad Podcast:https://www.buzzsprout.com/2065362/supportOur Webpage:https://tradnottrad.buzzsprout.com/Email us!tradnottrad@gmail.comFind Matt at:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@heyitsmattbellFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MattBellOnDrums/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heyitsmattbell/Find Pat at:Website: https://patbroaders.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PatBroadersMusicInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/piperpat/?hl=enSupport the show

It’s hard to think of an artist in traditional Irish music more influential than Seamus Egan. From his beginnings as a teen prodigy, to his groundbreaking solo work with Shanachie Records, to his founding of Irish-American powerhouse band Solas, to his current work as one of the leading composers and interpreters of the tradition, Egan has inspired multiple generations of musicians and helped define the sound of Irish music today. As a multi-instrumentalist, he’s put his mark on the sound of the Irish flute, tenor banjo, guitar, mandolin, tin whistle, and low whistle, among others. As a composer, he was behind the soundtrack for the award-winning film The Brothers McMullen, co-wrote Sarah McLachlan’s breakout hit, “Weep Not for the Memories,” and has scored numerous documentaries and indie films since. As a bandleader, Solas has been the pre-eminent Irish-American band of their generation for the past 20 years, continuously renewing  Irish music with fresh ideas, including a collaboration with Rhiannon Giddens on their 2015 album. As a performer, few others can make so many instruments or such wickedly complex ornaments seem so effortless. Music comes as naturally to Seamus Egan as breath, but his mastery of the tradition is only one facet of his plans to move the music forward.  In 2018, Seamus Egan began touring as a solo performer, bringing along friends and musical guests, and making music as Seamus Egan Project that points towards the origins of Solas in the 1990s. Originally a band of friends who gathered to enjoy the late night craic of the Irish sessions in Philadelphia and New York, Solas was able to meld the breakneck speed and fun of these late night jams with a more sensitive feel for complex arrangements and composition that came from Egan’s love of other music genres like jazz, classical, bluegrass or rock. Revisiting this period in his music, focusing on the three solo albums he cut before Solas, Egan’s looking back to that initial burst of creativity that followed the breathtaking four All-Ireland Championships he won on four different instruments by the young age of 14 and his turns as a star soloist in his later teens with Mick Moloney’s The Green Fields of America.  Find Seamus Here:Website: https://seamuseganproject.com/homeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/seamus_egan_project/?hl=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/seamuseganproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/seamuseganprojectSupport the Trad-Not-Trad Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2065362/support Our Webpage: https://tradnottrad.buzzsprout.com/Email us!tradnottrad@gmail.com Find Matt at: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@heyitsmattbell Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MattBellOnDrums/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heyitsmattbell/ Find Pat at: Website: https://patbroaders.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PatBroadersMusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/piperpat/?hl=enSupport the show

Name many of the most notable recordings and/or performers in Irish music and it's a fair bet that John Doyle had something to do with them.  Liz Carroll; Eileen Ivers; Karan Casey; Solas; Michael Black; Mary Black; the trio of McCusker, McGoldrick and Doyle; The Teetotalers (Martin Hayes, Kevin Crawford, John Doyle); and now Usher's Island (Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny, Mike McGoldrick, Paddy Glackin and John Doyle) - a vertible who's who of the greatest names in Irish music.  These are just a very few of the stellar artists for whom John Doyle's signature guitar sound, singing or songwriting is essential.   From a musical family in Dublin, John’s influences include well known English folk singers Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson, and The Watersons; Scottish singers Dick Gaughan and John Martin; and fellow Irishmen Paul Brady and Al O’Donnell as well as his father, Sean Doyle - probably the biggest influence of all. John went on the road as a pro at 16 with the group Chanting House which he formed with Susan McKeown and which eventually included such great players as Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, & Donogh Hennessy.  John went on to form the highly acclaimed super group, Solas, with Seamus Egan, John Williams, Karan Casey and Winifred Horan which took the folk and Celtic music worlds by storm, in no small part due to John’s powerhouse rhythmic guitar style and innovative arrangements. As a member of Solas, John performed to sold out audiences nationally and internationally as well as appearing on many national TV and radio programs: NBC’s The Today Show, various programs for National Public Radio and Public Radio International, A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, E-Town and World Cafe as part of that critically acclaimed group, he also received three NAIRD awards and a Grammy nomination for the band’s self-titled first recording. After leaving Solas, John has gone on to perform and tour with other greats in the Folk, Celtic and Bluegrass worlds - as music director for folk icon Joan Baez, guitarist for Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eileen Ivers, Tim O’Brien (John was included on Tim’s 2006 Grammy-award winning CD, Fiddler’s Green), Linda Thompson, Kate Rusby, Cathie Ryan, Cherish the Ladies, and many others. He has appeared on soundtracks for the feature film, The Brothers McMullan, Soldier, PBS’s Out of Ireland and also composed the music for the film Uncle Robert’s Footsteps and the play Down the Flats as well as performing on countless recordings as guitarist and/or singer for other notable artists such as Kate Rusby, Linda Thompson, Tim O’Brien, Alison Brown, Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, Mick Moloney, Cathal McConnell, Karan Casey and so many others.  Find John at: https://www.johndoylemusic.com/Support the Trad-Not-Trad Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2065362/supportOur Webpage:https://tradnottrad.buzzsprout.com/Email us!tradnottrad@gmail.com  Find Matt at: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/mattbellondrumsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MattBellOnDrums/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattbellondrums/Find Pat at:Website: https://patbroaders.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PatBroadersMusicInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/piperpat/?hl=enSupport the show
