Mark Ludwig is the founder and Executive Director of Americans For Equal Shared Parenting (AFESP). Mark helps coordinate the legislative efforts in all 50 states regarding shared parenting legislation, enabling children to have equal parenting time with their fathers and mothers, and to prevent parental alienation.In this episode I interview Mark and he shares the background of his story and how his experience led him to advocate for equal shared parenting. Today we are discussing the topic of Parental Alienation and its harmful effects on both children and parents alike. Today is April 25th, which is designated as National Parental Alienation Awareness Day in the U.S. Today it’s our goal to raise awareness through the story of one parent’s real-time struggle against parental alienation. My special guest today is AuBrey Erickson. AuBrey is a loving, caring and fit mother of 8 amazing children (that’s right, EIGHT children), and she’s been fighting a daily battle in family court after she had all contact severed between her and all of her 8 children. She daily experiences parental alienation. She has agreed to sit down with me today, on National Parental Alienation Awareness Day, to share her own personal experiences and perspectives that are part of her daily battle against parental alienation. Her story is becoming the next voice for public awareness.For those of you who may be hearing the term “parental alienation” for the first time, let’s define the term:Parental alienation occurs when a child refuses to have a relationship with one parent due to manipulations by the other parent, such as the conveying of exaggerated and false information. It most often arises during and after divorce or custody battles between parents, but it can also happen in intact families as well. Parental Alienation is made up of behaviors from vindictive disgruntled spouses, ex-spouses, or significant others aimed at intentionally and maliciously breaking the mental and emotional bond between the targeted parent and the child. The child becomes, basically, ERASED from the life of the targeted parent.Unfortunately, perfectly fit, loving, and caring parents are erased from the lives of their children each and every day. Over 22 million adults are currently targets of parental alienation in the United States. An estimated 10 million of those adults have experienced what they perceive to be severe alienation from their children. Today’s topic can be described in many different terms. The most common term is “bad talking”. This has to do with the way that one parent speaks about the other parent to the child(ren). It’s typical for there to be a certain level of animosity and conflict between separating and divorcing parents. And while we can agree that when kids get in the middle of that conflict, they should be protected from “bad talking” that comes from either parent, what we cannot agree on is exactly how to define and interpret “bad talk” or “non-laudatory terms”.
