Have you ever witnessed a child's tenacity when learning to walk, the unrelenting trial and error? That same resilience is the heart of our latest episode, where Monique Peters and I explore the challenges of auditory processing disorder. Monique opens up about her son's challenging journey, from the onset of a stutter to facing educational hurdles and being bullied.Through their story, we reveal the light that shines at the end of the tunnel for parents and individuals confronting similar hurdles, as interventions like speech therapy and dietary adjustments pave the way to understanding and growth. When Monique learned about the latest brain research from the book The Brain That Changes Itself  by Dr Norman Doidge, suddenly her son's learning challenges made sense. He did an online program called Fast ForWord® mentioned in the book, and she was pleasantly surprised at the improvements in his speech and communication.  She soon found herself working with a Sydney based speech pathologist, supporting parents who had also bought the program.  Here she learned a lot about auditory processing disorder (APD), the role it plays in learning challenges,  and how neuroscience technology can help.In our discussion, we discuss the human brain and neuroplasticity. Explaining neural pathways, illustrating how the interplay of nature and nurture sculpts our cognitive abilities. From the inspiring tales of survival by our elders to the impact of consistent brain challenges on language skills, I share anecdotes and expert insights that weave together the concept of a growth mindset and the resilience passed down through generations. About Monique Peters:Since 2018 Monique has been serving clients all over Australia, trademarking her Learnerobics® program in 2022. She is continually learning more about business, neuroscience and the growth mindset. Last year, she become one of Dr Daniel Amen's Licensed Brain Health Trainers.   As a learning coach, Monique wants to learn as much as she can to help people with learning and reading challenges to feel more confident and capable in life. Contact Links for Monique:https://learnerobics.com.au/https://learnerobics.com.au/book-a-free-consulthttps://www.facebook.com/learnerobicshttps://www.instagram.com/learnerobics/www.linkedin.com/in/monique-peters-learning   Learn more about Fiona's speaking, radio and consultation services at Informed Health: https://informedhealth.com.au/Sign up to receive our newsletter by clicking here.InstagramFacebookLinkedInCredit for the music used in this podcast:The Beat of Nature Music by Olexy from Pixabay

Living with chronic health issues can be really frustrating and confusing. In this episode I discuss some of my own current challenges to explore the meaning in struggle and challenge in the hopes that we can all learn how to reduce how much time we can be stuck in the quagmire of "its not fair" and "I quit" in relation to life's challenges. It is all about the resilience we muster to rise again, adapting our strategies, and embracing the reality struggle as part of life. It's a conversation about finding hope when progress seems as elusive and ultimately learning how to dance with life; and know the difference between being buried and being planted, even though they both seem the same. Navigating Anxiety Management: a personal story and useful tipIt is one thing to have fear around something happening that is very unlikely, it is a whole other thing to have fear around something happening again. Are we coddling our youth into a state of emotional fragility? This is my question in today's episode; I explore the effects of 'safetyism' and the well intentioned but potentially harmful trend of creating 'safe spaces' and focusing too heavily on feelings.  I scrutinise the rise of unearned praise and its link to narcissism, and explain how competition is an essential ingredient for instilling resilience and the capacity to deal with failure. This episode isn't just a critique; it's the beginnings of a road map for those determined to equip the younger generation with the tools they need to navigate an imperfect world with confidence and independence. The age old question "where is the balance between keeping children safe but also fostering strength and resilience"? Most parents are absolutely doing the best they can with what they know, it's really tough being a parent and parents are judged all the time.  I believe my generation, like all generations have got some stuff right and some stuff very wrong. This  has been an extremely challenging time with the world changing so fast in the last 10 years that parents and children have been confronted with things that we have never had to deal with before. Join me in beginning this important discussion, not to lay blame on each other but to have healthy open dialogue and come up with solutions. The youth of today and their parents really need help. Are we fully grasping the cultural currents shaping our youth's physical and mental health? Young people have never been so anxious and depressed, in this episode I begin to delve into the many factors that I believe are contributing to these issues. I don't know it all and I don't have all the answers, however I believe it is important we start talking about these issues; even if that means discussing hot topics. I believe we learn from talking things out; not shutting down speech which is popular today.Embark on an important journey with me, as I begin a deep dive into the societal forces impacting the well-being of gen Z.  The digital realm our children inhabit is a far cry from the playgrounds of past generations. I discuss various social media  platforms including TikTok and Tumblr, you will be surprised about the differences between TikTok in China and the Western world. I discuss how smart phones and social media really work against your children; and touch on some of what they are really doing and seeing online. I also venture into the influence activists are having on our youth and the how compassion can be toxic. Many don't want to get involved in the culture wars however, they are coming for you and particularly your children whether you like it or not.The books I refer to in this episode are:We've Got Issues: How You Can Stand Strong for America's Soul and Sanity by Dr Phillip C. Struggling with addiction? My latest conversation with Margaret Muscat from Hilltop Hypnotherapy is an enlightening exploration of the transformative power of strategic psychotherapy and hypnotherapy. Margaret's own battles with anxiety and depression lend a deeply personal touch to her work, as she guides individuals through the complexities of addiction recovery and the search for healing. We discuss the connections between our daily habits, nutritional choices, and mental well-being. Margaret sheds light on how seemingly innocuous routines can spiral into addictions, and how emotional triggers play a pivotal role in this process. We share strategies for creating new rituals and making mindful choices that can pave the way for sustainable change, while also addressing the psychological and physiological aspects, such as the impact of gut health and nutrient deficiencies on behavior. To cap off our thought-provoking session, we delve into the emotional and cultural influences that intertwine with our food and alcohol choices, discussing the empowerment that comes from owning one's decisions without being defined by them. Margaret also reveals insights from her contribution to the book, "Making a Difference," which chronicles her own mental health journey and offers tools for fostering mental clarity and peace. A recent systematic review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine came to the conclusion that physical activity should be a mainstay approach in the management of depression, anxiety and psychological distress. In this episode I discuss this and other aspects of self-care can impact on our mental health. It is important to understand that good mental health is not the absence of negative feelings. I discuss this in more detail and the importance of embracing the full spectrum of life and our emotions and how resilience is key.Referencing this systematic review in the BMJ:Singh B, Olds T, Curtis R, et alEffectiveness of physical activity interventions for improving depression, anxiety and distress: an overview of systematic reviewsBritish Journal of Sports Medicine 2023;57:1203-1209. What is Health-ism?I've noticed this word being used more regularly, here is my take on it....In this culture there are unhealthy obsessions with health and unhealthy acceptance or maybe even affirmation and encouragement of poor health; in my opinion, both are a problematic. In this episode, I explore health-ism, is it good or bad? I look for a sense of balance; challenge the polarising views that paint individuals either as helpless victims or as solely to blame for their health issues. In this episode I discuss the truth about self-discipline and freedom, what does it really mean and how can you harness it to support your life and health goals? In my opinion, the wrong interpretation of these words leads to us sabotaging our goals.I discuss how the sacrifices we make today are investments in our future freedom.  Delving into how resisting immediate desires - like the all-too-common urge to raid the fridge - can set us on a path toward long-term well-being and satisfaction. It's not about restriction and deprivation, its about making nourishing choices that positively impact your health and life.I'll share with you effective strategies that will help you to resist instant gratification, and highlight the powerful role of epigenetics in shaping our future selves.I then discuss longevity and quality of life. Are you quick to blame certain foods for your digestive woes? What if I told you, it’s not always the food that’s the culprit?I have always taught my clients to listen to their body and see which foods sit well and which foods don't. It is not as simple however, as blaming the food for the symptom. It is important to look beyond that, and rule out other reasons for the symptoms you get when you eat that food.I delve into body signals, exploring the surprising link between sodium deficiency and reflux, I also discuss the role of proton pump inhibitors (common reflux medications) and their unintended consequences. Stressing the need to unearth the root causes, rather than resort to quick fixes that may manage your symptoms, but may not be a long term solution for you.Ever wondered why your taste buds seem to change over time, or why you can't resist those sugar cravings? I explore how nutrient deficiencies can play havoc with your taste buds. And how those relentless sugar cravings might be signaling low blood sugar, a poor diet or an out of balance gut microbiome. I discuss the evolution of children's taste buds and how this can influence their acceptance of previously shunned foods.Lastly, I touch on the complexities of interpreting your body's signs, an endeavor that can sometimes seem confusing an overwhelming; and may require an experienced practitioner (like me) to help you uncover the mysteries of our bodies' signs and signals.
