Reggae vs. Soca

Reggae vs. Soca

Machel Montano was an amazing host at Rise and Toast this past Sunday and I got to be in the King of Soca's presents. It was something that he said that really raised the question of, why is it always Reggae vs. Soca? And is there a clear front runner?

This year has brought so much to our community and now it also has taken some of it away. Let’s take the time to be proud of the music that makes us one big family. Soca literally means the '(So)ul of (Ca)lypso.' We aren’t new to this world and are Professionals in our own right. With soca in our soul there is nothing that we can’t do together. West Indie strong, we will be The Last One Standing.Don’t forget to follow the podcast’s new Instagram: @Westindieish
It is always great to have someone to share in your life experiences when you're growing up and in this case, I got to grow up alongside my cousin, Melissa. Please welcome her to the podcast as we continue this week's discussion of "Fresh Off the Boat" as first and second generation West Indie women in America. This week we will talk about what it’s like growing up in Miami and New York and our best advise for keeping the culture alive.
And just like that, the year is about to come to an end. This time of year is great for gathering and spending time together and reflecting on the year and even years past, but sometimes that is easier said than done.
Thankful and Grateful

Thankful and Grateful

This year has been a trying time for all so it's always good to take a moment to be thankful for the time that we have with family and friends, even when they get on our last nerves. In this episode, we'll talk about what it's like during Thanksgiving in a West Indie home.
One thing about the West-Indie culture is that we are made and raised with some "brought upsies." Not everything our parents and family have done is perfect but we sure knew and understood a little something about respect. In this episode, I'll give a topic to discuss at the dinner table for this Thanksgiving to bring in the holiday season.
Answer them with "What?", Suck your teeth, come home after midnight, leave a spoon in the sink...These are all ways that you can ensure quick punishment. This week's episode, although it is inspired by a social media post about annoying your Caribbean parents, is a little deeper than that and more so about the generational traumas and general ideas that come from the caribbean.
Welcome to the West Indie-ish where we talk about what it's like to grow up as 1st, 2nd, and even 3rd generation west indie. Our experiences are unique on an individualistic level but surprisingly very similar as a whole. The podcast will bring to light some of the similarities and hopefully create a space for us to share our stories and help create a discord on how we can help benefit our community. We may be born a foreign but at the end of the day we are all West Indie-ish. &nb...
