Midsummer is traditionally a time for fairies - although it is dangerous to visit the fairy world at this time! We talk about the Solstice and time that the sun appears to wobble in its 'apparent' orbit around the earth.    The Religion of the Ancient Celts by J. A. MacCulloch We select a passage concerning the Midsummer rituals from the Religions of the Ancient Celts by J. A. MacCulloch. This book, which appears for the first time on the Internet at Sacred Texts, is one of the earliest scholarly treatments of the ancient Celtic religion. Written early in the 20th Century, Religion of the Ancient Celts includes extensive treatment of that perennially fascinating subject, the Druids. MacCulloch details the Celtic belief in reincarnation and a spectral otherworld; documents the enormous pantheon of now-obscure gods and goddesses, including many local deities; and describes totemistic and animistic beliefs. In addition, MacCulloch does not flinch (nor sensationalize) when describing the darker side of Celtic practices, including the famous 'Burning Man' human sacrifices, cannibalism and exogamous incest.   Fairy Healing: the Lore and Legacy by Margie McArthur We then present a small section of a modern book about Fairy Healing: The Lore and Legacy written by Margie McArthur. The section we read is from Chapter 5: The Irish Traditions and tells us about the Fairy Doctor. Thank you to Margie for allowing us to read this for you. Find out more about Margie McArthur in our Contributor pages.    Shimmering Wings by Gaelic Wind Project They hail from Essen, Germany. Yet the repertoire of Gaelic Wind Project consists of Irish traditional songs and tunes, but they also perform their own material. This Irish folk band consists of two female lead vocalists who are accompanied by Irish wooden flute, accordion, guitar, Irish bouzouki and percussion. Gaelic Wind Project is a nice addition to any Celtic music collection. "Our new song Shimmering Wings is inspired by Juliet Marillier´s novel Daughter of the Forest. Here you´ll find more information about the author and her books." You can find the Gaelic Wind Project on the web at their homesite (now sadly gone). You can also find them on CD Baby.   The First Silkie by Willie Meikle Willie Meikle is a Scottish Author who writes Fantasy and Horror Fiction and has eight books published. Many of his stories and books are set in Scotland and are weaved with Mythology and folklore. Willie has had 130 stories published in the genre press, both in paper and on-line magazines and his work has appeared in the UK, Ireland, the USA, India, Greece, Romania and Canada. He has graciously allowed us to present an except from his novel, The Midnight Eye Files: The Sirens and concerns the origins of the Silkie – a fey creature able to shift from seal to human form. The tale tells us of the origin of the Silkie which concerns Viking Gods, Bold Fishermen and a wager between Gods and Men. It was translated by Ethna Carberry and published in Padraic Colum's (1881–1972) Anthology of Irish Verse, 1922. Lugh is the Celtic divinity whose name is most widely known. In mythology he is the Sun God. In the mythological cycle he is the deliverer of the De Danaans from the Fomorian oppression. He is the slayer of Balor, the glance of whose eye is death. But Lugh is also kin to Balor, his mother being Eithlinn, the daughter whom Balor had immured like Danae in a tower. There are actually another two verses to this poem, but the version we found and recorded didn't have them. So here are the extra two verses for your pleasure. This version can be found at Bartleby's.  He plays for her soothing the Slumber-song: Fine and faint as any dream it glides along: She sleeps until the magic of his kiss shall rouse;     And all her world is quiet in the Shadow-house. His days glide to night, and his nights glide to day: With circling of the amber mead, and feasting gay; In the yellow of her hair his dreams lie curled, And her arms make the rim of his rainbow world.   The Fires of Belenus by William Russeth A thousand years before the Romans, Celtic people cultivated the Rhone Valley. Celtic languages were spoken from Asia Minor to Spain and from Northern Italy to Ireland. By the third century BC, their culture had evolved into a complex civilization with sophisticated social structures, laws, and folklore that are the roots of modern European culture. But the Celtic world was a violent world, controlled by mystical Druids and warrior chieftains, ready to take the heads of their rivals over the most trifling insult. Fires of Belenus is a romantic tale, that tantalizes readers with rational portrayals of mythical events found in the CuChulainn and Arthurian legends. Written by William Russeth, the chapter we read is exciting and contains wonderful symbology. Many, many thanks to William for allowing us to present Chapter Thirty-Six. The Sword in the Stone, Lady of Lake, and CuChulainn's stand at the river ford are brought to life in plausible new ways that make the work unique. There are many different translations of The Song of Amergin, which is perhaps the best known piece of all ancient Celtic poetry. With great thanks to the inestimable Mary Jones for her enthusiasm and scholarship, we can present what is possibly the best translation of the earliest transcription. The terrible curse laid on the Children of Lir unfurls! The Tuatha De Danaan retreat underground and choose a new High King to guide them. Lir, ancient God of the Sea, feels that he should be chosen and falls to wrath as the Children of Danu choose the mighty Bodb Dearg to be their King. The Australian Standing Stones began as an ambitious project by a small, dedicated group of citizens who wanted to mark Glen Innes's Celtic heritage. It was in Australia's 1988 Bicentenary Year that the Celtic Council of Australia developed the idea of erecting a national monument to honour all Celtic peoples who helped pioneer Australia. Glen Innes responded with a 46-page submission for Australian Standing Stones, inspired by the Ring of Brodgar in Scotland's Orkneys. Right from the start they decided to rearrange Traditional Celtic music into modern Folk-Rock songs and tunes. Apart from that, it was very important to them to bring Folk music to the younger generation. To their surprise not only did the younger generation like their music. This was more as apparent as they played a concert with “Wishbone Ash”, the audience being (putting it mildly) a little bit older. They have kindly given us permission to play a wonderful piece of foot-tapping music, called the Kesh Jig from their album, Birds & Beasts. See the Myspace page and hear more music or visit their homepage, Connemara Stone.   Lughnasadh: The Land Gives Birth by Shae Clancy and Francine Nicholson Shae Clancy and Francine Nicholson have collected essays from Celtic scholars to form a fascinating book that helps to explain the difference between Celtic fact (what we actually know) from Celtic fiction (what we speculate). Sadly, the book has never been published and Francine passed away in 2003. Shae has enabled the book to be published on the web. Francine Nicholson, M.A., was a librarian in New England and scholar of all things Celtic. The loss of her passing, perhaps appropriately on 1 February 2003 (Imbolc), is poignantly crystallised by fellow Celtic scholar, David Stifter: 'It is very sad news to hear that Francine Nicholson has left us. She had a vast and astounding erudition and knowledge of Celtic mythology and folklore, and her contributions . . . were a great source of enrichment and information. I feel it as a heavy loss that she will no longer contribute to our discussions.'   Lughnasadh by Damh the Bard Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. Damh is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. Kelley was born with a vivid imagination and a fascination with ancient history and the supernatural. Though she resides on the earthly realm, she always has one foot firmly planted in the otherworldly realm of mystical creatures and magic. She has written numerous short stories and song lyrics. Gwenhwyfar is the only hope for the future, but betrayal, revenge and forbidden love surround her, threatening to destroy the lives of four people, and send Britain and Avalon into ruins.
