Pig & Okja

Pig & Okja

2022-06-1301:25:03

The GCU is alive! Season 5 kicks off with the theme of Nicolas Cage. Each episode we are pairing a Nicolas Cage movie with a non-Cage film. This episode, we're discussing a rather depressing, animal nabbing double feature.Pig (2021) is the Nicolas Cage entry of the double feature. Cage plays a truffle farmer that just wants to spend his days hunting truffles with his pig bestie. Unfortunately, devious parties have other plans. We follow one pig nabbing with another, Bong Joon-ho’s Okja (2017). Okja is no normal pig, though, she’s a huge, adorable, CGI creature. In this cinematic universe, though, not even cute hippo sized CGI creatures are safe. Enjoy!Timestamps00:00 – Intro/Greetings05:43 – Pig (2021)31:16 – Okja (2017)1:04:45 – Pig & Okja Cinematic UniverseNew episodes are recorded live the Thursday before the audio replay hits the podcast feed. The Grawlix Cinematic Universe, much like Jason Voorhees, simply can’t resist causing trouble when a Friday the 13th pops up on the calendar. Even if everyone thought it was dead. It’s murder-zombie time.Well, hold on now. For the 4th installment in our Friday the 13th special series Randy is taking a look at the 2009 Platinum Dunes reboot of Friday the 13th and it’s less zombified Jason. The movie, though, might make you FEEL like a zombie. How does this film compare to the previous 11 entries in the series? Will we see another official Jason release any time soon? Can Randy manage to stay upbeat while reviewing this reboot/remake? Take a listen to find out! (Spoilers: Blandly, no, and NO.)Miss our previous specials and Jason episodes? Then you’re missing out on a good time!Friday the 13th SpecialFriday the 13th Special Part IIFriday the 13th Special Part IIIGCU #34: Leprechaun vs Jason In SpaceGCU #14: Alien vs Predator vs Freddy vs JasonFull show notes and more: https://grawlixpodcast.com/2021/08/gcu-friday-the-13th-part-4/  ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Happy Holidays, ya’ old building and loan! It’s the time of year to bust out the Jimmy Stewart impressions, mix in a bit of Randy Savage because it’s all pizza, and fire up your favorite Christmas classics. And by Christmas classics we mean horror movies, of course.Yes, it’s the gift that keeps giving… the Monster of the Week segment! We gathered the whole Grawlix Podcast and Grawlix Cinematic Universe crew around the smoldering yule log that is 2020 to discuss Holiday horror movies. It just seemed appropriate.Melanie and Randy tag team a double feature of Black Christmas. Melanie first discusses the original 1974 proto-slasher before Randy gets out-SJW-ed by the 2019 “remake”. Jesse brings some levity with the 80s Christmas comedy classic Ernest Saves Christmas. Jasper follows up with a stocking stuffed with ultra-camp in the over-the-top horror comedy Santa’s Slay starring Bill Goldberg. Finally, we stick a bow on the evening with a game! Randy finds the most ridiculous reviews of holiday classics from Letterboxd.com users for a few rounds of “guess the movie by the review.” Yeah, that’s a totally original, never before heard of game… we swear. Enjoy!Originally streamed live December 17th, 2020 via Facebook Live, Twitch, and YouTube.Video replay, show notes, and more: https://grawlixpodcast.com/2020/12/nights-12-17-2020/ ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
We opened this season with our first Friday the 13th Special covering Friday the 13th parts 1 – 3. We went for a winter campout with our Friday the 13th Special Part II covering the 4th, 5th, and 6th entries in the franchise. We even took an unscheduled trip to space with Jason X in our Leprechaun vs Jason In Space episode. Now it is time to slam the coffin lid shut on this iconic camp slasher franchise AND season 4 of the podcast.Randy is joined by returning guests Paul of Moose’s Monster Mash and Jordan of The Movie Guys Podcast.  We discuss the good and the bad of what we’re calling the supernatural (or gimmick) trilogy of the franchise. First, Jason takes on Carrie in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. Then Jason barely sets foot in Manhattan in Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. And finally, Jason (and the franchise as a whole) goes straight to hell in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. Mandy & Color Out of Space

Mandy & Color Out of Space

2020-02-2401:15:04

Jasper returns and he brought with him a magenta-soaked Nicolas Cage double feature! Up first is the heavy metal revenge fantasy Mandy. This surreal film is directed by Panos Cosmatos and combines 70s and 80s genre schlock with arthouse stylization. Then we follow up with another colorful and stylish Nicolas Cage gone mad (or rather, more mad than usual) film, Color Out of Space. Director Richard Stanley returns to filmmaking after 20 years with this beautifully shot and disturbing adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft tale. Of course, it wouldn't be Grawlix Cinematic Universe unless we then try to mash these films together in some kind of ultimate, unholy Nic Cage horror epic. Two podcasts. Two movies. One CINEMATIC UNIVERSE! On this episode we’re not only mashing up movies, we’re mashing up podcasts! Randy is joined by Austen and Travis of Trashed Talk Podcast to discuss Blue Ruin (2013) and Green Room (2016). Both films are written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier and are intense thrillers focusing on people doing bad things but not doing them particularly well. This is a true mashup podcast so we combined the best of both shows. In addition to our usual movie reviews and cinematic universe pitches Austen and Travis treat us to two segments from their podcast, Real News or Fake News and Duke It Out or Puke It Out!  Enjoy!Full show notes and more: https://grawlixpodcast.com/2020/02/gcu-39/ ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
What Did David Do?

What Did David Do?

2020-01-2730:55

David Lynch’s new short film ‘What Did Jack Do?’ recently dropped on Netflix so Randy hijacked this episode to discuss the unique and iconic filmmaker’s work. Why are David Lynch’s films so strange? Is it high art? Is it pretentious? What’s up with Twin Peaks: The Return? Why does Randy love this weird stuff? Enjoy!Full show notes and more: https://grawlixpodcast.com/2020/01/gcu-38/ ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
On this episode, Randy is joined by Grawlix Podcast co-host Melanie for a technology gone awry horror double feature! First up is the 2018 single-location horror thriller Await Further Instructions. Then we jump back 30 years to the 1988 hidden gem that is Pulse, starring Joey Lawrence! This pairing goes to show that even as technology has changed, fear stays the same. Critters & Gremlins

Critters & Gremlins

2019-12-2301:12:41

This episode Randy is joined by guest Jordan of The Movie Guys Podcast. We kick the holiday viewing off with a true Christmas horror-comedy classic, 1984’s Gremlins! Tiny monsters tend to roam in packs, though, so we followed Gremlins up with Critters, released in 1986.As with our recent Friday the 13th Special, there is also an Extended Cut of this episode available to our supporters on Patreon. Become a supporter to hear the near 2 hour long Extended Cut! What does the Extended Cut include? Randy is once again joined by guest Paul H. Harder III to share campfire tales of tawdry teens and hockey masked homicidal maniacs. This time our happy campers explore the “Tommy Jarvis trilogy” of Friday the 13th Parts 4, 5, and 6.While the Jason franchise didn’t deviate as far as the Halloween series when it tried to go in a new direction, it did backtrack just as fast. We somehow start with The Final Chapter before kicking ol’ Jason to the curb with The New Beginning only to begin yet again with Jason Lives. Enjoy!Become a supporter on Patreon to hear the full Extended Cut of this episode featuring an hour more of Jason talk including kill by kill breakdowns of each of these films! https://www.patreon.com/posts/friday-13th-part-32205090 ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Last Shift & Darling

Last Shift & Darling

2019-11-2549:03

Randy locked the doors, turned the lights down low, and watched two horror movies about being trapped in a creepy place… alone. First up in this spooky double-feature is Last Shift, a film about a rookie cop’s first shift that, unfortunately for her, happens to be the final graveyard shift in an abandoned police station. That’s followed up with Darling (2015) in which a caretaker loses more than just her wits while housesitting the oldest home in New York. These slashers gone sci-fi movies are exactly as advertised. Friday the 13th and Leprechaun... on a spaceship.Strap in tight because Randy is joined by special co-host Matt D. of 60's Reboot Podcast for an appropriately epic breakdown of both films. Plus, as always, the boys each pitch their own take on the Jason vs Leprechaun mash-up you never knew you wanted... IN SPACE! The Warriors & Murder Party

The Warriors & Murder Party

2019-10-2801:26:23

Happy Halloween! We’re slapping on our last minute cardboard costumes and baseball uniforms because we’ve got a party to attend. Before we do, though, we’ve got to make our way through multiple hostile neighborhoods. It’s going to be one heck of a crazy knight! This can mean only one thing. It’s another Halloween episode! This time we go light on the horror but heavy on the camp. We kick this funky double feature off with Murder Party, an underrated 2007 horror comedy written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier. This is Saulnier’s first feature film and he has since directed Blue Ruin, Green Room, and Hold the Dark. After the party we then trek through a weird 70’s New York with The Warriors, directed by Walter Hill. Can you dig it!? Two movie nerds isn’t quite a gang, though, so we called in backup. Grawlix Podcast’s own Jesse Kiefer joined us to take on both of these films and yes, we were all dressed in coordinating gang costumes. Would love to hear what you think our gang’s theme would be and if it’s more or less cool than the Baseball Furies!Full show notes and more: https://grawlixpodcast.com/2019/10/gcu33/ ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
It's time. It's time! It's time for Halloween horror movies! This episode not only kicks off the horror-themed Season 4 of the podcast but also the first of two Halloween episodes this year.First, this All Hallows double feature invades our homes with The Guest, the 2014 horror-thriller in which we learn to be careful who we let in. Even if he is handsome and likes synthwave. Fortunately, this is also the night NO ONE came home because we also watched Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Yes, it's the one WITHOUT Michael Myers. What does the third installment in the Halloween franchise have? 80's computer witchcraft, magic stonehenge rocks, ancient robots, Tom Atkins, and a killer John Carpenter/Alan Howarth score. No, really. We then attempt to pitch a shared cinematic universe combining a movie about an unstoppable killer and the one movie in an unstoppable killer franchise that doesn't have one. Beware black cats, broken mirrors, and other ridiculous superstitions because it's Friday the 13th! Luckily for you, we've got just the podcast special to listen to while you cower in your hiding spot from Pamela and Jason Voorhees. Paul H. Harder III joins Randy to talk about the first three films in the iconic camp slasher franchise. The two redneck murder zombies discuss Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981), and Friday the 13th Part III (1982).For full show notes and links: https://grawlixpodcast.com/2019/09/gcu-friday-the-13th/ ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
It's the season 3 finale! That's right, this episode we discuss Quentin Tarantino's latest movie which means Season #Taran3no has come to an end. It has been an interesting journey starting at the beginning of Tarantino's filmography and working through to this episode's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood review. We do give a SPOILER warning before diving into them. Check the timestamps below for when it is safe to tune back in.So many crooks and criminals. Slurs and shootouts. Vixens and... um, their feet. With it all so fresh in our minds we also decided what better time than now to offer up our list of Quentin Tarantino movies ranked from best to least best. LIST EPISODE!It wouldn't be an episode of Grawlix Cinematic Universe without a cinematic universe. Thankfully, superfriend Matt D. of the 60's Reboot Podcast sent in his pitch for a shared QT universe and no, this is NOT the Tarantino cinematic universe you've already heard about. It’s the penultimate episode of Season #Taran3no! Like in GCU #29 we once again find ourselves in the Old West. No mechanical spiders to be found, though. Just a massive ensemble of gunslingers, bounty hunters, civil war vets, and villainous varmints.First in our adjective-numeral themed western double feature is a golden age Hollywood film about seven men – who fought like seven hundred. The Magnificent Seven starring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson. To be clear, that’s the 1960 American remake of the classic Japanese film, Seven Samurai. Not the 2016 American remake of the 1960 American remake of the classic Japanese film, Seven Samurai. It wouldn’t be Season #Taran3no without over-the-top violence and racial slurs, though. We also discuss a film about eight strangers who, quite frankly, are just not very friendly people. Of course, we’re talking about the cabin fever inducing Netflix extended cut of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. To even the odds on this magnificently hateful double feature we asked Matt D. of 60’s Reboot Podcast and Comics with my Kids to join us. Hold on, Daisy! Season #Taran3no continues it’s pursuit of vengeance and it’s about to get wild. How wild? Will Smith, Kevin Kline, steampunk robot spider wild. Yes, we start this episode with a review of the 1999 big budget flop, Wild Wild West. Then we move from post-Civil War west to pre-Civil War south with Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino’s slavery revenge “southern”. Nothing says wacky hijinks and thrilling adventure like good ol’ WWII! That’s right! Follow two groups of lovable misfits on a romp through Nazi occupied France. These boys are behind enemy lines and in over their heads. Wacky!Yep, season #Taran3no has brought us to Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and the 1978 Italian produced inspiration for the film, The Inglorious Bastards.
