We're covering:

Transitions

Your wedding is a time for transition, for both you and your parents. It's important to acknowledge that there are feelings attached with that for both of you.

Acknowledging That Your Parents Have a Role to Play In Your Wedding Too

Just as you take on responsibilities with which ever title you assume in this journey, e.g. Bride, your parents have their own sense of responsibilities about how they need to show up and what kind of part they will play in your wedding.

Get Clear on Your Wedding Purpose and Who it is For

Establishing this will make it much easier to approach them!

Open a Dialogue About Your Wedding Plans

Ask your parents how they feel about your wedding plans. Ask why certain aspects are important to them, then you can negotiate or come up with a brand new way to allow them to fulfil that role.

Establish Boundaries

Decide what you need to do to feel comfortable and stick to it.

Do What You Have to Do

Appreciate that values change over time and your values may no longer align with your parents' — that's OK. This doesn't make you bad. You need to do what makes you (and your partner) feel safe and comfortable.
