In a previous post we talked about why podcasts are a great educational tool for curious, tech-savvy children. Since there are so many great kid-friendly podcasts out there, we thought we’d share our top five shows.
From a podcast series from a sports superstar to an absurdist improvised comedy show for kids, here are our picks for the best podcasts for kids.
The Punies
Created by NBA legend and Oscar winner Kobe Bryant, The Punies tells the story of “the Good Ol’ Gang,” a diverse group of neighborhood friends. Each episode focuses on a different sport, but kids who have a variety of hobbies and interests can learn a lot from Puny Pete and his friends as they work together to overcome their fears and accomplish their goals together.
Produced by Bryant’s Granity Studios and Cadence13, the podcast features an impressive cast as well as original music. If you’re planning a road trip in the near future, The Punies is a great choice for both parents and kids to enjoy together.
Brains On! Science podcast for kids
Why do airplanes fly? Do dogs know they’re dogs?
These are some of the questions Brains On! tackles each week. Co-hosted by both “kid scientists” and reporters, each episode covers a new topic that is just as interesting to adults as it is kids. With over 250+ shows available, you and your kiddo won’t run out of new things to discover and learn anytime soon.
Story Time – Children’s bedtime stories
Reading a book to a child before bedtime is a tradition as old as time, but for parents who need a break from the normal nighttime routine, there’s Story Time from Bedtime FM. The series is a podcast, but each story is told in an audiobook format. Kids will love the music, funny sound effects, and great narration and look forward to a new episode every two weeks.
Story Pirates
What started out as a sketch comedy show based on stories written by kids became Story Pirates, a media company that has released a book series, albums, live shows, and of course, a podcast. Featuring the voices of some of the best improvisers today, as well as a few famous actors like Dax Shepard and Claire Danes, each thirty-minute episode of the Story Pirates podcast is a roller coaster ride of craziness your kids will love.
The Past & The Curious: A History Podcast for Kids
Finding entertainment kids and their parents can enjoy together is difficult, but The Past & The Curious proves it’s possible. Funny, educational, and inspirational, each episode tells different stories from history that relate to a common theme, like Niagara Falls or spies. There’s also original music during most of the episodes and a “quiz time” section that encourages kids to pay attention so they can answer the questions correctly. If only history class had been this interesting when we were in school…
