Podcast: Razib Khan's Unsupervised Learning (LS 49 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: Karl Smith: inflation, the debt crisis, China and the American tripartite class systemPub date: 2021-08-06Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationEconomics is obviously important. Recently in the US, we’ve been talking about the threat of inflation, and spending financed through debt. What does this all mean? Not only are the answers important on a macro level, but they’re also relevant to all of us. To attack these questions I decided to talk to Karl Smith, a columnist at Bloomberg. We tackle four big topics: Are we on the path toward severe inflation? (in the US) Is the US headed toward a public debt crisis in the 2020’s? What is the path forward for the US-China relationship? Finally, Karl proposes his own understanding of the new class system in the US, divided into three groups, and how we can proceed forward in a reasonably equitable manner The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Razib Khan, which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.

But there is still room for purely humanistic disciplines to help us think through our thoughts and emotions, not to mention the meaning of our lives. Mari Ruti is a professor of English literature, with expertise in critical theory, gender studies, and psychoanalysis, especially the work of French theorist Jacques Lacan. We talk about the psychological drive that is motivated by what Lacan calls “lack,” which is related to “desire.” We use this as a way to think about such essential human experiences as mourning, creativity, and love. At its heart is the fact that entropy increases over time, which in turn can be traced to special conditions in the early universe. David Wallace is one of the world’s leading philosophers working on the foundations of physics, including space and time as well as quantum mechanics. We talk about how increasing entropy gives rise to the arrow of time, and what it is about the early universe that makes this happen. Then we cannot help but connecting this story to features of the Many-Worlds (Everett) interpretation of quantum mechanics.Support Mindscape on Patreon.David Wallace received a D.Phil. in Physics and a D.Phil. in Philosophy from Oxford University. Podcast: Razib Khan's Unsupervised Learning (LS 49 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: Alex Mesoudi: the origins of cultural evolutionPub date: 2021-07-23Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationIn this conversation, I discuss “cultural evolution” with Alex Mesoudi. The very term can be confusing and perplexing to some. After all, it seems intuitive that culture evolves and changes. But here Mesoudi and I discuss the science of cultural evolution, which is today a robust and interdisciplinary field (also see my conversation with Richard McElreath). Why do cultures vary? How fast and why do they change? What is the relation between genes and cultures? All these are topics that cultural evolution as a field addresses. The origins of cultural evolution go back to the 1970’s and 1980’s, in particular, with the research of three pairs of researchers: L. L. Cavalli-Sforza and Marcus Feldman, Cultural Transmission and Evolution E. O. Wilson and Charles Lumsden, Genes, Mind, and Culture Robert Boyd and Peter Richerson, Culture and Evolutionary Process These scholars understood cultural evolution as a branch of population biology. More precisely, they leveraged evolutionary genetic modes of thinking and models and applied them to cultural processes. Boyd and Richerson in particular have continued working in this area (see Not By Genes Alone) and spawned a whole coterie of scholars. In a wide-ranging conversation, Mesoudi offers his opinion on topics as variegated as reductionism, the importance of theory, group selection, and the utility of memes. Also, I should mention that he’s written the literal book on the topic, Cultural Evolution: How Darwinian Theory Can Explain Human Culture and Synthesize the Social Sciences. Podcast: Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas (LS 69 · TOP 0.05% what is this?)Episode: 157 | Elizabeth Strychalski on Synthetic Cells and the Rules of BiologyPub date: 2021-07-26Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationNatural selection has done a pretty good job at creating a wide variety of living species, but we humans can’t help but wonder whether we could do better. Using existing genomes as a starting point, biologists are getting increasingly skilled at designing organisms of our own imagination. But to do that, we need a better understanding of what different genes in our DNA actually do. Elizabeth Strychalski and collaborators recently announced the construction of a synthetic microbial organism that self-reproduces just like a normal unicellular creature. This work will help us understand the roles of genes in reproduction, one step on the road to making DNA molecules and artificial cells that will perform a variety of medical and biological tasks.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Elizabeth Strychalski received her Ph.D. in physics from Cornell University.
