EPISODE 166 DETAILS 2023 turned out to be an awfully good year to be in the cattle business.  Prices were record setting for many producers and hopefully yall were able to take advantage of them.  But the big question is what does 2024 hold?  Well, no one knows for sure or has a crystal ball but forecasts look promising.  We visit with Kirk Donsbach from Stone X Financial about cattle trends for the next year! When it comes to choosing the right antibiotic to treat cattle, it should be anything but a guessing game. While there are many factors that weigh into creating a treatment regimen, understanding the different classes of antibiotics and how they work is important to ensure your cattle are getting the best treatment response.  We have some great information curiosity of Elanco Animal Health!  Click HERE for additional information! We just made purchasing your next herd sire so much easier!  All the information you need to know including vidoes, sale books, pictures, information about the sale date and location, websites, contact info and much more can be found on the all new Ranch Channel!  Check it out!   ANTIBIOTICS 101 - TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT TREATMENT FOR YOUR BEEF CATTLE When it comes to choosing the right antibiotic to treat cattle, it should be anything but a guessing game. While there are many factors that weigh into creating a treatment regimen, understanding the different classes of antibiotics and how they work is important to ensure your cattle are getting the best treatment response.   A variety of infectious diseases can compromise cattle health, affecting growth, performance and operational profitability. Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) is one of the most common and costly. Prevention is the first line of defense against BRD. Having management protocols in place to reduce risk factors, along with a vaccine program, can help protect your herd. But when animals do get sick, it’s vital to identify and treat cattle as soon as possible with the right treatment to ensure the longevity of treatment options and reduce the risk of resistance.   Not all antibiotics are created equal Every antibiotic has a different mix of characteristics. Knowing the antibiotic class and its characteristics when treating cattle gives a better understanding of how it works. Two of the most common antibiotic classes used to treat respiratory disease in cattle are macrolides and fluoroquinolones. Macrolides are time-dependent bacteriostatic antibiotics. This means they must maintain a minimal concentration that is greater than the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) over a period of time to overcome infectious bacteria. The MIC is the minimum amount of drug needed to suppress the replication of bacteria. The longer the antibiotic is present in the animal at or above the MIC level, the more it inhibits bacteria reproduction so allowing time for macrolides to work is critical. In certain “bug-drug” combinations such as tulathromycin and some isolates of Mannheimia haemolytica, macrolides can be bactericidal making initial concentrations and appropriate dosing more critical. Fluoroquinolones are concentration-dependent bactericidal antibiotics. This means they only need to reach concentrations above the MIC for very short periods to be effective. In some models, the higher the initial concentration of the fluoroquinolone above the MIC, the more effective the therapy. How to choose the correct antibiotic Understanding how an antibiotic works is one step to minimizing the risk of resistance. There are a few things producers should ask themselves when choosing an antibiotic to make the right choice for their operation: Do I know the health history of the cattle being treated? If there was a metaphylaxis treatment with one class of antibiotic, using a different class if subsequent treatment is required may be warranted. Do I know the weight of the animal being treated? Remember when administering antibiotics, the dose is based on weight of the animal. Getting an accurate weight on each animal being treated is important to the success rate of antibiotic therapy. What is the causative pathogen? Necropsies are an excellent tool to understand what bacteria your cattle are challenged with. Cultures can help determine what bacteria is affecting your herd and the best treatment for that strain. Have I read the product label? Once you understand the bacteria strain you’re dealing with, it’s important to choose a product that’s labeled to control or treat that associated bacteria. It’s also important to ensure you are following directions for proper dosage, route of administration and withdrawal periods to get the most effective treatment. Do I have bigger issues to address? When seeing an uptick in BRD cases, we can often put the blame on animal health products. It’s important to remember medicine cannot overcome poor management. Good animal husbandry and management practices, reducing stress and a solid nutrition program are critical to positive animal health. Work with your veterinarian to determine where current practices may be contributing to illness. Producers should consult their veterinarian to help them choose appropriate classes of antibiotics and consider antibiotic characteristics such as the spectrum of activity, mode of action, duration of action, efficacy and withdrawal period to help them treat their herd responsibly. With consistent, thorough application of best practices, the responsible use of antibiotics will help ensure the health of animals and improve food safety for the next generation and beyond.   To learn more about tools to help control, treat and prevent BRD on your operation, talk with your Elanco representative or visit ElancoBRD.com.   FEATURING Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos Questions & Concerns From The Field? COW COUNTRY NEWS   The SEC Seeks To Halt A $191 Million Cattle Ponzi Scheme According DTN Progressive Farmer and Meating Place, The Securities and Exchange Commission has frozen the assets of a Texas-based cattle marketing company, alleging the company fraudulently sold securities in "cattle contracts" as a $191 million Ponzi scheme that would "soon implode."   The company, Agridime LLC out of Fort Worth, Texas, is now under a court-ordered receivership under the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas with Agridime's assets frozen after the SEC obtained a temporary restraining order against Agridime and its owners.   Agridime has raised $191 million since 2021 from more than 2,100 investors in at least 15 states, the SEC stated. The SEC stated Agridime, however, had less than $1.5 million in cash as of Sept. 30, and insufficient operating revenues. The SEC stated, "It appears that Agridime's Ponzi scheme will soon implode unless it continues to raise money from new investor-victims."   Agridime sells investment contracts related to the buying and selling of cattle, dubbed as "cattle contracts." The SEC complaint stated Agridime promised investors guaranteed annual returns ranging from 15% to 20% -- going as high as 32% -- and marketed cattle contracts on Agridime's website as a way for investors to passively profit from owning cattle "without having to do all of the work."   Agridime is owned by Jed Wood, 62, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Josh Link, 30, of Gilbert, Arizona. Both are named as defendants in the case. Wood and Link founded Agridime in 2017.    The SEC alleges they told investors that Agridime would use their funds to acquire, feed, and raise cattle on its network of ranches, and investors would help provide “fellow Americans with the highest quality farm fresh beef available.” However, as the complaint alleges, the defendants did not purchase nearly enough cattle or generate sufficient revenues from cattle operations to deliver the promised returns.   Instead, the complaint alleges that, since December 2022, the defendants have used at least $58 million of new investor funds to make Ponzi payments to prior investors and more than $11 million to pay undisclosed sales commissions to Wood, Link, Link’s wife, and other Agridime sales representatives.    A U.S. District Judge extended the SEC's temporary restraining order until Jan. 9, 2024, and delayed a hearing on the SEC's request for a preliminary injunction until a hearing now set for Jan. 5, 2024.   Some Top Highlighted Stories of 2023 from The Cattle Business Weekly  Cattle Prices Climb Throughout the year cattle prices continued to climb on all classes of cattle. That was a welcome relief for many cattle operations as higher interest rates and input costs were making bottom lines thin.  During the fall calf run October-November fresh weaned calves brought $1600-$1800 per head. That is almost double what was realized in 2022. Prices tapered off with uncertainty in the board as the final month of the year arrived, but overall prices were still above the year prior. Big Boost To Agricultural Research Funding USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture has established a new Research Facilities Act Program competitive grant program, which was approved to provide one-year funds for the first time in 2023. The program is designed to assist in the construction, alteration, acquisition, modernization, renovation, or remodeling of an agricultural research facility to enhance the institution’s long-term impact on food and agricultural research. Awardees include: Mississippi State University, Texas A&M AgriLife Research, University of Idaho, University of Illinois, University of Kentucky, University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  Additional public and private funding sources are also emerging with a focus on agricultural research. As examples: the University of California at Davis received a $50 million private donation to build an agricultural research hub. Similarly, Ohio State University is developing an AgTech Innovation Hub and the University of Idaho will receive $55 million from USDA for ag research. Both efforts will research how to combat the impact of climate change. As well, Mississippi State University recently opened the Agricultural Autonomy Institute, the nation’s first and only interdisciplinary research center focused on autonomous technologies to enhance on-farm precision and efficiency.  Cattle Contracts Library Pilot Program Will Continue Made available in January 2023, the USDA launched the Cattle Contracts Library Pilot Program in an effort to support the cattle market and show transparency in contract terms offered by packers to producers for the purchase of cattle.  In October, the USDA continued the Cattle Contracts Library Pilot Program in order to continue reporting vital market information for farmers and ranchers while gathering additional information on the effectiveness of the pilot. Support For More Regional Meat Processing Grows Piggybacking off of USDA funding in 2022, came additional funding for meat processors this year.  $125 million through two new grant programs was created to offer more options for meat and poultry farmers by investing in independent, local meat and poultry processing projects that increase competition and enhance the resiliency of the food supply chain. An additional $43 million was given for meat and poultry processing research, innovation and expansion in USDA’s support of its ongoing efforts to transform the food system at every stage along the supply chain.  TOP HAND Larry Schnell Read more HERE FEATURING Justin Dikoff DV Auction https://www.dvauction.com/ @DVAuction   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos   Larry Schnell Top Hand, NDSU 98th Little International Agriculturist of the Year @NDSUAnimalSciences @NDSUSaddleandSirloin https://www.ndsu.edu/agriculture/academics/academic-units/animal-sciences https://www.ndsusaddleandsirloin.com/   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial ht

It’s likely that beef production for this year will be  only 509 million pounds – 1.9% - lower than a year ago, the report said. That’s a sharp improvement from the expected 8% drop forecast a year ago. Meanwhile, the USDA held steady with its beef import forecast, anticipating a 12% rise, and its expectations for an 8% drop in beef exports. That means that the country’s supply of beef per capita is roughly unchanged, according to Steiner analysis.  Beef Exports Fall As Imports Rise Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist recently wrote for meatingplace.com saying that U.S. beef trade continues to evolve in the face of a unique domestic cattle market situation.  Beef exports in February were down 1.3% year over year with the two-month total thus far in 2024 down 2.6%.  This follows a 2023 year over year decrease of 14.3% from record 2022 beef exports.  Beef exports in the first two months of the year are down year over year from most of the top markets; including number one Japan, number two South Korea, and number three China/Hong Kong.  Additionally, Canada, the number five market is down 2.0% thus far in 2024, along with number six Taiwan.  Mexico, which had been the number three market as recently as 2019, is currently the number four market but recovering.  Beef exports to Mexico were up in January and February. Beef imports in February were up 23.8% year over year and are up 31.9% in the first two months of the year.  Beef imports this year are led by Brazil, who jumps out strongly to fill the “other country” quota early in the year, with shipments moderating after two or three months in the face of the over-quota tariff.  Imports from Brazil are up 41.8% year over year thus far in 2024.  Imports from Australia are up sharply so far this year.  Canada is the number two import source, slightly ahead of Australia and up 9.0 percent year over year.  New Zealand is the number four beef import source and is up 48.6 percent thus far in 2024.   Beef exports continue to face headwinds as beef production decreases and beef prices increase in the U.S. market.  A generally strong U.S. dollar adds additional headwinds, making U.S. beef imports more expensive to international customers.  At the same time, decreasing domestic beef supplies in the U.S., coupled with higher prices, attracts additional beef imports, with the strong dollar adding additional incentive for beef imports.  As is typical, beef imports are heavily dominated by imports of lean processing beef to supplement decreasing supplies of non fed beef in the U.S.  Decreasing lean beef supplies, coupled with strong ground beef demand in the U.S. is pushing 90 percent lean prices (and ground beef prices) to record levels.  Fed beef (steer and heifer) production is declining, but the large percentage of yield grade 4 and 5 in feedlot cattle means that the supply of fatty (50 percent lean) trimmings is high relative to lean beef supplies and stimulating strong demand for domestic and imported lean processing beef to increase ground beef production.   UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS CHAROLAIS HEREFORD GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS SOUTH DEVON POUNDMAKER NAVIGATOR   DLCC Ranch:  April 20, 2024, Pierz, Minnesota Four Hill Farm North Country Angus Alliance: April 21, 2024, Bagley, Minnesota Spruce Hill Ranch: May 2, 2024, Bowman, ND BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms Upstream Ranch Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh Schiefelbein Farms Wasem Red Angus Raven Angus Krebs Ranch Yon Family Farms Chestnut Angus Eichacker Simmentals & JK Angus Windy Creek Cattle Company Pedersen Broken Heart Ranch Mar Mac Farms Warner Beef Genetics Arda Farms & Freeway Angus Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus Fast - Dohrmann - Strommen RBM Livestock Weber Land & Cattle Sundsbak Farms Hidden Angus Wheatland Cattle Company Miller Angus Farms L 83 Ranch U2 Ranch Vollmer Angus Ranch A & B Cattle Carter Angus Farms Roller Ranch Montgomery Ranch Jorgensen Farms FEATURING Robby Bondurant, Ph.D. Willard Lemaster Furst - McNess Company https://www.mcness.com/ https://www.mcness.com/legacy-forward-beef/ @FurstMcNessCompany   Austin Henderson Stockmen's Livestock http://www.gostockmens.com/ @GoStockmens @AustinDanJohn   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos   Questions & Concerns From The Field? These reports provide critical data and the decision to end them is completely misguided. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane said “It is disingenuous for the same agency which touts its commitment to transparency in livestock markets to arbitrarily cease publication of reports which provide just that. While it may be politically expedient to blame appropriators in Congress for today’s decision, cattle producers know better than to believe discontinuing a handful of reports will result in substantial cost savings for the Department.” He went on to say that “NCBA calls on USDA-NASS to immediately reverse this decision and continue delivering on its stated mission of providing timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture.”  For the complete article click HERE UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS CHAROLAIS HEREFORD GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS Montgomery Ranch: April 13, 2024, Carrington, North Dakota Jorgensen Farms:  April 15, 2024, Ideal, South Dakota DLCC Ranch:  April 20, 2024, Pierz, Minnesota BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms Upstream Ranch Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh Schiefelbein Farms Wasem Red Angus Raven Angus Krebs Ranch Yon Family Farms Chestnut Angus Eichacker Simmentals & JK Angus Windy Creek Cattle Company Pedersen Broken Heart Ranch Mar Mac Farms Warner Beef Genetics Arda Farms & Freeway Angus Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus Fast - Dohrmann - Strommen RBM Livestock Weber Land & Cattle Sundsbak Farms Hidden Angus Wheatland Cattle Company Miller Angus Farms L 83 Ranch U2 Ranch Vollmer Angus Ranch A & B Cattle Carter Angus Farms   FEATURING Cody Jorgensen Jorgensen Land & Cattle https://jorgensenfarms.com/ @JorLandCat   Lane Giess DLCC Ranch https://www.dlccranch.com/ @DLCCRanch   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos   Questions & Concerns From The Field? We are proud of how we’ve followed this principle with – whole herd reporting, data collection on every animal born, strict AI regimes, ultrasound data collection, and new and novel data. These practices produce “honest cattle, that give you real results.” How DLCC Ranch Breeds Cattle We believe in crossbreeding and the effects it brings our customers. South Devon cattle provide flexibility along with many desired economically relevant traits: Outcross English Genetics Feed Efficient Hybrids Black-hided Bulls with Heavy Muscling Red Bulls with a Balanced Genetic Profile   South Devon History South Devon cattle, while less prevalent than in the past, first arrived in the United States in 1969 and then again in 1974. Demonstrating remarkable adaptability to diverse climates, this breed has gained a solid foothold on five continents. Wherever introduced, South Devons have earned acclaim for their impressive production capabilities and economic viability. Both red and black varieties of South Devons are now widely accessible across the globe.   Poundmaker & Navigator Cattle The DLCC Ranch from Pierz, Minnesota has focused on raising premier South Devon, Poundmaker and Navigator cattle that fit the goals of the commercial cowman.  The Poundmaker is a designed composite made up of South Devon and Angus breeds. Black or Red Angus qualify as the Angus influence.  A Navigator is a designed composite made up of South Devon and Continental breeds.   The DLCC Ranch is located near Pierz, Minnesota, and has been owned and operated since 1980 by Dar and Lynn Giess, with their grown children. The infection, only the second human case of H5N1 ever recorded in the country, is worrying public health experts who for decades have cautioned that avian flu could pose a serious threat. The case is the only one state and federal officials have identified, and there is no evidence that it is being spread among humans. The illness is mild and the worker is expected to recover, said two people familiar with the matter. While there have been confirmed avian flu fatalities in other parts of the world, the U.S. has only ever recorded a handful of mild cases, according to the CDC. The new human case follows recent cow infections in Texas, Idaho, Michigan and New Mexico that have raised alarm among public health experts who worry the virus’ spread to mammals could make it easier for the virus to infect humans. The CDC, FDA and U.S. Department of Agriculture said the virus was found in a Michigan dairy herd that had recently received cows from herds in Texas. The USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories said the Michigan strain is very similar to the cow infections in Texas and Kansas, which appear to have come from wild birds.   2024 Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour The 2024 Stockmanship and Stewardship Tour is getting ready to hit the road.  Locations include Richfield, Utah; Lancaster, Wisconsin; Fresno, California; and Hamburg, New York.  You can head to www.stockmanshipandstewardship.org for additional information.   ADM Animal Nutrition Recalls Select Feeds ADM Animal Nutrition is recalling select feed products that may contain elevated levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and/or chloride. Ron DeSantis wants to keep lab-grown meat out of Florida.  Over the last several months, Florida legislators have been quietly working to ban — and criminalize — the production and sale of cell-cultivated meat across the state, via the introduction of two bills, House Bill 1071 and Senate Bill 1084. On February 6, the state's House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 1084, which now sits on DeSantis' desk awaiting a signature. And if his previous comments are any indication, he will be pulling out his pen soon.  "I know the Legislature is doing a bill to try to protect our meat," DeSantis said in February while visiting the South Florida State College Hardee Campus, "You need meat, and we're going to have meat in Florida." DeSantis added, "We're not going to have fake meat. That doesn't work." Cell-cultivated meat, to be clear, differs from traditional veggie burgers and meat alternatives like Impossible Burgers. As the Congressional Research Service (CRS) defines, Cell-cultivated meat "is developed in a lab, grown from a sample of animal cells that does not require the slaughter of animals." The development of cell-cultivated meat, the CRS explained, happens in five steps: the biopsy of animal cells, cell banking, cell growth, harvesting, and food processing. It's an industry that has heavy oversight in the U.S. by both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  As the CRS noted, there are about 150 companies around the world involved in the cell-cultivated meat industry, 43 of which are based in the U.S. Of those 43, just two companies, Good Meat and Upside Food, have FDA approval in the U.S. While it's still a relatively small industry, it's one with major financial backing. According to the CRS, some $3 billion has been invested in its growth via private capital, and an additional $5 million has been issued via the National Science Foundation in research grants, along with an additional $12 million in grants by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Florida, however, isn't alone in its pursuit to block the production and sale of this type of meat. As Fast Company reported, Tennessee is considering a similar bill that would impose a $1 million fine for selling cultivated meat. Alabama also passed a bill to ban the sale and manufacturing of it, making it a Class C felony. This means that if you're caught selling cell-cultivated meat there, you could wind up in prison for up to 10 years. And, as Food Dive reported, Texas also implemented legislation around how cultivated meat can be labeled and marketed.  More from this article can be found HERE. Ranchers Urge BLM To Incorporate Latest Science In New Sage Grouse Plans The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) and Public Lands Council (PLC) responded to the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) release of the updated greater sage grouse management plans. These plans will shape public land use across 10 different states and tens of millions of Western acres. After completing revisions to the plans in 2015 and again in 2019, the agency is currently amending 77 separate land use plans across the West, and could potentially designate millions of acres as new Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs). Despite this incredibly expansive scope, the BLM provided only 90 days to comment on the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and only 60 days to comment on proposed Areas of Critical Environmental Concern. Here is the background.  The sage grouse habitat has been declining across the West due to a variety of factors including catastrophic wildfires, urban development, and the spread of invasive grasses. As a result, more than half of the remaining prime sage grouse habitat exists on BLM acres. The pressures on sage grouse habitat vary from state to state, from ecosystem to ecosystem, and sometimes from county to county. One-size-fits-all conservation strategies are ineffective for this species. Habitat management must be tailored to local needs in order to achieve the best results for the bird. The expertise of local stakeholders, like federal grazing permittees, will be crucial for conserving the species. The Public Lands Council President and Colorado federal grazing permittee, Mark Roeber said years of research, including a very recent and comprehensive 10-year study, support the fact that managed livestock grazing is compatible and can actually benefit the bird. He went on to say the agency must look at the science, and leverage livestock grazing as a tool for strengthening the sagebrush steppe, preventing wildfire, and conserving this iconic species.” For Additional details check out the full article HERE   UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS CHAROLAIS HEREFORD GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS   Miller Angus Farms: March 25, 2024, Watertown, South Dakota L 83 Ranch: March 26, 2024, Mandan, ND Vollmer Angus Ranch: April 2, 2024, Wing, North Dakota A & B Cattle:  April 4, 2024, Bassett, Nebraska Montgomery Ranch: April 14, 2024, Carrington, North Dakota Jorgensen Farms:  April 15, 2024, Ideal, South Dakota DLCC Ranch:  April 20, 2024, Pierz, Minnesota BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms Upstream Ranch Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh Schiefelbein Farms Wasem Red Angus Raven Angus Krebs Ranch Yon Family Farms Chestnut Angus Eichacker Simmentals & JK Angus Windy Creek Cattle Company Pedersen Broken Heart Ranch Mar Mac Farms Warner Beef Genetics Arda Farms & Freeway Angus Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus Fast - Dohrmann - Strommen RBM Livestock Weber Land & Cattle Sundsbak Farms Hidden Angus Wheatland Cattle Company   FEATURING Derek Thompson NextGen Cattle Company https://www.nextgencattle.com/ @nextgencattle   Bryce Kelley Ritchey Livestock ID https://ritcheytags.com/ @RitcheyLivestockID   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      John Fischer Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange, Inc. http://www.gostockmens.com/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100095025190101&sk=photos https://www.cattleusa.com/   Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos   Questions & Concerns From The Field? There are five active wildfires across the region, according to Texas A&M Forest Service. The largest of those is the Smokehouse Creek Fire in Hutchinson County, which alone has burned nearly 1.1 million acres and is the largest wildfire ever recorded in the state. Weather conditions across the state have made battling the blazes difficult. For days, the area has seen favorable fire weather – warmer temperatures, dry air, and strong winds – however cold fronts did pass through the area, bringing cooler temperatures that helped minimize wildfire impact. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the fires have left exceptional damage, saying much of the affected areas are "completely gone" with "nothing left but ashes on the ground."  Governor Abbott went on to say early assessments show that up to 500 structures have been destroyed adding that they will not know the true extent until later.   Farmers and ranchers have suffered major losses. Officials said the fires have left "dead animals everywhere," with estimates that thousands of cattle – a vital industry in the region – will have died by the end of the disaster. Many in the agricultural community have rushed to help, offering land and free medication and labor to try and save animals.    Researchers have already found that Texas' fire season has already grown by two months, and the season is only expected to undergo "lengthening and intensifying" as temperatures rise and extreme weather conditions such as drought and strong winds worsen.   Many organizations have established themselves as collection points for funds from those who wish to help aid producers.  If you want to donate, reach out to the Working Ranch Cowboys Association, The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and the Texas Farm Bureau just to name a few.    Industry Blasts USDA’s Final PSA Rule The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the finalization of Inclusive Competition and Market Integrity Under the Packers and Stockyards Act. The final rule will be effective 60 days following publication in the Federal Register.   The final rule Inclusive Competition and Market Integrity Under the Packers and Stockyards Act establishes clearer, more effective standards under the Packers and Stockyards Act for prohibited practices relating to discrimination, retaliation, and deception in contracting. This will help producers and growers who have suffered from increasingly consolidated markets over the last 30 years by enhancing market integrity and ensuring fair access to economic opportunities.  For a more detailed explanation of this finalization, head to our show notes for this episode at ranch it up show dot com.   Detailed Planning Necessary To Weather Fluctuations In Interest Rates Agriculture banker Lance Vilhauer says interest rates are at the top of everyone’s mind. He says they are at the highest they’ve been since 2006-2007. The needs of each ag operation are different as we deal with those who are beginning farmers to the well-established. The higher interest rates are affecting the short-term money or operating loans the most, but it’s not only the interest that has gone up. A big question is what will the interest rate be when signing those loan papers. The change in a percentage point can have a big impact when dealing with the sums of money needed to plant crops or purchase and raise cattle. He went on to say remember back to 2014-2016 when there was a 50 percent retracement or drop in feeder cattle prices?  It can happen again, and that’s why bankers urge caution. With so much more capital involved, swings in the market can quickly impact an operation. USDA’s Livestock Risk Protection Insurance or LRP and Weaned Calf Risk Protection Insurance help shield producers from potential losses. Producers should be aware these two programs are not FDIC insured products.  Vilhauer said the key to success in any operation when dealing with your financial professionals is communication.   UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS CHAROLAIS HEREFORD GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS Fast - Dohrmann - Strommen:  March 9, 2024, Mandan, North Dakota RBM Livestock: March 10, 2024, Florence, South Dakota Weber Land & Cattle:  March 12, 2024, Lake Benton, Minnesota Sundsbak Farms: March 16, 2024, Des Lacs, North Dakota Hidden Angus: March 17, 2024, Sebeka, Minnesota L 83 Ranch: March 26, 2024, Mandan, ND Vollmer Angus Ranch: April 2, 2024, Wing, North Dakota   BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms Upstream Ranch Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh Schiefelbein Farms Wasem Red Angus Raven Angus Krebs Ranch Yon Family Farms Chestnut Angus Eichacker Simmentals & JK Angus Windy Creek Cattle Company Pedersen Broken Heart Ranch Mar Mac Farms Warner Beef Genetics Arda Farms & Freeway Angus Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus Fast - Dohrmann - Strommen RBM Livestock FEATURING Joel Wicker Arrowquip https://arrowquip.com/ @arrowquip https://www.merck-animal-health-usa.com/ @merckanimalhealth   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos Questions & Concerns From The Field? More simply stated, vaccines are intended to be used to prevent disease and generally do so through establishing and maintaining relatively high levels of circulating antibody titers. Because antibody titers wane over time, it is important that vaccines be administered and readministered (often referred to as "boostered") at the times necessary to result in antibody coverage throughout expected or potential exposure to disease-causing pathogens. It is critically important to recognize that vaccines are intended to be preventive tools, and the efficacy of any tool can be impacted by how it is used. Because vaccines are biological products, they are often susceptible to environmental abuse and exposure to conditions outside of certain optimal ranges. As such, vaccines should be stored, handled, and administered in ways that are described on the label using techniques that protect product efficacy. The product label contains the information necessary to ensure that product storage, handling, and administration practices do not limit or negate product efficacy. Deviations from such instructions may result in decreased product efficacy. In general, most vaccines should be refrigerated, but not frozen, and should remain within the desired refrigerated temperature range throughout storage, transportation, and up to the time of administration. The most common causes of decreased efficacy are storage, transportation, and handling abuse. Examples include not transporting vaccines in coolers, not storing vaccines in coolers on working days, and storing vaccines in refrigerators that do not maintain temperature within the necessary range. Vaccines that will be stored for extended periods of time should be stored only in refrigerators that have been verified to maintain the correct temperature range. Data-logging thermometers are an inexpensive but valuable investment. Vaccines, including vaccine vials and loaded syringes, should also be protected from direct exposure to sunlight. In addition, vaccines that have been exposed to the environment by puncturing the seal with a needle should not be stored and reused. If a needle has been inserted into the vial, the vaccine should be used during that working event, and any unused contents discarded per label directions. Storing previously opened vaccines allows for the potential growth of harmful microorganisms, and thus should be avoided in order to minimize the risk of unintentionally causing an adverse reaction or health event. Some vaccines require reconstitution by adding diluent to a dehydrated powder. All vaccines require mixing or agitating before administration. Mix vaccines gently by slowly swirling and inverting unless the label specifies otherwise. If reconstitution is required, reconstitute and mix only the amount of vaccine that will be used within an hour or less. Do not mix the entire day's allotment of vaccine at the beginning of a working event. It is good practice to reconstitute and mix only a single bottle of vaccine at a time. Disposable syringes and needles should be discarded after each use. Repeatable, repeater, or "pistol-grip" style syringes should be cleaned after each use. Do not use soap, cleaning agents, or chemical disinfectants to clean reusable syringes. Rather, flush them repeatedly with hot water. Water should be boiled and allowed to cool slightly before repeatedly filling and emptying the syringe. Transfer needles should be boiled in water, then allowed to dry before storage and eventual reuse. Syringe lubricants are not recommended because they represent a potential risk to product efficacy through interaction with the active components of the vaccine. Syringe lubricants are also unnecessary because the initial draw of a vaccine into the syringe provides adequate lubrication. Syringe O-rings should be replaced as necessary, and extras should be kept on hand so that they are available when needed. This will help to minimize the risk of a syringe failure. Similarly, vaccine efficacy may be limited by the ability of the animal's immune system to adequately respond to the vaccine. There are a number of animal-related factors that may influence vaccine efficacy. Of these, nutrition and environmental stressors are the most common. Both nutrient deficiencies and toxicities can impair immune function and, as a result, influence an individual animal's response to a vaccine. Trace mineral, protein, and energy deficiencies are the most common nutrition-related issues that limit vaccine efficacy. Energy deficiencies are generally easy to identify through low levels of animal performance, low body condition, and general unthriftiness. Trace mineral and protein deficiencies are often more difficult to visually identify. Trace mineral deficiencies, however, are easy to correct through supplementing with minerals or including trace mineral sources at adequate (but not excessive) levels in a complete ration. Consumption of mycotoxins, other toxins, or other antinutritional factors may also impact vaccine efficacy. In addition, pre existing disease, heavy parasite loads, heat stress, and cold stress are all conditions that may also influence the animal's immune system and as a result, its ability to fully respond to a vaccine. Although certain vaccinations are highlighted in this chapter, their mention should be considered a general rule of thumb. Their necessity for a given herd health program, or the lack thereof, may be subject to interpretation or opinion. The herd veterinarian is best positioned to provide direct recommendations on vaccination programs, including which components should be considered essential, and their optimum timing of administration. Generally speaking, modified live virus (MLV) vaccines typically do not require revaccination to result in an effective antibody response. Killed virus (KV) vaccines, or combined KV and MLV vaccines, generally do require a revaccination (or booster) to result in an effective vaccination as defined by antibody response. Vaccines that require revaccination should be readministered within the period of time described on the product label. Vaccines that do not require revaccination should be administered at or near the time of weaning. Nonetheless, the product label and herd veterinarian should determine if and when revaccination is necessary to result in an effective antibody response. A strong, comprehensive beef cattle vaccination program begins with implementation at the cow-calf level. From a life cycle standpoint, preweaning calfhood vaccinations are the greatest opportunity to initiate a comprehensive and effective vaccination program. Timing of preweaning vaccinations generally coincides with other working events, such as branding, pre breeding vaccinations of the cow herd, or bull turnout. Vaccinating calves at this time will help to minimize the risk of preweaning disease and will better prepare them to withstand the stress of weaning. Calfhood vaccination programs should at minimum include vaccination against various clostridial and viral respiratory diseases. Common essential components of calfhood viral respiratory disease vaccines include: bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) types I and II infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) parainfluenza type-3 (PI-3) In addition, clostridial disease vaccinations commonly include coverage against the following: Clostridium chauvoei C haemolyticum C novyi C perfringens types C & D C septicum and may also include C sordelli and/or C tetani. Some calfhood vaccination programs may also include vaccination against bacteria such as Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida, which cause bovine respiratory disease (BRD). It is important to recognize that this is not a comprehensive list, and spe
We share tips on how to manage your cull cows and bulls to maximize your dollars.  Cultivated and lab grown meat hit the news as more and more states push to shut down the selling of lab grown meat.  We have market reports, news you need to hear, horse sale updates and lots more all wrapped into this episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 173 DETAILS Up to 20 percent of a producer's income can come from the marketing of cull cows and bulls.  But we need to manage them a certain way to maximize the profit potential, especially with markets being as high as they are.  Michaela Clowser, The Director of Producer Education from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association joins us to introduce the Right Way, Right Time program. Alabama has become the latest U.S. state to take legislative action against cultivated meat, with the Senate passing a bill to ban these proteins.  The bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where it could become law.  Many other states are trying to pass such legislation.   Meat sales have been strong thus far in 2024 as beef margins shrink for the packer.  We have all the details.   RIGHT WAY, RIGHT TIME For cattle producers across the country, whether beef or dairy, cull cattle are part of doing business. Animals age, they no longer breed back, and their health deteriorates. Incorporating culling decision guidelines into an operation’s best management practices benefits both animal welfare as well as the producer’s bottom line. Animal well-being must be considered in every decision made throughout the animal’s life. Cull cattle, while being removed from the herd, are an untapped market for producers. It’s estimated that sales of market cows and bulls contribute up to 20% of operational gross revenue for beef operations.1 According to Derrell Peel with Oklahoma State University, “It is possible to increase the value of cull cows by 25 to 45 percent or more by improving cull cow management and marketing.” According to the 2022 National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA), the market cow and bull sector provides an alternative product and a secondary value to animals once their original purpose is no longer suitable. When it comes to product fabrication, market cows and bulls are typically associated with ground beef production. However, over time, the industry has realized that some market cows and bulls have the potential to yield valuable primals to be fabricated and sold as retail cuts and to the restaurant trade. Even though cull animals are often viewed as a loss, with effective planning, these animals can be a significant source of revenue and should not be overlooked. In essence, cull cattle are market cattle. This document addresses key problem areas, provides strategies for making timely culling decisions, and is designed to help producers examine the opportunity to capture more value through effective management regarding cull cattle. COW COUNTRY NEWS Alabama has become the latest US state to take legislative action against cultivated meat, with the Senate passing a bill to ban these proteins. The bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where it could become law. Senators in Alabama have passed a bill to ban cultivated meat from being sold. Sponsored by Senator Jack Williams, Senate Bill 23 makes it a Class C felony to manufacture, sell or distribute cultivated meat in the southern state. If you’re the owner of a restaurant hoping to offer cultivated meat to patrons, you could be convicted and your establishment could have its food safety permit suspended or even revoked. Alabama is far from the only state hoping to limit the cultivated meat sector. Florida has introduced two bills hoping to ban the production, sale, holding and distribution of cultured meat within the state. One of them suggests imposing criminal penalties – including facing misdemeanors of the second degree, fines of $500 to $1,000, and license suspensions or stop-sale orders – on anyone violating these rules. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill requiring clear labelling of plant-based and cultivated meat, seafood and egg products, while Nebraska’s Real MEAT Act would mandate the word “imitation” on alternative protein if passed. Policymakers in Tennessee are making their case for a $1M fine as part of its proposal to outlaw cultured meat. An Arizona House representative drafted HB 2244, a bill that would make it illegal to “intentionally misbranded or misrepresent” an alternative meat product as meat, while David Marshall went a step further with HB 2121, attempting to ban the sale or production of cultured meat. On similar grounds, Wisconsin State Assembly representative Peter Schmidt proposed two bills against alternative protein, one of which put restrictions on the labelling of cultivated meat. In Iowa, a state senate subcommittee unanimously advanced a bill that would require labels on what the proposal calls “manufactured meat” to outline the sources of the products. Just last month, senators Mike Rounds and Jon Tester proposed a federal bill to ban these proteins in school meals.  Strong Start To The Year For Meat Sales In January 2024, beleaguered consumers received some good news with the USDA predicting a slight reduction in grocery prices in 2024. Additionally, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization announced that its food price index is at the lowest level in three years. However, rising labor and other operational costs have been eroding margins and the USDA expects restaurant prices to continue their fourth-quarter increase in 2024. January restaurant engagement was flat, with 80% of consumers having dined at restaurants or ordered takeout or delivery, according to the Circana survey of primary grocery shoppers. The home-cooked share of meals also continued to average around 78% to 80% for most households. When shopping for groceries, the survey found that 81% of consumers applied one or more money-saving measures in January, led by looking for sales promotions (53% of households), cutting back on non-essentials (40%) and looking for coupons (33%). Beef Margins Shrink For Packers Beef and pork packer margins have been seeing a decline as of late.  Beef packers experienced a decline in margins by as much as $49 per head, resulting in a loss of as much as $70 per head.  Annual projections for 2024 show an improvement in packer margins compared to the current week, with indications of a slightly better outlook for packers in the long term.     UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS CHAROLAIS HEREFORD GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS Chestnut Angus Farm: February 25, 2024, Pipestone, Minnesota Eichacker Simmentals: March 1, 2024, Salem, South Dakota Mason Angus & SimAngus: March 2, 2024, Broken Bow, Nebraska Pederson Broken Heart Ranch: March 6, 2024, Firesteel, South Dakota Mar Mac Farms: March 6, 2024, Brandon, Manitoba Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus: March 8, 2024, Beach, North Dakota RBM Livestock: March 10, 2024, Florence, South Dakota Sundsbak Farms: March 16, 2024, Des Lacs, North Dakota Hidden Angus: March 17, 2024, Sebeka, Minnesota Vollmer Angus Ranch: April 2, 2024, Wing, North Dakota BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Frey Angus Ranch Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms FEATURING Michaela Clowser Director of Producer Education National Cattlemen's Beef Association https://www.ncba.org/ @BeefUSA   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos Questions & Concerns From The Field? Quang Nguyen, who says the FDA's labeling requirements for cultivated meat are "not enough" to prevent consumer confusion. A second Arizona House bill, proposed by Rep. David Marshall, was set to be discussed on Monday, but Rep. Marshall withdrew the measure from consideration while he worked on amendments. That bill would institute a total ban on production and sale of cultivated meat in the state. House Bill 2244 will now be brought before the entire House for approval.   Cultivated Meat Flagged As Threat To Genetic IP Meating Place says that although animal proteins cultivated outside the animal itself are far from being readily available to consumers, players in the animal ag industry are looking at the horizon and see a potential threat to the decades of investment in improved livestock genetics.   “What can potentially happen is [cultivated meat] companies can isolate cell lines from animals, which they then will use to grow their lab-grown meat products and basically piggyback on all of the work that these seedstock producers have done,” said Michael Gonda, livestock genetics professor at South Dakota State University, in an interview with AgWeek.   As yet, no mechanism has been drawn up for compensating producers for the investment in their genetic lines.   “All these companies need is a handful of animals to collect these cell lines from and so there are not a lot of protections there for [the] producers,” Gonda said.   “It’s probably two, three, four years down the road, but the rules need to be made now because if we wait that long, we are already going to be behind,” Todd Wilkinson, president of National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and cattle producer from De Smet, S.D., told AgWeek. PRAIRIE HILLS GELBVIEH Prairie Hills Gelbvieh was started in 1985 by Galen and Marcia Sickler with the purchase of two heifers from the Black Hills Stock Show. Later that spring more heifers were purchased from Taucks Gelbvieh and cows from Weber Gelbvieh. We have always tried to have a combination of performance with style. With that in mind DBC Grizzly Bear was purchased in Denver. He was one of the first polled show bulls in the breed with high performance. Later TAU Issac was added to the herd bull battery. He became a trait leader in yearling and weaning weight.   Over the years, many of our goals and selections have remained the same with some changes being made to fit our environment and the changes in the beef industry. We still select for easy fleshing, thick cattle that are structurally sound and can adapt to our dry range conditions. With the fluctuations in the cattle market, only 1 constant remains – pounds pay! Performance is a must, but on a moderate framed animal. These are the traits that give us the type of cattle we are raising today. Herd bulls like RWG Exact Combination 7409, MCCA Gunner 947G, PHG Paycheck C24, MDR N.H. Blackout 7412E, BLB Grinder 39G, DVE Davidson Howard 3E, and PHG Hamilton H10 are giving us the type of calves that come easy, yet wean off over 800 pounds. In 2007 we welcomed our son Klint and his wife Maralee Sickler to the ranch. Their purchase of the original homestead has allowed us to expand the cow herd and take our program to the next level. We pride ourselves on producing cattle that meet the needs of commercial cattlemen and seedstock producers, while providing outcross genetics in an eye appealing package. COW COUNTRY NEWS USDA Launches Remote Grading Pilot For Beef According to Beef Magazine, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a pilot program to allow more cattle producers and meat processors to access better markets through the USDA's official beef quality grading and certification. The Remote Grading Pilot for Beef, developed by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, matches simple technology with robust data management and program oversight to allow a USDA grader to assess beef carcass characteristics and assign the official quality grade from a remote location, reducing costs and location as barriers to participation in voluntary grading services.   In this pilot, trained plant employees capture specific images of the live animal and beef carcass. These images are submitted electronically to a USDA grader already stationed elsewhere in the U.S., likely located in another rural community, who reviews the images and accompanying plant records and product data, assigns the USDA Quality Grade and applicable carcass certification programs, and communicates the official grade back to the plant to be applied to the carcass. Plants can then use this information in their retail marketing and transmit carcass performance information back to producers.     For the complete article, Click HERE   El Nino Impact Through The Rest Of The Winter A moderate to strong El Nino-driven weather pattern remains in control across the Northern Hemisphere. An unseasonably mild spell of weather through much of the month of December extended across much of the Heartland. However, it was a stormy and excessively wet weather-related setup that impacted much of the eastern states, resulting in flooding in the Northeast and New England. Meanwhile, pockets of drought improvement were noted over the central sections of the Winter Wheat Belt, namely in Kansas. Thus far, however, precipitation during California’s typical wet season has been disappointing. Snow totals across the Sierra Nevada range are running not even half of what they should be for the time of year. The water equivalency of snowpack remains at less than 25% of normal. This is a key parameter in determining runoff prospects and forecasting reservoir levels used in the Central Valley.   For the complete article, Click HERE   UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS Clear Springs Cattle Company: February 9, 2024, Starbuck, Minnesota Prairie Hills Gelbvieh: February 10, 2024, Gladstone, North Dakota Wasem Red Angus: February 15, 2024, Richardton, North Dakota Mason Angus & SimAngus: March 2, 2024, Broken Bow, Nebraska FEATURING Klint Sickler Prairie Hills Gelbvieh https://prairiehillsgelbvieh.com/ @gelbviehbulls   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos Questions & Concerns From The Field? EPISODE 168 DETAILS Everyone has their breed of choice.  For whatever reason and experiences we’ve had, has led many of us picking certain breeds over others.  Today we explore the philosophy and goals around Wasem Red Angus.   Calving season is getting ready to start for many producers and for some others it is still a ways away yet.  Regardless, we need to get a jump on scours and make sure each and every calf that hits the ground has the best chance of survival.  A simple solution… FARMATAN from Imogene Ingredients.   As always we have the latest market reports and recaps from Kirk Donsbach with Stone X Financial, Inc. along with news and updates you need to hear.  It’s all covered on this brand new episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show!   WASEM RED ANGUS The Wasem family started ranching in 2004 in Halliday, North Dakota with a small herd of commercial Red Angus and Simmental cows. They decided to get into the registered Red Angus business and held their first bull sale in 2012.  Each year they keep back the best registered heifers to expand the registered herd and to improve our genetics.  They strive to offer cattle with power and performance through balanced EPD's and phenotype.  Disposition is a must in the herd.  They are proud to be selling Red Angus Bulls in North Dakota. They welcome you out any time to look at cattle. Family Business Here at Wasem Red Angus, we are truly a family operation.  Each one of us has a job on the ranch and work together to make the operation a success.  Chris is in charge of many of the daily tasks, including feeding, planting, and harvesting.  Jolyn works on record-keeping and marketing.  Kacee is the number 2 cook in the house, quickly making her way to the top.  Braelyn is the one who makes us all laugh.  There are many days on the ranch, we need a good laugh!  The girls have been a huge asset working cattle the past few years, they are learning about low-stress livestock handling, as well as becoming good horsemen.  We wouldn't be able to get everything done without the help of family, friends, and neighbors throughout the year and we are grateful for those relationships.  Customer Service Customer service is really important to us. The relationships we build don't end the day of the sale. We stand behind the Red Angus Bulls we sell, and your happiness is important! WHAT CAUSES SCOURS IN BEEF CATTLE/CALVES Clostridia-Enterotoxemia The most common form of Clostridium in cattle is caused by Clostridia perfringens. The gram-positive bacteria are a challenge due to its ability to form spores and lay dormant for long-periods of time. The bacteria reproduce by releasing spores into its environment (soil, feed, manure). The spores can even lay dormant in the animal’s intestine until opportunity presents itself. Infection takes place either through ingestion of spores or through an open wound. The most severe cases happen within the first month of a calf’s life, and can result in sudden death. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Bloody, Mucus Present, Bubbly • Dehydrated • Bloat • Blindness Prevention/Treatment: Prevention can be difficult due to the Clostridia spores being extremely durable and present almost everywhere. Complete cleanout and disinfection between calves is helpful, but not always effective. A good vaccination program will reduce clinical disease. The best method is to develop good gut health and the immune system of the calf. Farmatan has been shown to strengthen the intestinal wall, helping to prevent infection from taking hold. Coccidiosis Cattle are host to numerous species of Coccidia, a single-celled protozoal parasite. Infection and clinical symptoms can happen any time during a calf’s life, with the most severe reaction usually occurring between 3-6 weeks of age. The life-cycle of coccidia requires time to infect the intestine causing destruction of the mucosal and epithelial lining. The oocytes mature outside the host in warm, moist environments before being consumed, causing infection of a new host. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody • Depression • Weight Loss Prevention/Treatment: Prevention of Coccidiosis is possible by keeping young calves separate from older animals, providing clean water and feed, and dry conditions. Isolation of infected animals is key to preventing transmission. Keeping the pen dry is the most important step a farmer/rancher can take in preventing Coccidiosis. Treatment can have a good impact on reducing secondary disease, and speeding up recovery time. Farmatan has been shown to disrupt the reproductive cycle of Coccidia; and may help strengthen the intestinal wall to prevent infection, in both the cow and calf. Coronavirus Bovine Coronavirus is a ubiquitous, envelope-viral disease, causing respiratory and enteric infection. There are many serotypes for this virus, making it difficult to test for, and create a vaccine. Coronavirus can present as either diarrhea and/or respiratory illness; transmitted through nasal discharge and/or feces. Animal reservoirs continue to spread the disease, and make eradication almost impossible. Clinical disease will likely occur between days 10-14, and present for up to 4 days. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery • Nasal Discharge • Coughing Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is difficult due to wild animals transmitting the disease. Keeping wild animals out of animal enclosures is essential. Isolation of infected animals is critical to preventing the spread of Coronavirus. Adequate colostrum intake, along with a good vaccination program will help prevent clinical disease. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmtan’s active ingredient on Coronavirus HERE. Cryptosporidium Cryptosporidium Parvum is a single-celled parasite responsible for causing infection in young calves. The infection takes place within the first four weeks of a calves’ life, afterwards immunity has developed within the calf. The parasite is either passed from the cow or spread through infected water sources. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody, Mucus present • Colic • Depression Prevention/Treatment: Good sanitary conditions, especially clean water is essential in preventing transmission of cryptosporidium. Isolation of sick calves will help reduce the effect on the overall herd. There is some good effect of calves given adequate colostrum, however this is likely helping by reducing other pathogenic loads rather than a direct effect on Cryptosporidium, itself. Farmatan fed prior to calving has been shown to disrupt the life-cycle and reduce transmission from the cow. The direct action of Farmatan on the parasite makes it an excellent choice for treating calves. Learn more about the positive effect of Farmatan’s active ingredient HERE. E. Coli Escherichia Coli is a bacterial infection that affects calves within the first week of their life. The bacteria colonize in the lower intestine and produce a toxin. The toxin causes excessive secretion of fluids. The zoonotic disease has special importance in food safety and human health. Colostrum and natural immunity are often not sufficient in preventing infection in cases of high bacterial concentrations. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Creamy, Yellow • Abdominal Pains • Fever • Vomiting Prevention/Treatment: The best prevention methods for E. Coli include: clean water, dry bedding/environment, isolation of infected animals, and vaccination. Treatment with antibiotics and oral fluids have great benefits in reducing clinical symptoms of the disease. Farmatan has been shown to reduce bacterial load and help prevent infection. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmatan’s active ingredient HERE. Rotavirus Rotavirus in calves is caused by a virus belonging to the Reoviridae family, as a non-enveloped RNA virus. Rotavirus is thought to be the most common cause of neonatal diarrhea in calves. The virus tends to affect calves between the age of 1-day-old up to a month, with most cases presenting within the first week of life. Shedding and reinfection can happen in older calves and cows. Clinical symptoms are rarely present after the first month of life; older animals tend to either be carriers or asymptomatic. The majority of herds have some level present, with transmission likely happening during or shortly after birth. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Pale Yellow, Bloody • Dehydrated • Dull calves • Reluctant to drink Prevention/Treatment: The ideal scenario is to prevent infection through, sanitary facilities (calving barn), outdoor calf housing, and a good vaccination program. Colostrum will provide much needed antibodies, protecting the calf before their immune system is fully developed to combat the disease. Farmatan fed prior to calving can help reduce the pathogen load of the cow, reducing the likelihood of transmission. Farmatan supplemented in the milk has been shown to decrease the virus’ ability to cause infection and clinical disease. The best treatment for calves already presenting clinical disease is to administer oral fluids/electrolytes to rehydrate the calf. Learn more about the positive effect of Farmatan’s active ingredient HERE. Salmonella Salmonella infection of cattle is caused by a variety of species within the family. While the disease is uncommon in cattle with little effect on calf health, it has massive implications for human health and food safety. The bacteria spreads through direct contact or contaminated feed & water. This diseas

EPISODE 167 DETAILS We are constantly working to highlight unique and innovative programs that bring you the very best genetics within their prospective breeds.  Today, we introduce you to Clear Springs Cattle Company and the philosophy behind the Bred For Balance Sale featuring quality Simmental and SimAngus Genetics.   Many parts of the country are being hit by winter weather conditions.  But that has not slowed down the feeder cattle market!  Is there no limit to where these feeder cattle prices can go?  Be bring you a market report from Faith Livestock Auction in Faith, South Dakota; Torrington Livestock in Torrington, Wyoming; and the Joplin Regional Stockyards in Joplin, Missouri.   CLEAR SPRINGS CATTLE COMPANY & THE BRED FOR BALANCE SALE The Wulf Family In 1949, Leonard Wulf moved to Minnesota when he married the love of his life, Vi. There they raised their family and lots of sheep and cattle. Jim was one of 11 children and learned to love cattle from his Dad, which he passed down to his sons. In 2011, Jim, Twyla, Travis and Brady moved south of Starbuck to start their ranch, Clear Springs Cattle Company. This is when the family transitioned from Limousin to Simmental. They then teamed up with Hook Farms to start marketing genetics under the Bred For Balance brand. The Ranch Located on the Glacial Ridge, surrounded by rolling prairie and oak savannas, Clear Springs has a unique landscape for Minnesota. The namesake is the many natural springs they have captured to water the cattle, providing them with some of the cleanest water in the world. Every acre is managed with soil health in mind, from intensive rotation on the pastureland to no till and cover crops practiced on the farmland. The vacation rental house on the ranch allows us to share our beautiful views and rural lifestyle with others. The Herd Grown mainly from the Hook Farms herd, the current CLRS cowherd is "bred for balance". Balance between genotype and physical traits, balance throughout their EPD profiles, and balance within the offering having both maternal and terminal oriented bulls. The latest tools and technology are used to further advance the genetics of the herd as well as good ol' cowboy logic. They strive to graze as long as possible each year and develop seedstock with longevity in mind. The Wulf family, along with their affiliates Highland Acres, Anderson Cattle and Trails End market yearling bulls and select females through the Bred for Balance sale held each February.   BEEF ANTITRUST LITIGATION GETS MORE ENTRIES According to Meating Place, The Big Four beef packing companies face yet another four lawsuits accusing them of conspiring to “fix, raise, stabilize and/or maintain the price of beef” sold to retailers since 2015, according to the documents in filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York last week. The New York cases mirror allegations leveled in lawsuits filed over the last few months in North Carolina and Illinois, and a case filed in 2022 by several quick-service restaurant chains. The Illinois case and those that were filed earlier have been transferred to the Minnesota District Court to be consolidated with other, similar antitrust cases in Multidistrict Litigation. All of those lawsuits resemble previous litigation against beef packers that garnered settlements in the tens of millions of dollars, at the same time that the Department of Justice and Congress scrutinized their practices.  In the most recent New York-based cases, BJ's Wholesale Club Inc., Gordon Food Service Inc. and Glazer Foods Co.,  Quality Supply Chain Co-Op Inc. (QSCC) and Target Corp., all accused Cargill Inc., JBS S.A., National Beef Packing Co. and Tyson Foods Inc. of coordinating or manipulating beef prices to levels they would not have reached without the alleged actions, according to court documents. The separate filings also accuse several operating affiliates of the four processors of participating in the alleged violations of the Sherman Act through “anticompetitive means” concerning the price of boxed and case-ready meat. The four defendants sold approximately 80% of the more than 25 million pounds of fresh and frozen beef sold in the U.S. market in 2018 alone, each of the similar suits claim. The latest lawsuits also all cite efforts by the U.S. Department of Justice and USDA in 2020 to investigate allegations of beef pricing practices among the current defendants going back to at least the beginning of 2015. MERCK ANIMAL HEALTH Optimizing Vaccine Efficacy In Animal Health:  Best Practices & Considerations Vaccines play a crucial role in safeguarding animal health by bolstering their immune systems against various pathogens. Understanding proper storage, handling, and administration of vaccines is essential to ensure their effectiveness. Key Points: 1. Importance of Vaccines: Vaccines are preventive tools designed to prepare an animal's immune system to combat diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, or protozoa.   2. Proper Handling and Storage: Deviations from label instructions regarding storage, transportation, and handling can compromise vaccine efficacy. Vaccines should be stored in refrigerators maintaining optimal temperatures.   3. Factors Affecting Efficacy: Nutritional deficiencies, environmental stressors, and preexisting health conditions can influence an animal's response to vaccination.   4. Administration Best Practices: Proper reconstitution, mixing, and administration techniques are crucial for vaccine effectiveness.   5. Herd Veterinarian Guidance: Tailoring vaccination programs to specific herd needs and consulting with a veterinarian ensures optimal protection.   6. Vaccine Types and Revaccination: Understanding differences between modified live virus (MLV) and killed virus (KV) vaccines and adhering to recommended revaccination schedules are vital.   7. Calfhood Vaccination Programs: Initiating comprehensive vaccination programs early in a calf's life, especially during pre weaning stages, is essential for disease prevention.   8. Essential Components: Commonly included vaccines protect against respiratory diseases and clostridial infections, but specific vaccine decisions should be made with veterinary consultation.   9. Heifer Vaccination: Vaccination programs for replacement heifers should mirror those for mature cows, with consideration for reproductive diseases.   10. Pre Breeding and Pre Calving Vaccinations: Timing and selection of vaccines are critical to ensure adequate immunity transfer and protection for newborn calves.   11. Bull Vaccination: Bulls should receive similar vaccines as the cow herd, with exceptions such as brucellosis vaccination. Effective vaccine utilization requires adherence to proper storage, handling, and administration practices, along with tailored vaccination programs guided by veterinary expertise. By implementing these strategies, livestock producers can enhance animal health and productivity while mitigating disease risks. The designation allows the voluntary “Product of USA” or “Made in the USA” label claim to be used on meat, poultry and egg products only when they come from animals born, raised, slaughtered and processed in the United States. The final rule aims to prohibit misleading U.S. origin labeling in the marketplace and helps ensure that the information that consumers receive about where their food comes from is based on facts. The labels will continue to maintain their voluntary status for use on products and also will be eligible for generic label approval, which removes the need for pre-approval by USDA, but requires manufacturers to maintain documentation to support the claim. Last summer, the country of origin labeling rules (COOL), as they were proposed, covering meat, poultry and egg products, were criticized by the Canadian government and the National Pork Producers Council because they included specific regulations on where the animals were raised, which were not part of earlier versions of the rule. Companies that use the “Made in the USA” claim will need to comply with the final rule by Jan. 1, 2026, but are being encouraged to do so as soon as possible. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Executive Director of Government Affairs Kent Bacus released the following statement on the USDA's finalized rule on the "Product of USA" label by saying, “NCBA has been committed to finding solutions to this problem ever since a producer-led NCBA working group raised the alarm, years ago, that imported beef could be mislabeled as a Product of the USA incorrectly at the end of the supply chain. We appreciate USDA’s effort to address this loophole. During the implementation period, NCBA’s focus will remain on ensuring that these changes result in the opportunity for producer premiums while remaining trade compliant.”   UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS CHAROLAIS HEREFORD GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS Weber Land & Cattle:  March 12, 2024, Lake Benton, Minnesota Sundsbak Farms: March 16, 2024, Des Lacs, North Dakota Hidden Angus: March 17, 2024, Sebeka, Minnesota Wheatland Cattle Company:  March 21, 2024, Bienfait, Saskatchewan, Canada Miller Angus Farms: March 25, 2024, Watertown, South Dakota L 83 Ranch: March 26, 2024, Mandan, ND Vollmer Angus Ranch: April 2, 2024, Wing, North Dakota A & B Cattle:  April 4, 2024, Bassett, Nebraska Montgomery Ranch: April 14, 2024, Carrington, North Dakota Jorgensen Farms:  April 15, 2024, Ideal, South Dakota BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms Upstream Ranch Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh Schiefelbein Farms Wasem Red Angus Raven Angus Krebs Ranch Yon Family Farms Chestnut Angus Eichacker Simmentals & JK Angus Windy Creek Cattle Company Pedersen Broken Heart Ranch Mar Mac Farms Warner Beef Genetics Arda Farms & Freeway Angus Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus Fast - Dohrmann - Strommen RBM Livestock Weber Land & Cattle FEATURING Dr. Tim Parks, D.V.M. WHAT CAUSES SCOURS IN BEEF CATTLE/CALVES Clostridia-Enterotoxemia The most common form of Clostridium in cattle is caused by Clostridium perfringens. This disease is highly regulated by the USDA. The most severe cases of salmonella affect calves between the ages of 7-10 days old. Clinical Signs • Diarrhea - Bloody (flakes of slough tissue), Watery, Mucus present • Lethargic • Fever Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is always the best option: provide clean water, feed, and bedding. EPISODE 161 DETAILS To get our cow herd as efficient as possible, one has to take the guesswork out of the equation.  This can be tough no matter what we do because we are dealing with mother nature.  But we CAN use mother nature and science to find the perfect genetic match for our cows.  The seedstock industry has been using these tools for the past several years and they are available for anyone in the commercial business to use.  No more wasted matings, disappointments and not understanding why we had all the variation come weaning time.  Let’s get prescribed matings and add uniformity to our calf crop.  Marty Ropp with Allied Genetic Resources joins us today for a very in depth conversation.  It is complex but it does not have to be confusing and all these wonderful tools are readily available at our fingertips.  We have the latest market recaps from Kirk Donsbach with Stone X Financial, Inc.  Plus the news and information you have come to rely on each and every week!  As always Tigger & BEC and the Ranch It Up crew dive into the latest agriculture news, rodeo action not to miss, and cover the cattle markets. ALLIED GENETIC RESOURCES The Allied approach combines consistent genetic value improvement with services to reward producers for making better cattle. Allied services are designed primarily for commercial customer success with practical genetic solutions applied to your specific production system needs. The seedstock industry’s only purpose is to drive genetic change in the commercial cattle industry by breeding and developing bulls with balanced traits and bred-in profit drivers that add value at the ranch and beyond. Their efforts and dedication are vital to an industry challenged with producing a product that must excel in varying environments, with differing management practices, balanced with maternal and terminal requirements, all while performing in the feedlot and consistently delivering an enjoyable eating experience for the consumer. Not an easy job to say the least. You’ve worked for years, in some cases for generations, at constant genetic improvement. It would be hard to measure the time and money you’ve invested in genetics to ensure your commercial customers can confidently buy the bulls you produce each year. But that alone is not enough to differentiate you from your competition. In today’s ever-increasingly competitive seedstock business, you’ve got to offer customer service after the sale, including marketing options for your bull customers to capture the value they’ve invested in from your program. That’s where Allied can deliver solutions… Allied values its relationship with Superior Livestock Auction, providing its bull customers with greater access to the nation’s largest buyer base and the risk management of forward contracting. Clint Berry has worked with buyers and sellers of high-quality cattle for more than a decade, building a solid reputation with ranchers and feeders. Along with his growing team of Superior Livestock reps, strategically distributed throughout cattle country, Clint works daily in the market to build the supply and the demand for load lots of cattle, with added value options that deliver profit throughout each segment of the industry. RightMate, Precision Mating Technology, Powered by Top Genomics LLC Genetic providers have had solid tools to assist in making consistent genetic progress for many years. In the past few years improved EPDs, bolstered by the inclusion of genomic evaluation, have been a great step forward to making the potential for progress even greater. Now there is a tested program that offers substantially more rapid improvement and success from your investment in data collection and genomic testing. RightMate generates specific, precision mating options that take full advantage of complementarity genomics between sires and dams plus all of the EPD power created from today’s massive trait databases and it is easy to use. RightMate will absolutely change the trajectory and consistency of your genetic improvement program. Never before has a tool been available to the beef business that drives positive change and reduces variability so quickly. Yes, RightMate technology can also help you create a more consistent calf crop. With the slow nature of improvement, because of the relatively low reproductive rate of cattle vs. other species, you simply can’t afford to make decisions that don’t assure progress. This is especially true for those with extensive embryo programs. The cost of filling recipient females with embryos from matings that could have been much better, is just too high to take chances. Genomically assured recommendations are the key! All of us have had experiences when a mating that looked promising and exciting just didn’t work. There are simply some bulls that should be bred to some females on a genomic basis and others that should not, depending on your breeding objectives and desired outcomes. You choose the bulls you wish to use, and RightMate removes those that are marginal or risky choices on a cow-by-cow basis.  The final product is a list of the best sire choices for each female ranked according to your breeding objectives along with genetic expectations for each mating result.  From that sorted list, you make the call based on your experience and desires for the additional traits that matter to you and your customer’s business. Managing genetic diversity is another feature of our precision mating tool.  For each mating, a “genomic inbreeding” prediction is part of the process and breeding report with appropriate weighting applied to ensure diversity for the future at a level prioritized by the producer.  This tool has great potential for commercial herds as well, where minimizing the negative effects of inbreeding can have significant positive effects on profitability. Since 2019 we have grown to more than 100 customer herds using RightMate and RightChoice technologies with overwhelming success. In 2023 alone we will generate more than 15,000 seedstock mating recommendations and our growing list of commercial customers interested in precision mating is growing quickly as well.  The first females created using RightMate precision mating technology are already weaning their second calf crop and using RightMate for the calf sire decisions. The results are just as we had hoped they would be. Herds with much greater rates of genetic improvement for the traits they prioritize, more uniformity and marketability and ultimately more profit for themselves and their customers. There are currently two RightMate options, but we have customized and blended these options for breeders that wish to. Both options require that raw genotypes are available for Top Genomics to evaluate on every sire and dam in the RightMate or RightMate Plus program. Better. Stronger. Faster. RIGHTMATE 1.  Creates genomic mating suggestions for each female in the cowherd and provides decision making tools to guide you through the list of prescribed sires for each female. 2.  Uses the genotypes of up to 20 sires of your choice. You may use different sire lists for heifers vs. cow matings. RIGHTMATE PLUS 1.  RightMate Plus is designed more for donor or higher impact females. 2.  Females will be test mated to the entire Top Genomic sire database (or by the breed of your choice) and the top choices among the entire list are recommended. 3.  This list of high value sires to choose from with RightMate Plus is large and growing every week. Identifying and taking steps to resolve physical hazards in your operation, including face fly control, may be more effective than pinkeye vaccinations. Offer protection from the sunlight by providing adequately sized shade and allow cattle to graze at night when face flies are not active. Make sure mineral consumption is adequate months before the pinkeye season. Selenium, copper, and zinc are vital for maintaining eye health. Be vigilant and immediately isolate the first case of pinkeye. Seek a veterinary diagnosis. Develop a treatment and prevention plan with input from your veterinarian.   WHAT IS PINKEYE The scientific name for pinkeye is infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). It is a disease of cornea (eye surface) and the conjunctiva (eyelids). IBK is reported as the most common cause of eye disease in all breeding females and calves more than three weeks old. It is second only to calf scours, the most prevalent condition affecting pre-weaned calves (Dewell). According to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the first clinical signs of any eye irritation, including IBK, is often tearing, tear staining, and eyelid squinting. Tearing often increases as the pinkeye progresses. IBK may suddenly appear as an opaque spot on the cornea, making early recognition difficult. Conjunctivitis is sometimes seen but not in every case. Corneal ulceration may occur as pinkeye progresses. Some cases of IBK spontaneously resolve. Others result in severe damage to the cornea and blindness. IBK is costly and labor intense to treat. Suffering cattle have decreased appetite because of pain or decreased vision and the inability to locate food and water. Cattle with scarred or ‘blue’ eyes with prolapsed corneas, or blind cattle have reduced value at the market. ASSOCIATED PINKEYE FACTORS Normal eyes have adequate defense mechanisms to prevent infection and subsequent corneal ulceration. Any form of eye irritation allows pathogens to penetrate the cornea: Physical trauma from aggression between animals, overcrowded bunks, self-feeders; handling during transport; abrasive bedding, grazing close to field margins where thorns, barbed wire and tufts of dry stalks of grass can scratch the cornea; rust/corrosion and the sharp edges from galvanized handling systems and penning; tail switching especially when crowded together under shade Blowing dust and sand, weed seeds/chaff Face flies UV irradiation (bright sunlight) causes cell damage to the conjunctiva and cornea Chemical trauma, i.e. fresh nitrogen on pasture Other IBK associated factors include stress from shipping, processing, and insects which can all be immunosuppressive. Younger cattle are more susceptible to IBK than are older cattle. Cattle with white faces, except Brahman cattle, appear to have a higher incidence of IBK. Mineral deficiencies involving selenium, copper and zinc have been diagnosed in recurrent IBK herd outbreaks. MICROBIAL AGENTS INVOLVED WITH PINKEYE The eye has a limited number of ways to respond to disease or injury; clinical signs look the same for a variety of reasons. Since the 1970’s, Moraxilla bovis is accepted as the most common cause of traditional IBK (‘summer pinkeye’). M. bovis is a gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium with pili that allows them to attach to eye surface. M. bovis produces a toxin and hemolysin which play roles in pathogenicity. M. bovis can be isolated from normal eyes; asymptomatic carriers reside in herds. Other Moraxella species were identified as causing IBK, the first being Moraxilla ovis. Moraxilla bovoculi was next characterized in 2007 using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostics. Since 2007, it has become clear that the vast majority of M. ovis recovered from bovine eyes prior to the ability to identify M. bovoculi would now be reclassified as M. bovoculi. According to the 2010 Iowa State University study conducted by Connor et al, M. bovoculi could be isolated with or without M. bovis from calves with IBK. Moraxella bovoculi and bovis were more frequently recovered from eyes with IBK lesions than unaffected eyes. M. bovoculi is often associated with ‘winter pinkeye’. Winter pinkeye is present year-round and occurs in stabled cattle. It does not appear to need physical trauma, or summer flies and UV light often associated with traditional ‘summer pinkeye’. Carrier animals may exist in the herd, with M. bovoculi residing in eyes, nasal passages, and vaginal tissues. Other bacteria isolated from IBK include Mycoplasma and other respiratory pathogens and Listeria monocytogenes (associated with silage feeding, called ‘silage eye’). Viral infections including IBR, BVD and the herpes virus which causes malignant catarrhal fever may also result in eye lesions. Abnormal growths involving the eye, such as squamous cell carcinoma, may also lead to eye injury. A veterinary exam is needed to accurately diagnose the cause of clinical signs.
