This week we're discussing The Incredibly True Adventure of 2 Girls in Love (1995) directed by Maria Maggenti starring Laurel Holloman (who many will know as Tina in The L Word) and Nicole Ari Parker.  We both LOVED this film and how realistic is it, I guess they weren't joking when they branded it "incredibly true." It's such a comfort film, with the light hearted feel. So, join us, as we discuss new hobbies, Randy Dean being the crush of our 16yr old self and Becca's love for motel scenes. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Instagram @DLDTPodcast for all our updates!!
In this extremely special episode, we asked you if you would record yourself answering a few questions so we could compile them all together for all to hear. We wanted to know about your first queer crush, how it made you feel and if you had any advice that you wish you knew as a young queer person. We’d like to give a special thank you to everyone who took the time to share their personal experiences with us, this may or may not be our favourite podcast we’ve ever created and we can’t wait for you all to see what else we’ve got planned for the future! Let us know what you think about this episode by messaging us on twitter or instagram using the handle @DLDTPODCAST.
In today’s episode, we discuss our favourite scenes, characters and moments that occurred in the two seasons of ‘Feel Good’ that are available to watch on Netflix. It is a semi-autobiographical comedy series starring and co-created by Mae Martin who portrays themself. Other famous phrases include Charlotte Ritchie who plays George and Lisa Kudrow who plays Mae’s mum, Linda. Mae is a comedian and after her gig, George comes up to them and they get on really well.. so well that they move in together almost immediately which comes with its own set of challenges! Feel Good navigates Mae’s addictive behaviours whether that be sex, drugs and wreckless relationships. It is truly a wild ride and a deeply touching one at that; especially when it covers gender and sexuality. Be sure to follow us on @DLDT_Podcast on twitter and instagram and give us your opinion on the show!
NOTE: a trigger warning for this episode as we discuss death and the after life.  Join us for an episode of Heaven on Earth as this week we're discussing the Black Mirror episode San Junipero. From the sci-fi afterlife to the Yorkie chocolate bar "not for girls" slogan. We take a deep dive into time traveling sapphics, and for the first time disagree on whether or not ladies do that!  Be sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter @DLDTPodcast for all our updates!
Saving Face

Saving Face

2021-07-0828:18

In this week’s episode of DLDT podcast, we review Alice Wu’s first feature film is ‘Saving Face’. Wil, played by Michelle Krusiec, is a lesbian who is terrified about telling her widowed mother Hwei-lan, played by Joan Chen, or her extremely traditional grandparents, who all live in the town of Fleming, about her sexuality. However, she is surprised to find out that she's not the only one in her family holding back secrets when she discovers that her 48-year-old mother is pregnant out of wedlock. Unwilling to reveal who the father is, Hwei-lan is kicked out of her parents' home and shunned as a result so therefore, she moves in with Wil, which then puts a strain on Wil's budding relationship with openly gay Vivian, portrayed by Lynn Chen. We discuss different aspects of the film such as how it can be difficult to date when one half is out and the other is still in the closet, the issues we have with coming out and our fondness for the soft relationship between the two characters. Be sure to follow us @DLDTPodcast on Instagram and Twitter for updates!
This week we are chatting with Monica and Joana creators of the Lavender Girls: Coming Out two part documentary. As well as discussing the documentary, from the process of creation and procrastination to deciding a release date, we also discuss LGBTQ representation, coming out and being a queer creative! We hope you enjoy! In today’s podcast, we talk about the film ‘The Half of It’ directed by Alice Wu. The film centres around Ellie Chu, a shy intellectual teenager who keeps on top of the bills at home by writing essays for her fellow students. Albeit being against Paul Munsky’s request at first, due to desperate measures Ellie decides to start writing letters to the girl he fancies, Aster Flores, and making it out like they’re from him. It soon becomes obvious that there’s more to it for Ellie than she originally thought... as she also secretly fancies Aster. Whilst Aster is under the impression that Paul is the author behind the messages, Ellie does everything in her power to ensure that her secret doesn’t get out. However, the jig can’t go on forever and eventually Ellie’s secret crush is rumbled by Paul. We discuss different elements of this film including the themes of teenage romance, the awkwardness felt as a queer teenager when getting changed for PE, how our first crush doesn’t mean they’re intended to be a first love and so much more!
This week we’re discussing The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) directed by Desiree Akhavan. It is an adaption to the 2012 book written by Emily M. Danforth. As Becca says we discussing the miseducation of society while drawing similarities from Jamie Babbit’s satire in But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) Comparing the book and the films visual elements and cutting the internal struggle of guilt, the importance of queer friendships and who do we blame for homophobia? The person themselves or society as a whole. The film brought up a lot for thought for us and new information we didn’t know about, So, join us, as we scream from the top of our lungs WHATS GOING ON? Why icebergs conflict our gay experience and wonder why queer friendships in media are pushed to become relationships.
Be Gay, Do Crime.

Be Gay, Do Crime.

Disclaimer: if you get caught committing a crime due to the title of this episode, we deny all responsibility.. In this week’s episode, we discuss ‘I Care a Lot’ which is a film directed by J Blakeson. In terms of the general plot - I Care A Lot’ is a film centred around a con-artist named Marla Grayson (played by Rosamund Pike) who is publicly recognised as the CEO & Founder of Grayson Guardianships. Marla uses her tact and reputability to persuade the legal system that she needs to be given guardianship over elders despite what their family want for them as she claims they are incapable of looking after themselves. The elderly wards then get taken to Berkshire Oaks Senior Living Facility where they reside until the end of their days. They’re placed under sedation and they don’t have any association with anyone outside of the facility, although many are under the impression that they are being well looked after but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Throughout the podcast, we talk about the highs and lows of the film and how it challenged our pre-conceived expectations. One of us found the film to be okay, whilst the other had some strong words to say about it.. can you guess who? Be sure to keep up with us on social media, our Twitter and Instagram handle is @DLDTPodcast :)
Get your jaunty music at the ready because this week we're discussing the BBC/HBO series Gentleman Jack created by Sally Wainwright.  From our favourite Ann(e) to under-appreciation of Ann Walker's courage. We discuss our favourite scenes, the hill top proposal to bringing your thermometer on holiday. And the risky business of watching with your mum, as well as, how perfect the casting of Suranne Jones as Anne Lister and Sophie Rundle as Ann Walker was.  The fann(e)dom would definitely enjoy Shibden After Dark hosted by Leanne and Mary! they delve into each episode in much more detail than we do in this season 1 chat, so be sure to check them out! Pause for the Pandemic

Pause for the Pandemic

2021-04-1521:37

This week we're taking a little break from talking about queer media, pausing for the pandemic, to discuss where we're at in terms of the podcast and the pandemic.  As you may have noticed we have moved from weekly release to biweekly release of episodes which we explain during the episode.  And how the GREAT PAUSE mentality has kind of passed, now that we're a year into the pandemic. As well as a little impromptu pep talk from us and a small discussion about the impact of COVID19 on mental health. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Instagram @DLDTPodcast for all our updates!! NOTE: Becca's laptop was overheating, we apologise for that background sound. We're working on fixing this issue for future episode.
Welcome to our first bonus episode. Lavender Girls: Coming Out was created by our friends Monica Mills and Joana Borges. Monica has devised a creative interpretation of lesbian cinema, focussing on sapphic presenting films in the 21st century and painted abstract artwork of monumental coming out moments within lesbian cinema - however that may come about. Each piece has a specific time-stamp to go alongside it and sets out to convey the importance of lesbian representation for the LGBTQIA+ community. Monica also takes us along her journey of realising and understanding her sexuality and how that was aided by media representation. We’d like to thank Monica and Joana for allowing us to partake in this project! We cannot wait to welcome them to DLDT Podcast in the future. You can watch Monica and Joana’s new documentary Lavender Girls: Coming Out from today (April 5th!) by going over to @monica_mills and @mojo_stickers over on Instagram or via their a twitter account which is @LAVENDERGIRLS3 where you can also find the Vimeo link to take you to the full documentary.
Bierasure ft Tal

Bierasure ft Tal

2021-04-0127:29

Exciting news - we have our first guest! Neither Molly or Becca felt qualified to talk on the subject of Bierasure in the media and in society as a whole given that neither of us identify as Bisexual. Therefore, we thought what better way to introduce our first guest into the podcast than to have a Bisexual speaker give their thoughts and share personal experiences that they’ve endured in terms of Bierasure in order to highlight the common blindspots when it comes to our everyday language and how it isn’t inclusive enough and to give examples of good and bad Bisexual representation and ways they think the media, society and the LGBTQ+ community can become a more accepting place for Bisexuals.
We are Generation Q

We are Generation Q

2021-03-1837:31

To follow up from last week’s episode we’re discussing the reboot of The L Word; The L Word: Generation Q. Watching the OG show in comparison to the reboot is an amazing indicator of the changing times surrounding the views of sexuality, gender and even the development of technology as a whole. We revisit Becca’s original predictions from the previous episode (so be sure to check that out.) We discuss the storylines we loved and the storylines we didn’t, the plot holes, our favourite of the new characters, our hopes and predictions for season 2. And wonder what links they will make back to the OG series this upcoming season. We chat about the chances of Danette (Dani and Bette) becoming canon or whether Gigi and Dani should get together. Who Sophie will go to at the airport? Angie and Jordi’s young love. Why Tina would have left to find herself yet be engaged to someone else less than a year later… Imagine waiting 10 years to find out your endgame ship are no longer together. So, of course, we couldn’t ignore TiBette and their current storyline. Be sure to follow us @DLDTPodcast on Instagram and twitter NOTE: we have decided to move to biweekly release of the podcast in order to continue to provide a high standard podcast for you. Though we say at the end of this episode join us next week, the next episode will be released April 1st 2021.
This week we’re discussing The L Word created by Ilene Chaiken. Most people will have watched The L Word at some point in their life. It follows a group of wlw living in LA, while their talking, laughing, loving, breathing, fighting, fucking, crying, drinking, riding, winning, losing, cheating, kissing, thinking, dreaming because this is the way that they live. We discuss the difference in views between 2004-09 and now, this show is sadly riddled with biphobia and transphobia, and with the reboot we have high hopes they will fix their wrongs. It’s strange to see straight people be the minority, but we have seen no other show like it. *SPOILER ALERT* We discuss the main storylines of each season and our favourite episode/season. As well as our favourite characters of them all. From season 5 supremacy to the disaster that is season 3. At this point Becca hadn’t watched the Gen Q reboot, so she makes her predictions of where she thinks everyone will be in 10 years’ time. Be sure to follow us @DLDTPodcast on Instagram and twitter NOTE: we have decided to move to biweekly release of the podcast in order to continue to provide a high standard podcast for you. Though we say at the end of this episode join us next week, the next episode will be released March 18th 2021.

Loving Annabelle

Loving Annabelle

2021-02-2529:57

CONTENT WARNING: Loving Annabelle has mentions of suicide and self-harm so we touch on this briefly. In this episode, we’re talking all things Catholic school! The 2006 film, Loving Annabelle, directed by Katherine Brooks and starring Erin Kelly and the late Diane Gaidry, explores areas such as teenage rebellion, sexuality, mental health and a forbidden relationship between an English teacher and her new student. Annabelle Tillman arrives at the school as a last resort after being expelled from her two previous ones, she’s set out to cause chaos from the very beginning and isn’t phased by repercussions she may face by disobeying the rules. Miss Simone Bradley is Annabelle’s English teacher, she’s astute, reserved and has quite the dark past which we find out later on in the film. Whilst we both like this film, it’s important to note the problematic aspects in regards to a teacher student relationship and both of us give our thoughts on how our perception changed from watching Loving Annabelle for the first time around the age of 14 in comparison to how we see it now as young adults. Be sure to give us a follow @DLDTPodcast on twitter and instagram for all your podcast updates and ongoings!
Let’s get a little uneducated. Becca grew up Protestant, Molly grew up secular and has a few questions about what the queer experience has been like for Becca and what challenges she’s faced growing up in the church. Becca’s beliefs have been challenged a drastic amount since coming to terms with their sexuality and in this episode, we discuss the different experiences we have had over the years and how that draws back to our religious influence or lack thereof. Be sure to follow us @DLDTPodcast on twitter and instagram for all our updates!
A Secret Love

A Secret Love

2021-02-1127:22

In this week's episode we’re discussing the Netflix documentary A Secret Love (2020) directed by Chris Bolan. This documentary follows Pat Henschel and Terry Donahue, giving us insight to their lives from how they met in 1947 to their careers to now moving into assisted living. They were together for over 65 years before telling anyone. it is a love story  totalling 72 years.  It's a remarkable story having been a secret for such a long time and now the entire world has the potential to know. Be sure to follow us @DLDTPodcast on twitter and instagram for all our updates!
This week we discuss One Day at a Time, season 1-4. It’s a series on Netflix and PopTV that follows the Alverez’s; a Cuban-American family, as they navigate their daily life and the problems that get thrown their way. The show is admirable as it tackles issues such as PTSD, depression, rape culture, queer issues, consent, addiction and many other taboo topics that other shows shy away from. It was significant to both our lives as it was the first time we has seen a queer character of similar ages to us. As Becca said this show makes people feel seen, it makes people feel heard. There’s a character for everyone, there’s a relationship that reminds everyone of a relationship in their own life. It's really personal and realistic which makes for an amazing watch, if you need a laugh... or a cry. For differing reasons we both connected to Elena through being gay and standing up for what she believes in, as well as the relationship with her parents, perhaps, the most hard hitting of the show.   We discuss family taking time to become comfortable with coming out. After all, in the words of Lydia, who are we to judge? Who are we to against the Pope and God? as well as the human nature of focussing on the negatives, focussing on who doesn't accept us rather than who does. And keeping the memory of loved ones alive, through the character of Lydia's late husband, Berto. Be sure to follow us on Instagram and twitter @DLDTPodcast for all our ongoings and updates!
