Common sense and just being a good person will carry you a long way when it comes to knowing how to act and follow proper etiquette and protocol in any environment. But sometimes, there are small things that are less intuitive, that are actually important. And probably more common, is that the people who are “supposed” to know how to act, purposely act poorly, leading newcomers to think that that’s correct. This is extremely common in gyms today, and frankly, it makes them kind of suck. The environment is not welcoming to newcomers, unfamiliar to those who have been around 10+ years, and straight up just doesn’t function well. And poor function plus inefficiencies and rude people giving off bad vibes just legitimately ruins gains - and that’s where I draw the line. This episode probably won’t be the most popular and I understand, however, it should be. There are enough gains and enough weights and machines in the gym for everyone to get after it all together. And we all do better when we support each other and train hard together. That isn’t even feel-good nonsense. When you feel good you train better. And when you train better you improve more. It’s very simple. So share this episode with everyone you know. Let’s bring back old school proper etiquette and decency to gyms and make gyms great again. And let’s get the gains going with it. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. By far the most important factor in your fitness progress is consistency. You can follow all of the best rules and training tips and do everything perfectly - if you only do it once a month, nothing is going to happen. That being said, I think on this podcast I’ve hammered that point home plenty and maybe you are being consistent, yet still not seeing the progress you hope. Well, consistency is extremely important, but it’s not the only thing that matters. If you go to the gym 6 days a week for 6 months and do 1 set of bicep curls with 3lb dumbbells that is amazing consistency and certainly “better than nothing” but it’s also just not going to get you any meaningful or noticeable gains. So that’s what this episode is about: you’ve cracked the consistency piece, and now we need to dial in what you’re doing with that consistent effort so that you finally see the results you’re looking for. Most hacks are trying to shortcut hard work. That is not what this episode is about. I know that you know that you need to be in the gym consistently and putting in hard work. Once we get past that though, there are a few things that can add a few percentage points to your workouts and make everything better. Some of these are things I think everyone must do, and some of them are just little things I’ve picked up along the way that work for me. Take what you need and make it your own!Just always remember that there is no substitute for hard work. If anything, these hacks are small things that actually help you work harder and that’s what gets you better results. Enjoy! The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. Anthony Zorzetto (@mr.zorzetto) is a father, husband and men’s sobriety coach. Anthony has battled addiction, homelessness and hitting rock-bottom and overcome all of it to now having a thriving family, business and leading other men on the same path. The Possible Principle is his 90 day 1-1 coaching program to help men eliminate alcohol from their life. Addiction is a crazy beast. One that more people than many of us realize struggle with, but also one that help is available for. It was a pleasure to chat with Anthony and learn about what addiction really is, learn about some of the early warning signs, some of the steps towards sobriety, and how we can help those in your life who may be heading down the path. I tried to make some connections back to fitness in this chat, but it turns out that fitness is actually an integral part of Anthony’s coaching program. It never ceases to amaze me how impactful improving physical health can be in all aspects of our life. This was a powerful conversation and one that I personally learned a ton from and I’m sure you will too. Maybe this conversation will even save someone’s life. Please share this with anyone you know who is struggling, help is available. To keep up with Anthony, follow him on IG, and visit his website to learn more about The Possible Principle coaching program. Below are some of the free and widely available resources mentioned in the chat as well:Alcoholics Anonymous: https://www.aa.org/Narcotics Anonymous: https://na.org/ Cocaine Anonymous: https://ca.org/ The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. The end of the year is always fun and also almost always a time of year where people gain weight without realizing. Or maybe even while realizing, and thinking it’s inevitable. Fortunately, this episode contains everything you need to know in order to maintain your weight and physique through the holidays. It begins by realizing it’s possible, and then by realizing that maintenance is also progress. It’s not only weight loss, or muscle gain… there is a middle road where you can just cruise. And honestly, this is where you want to spend most of your time anyways. Luckily, it’s also pretty easy when you have a decent plan. In the episode I go over how you can structure your workouts to make this simple, with plenty of adjustments for whatever your situation is. I also talk about my nutrition strategies around the holidays and how I personally use them to come out ahead. Intermittent fasting is big for this, as well as some big boy decision making. Good guide here for the end of the year, put it to use!The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. Chris Tahmazis (@christahmazisfit) is a football performance specialist and strength coach. When his own playing career came to an end he took up coaching and hasn’t looked back. He’s currently opening his first facility in Melbourne to continue training athletes and high performers in an expanded setting. When you get so many good things in your life through sports, it’s only natural to want to pass it along. From staying out of trouble, being involved in your community and generally feeling physically amazing while others feel “old”, the list is endless. Chris has experienced all of these things and only wants to give back now.We discuss how training - and even more specifically, training like an athlete - is the real key to longevity. Chris also lays out a roadmap of how to get there if you’re just getting started (or, re-started). Many people only in their 30’s say they start to feel older, and this just simply isn’t true if you’re training and taking care of your body well. We also discuss why and how to use your fitness data like Whoop bands or Oura rings, simple strategies for improving your nutrition, and why all kids should be involved in sports. To keep up with everything Chris has going on, follow him on IG and Youtube. Check out episodes 231 and 153 with Bryan for more of the background on training, nutrition and healthy lifestyle principles specific to guys 50+. Bryan truly is one of the best in the world at helping these guys transform their body and their life.In this episode we discuss the process towards chasing that elusive 6-pack and truly how important building muscle is. Live and learn, so they say! We all make mistakes and of course there’s nothing wrong with that. The only thing that is a shame is when we don’t learn from our mistakes. And sort of by extension, when we don’t learn from the mistakes of others as well.I made my fair share of mistakes in the gym, things I wasted time on, or tried that didn’t work, or just incorrect approaches to training and fitness, and I want to share them with you so that you can avoid them. These are not minor technique things like doing an exercise with imperfect technique. These are more broad approaches to fitness and training that ended up costing me lots of time, money and most importantly, gains.Hopefully you avoid these, and end up better than me! The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. Sean Hyson (@seanhyson) is a fitness writer and coach of over 20 years. He’s been around some of the absolute top people in the industry for a long time including Arnold Schwarzenegger, many UFC fighters, Hulk Hogan and tons more. He’s written articles and been an editor for Muscle & Fitness, Men’s Health and many other top publications in the industry. Taking all these years of learning and experience and distilling it down to the simplest and most effective tools, methods and lessons for the average person is now Sean’s mission. There is a lot to learn from the pioneers and the people at the absolute peak of fitness - but it’s not always applicable to everyday people. If we can distill their lessons down into the most important parts, that’s when people will win. That’s what we spent this episode doing - discussing the most important, simplest things you should be doing to have long-term fitness success. Sean has a great way of breaking things down and simplifying fitness that I think you will find extremely helpful. To keep up with everything Sean has to offer, check out his website and follow him on IG. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. In this episode I get a few thoughts off my chest regarding some current events and where I think fitness information fits into everything. Fitness is unbelievably important, and sure I am biased, but I truly believe that improving fitness at a population level will do well to make the world a better place. I got into some Q&A sent in from listeners and covered a nice range of topics:How to boost metabolismWhether walking with a weighted vest is worth itA truth about the fitness industry that most people wouldn’t admitChanges in training after turning 30How much alcohol affects fitness progressHow to know if you’re training hard enoughA few biohacking things that actually workAnd any other tangents I took off of answering those! Thanks for listening, I appreciate you more than you know. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. Andy Morgan (@andy_rippedbody) is a training and nutrition coach, author, and founder of Ripped Body. Over his career he’s helped thousands of men achieve life changing transformations and been a prominent voice in the fitness industry for evidence based fitness information. In this episode Andy and I discuss his concept of “physique purgatory” where many guys are stuck. In short: you’re trying all sorts of different things, experimenting, being consistent and yet… not making much progress. Andy works with men like this all the time, and helps them break through. We also discuss Andy’s recent injury and his plans on getting back to full health and strength with his recovery, which is relevant to all of us who will pick up various injuries in life along the way. With winter approaching, Andy gives a great breakdown on how & why to bulk effectively and efficiently so that you actually build some muscle instead of just gaining fat. Jam packed episode with tons of practical takeaways! James Oliver is the founder & CEO of Atlas Bar. What started as a need to fill a nutritional gap while travelling has grown to over $1 million in sales in the highly competitive protein bar market - and for good reason. Atlas Bars are made only with quality ingredients, and have all the protein you need with nothing that you don’t. James and I sat down to discuss the story of how he built Atlas Bar, and this really led into a discussion about the food industry at large. With more ingredients and companies and scientific breakthroughs than ever, layered on top of clever marketing, it’s really tough to know what you’re even buying. Since James runs a food product company, he understands how it all works and really breaks it down for us. This is eye opening, because at the end of the day we can all complain about the food system all we want, but we are in charge. You still get to choose what you purchase and what you don’t. And if you want to make a change, that’s the way to do it. James was very helpful in bringing many aspects of the “system” to light, that are certainly helpful for all your nutrition needs. The Atlas Bars are also great as an on-the-go protein bar and don’t have a ton of extra stuff in them. Really good bar to have in handy if you find yourself constantly low on protein (almost everyone) and always on the go (also almost everyone). Adam Badger (@badgerstrength) is a husband, father, personal trainer & nutrition coach, and host of the Talkin’ Fit Podcast. Adam has a very real-world approach to fitness focusing on building habits and systems rather than quick fixes. One of the biggest differences between “fit” people and those who aren’t, isn’t that fit people never eat pizza, or never skip a workout, or just somehow have a perfectly scheduled life. It’s mostly that fit people have spent years developing habits so that even when life gets in the way, they don’t slip too far and/or it’s easy to get back on track. This is what Adam and I discussed in this episode. Life is always going to throw curveballs - you have to have something to lean on instead of just totally giving up on your fitness every time. Adam gives some super practical and applicable advice to start building simple habits that will have MASSIVE payoffs for your entire life.Fitness is never about overhauling your whole life. It’s about small but consistent incremental steps forward that result in the exact life you want to live. For more check out Adam’s website, follow him on IG, and check out the Talkin’ Fit podcast. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. @atlaspowershrugged is an athlete, coach, husband & father. His focus on using unconventional and “old-time” lifts helps himself and clients build strong, mobile and muscular physiques. He’s the author of Old Time Lifts for Modern Lifters and the Antifragile Diet. Science-based lifting is all the buzz these days but there are many, many reasons to be pretty skeptical about their claims. In this episode we dive into much of it, from the flaws in training philosophy, the new problems that they may create, and the psychological traps that create the gap for these ideas. Humans have been training and getting big, strong and athletic for a very long time. That’s not to say we should never learn new things, but we also shouldn’t be so quick to throw things out that have worked for years and years. This goes for nutrition as well. Hopefully this conversation helps clear the air for you so you can spend your time and effort focusing on things that are legitimately going to move the needle for you in your health and fitness pursuits. Pick up a copy of Old Time Lifts for Modern Lifters here, and the Antifragile Diet here. From his experience at the highest level of fitness, to a near-death experience and autoimmune diagnosis, he coaches people to work WITH their body to transform their health and life in and outside of the gym. Life gets crazy for everyone at various times for all sorts of reasons and to varying degrees. It’s all valid, but it doesn’t mean we just completely drop the ball on our health and fitness every time. Paul is a great example of someone who has navigated some significant health challenges and had to find a way back to being fit and healthy and being able to enjoy life. We discuss Paul’s journey and how he navigates chaotic times. Bryan Krahn (@bryankrahn) is a personal trainer, fitness writer and online physique coach. He recently wrote Max Muscle at 50 for Men’s Health and came back on the podcast to discuss all things training and building muscle over 50. Bryan’s one of the best coaches around, and someone I personally have learned a lot from and looked up to in the industry. So when he speaks, you listen. There are years of wisdom from both a deep understanding of physiology and thousands of hours of coaching real people to build incredible physiques and improve their lives. In this episode we go through everything involved with gaining muscle after 50 - training, nutrition, sleep, lifestyle, medication, health outcomes, and nuggets of wisdom that glue it all together. Even if you’re under 50, many of the same principles apply. Building muscle is building muscle after all, but there are various other considerations to make as we age. It’s never too late to start, but getting started sooner is better than later. As Bryan says, strength and muscle is the key, so build it while you can. To keep up with everything Bryan has going on, check out his website and follow him on IG. In the past few years everybody became obsessed with recovery from their workouts and we now have so many recovery protocols and modalities and somehow people are still tired, beat up, and not recovered. And it’s because we substituted actual rest & recovery for adding in more chores that seem like recovery, when in reality it’s just another list of tasks to complete. Not good. So I decided to record this quick chat about it. Yes, those recovery tools can help and they have their place, but they aren’t going to replace getting actual quality rest, proper programming, and a good night’s sleep. I get into the 3 phases of recovery, and actionable tips on how to optimize and implement all of them. Also, a bit of a reframe on one of the most important aspects of recovery, which is how hard you’re actually training. Enjoy! The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend. Andres Ayesta (@andresayesta) is a Registered Dietitian, Sports Nutritionist, and founder of Planos Nutrition, where he helps men over 30 and busy professionals lose fat, improve energy, and build sustainable habits without restrictive diets or gimmicks. With over 12 years of experience and features in outlets like Forbes, CNN, and Men’s Health, Andres combines science-based strategies with real-world coaching to help people create results they can actually maintain.Andres is in the middle of running an experiment on himself: 1 month of a strictly whole foods diet vs 1 month of a strictly carnivore diet. At the time of recording, he has just finished the whole foods portion and hasn’t yet started the carnivore bit. Andres shares the insights he’s learned from part 1 of this self-experiment, and also takes some guesses on what he thinks will happen switching to carnivore. We discuss the overall approach to healthy, long term nutrition strategies including best practices for losing body fat and keeping it off. At the end of the day, there are lots of things that can work, so long as they follow the basic principles we discuss in this episode. To keep up with everything Andres has going on, follow him on IG and check out his website. The best way to support the podcast is to share the episode with a friend.
