#1: Why Drink Whiskey?

#1: Why Drink Whiskey?

2021-04-3013:42

In this introductory episode, I talk about the show and what you can expect from it, and then spend some time talking about why people typically get involved in the hobby of drinking whiskey. If you're new to whiskey and curious as to why people like it so much, this is for you! If you've been a whiskey lover for a long time and just want to know what this podcast is all about, then this is for you, too!
In this episode, my guest, Justin, learns how to drink whiskey without it burning. This is my favorite tip for people who are trying to acquire the taste of whiskey, so I wanted to walk through it in an episode. Throughout the process, Justin asks many questions that beginners often have about the hobby. In the end, we both go through a review of Rebel Bourbon (AKA Rebel Yell Bourbon).
In this episode, I go through the process that I personally use to taste whiskey. This is the best way that I have found to review a glass of your favorite Bourbon, Scotch, or other whiskey. I also run through some tips and tricks that have helped me pull out more flavors and improve my ability to review whiskey. There are some tips in here that I think even the more experienced whiskey drinkers find helpful, so be sure to listen!
In this review episode, I show my guest, Bryce, one of my favorite tricks for learning how to taste whiskey. We take two different whiskeys and compare them, to see just how large of a range of flavors whiskey can have. Finally, we review both the Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey and the Russell's Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This episode is great for beginners and experienced drinkers alike. Even multiple years into the hobby, I still use this tip often.
How is whiskey made? In this episode, I briefly go over the main types of whiskey (Bourbon, Scotch, Irish Whiskey, Rye Whiskey, and others), which will each be covered in their own upcoming episodes. Then, I walk through the major parts of the distillation process, and discuss the elements that typically have the most impact on a whiskey's flavor.
In this episode, my guest, Zack, and I go through the practice of using flavor note lists/wheels to help improve our reviewing skills. We do a full, three part review of Redbreast 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey, from nose to palate to finish.  Don't forget, if you want to hear about the month's whiskeys before the episodes air so that you can buy them for yourself, send an email with a subject "Email List" to whiskeynoobspodcast@gmail.com!
What is Bourbon? How is Bourbon different from just American Whiskey? What are the kinds of American Whiskey? Why isn't Jack Daniel's the best Bourbon? These are all questions that are answered in this episode of Whiskey Noobs!
In this episode, my guests, Bryce and Autumn, review my favorite beginner bourbon, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. We do a full review, and I walk through the elements of a good beginner bourbon. Finally, we round it out with a quick "Dr. Pepper Tasting" and discuss their thoughts on drinking Buffalo Trace as beginners.
In this episode, I discuss all things scotch whisky. The regions of Scotland, the flavor notes that you can expect from scotch, why it isn't spelled whiskey, and what is necessary to be considered a Scotch whisky.
In this episode, my guests, Will and Tyler of the Viewer Regression Advised Podcast, review two single malt scotches with me. These whiskies are from different regions of Scotland, giving them very different flavor profiles. We get to see the vast difference between a peated Islay Scotch and a Highland Scotch whisky. Finally, we review Glenmorangie 10 year and Laphroaig 10 year single malt scotch whiskies.
In this quick mini-episode, I share a few updates on the Whiskey Noobs Podcast. How it's been going, and what is to come! Thank you all for being awesome listeners! See you next week!   To sign up for the email list, send an email to whiskeynoobspodcast@gmail.com with a subject line of "Email List"
Where did whiskey first start? In this episode, I begin by discussing the first written accounts of whiskey. Then, I talk about Irish Whiskey, and what criteria it has to meet. From Single Pot Still to blended whiskeys, we go over all of the types and subcategories of Irish Whiskey. Finally, I talk about what flavor profiles you can expect from this wonderful category of whiskey.
In this episode, my guest, Zack, and I discuss the differences between top and bottom shelf whiskeys. What differences can you expect in flavor notes, nose, and mouth feel by paying more for your whiskey? Listen to this episode to find out! In the process, we do a full review of the flavor notes of Benchmark 8, Buffalo Trace, and Heaven's Door Tennessee Bourbon.
In this episode, we talk about Canadian and Japanese whisky. This topic rounds off the types of whiskey that we have been going over the past few months. We go into detail about a few of the things that make Canadian and Japanese whiskies unique, and end the episode by discussing the malting process as well as a few notes on the types of whiskey.
In this episode, I go through a full review of Basil Hayden's Rye Whiskey, aged 10 years. If you are considering getting into Rye, this is the episode for you.
In this episode, we start up our very own Whiskey Noobs Infinity Bottle! I explain what an infinity bottle is, and then recap the first 14 episodes of the show as we add the whiskey from each of these episodes to the bottle.
In this episode, my guest, Bryce, and I review Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. As a bit of an experiment, we try smelling the most prominent flavor notes (an actual orange, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract) in order to see if it helps us better pull the flavors from the whiskey. Finally, we conclude by ranking Monkey Shoulder among the other whiskeys that Bryce has had on the show.
In this episode, I answer questions submitted by you, the listeners! If you'd like to have your question answered on the show, either message/comment on the Instagram page, @Whiskey_Noobs, or send an email to whiskeynoobspodcast@gmail.com. Your question will be in a coming episode!   Questions: 1) What is the difference between Irish Single Malt and Single Pot Still Whiskey?   2) If you could only drink one whiskey for the rest of your life, what would it be?   3) What is your favorite Canadian Whisky?   4) What is the purpose of the big ice cubes in whiskey, instead of normal ice?   5) What is your favorite whiskey to make an old fashioned with?
In this episode, my guest, Luke, and I review Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and compare to it's single barrel counterpart. We also discuss what makes single barrel whiskey different from normal whiskey.    P.S. The recording issue has been fixed. Cause: a crappy SD card
