Chet Erwin, CEO of newly formed CherCo joins host Michael Haning. Chet Erwin has over 35 years of experience in starting and expanding successful companies in the energy sector.
Chet began his career as one of the founders of Hanover Compression Company “Hanover” (now Archrock: AROC) where he served as Chief Operating Officer and President of the Operating Board. Highlights during Chet’s tenure:
- Hanover was incorporated in October of 1990, Hanover quickly acquired 3 major compression rental companies in TX and LA;
- Hanover completed its IPO in July 1997 and began trading on the NYSE;
- Hanover went from a 4 person Texas operation in 1990 to over 5,000 worldwide employees by 2001.
Chet co-founded Valerus Compression Services “Valerus” (now AXIP) in August of 2004 where he served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Operating Board. Chet’s second compression venture was equally as impressive as the first, highlights below:
- Chet’s execution and experience at the helm was evident with 2005 revenues increasing 445% from 2004;
- In 2006, Valerus grew revenues another 120% and was quickly becoming a force within the compression space;
- Valerus continued to quickly gain market share and by its fifth full year of business was the second largest gas handling company worldwide.
Michael and Chet have a great conversation about the compression industry.
On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning kicks off a series of interviews talking to blue collar industry experts and sharing some insights related to the labor crisis that has been called the Great Resignation.
Michael talks with Greg Hayne, Chief Innovation Officer at Hayne Coaching Group, an organization that helps commercial roofing contractors build better, more profitable service departments. And how? By teaching them the best practices used by the best service contractors in the country.
Greg has some great insights that apply to any industry, not just commercial roofing. He says a major problem business owners are having is self-inflicted: They aren’t paying a living wage. If you want to attract and retain top talent, you have to show them you care — and that starts with making sure they can take care of their families.
He stresses the fact that if you own a trade company, stop thinking of your company in terms of being plumbers or roofers, and start thinking of your company as a business. Learn how to market to potential labor as well as potential customers.
It’s thoughtful stuff that applies directly to the gas compression industry.

Louis (Bunky) Dussetschleger, Field Technician at K&R Operating LLC, has been in the gas compression industry for over 27 years. He joins host Michael Haning on this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast to discuss the history of the gas industry as seen from Bunky’s eyes out in the field, what the future looks like in the gas industry, and what employers should know about finding, training, and keeping new talent in the industry.
Bunky started in the industry as a young man and, with his background as a mechanic, he was quickly put in a service truck and “booted out in the field,” where he quickly learned he had to prove himself without the help of any of the veterans.
After years of being out in the field, he eventually settled into his current role in the rental compression business, where he turns his hand to any type of work you can think of, from rebuilds to overhauls, on all types of equipment from old school to the most modern.
His experience gives Bunky a clear insight into how the industry works, and how the industry might work better moving forward.

W. Norman Shade, Jr., PE Sr. Consultant & President Emeritus, ACI Services Inc. has been a respected voice in the gas industry for decades. He joins host Michael Haning on part two of this two-part episode of The Gas Compression Podcast. He acknowledges that there are certainly problems in the gas industry, and he spells out some of his ideas on ways these problems can be solved.
Norm also takes a deep dive into emerging technologies, including renewable energy, and takes a balanced look at the pros and cons of these emerging energy solutions, weighing the current challenges with them and discussing with Michael how the problems can be solved.

W. Norman Shade, Jr., PE Sr. Consultant & President Emeritus, ACI Services Inc. is one of the most respected and experienced voices in the gas industry. He joins host Michael Haning on part one of this two-part episode of The Gas Compression Podcast. They discuss the history of the gas industry, both in the U.S. and globally, the state of the industry today, and what the future looks like.
Norm starts at the beginning with the discovery of natural gas, which was considered a waste product at the time until engineers of the day figured out how to harness the energy present to power industrial boilers.
Norm continues through the history of the industry including the ongoing construction of the pipeline system that is vital to the industry in the U.S., the steady increase in gas production and delivery through much of the 20th century, and how the industry nearly died a slow death beginning in the 1970s.
Fortunately, the industry didn’t die, thanks to advancements in hydraulic fracturing, and Norm closes part one by discussing energy projections moving forward including the decline of coal, how natural gas is the safety net for the rise of renewable energy, and the causes and potential solutions to the rolling blackouts occurring recently in states like Texas and California.
