The words tactical, operational and strategic appear in just about every corporate communication. In explaining what Strategic thinking/intelligence is, I want to  clarify the major difference between tactical, operational and strategic  intelligence. As a start, we should note that all the words derive from a military, not business or leadership perspective. Strategic intelligence represents a very important tool and the  discipline of providing continuous, useful intelligence about a  #competitor, #country or individuals. Strategic thinking and #intelligence depends on historical and current  data mixed with creating hypothesis about future developments. Needless to say, any intelligence collected, analysed and  disseminated to decision or policy makers also becomes the subject of  #counterintelligence and planning by competitors as well as being  influenced by events outside of their #control, such as the Covid19  pandemic. For this reason, #strategic intelligence is more hypothesis than  #tactical or operational intelligence. Tactical thinking is more based on  current events (space, time and resources ) for immediate decision  making. How does strategic intelligence and strategic thinking relate to “leaders”? According to (Anon., n.d.), the word ‘Strategy’ comes name from the  Greek word strategos, the name of an Athenian general officer. This is  derived in turn from stratos, ‘an army’ and therefore, ‘I lead’. We are all dependent on portable devices for our work and our social lives.  Using them in public settings, especially airports, planes and trains provides the  perfect opportunity for criminals to access your information – and they  don’t even need your passwords. Recent trips of mine have confirmed how  the best cyber security arrangements count for once employees leave  their taxis and enter airports to get on planes. As restrictions are starting to relax, we are seeing commuting for  both work and personal reasons start to increase again. After two years  of working from home, people are seizing the opportunity for  face-to-face meetings with clients, peers and employees. Working from home has seen its own privacy challenges with more  people using their own networks and devices that are typically outside  the company’s firewall. We saw an increased number of fraudulent  activities from identity theft, hacking accounts and phishing – the list  goes on. The restart of business travel brings with it the privacy challenges of using portable devices on the move. It is important to know the modus operandi for how perpetrators access your information. Information theft usually occurs out of sight. It will happen outside  of your peripheral view. Due to most people’s lack of interest in the  environment around them, for example on a plane, they can be  particularly vulnerable. As soon as businesspeople start traveling, perpetrators have easier  access to you and the information you are carrying.  One method is via  social engineering (malicious activities accomplished through human  interactions) and another is from observing your screen and perhaps  utilising some type of surveillance method (video, imagery,  eavesdropping). I have been asked so many times why I am so disciplined or regimental. I truly never wanted to talk about discipline because reminds me of my childhood and my father enjoyed to #disciplined me. Or comments I often hear include “oh you must learn to be disciplined in the #military”. From my own experience I believe that discipline comes from the home, for one simple reason. As kids, we have role models in front of our eyes 24/7, and those role models are our parents. I will not go into detail about who has better or worse parents, whose parents have more education or whose parents are terrible in raising their own kids, but they are our role models from day 1 of our lives. My parents were typical communist products, working in a factory day after day for miserable pay and living that utopian dream of equality and how a hard day’s work pays off. My dad had barely 4 years of primary school and my mum 8th grade of primary school but what I do remember from my father was: Wake up early, brush your teeth, make your bed and dress yourself.  My father would wake up 4.30 am even he was starting work at 6am and the factory was literally 5 min walk from our unit. Regardless of my parents almost non existing education they told me, “school you must, working you must”.  So I worked over the summer in corn fields, working in different factories to get that grasp of discipline. So yes, despite my parents being two of most sadistic people on the planet, I listened and then I transferred all those teachings of discipline into my daily life, and later in the military. Second, if you don’t bring from your own home an understanding of what discipline is you will need to learn it either through continuous downfalls or you will see that being disciplined gives you something else.  The battle of living reactively versus proactively is a daily struggle of developing the internal thoughts and mindset that each of us implore. Through the course of a day, week, month or year unexpected events take place and we are asked to respond to them in our thoughts and discipline.  Take ownership of your life, cultivate yourself to become more disciplined and then take a note of how this affects your overall life. That something else is called, purpose. The power of communication as a type of #warfare is often undervalued.  You become as big as your thoughts.  The secret to success lies in how you think.  Training yourself to not only follow the narrative you are being fed, but to think on your own… this equips you to succeed. Influencing your ‘enemy’ is a key part of winning any battle. We all love to win. Wouldn’t you agree? After all there can be only one winner. Being able to analyse misinformation has become a critical skill for armies, #businesses and citizens alike.  Do you realise the ability to get creative outweighs what you know?  In other instances, the use of creativity can compensate for a lack of knowledge in a single area. You may remember that prior to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, there was a slogan, “Winning hearts and minds in the war on terrorism” that was used extensively. The slogan is not the weapon in #military terms, it doesn’t cause human fatalities and body injuries. It doesn’t cause human fatalities.  Period. But, #communication, translated into carefully chosen words, along with military might, causes a deep #emotional effect on military personnel and civilians on other side of the front line. Books are one of the few tools available to us which are adapted to situations in our current day life, regardless in what period of time they were written.  There are certain books that meet us in the perfect time of our life that resonate with us more than others.  This year was characterised by change, #adaptability, #persistence and opportunity.  #Books have the biggest impact on your life. So, what has changed? Why do we need inspiration and motivation? What are you striving for short term and long term? It goes without saying that the world we used to know has changed. For good. There is no such thing as going back. In my own experience, I witnessed how one day, I lived in a society called communism.  Born, raised and bred to become a next generation of guardians of #communism and then the following day, I literally fought for #democracy. I went to war by thinking one day when the war is over life will go back as it was before. And guess what? I spent 1800 consecutive days in #combat and things didn’t go back as before. #Life was changed.  #People were changed.  #Goals are changed.  I was changed. So, what did I change for good inside me? I changed my view on life, the world around me, the beauty of being alive, being able to breathe, travel and understand what to do when the world started to change. I must admit that at first, I was not taking time to change me, instead I was trying to change the world to go back. In today’s business and government environment, using intelligence is  vital to make plans for the future and to predict, understand and  spot/isolate threats. Intelligence consists of information, both  tangible or intangible.  These can be anything from blue prints, product  information and client details to pricing and even ideas. A vast amount of money is understandably poured into the IT sector in  order safeguard intellectual property and other information.  Often  there is also an extensive effort directed to social media monitoring to  learn who is who, who says what and to whom. Despite the fact most information resides on clouds, servers and  other forms of digital storage, we still print, make notes, and send  messages, be it electronically or via paper. What most companies and other sectors disregard is the Human  Intelligence factor which also play a very crucial role in the society  we live. We can argue and discuss how life, business and social interactions  were in the Pre-COVID world, however, none of this changes the fact that  the world we know is over and we need to refocus our activity on  positive things. To enable us to continue to go about our daily lives and enjoy  family, health and business, we now have to fully concentrate on things  we can control. From a business perspective, it is about how we can  assist our clients, peers, employees and contractors. We all witnessed in pre-COVID world how many gurus and ‘prophets’  there were seeking to charge you to listen to their success stories.  We  should not be focusing our efforts on them. So, who am I? Who are you? You are true unsung business heroes, true  disciples of success and above all, determined to be on the front foot  of life and business.  I am a businessman who in my early years  experienced the horrors of war and how it effects people. It also proved  to me that I was capable of creating my own destiny. That old way of life and thinking is over, you don’t need prophets,  gurus and high paid executives to tell you how to run your business.  You  now have the full authority and credibility to share your wisdom and  knowledge to others on how to stay afloat. When you wake up in the morning, instead rushing to the internet and  being fed bad news about the virus, crime or natural disasters, do  yourself a favour.  Wake up and say to yourself, “Today will be a great  day” followed by putting on the biggest smile and then ask yourself,  “what do I truly want from life” – after all you may be the only person  who will never lie to you! Resilience it is not something you can learn from a speaker and a book. No. Period. Resilience needs you to have an experience to face yourself.  To overcome fears and anxieties. To be placed in a physical situation where you have to push past limitations, fear, panic. Most importantly in a moment of action you will realise that RESILIENCE IS AN ACT OF COURAGE. Act when you face an adverse situation or obstacle and there is no one who can hold your hand.  No one to remove obstacles and guide you through things.  Just you and you alone. It is upon you.  It is the moment which defines you. It is your internal engine, heart, brain, senses that will determine what you will do next. Draw your courage, face the obstacle, push forward or you will take a step back and let someone else do the job for you. If you believe I was born with courage, No. I was not.  If you believe I was bravest in the war. No. I was not. But what I learned from those events, war, abandonment, being bullied, laughed at was that I have something what others don’t have. Strength-of-character and Courage. By nature, both industrial and economic espionage, are simultaneously  aggressive and defensive. They are aggressive in the sense that steps  are taken to pursue and achieve a competitive advantage over competitors  by utilising methods of operational intelligence gathering, as well as  methods of sabotage and subversion.  Both types of espionage are also  defensive, and this is seen in activities that concentrate on the use of  deception of competitors and/or foreign intelligence services by  utilising methods such as information warfare and counterintelligence  processes. Industrial and economic espionage are considered illegal activities.  However, it would be an inaccurate characterisation to say that most  industrial and economic espionage activities that take place are,  strictly speaking, illegal.  The majority of such activities are  performed using methods that are mainly legal. For example, collecting  information about a competitor or product via open-source information,  friendly discussions with a competitor’s employees, purchases of a  competitor’s product (which are then used to attempt to reverse engineer  its design), or head-hunting key employees in the hope that they can be  enticed into breaking their exit contract with their previous employer. Countries and States will utilise illegal means to conduct  information/intelligence gathering operations regarding the economic  capabilities of other countries, as well as the products of private  entities, so long as doing so is to their benefit and it is deemed an  acceptable risk relative to the potential gains afforded.
