Pluribus has emerged and wow it feels so nice to have another Vince Gilligan show to watch. We're only a couple of episodes in, but I'm loving some of themes especially around how we treat intellectualism, ignorance, and fighting for the friction that is everyday life. 0:00 - Pluribus is here! 0:40 - Nothing like a grumpy lady1:10 - Episode 1 Pluribus recap3:00 - Pluribus episode 2 recap 4:40 - Why is discomfort important 7:00 - AI Alignment and it's roll in putting on the brakes9:15 - Individualism or "pick me" syndrome is not the same as critical thought10:01 - Humanity does not lie in ignorance12:14 - The rise of anti-intellectualism13:50 - The signs of anti intellectualism16:06 - Learned helplessness and the atrophy of AI Referenced links:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6lzvWby9UE- https://www.quantamagazine.org/the-ai-was-fed-sloppy-code-it-turned-into-something-evil-20250813/- https://www.livescience.com/technology/artificial-intelligence/openais-smartest-ai-model-was-explicitly-told-to-shut-down-and-it-refused - https://gizmodo.com/utopia-equals-dystopia-in-pluribus-apple-tvs-latest-sci-fi-standout-2000680460- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKSyWqcKing- https://www.politico.com/video/2016/02/donald-trump-i-love-the-poorly-educated-044575 - https://time.com/7295195/ai-chatgpt-google-learning-school/ Find me elsewhere: Listen to Grumpy Young Lady on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/11FX5G68eYPdSlnrZYq7To?si=d9258268798b4b0aFind me elsewhere: https://linktr.ee/katebrunotts Spotify (Music): https://open.spotify.com/artist/1vV2HAeSNkp97JK2tPpEoN?si=WzRT4xYLTi6uQOG4mn2aiA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/katebrunotts/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@katebrunotts
Massive Attack dares to say something in a performance. What a beautiful thing. Surveillance via Flock cameras, Ring, AI, etc. is kinda spooky. Enjoy!____When you spend your days researching music history, it's tough to track what's happening right now. Fortunately @KateBrunotts from our Most/Least American series has the answers. Oh man Ezra Klein and Kyla Scanlon’s latest chat got me thinking about context collapse surrounding betting and how we relate to it in an economy where attention is the foundation to change. In an age of endless content, perfected social feeds, stimulation at our fingertips and poorly evolved biology, it's easier than ever to be jealous. Or enraged. Or disaffected. You get the idea. Severance, Dead Internet, and the Dehumanization of Corporate Culture I have very much enjoyed Severance season 2 and cannot help but draw parallels to today's dead internet and general class divide based on the ownership versus working class. Lady Gaga's Abracadabra could not have come at a better time. I've been thinking a lot about how what we consume and how we absorb it directly influences how we show up in our communities. So much of the heaviness of today's climate can feel paralyzing but this song is such a beacon of acknowledged hope. One of the greatest paradoxes as an artist is finding the will and way to sustain yourself all while keeping that dream alive. While I do think there's a place for manifestation and unbridled optimism when it comes to art, I see so many folks become discouraged or misguided by a belief that creation in itself will bring them immediate success. Holding a day job isn't about putting your art in the backseat, it's understanding that in order to create to your highest capacity, you have to take care of you first, especially in a generally hostile atmosphere monetarily speaking for the bulk of working artists in today's day and age. The Joshua Citarella interview of Matty Healy on the Doomscroll podcast was particularly delightful to someone who has long loved The 1975 and holds a position of resident doomer. This essay had me pondering quite a bit about who's allowed to create and enjoy art, afford basic securities, and how that relates to how we present ourselves digitally. Enjoy this little teaser and watch the full interview it is so lovely!  0:00 - I'd love it if we made it 1:57 - We're all eating each other 2:30 - Why self actualization doesn't work for everyone 4:08 - The gatekeeping of virtue 6:05 - The erosion of collective trust 7:20 - Mark Fisher + Capitalist Realism 12:20 - The oversaturation of trends 15:50 - Context collapse and Poe's Law 18:20 - The extraction of monetary value from artisans 21:30 - It's too risky to be innovative in art
Magdalena Bay just put out their second album, Imaginal Disk following Mercurial World. These two are just starting to get some mainstream attention, but it's worth noting that they have been releasing music since 2016 and have consistently been fantastic. Some of my favorite tracks include Hysterical Us, Secrets, Turning Off the Rain, You Lose, Image, and Killing Time but it's easy to find something for everyone in their discography. I highly admire their creative persistence and homegrown operation! Woohoo!  0:00 - Magdalena Bay has earned their place in the Zeitgeist 0:35 - Two cooks in the kitchen 1:24 - Origins and Tabula Rasa 2:45 - Fav tracks 3:36 - DIY duo 4:15 - Struggle to find footing 5:52 - Day jobs and empty performances 7:13 - Music industry expectations vs reality 8:20 - Creating within constraints
Okay Kaya recently released her latest album, "Oh My God - That's So Me" but has been making beautiful, unique work for a while now with SAP, Watch This Liquid Pour Itself, Surviving Is the New Living, and Both. With tracks like Psych Ward, The Groke, Insert Generic Name, IUD, Comic Sans, Baked Bean, In Regards to Your Tweet, and Baked Beans it's hard not to understand the magic of Okay Kaya's charm and comedy but nevertheless I'm very excited to see how she grows and develops over the next couple of years!  0:00 - The magic of Okay Kaya 0:50 - Committing to the Bit 2:05 - What does Okay Kaya not do 3:05 - One Woman band 4:05 - A well deserved space in pop music 4:47 - The mysteriousness of the creative process 7:35 - Cheeky little softness 9:23 - Staying open to different mediums 10:38 - Captain of collaboration
If you haven't completely succumbed to the magic of Addison Rae's Diet Pepsi, I guarantee you will soon. Same goes for the (in my opinion) underrated C,XOXO-- between I LUV IT, B.O.A.T, June Gloom, Godspeed, and Chanel No. 5, there are plenty of songs that have singlehandedly put Camila Cabello on the map for me. Both these artists have taken a risk and ooo wee has it paid off! Would love your thoughts. Remi Wolf is THE funk pop lord of our generation if I do say so myself. "Big Ideas" just came out and I cannot help but succumb to the power of Cinderella, Soup, Pitiful and the rest of it! I cannot believe I neglected to talk about "Street You Live On" but wow what a banger. Lots of grooves that are pure fun but Remi's discography also has plenty of vibrant songs to make the pain of life a bit more bearable. I love to dance and also not feel alone.
