Today’s episode is one I’ve been patiently waiting to record - and I know a lot of you have been, too. Because if you’ve ever wondered who’s behind those must-read stories on news.com.au, or if you’ve sent a pitch to the “lifestyle editor” and crossed your fingers, today you’ll finally meet the woman with arguably the busiest inbox in Australia: Rebekah Scanlan. Rebekah is not just news.com.au’s Lifestyle Editor—she’s officially Australia’s most-pitched journalist. We’re talking up to 500 emails a day (yep, I had to ask how on earth she deals with that—spoiler alert: it involves a LOT of unopened emails and a sixth sense for sniffing out the real stories). In this episode, we get right into the nitty gritty of what makes a pitch stand out from the crowd, the real reason why brands like Woolies, Kmart and Maccas constantly make headlines, and Rebekah’s take on why our social media habits are changing the face of digital journalism forever. She’s got sharp advice for getting your story up, the pet peeves that will see your email deleted, and what she actually looks for when she opens a pitch from a total stranger. We also chat about the art of storytelling for a mass Aussie audience (and why EVERYONE has an opinion on Vegemite and Meghan Markle), plus the joys of seeing everyday stories go viral. So... whether you’re a founder desperate for a little media magic, a PR pro wanting to sharpen your pitch game, or just nosy like me, you’ll love Rebekah’s candid, behind-the-scenes take on what really gets covered on the biggest online news site in Australia. Let’s dive into Rebekah Scanlan’s Guide to Getting Noticed at news.com.au
Laura Aubusson is a 14‑year print journo career veteran.  Starting out in country newsrooms of the likes of The Daily Advertiser in Wagga Wagga, to covering lifestyle, news, and human‑interest stories for News Corp Australia, Kidspot, Mamamia, and beyond. Laura has a special knack for finding those relatable, emotionally‑charged stories that stop you mid‑scroll, whether it’s parenting wins and fails, viral cultural moments, or the issues shaping women’s lives in Australia today. Now working as a sought‑after freelance writer and mental health content creator for the Gidget Foundation, she knows exactly what editors are looking for, what makes a pitch irresistible, and how the digital media game has evolved. We talk about the rise of first‑person storytelling, seasonal content strategies, how to get that elusive “yes” from outlets like Mamamia or Kidspot, why strong images and a human face matter more than ever and the role authentic relationships play in helping your story get published. And here’s something extra exciting: Laura is joining us inside this round of the Media Masters Academy as a very special guest expert. So that means if you’ve joined this round, you’ll get the chance to meet Laura, pitch your story ideas live, and receive feedback directly from a working journalist at the forefront of digital parenting space.     Today’s episode of Media Magnet is essential listening for Australian business owners ready to take their expertise beyond domestic media and onto the global stage. Host Liz Nable introduces HARO (Help a Reporter Out), the international equivalent of Australia’s SourceBottle, now revived and run by Brett Farmiloe. HARO connects journalists from major global outlets with expert sources, opening doors for Australian and New Zealand entrepreneurs to get featured internationally and build their reputations as industry leaders1 . What is HARO and How Does it Work? HARO is the world’s largest platform connecting expert sources with journalists, distributing media call-outs from outlets like Fast Company, Entrepreneur, and The New York Times to hundreds of thousands of potential sources globally1 . Journalists submit queries, which are sent out via email newsletters up to three times a day. Sources can respond directly if they have relevant expertise1 . The Journey and Revival of HARO Founded in 2008, acquired in 2010, rebranded as Connectively, and discontinued in December 2024. Brett and his team at Featured.com acquired and relaunched HARO in April 20251 . Now, HARO is back as a free, ad-supported newsletter business for both journalists and sources1 . Why HARO Matters for Australian Entrepreneurs HARO offers unparalleled access to global media, with a strong user base in Australia and New Zealand (the third-largest group after the US and UK)1 . The platform provides opportunities to be featured in major outlets and establish authority as an industry expert1 . Types of Media Opportunities Most popular categories include business, finance, technology, lifestyle, home and garden, and healthcare1 . Opportunities range from mainstream business topics to niche expertise and personal stories1 . Actionable Tips for Getting Featured Only respond to queries where you truly add value and have relevant expertise1 . Provide journalists with everything they need—quotes, attribution, and contact details—to make it easy for your input to be included1 . Don’t be discouraged by the volume of responses; quality and relevance matter more than speed or quantity1 . Learn by observing queries before pitching, then focus on a few well-matched opportunities to build confidence and success1 . If you're looking for a little ray of sunshine amongst your Media and PR Pitches and Strategies, here it is. In fact it's a steady stream of brilliant light brought to you nightly by the world's smiliest journalist and all round lovely human, Channel 7 Sydney's, Grace Fitzgibbon. It's called The Bright Side and it's one minute of news television delivered daily at 6.55pm (the last item on the rundown in the 6pm news) and it's designed to end your day on a high note, feeling all the warm and fuzzies which is particularly relevant right now when the news is an absolute hot mess of negative information and fear. The Bright Side was born earlier this year out of necessity after news executives at Channel 7 noticed a worrying trend, their audience was switching off, or changing channels before the bulletin had finished. They knew they needed some good news to keep people watching. So, they trialled a one minute segment at the end of the show that was purely positive news only, stories of people being kind, helping each other, small businesses doing well, cute kids and cool new ideas, and low and behold ratings recovered. Grace soon found herself hosting The Bright Side every night, but there's one small problem, she's got a good news story shortage and she needs your help! Unlike every other episode of this podcast where I've told you (ad nauseam) as has every journalist I've interviewed that they're overwhelmed with pitches and it's a battle just to get your emails opened - The Bright Side is different.   So this, my friends, is your chance to get your business or your brand featured in a major news bulletin just by sharing your good news! (and you don't have to be located in Sydney either). You can pitch Grace your good news stories directly by emailing her: Gfitzgibbon@seven.com.au In the meantime - enjoy listening to this episode of Media Magnet and I don't forget to tag and message me on socials when your business is featured on the big screen with The Bright Side.
Kylee Dennis is a former police offer turned private investigator turned online romance scam expert.   Kylee knew there was something very newsworthy about what she did for a living so she took my Media Masters Academy course about 18 months ago. And then, she quite literally took the ball and ran with it.   Now Kylee is everywhere.   She's been featured on TV, radio, in magazines and too many podcasts to mention. She's travelling the country doing what she loves, speaking on stage and hosting women's education events. Her mission is to empower her target market, women over the age of 65, about how to avoid being sucked into online romance scams and all the sordid tricks online scammers play to entice vulnerable women of a certain age into handing over 100's of thousand of dollars. She still pitches the media consistently and takes every opportunity to double down on her niche and build that reputation as the top expert in her field. And it's working, culminating in an incredible opportunity to work with huge brands like Optus and most recently as the face of Westpac's anti-online scam campaign.   That is a big deal.  Huge even!   So how did she do it?   Well aside from taking the MMA course, Kylie has soaked up every little morsel of information I shared over those 6 weeks, she was teachable, coacheable and hungry for feedback and has just pitched and pitched and pitched.  She just will not take no for an answer....and it's paying off.   Not only is she getting featured in the media almost every week, big brands are knocking on her door to work with her.   As I say over and over inside my course, my job is to share with you everything I know, to help you understand the media and how the news cycle works and to educate you on what makes news...I teach you how to think like a journalist and then it's up to you to act like one. Kylee's success in the media is WILD, but it's 100% possible when you put into practice what I teach, place your pride to the side, and make a conscious decision not to rejection personally.  Media and PR is a long game and Kylee Dennis is keeping score. Enjoy 🎧
It's been a minute now since the whole recipe plagiarism debacle between high profile Australian cook's Nagi Maehashi of Recipe Tin Eats fame Vs Brooke Bellamy, founder of viral bakery Brooki's Bakehouse first kicked off. It's safe to say the dust has settled a little...for now....but since I filmed an IG live with my Crisis Comms go-to-gal, Sally Branson, at the height of the saga about the PR disaster it had become, it's gone nuts...well in my world anyway, let's just say it's the highest performing video I've ever posted, so for me thats. a big deal. So I'm practising what I preach to all my MMA students in the program and repurposing this epic LIVE session into podcast content to see how it performs!   I'll keep you i the loop if it takes off or tanks! OK back to the Nagi V Brooki situation. As a former journo I know too much about the media works to have a public opinion or take sides on who did what to whom, who's wrong and who's right, and I certainly DO NOT condone trolling of any kind on social media or otherwise.  However, I do believe there are some valuable business lessons to be learned from the recent BAKING BAD saga. Firstly why is this so DAMN newsworthy? It's a caramel slice recipe for goodness sake, we're not talking about Trump's new tariffs that could cripple world economy's or a cure for a terminal illness that could save thousands of lives. So let's discuss what makes a no-brainer news story, and learn lots of good PR 'what NOT TO DO's' while we're at it! I'm so keen to know what you think about this episode too! So hit me up in my DM's on Instagram at @liz_nable or email me: liz@liznable.com or even better, rate and review the podcast below!
Deena Shanhan, a Noosa native and 30 year veteran of the travel industry knew she had a great product.  The founder of Committed to Collect is the loyalty program expert you never knew you needed and can show you the most insane ways to turbocharge your frequent flyer points through your everyday purchases, without racking up crazy debt on your credit card! Every time she left the house she was using her natural sales skills to sell her Committed to Collect course, to friends, family, colleagues and anyone who would listen....but she needed to get her brand out to the masses, she needed to scale her exposure and she knew she needed to use the Media and PR to get it - but her efforts to do that on her own fell flat. That's when she found the Media Masters Academy and this is what she had to say about it: "Thank god for Google! Because that is how I found Liz and the Media Masters Academy. I was looking for someone to help educate me on how to get media exposure for my business, and  I came across Liz online.  I loved the course, and how could I not!  Before the 6 week course was even finished - I was featured 3 times in the media! Wow! My investment has paid off immediately and a side bonus was, I met other amazing business owners who all were invested in each others success. I now have great media contacts, understand what truly makes a media story and met Liz too! Thank you Liz for your guidance! Highly recommended." Deena is a 2024 MMA Alumni of the Media Masters Academy and she's certainly gotten herself some serious media coverage - all before the course even finished! So far Deena has been featured in: 🚀 CEO Blog Nation...30 Entrepreneurs Explain Why they started their business   🚀 Smart Company: How small business can benefit from Frequent flyer programmes   🚀 Today Show Extra: Loyalty Program Expert Feature: BIG 4 Loyalty Programs in Australia   🚀 Triple MMM Brisbane - Breakfast Radio ➕ PLUS: WATCH THIS SPACE 👀....she's in discussions with a major daily newspaper in Sydney - working on a feature about how loyalty programs can help Aussie families to holiday at Christmas!     This is an episode dedicated to all the small business owners out there who have long wrestled with the idea of putting themselves out into the public arena and using the media to help them grow.   Deena is proof you don't have to have a massive business to make a big impact.  You just need to start.   🎧 Enjoy
I'll be honest, when I first started Nable My Business - I had quite a narrow-minded, short term view of what my business would do. What it's purpose would be. I naively thought I was helping women-led businesses to grow leveraging the media and PR.  Just like I had done for myself using my journalist skills from my first career in TV News to grow my first bricks and mortar business to 7 figures in the early days of my entrepreneurial journey. But coming up to my 3rd anniversary as a Media and PR Coach to women in business it's becoming glaringly obvious to me that there's a whole lot more going on here than just encouraging women to promote their business or their brand in the public domain. Women (in my experience Australian women) have a massive problem selling themselves, they battle with dark thoughts of what others will think of them, they feel ill at the thought of being called an expert, have crazy amounts of Imposter Syndrome at every turn (even when they're seriously accomplished) and compare themselves constantly to those around them (normally other women). This is a repeat theme of working with women of all different cultures, business sizes and levels of experience and trying to help them share their stories, their opinions and build their reputation and authority in traditional media. So, when I learned about an in depth study written by Australian behavioural scientist, Penny Locaso (ironically a referral from a student inside my MMA course) I couldn't get my hands on that research fast enough. As well as being a behavioural scientist, Penny is an impact expert and mentor, international speaker, published author, budding psychologist and trauma therapist, nature lover, yogi and proud single mum. And now, here she is on the podcast, just a few weeks later.  And, not a moment too soon, because the findings of her white paper, Hidden Figures - where are all the female experts?...are mind-blowing. Did you know that only 24% of news sources globally are women (World Economic Forum, 2020) and just 31% of paid speakers are female voices (Forbes, 2023) and At the current rate of change, the World Economic Forum (2024) predicts that it will take another 131 years to reach gender parity. In this fascinating episode of the podcast we discuss, not just the incredible results of Penny's white paper, but why women constantly self-deprecate, why they feel so weird about being considered an 'expert' in their field, and, more importantly, why it's up to each and every one of us to do our part to overcome generations of being 'good girls' and disrupt the status quo if we're to see any sort of significant change to these shocking figures in our lifetime.
Tracy Hall's story is W I L D 😱 If you haven't heard of her yet, you will NOT forget her quickly after listening to this episode of the podcast.  Tracy is the infamous last victim of Australia's most prolific conman, Hamish McLaren. She lost her life savings to Hamish (A$317,000) and her ability to trust anyone ever again.  Tracy's story was first told in the hit podcast by The Australian WHO THE HELL IS HAMISH? and in May this year she published her memoir THE LAST VICTIM detailing her life and experiences before, during and after her relationship with Hamish.   Tracy's story is not entirely unusual. We all know or have heard of someone who's been scammed and lost money to deception.  It's everywhere.   What is impressive about Tracy is her ability to articulate her experience and draw lessons to help others.  Her story covers so much more than her experiences with Hamish. It delves into the global scams and fraud epidemic, media narratives, shame, grief, trust, resilience, vulnerability, rebuilding, mindset, and victim blaming.  While Tracy's detailed story of lies and deceit at the hands of a notorious, serial conman is so fascinating it's been turned into a hit podcast and is tabled to become a TV series and documentary next year, you'll be surprised to learn that I didn't invite her on the podcast because of her story's content or plot line, so to speak, although it's the kind of stuff movies are made from!  Rather, this episode of Media Magnet is a valuable lesson in the power of storytelling, what happens when you take ownership of your own narrative and how to harness the opportunity to build an entire business based on your brand story alone.  This is an episode for every business owner who's ever doubted their story's purpose or relevance, believing it to be uninteresting or unimportant, and, I hope, illustrates how some distance from your own story allows us the space to see it's true value, be transparent and be OK with being vulnerable enough to share the lessons we've learned along the way.  If you're keen to learn more about Tracy's full story after listening to this episode you can support her, and your local independent bookshop, by buying her book, The Last Victim.    Available at all good bookshops now.
My guest on the podcast today was so good inside the most recent round of the Media Masters Academy that I just had to get her on the podcast too! Adella Beaini is a journalist and writer with the Daily Telegraph in Sydney and has covered everything from breaking news, politics, small business, celebrity news, mental health and every topic in between. Like every journo I know, she has tens of thousands of unread emails in her inbox at any one time and is reporting for a daily newspaper that also has a 24/7 online presence, so she's an extremely busy woman...however if you're looking for a journalist who's going to give you, even as a complete stranger sending your first pitch to her inbox - the time of day - Adella is THE journalist you should reach out to. Inside this episode we cover trending news topics, why the media constantly need good news sources like you, how to infuse your business into the current media and news headlines of the moment, the best times to pitch, the one time of year when you're most likely to get featured and more! Listen to the very end of this episode for Adella's incredible offer to all my Media Magnet listeners!!  And be the first to take her up on it! You'd be absolutely crazy not to! Don't miss this incredible opportunity to listen to one of Australia's rising reporting stars share her inside tips and behind the scenes secrets of how to get featured in one of Australia's top daily newspapers that's syndicated around the country and boasts millions of readers every day.
You've probably already heard of my guest on the podcast today, she's got almost 100,000 followers on social media, has written 4 best-selling books, created a super successful personal brand around money mindset and made 25 million dollars in her business in the last decade as a result. Denise Duffield-Thomas (or DDT as many of her followers have nicknamed her) is the money mentor for the new wave of online entrepreneurs who want to make money and change the world. Denise's incredible business trajectory tells me two things...firstly there's a huge demand for what she does and, secondly she must serve her clients really, really well because they keep coming back, over and over again! The catalyst for Denise and I meeting was purely coincidental.  I recently heard her speak at a conference on the Gold Coast and it was her story, sometimes I call this brand story or back story that really struck me. It was the perfect blend of honesty, altruism, inspiration, motivation, success and failure.  When she shared her story on stage, which I'm sure she's probably done at this point in her career thousands of times, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was captivated by her journey. It's the kind of story, I imagine, that never gets old. And exactly how I teach my students inside my program the Media Masters Academy to share their stories - to take the audience on a journey, to inspire emotion, take action and influence. So what did I do, I bravely asked her to be my next guest on the podcast and she said yes! As you'll soon discover for yourself despite her crazy success Denise is genuinely human so while we do talk brand story quite a bit, we also dive into how she found the courage to nail her niche, her strategy and purposeful positioning her area of expertise and the holy grail for most women in business, learning to give less F's about what people think and doing it anyway.

Normally, you'd only get special access to these guest experts inside my program, The Media Masters Academy, but the overwhelming feedback from those who missed out on the last round of the MMA course was that you wanted a taste of what's inside the course first. You wanted to get a feel for what this exclusive access looks like. And you wanted to get some one on one time with journos and get feedback on your pitches first. And so your media wish is my command introducing the Pitch This Not That! live media training series with me, Liz Nable Media and PR expert and coach and highly esteemed journalist and Smart Company News Editor, Eloise Keating. We're teaming up to review your media pitches live in this exclusive webinar designed specifically for business owners, personal brands, founders, startups and side hustlers, we're going to answer, answer all your pitching questions, share our screens and evaluate your real life pitches, live, line by line. Transforming your content into winning story ideas no journalist will ever say no to, and getting you featured in the media now. So book your spot and clear your diary for Wednesday the 16th of October, 2024 at 12:30pm Australian Eastern Standard Time, and for just $297 you'll get exclusive access to the best journos in the country. In the meantime, sit back, relax and listen carefully to this special recap episode, as Eloise shares all her top tips and tricks for getting your brand or business featured in Smart Company Magazine. It's the perfect way to prepare for our live event on October 16. See you there!
