Welcome to a brand new season of the Beat Burnout podcast (formerly Do Yourself No Harm). Join Dr Claire Ashley and guests this season as we talk everything to do with burnout. We're kicking off the new season focusing on how to return well to work after burnout. I am increasing asked about burnout on repeat, and I think that if you are habitually burning out, that should be signal to you to go back and do some really deep work on why you are not able to return to work and stay well. I think that it is really difficult to return to work well after burnout, and never more so when you are knackered, exhausted and in a position of vulnerability. In fact, it is such an important thing to get right, that I have created a bonus module in my burnout recovery course, dedicated to this exact issue. You can find out more about the course here. In today's episode I am joined by Dr Katya Miles. Katya is a GP and Occupational Health Doctor turned Wellbeing Trainer, Team & Careers Coach & Specialist in Workplace Wellbeing. Having journeyed through burnout, she resolved to empower caring professionals to avoid the mistakes she made, and thrive in work. This passion drove her to set up The Working Well Doctor where she uses her clinical and academic expertise, along with her personal experience, to deliver inspiring coaching and training programmes for overstretched professionals. You can contact Katya via her website and Instagram. and the link to her Spring retreat is here . In this episode, we cover: Why you need time off work with burnout What things you need to do to prepare to return to work after burnout Who you need to help you to return to work well What changes and/or reasonable adjustments might be helpful for your return, both in the short term and in the long term What a realistic return to work looks and feels like. Whilst both Katya and I are both doctors, today's episode is for anyone who is returning to work after burnout and a period of sick leave. I hope you enjoy the new season. As we approach the end of the summer, join me as I discuss why long summer holidays are not a cure for burnout.  I talk about 2 holidays I've had during my burnout, one absolute disaster, and one more recently which was much more of a success, and why they were so different.  I touch on some of the evidence around how and when to schedule your holidays to help with burnout, as well as how to schedule breaks within your working day too. Welcome to the second season of the Do Yourself No Harm Podcast.  Thank you so much to everyone that has listened to and shared the episodes from last season, your support is very much appreciated.  I'm starting this new season with some of my reflections on why it is so hard to seek help before you reach a crisis point in burnout.  The reasons covered include: Working culture  Guilt and shame  Not being taught how to recognise the signs of burnout in ourselves or others The recovery paradox: how we throw ourselves into maladaptive coping strategies that inadvertently fuel burnout  Changes to your brain structure and function Colleagues might not notice changes- the burnt out person still turns up to work If you enjoyed the episode please hit like and subscribe.  My services: Coaching and education  Subscription box Where to find me: Instagram  YouTube  Free Facebook Group: The Burnout Doctor   TikTok --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beatburnout/message
In today's episode I speak to Dr Kiran Rahim, a paediatric doctor and mother, about her experiences with burnout and therapy.   We discuss the circumstances that caused her burnout, what it was like to experience it, and we go into some depth talking about her recovery and the role that therapy played in helping her to get better.  I would like to thank Kiran for her rawness, openness and bravery in sharing her experiences with me on this episode.   Dr Rahim can be found over on Instagram, where she is known as @themunchingmedic More details about my professional development and mental wellbeing subscription and membership for medics can be found over at www.doyourselfnoharm.com Please note I have marked this episode as explicit due to a couple of (very appropriate placed, IMHO) swear words in it.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beatburnout/message

Welcome to the second episode of my new podcast, Do Yourself No Harm. I’m Dr Claire Ashley, and I am a GP, burnout survivor and mental health advocate. For today’s episode I discuss the importance of compassion and humanism in medicine with Dr Laura Vater, a US based oncologist. Humanism and compassion in medicine is not just about improving patient care and our relationship with patients, it’s also about enhancing and improving the clinician experience, and improving recruitment and retention. In this podcast we also talk about how COVID has changed our jobs, how the impact of sleep deprivation and lack of physical and mental rest affects us, and we also discuss the impact of poor staffing and issues with recruitment and retention.  Dr Vater also shares her SMILE scale, which is an evidence based tool to help us prioritise our physical and mental health.  I hope you enjoy our chat today, and if you do please hit like, subscribe and leave a review. My brand new subscription and membership for medics is now available from my website , and if you’re interested in knowing more or signing up, please head over to www.doyourselfnoharm.com, or feel free to contact me through Instagram @drclaireashley Dr Vater's website can be found here: https://www.lauravater.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beatburnout/message

Join me as I talk about how I think the current cost of living crisis in the UK is going to affect people who are at risk of burnout, and people who are currently burnt out too.  I share a bit about the context of the problem, who is going to be affected, and how to try to manage this both on an individual and systems level.    My signature burnout recovery course is going to launch very soon!  This unique course has been developed by me to help guide you through your burnout recovery and to guide you through that process of creating a life and career that works for you.  It is everything I wish I had myself when I was going through the process and has been created with the best scientific evidence currently available on burnout recovery, plus my own lived experience of having come out of crisis and creating a fantastic post burnout life.   The programme I have written is a real deep dive into understanding burnout- how to prevent it, how to recognise it and how to manage it.   This course helps burnt out professionals like you to learn how to recognise, manage and recover from burnout, so that you can create a life and career that allows you to thrive post burnout.   You can sign up to the waitlist here: https://www.subscribepage.com/burnout-course --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beatburnout/message
Join me as I talk about how I used journalling and reflective writing to make some difficult decisions about my life and my career post burnout.  I’ll be covering how you can use journalling to do the same for yourself, but for those of you that need a little extra help I am going to be putting on a reflective writing workshop next Thursday 29th September at 8pm.  The theme of the workshop is making difficult decisions, and I’ll be taking you through some journalling prompts on this topic.  All you need is to bring a pen, paper and yourself, and prepare for an hour of working indulgence.  If you are a subscriber to the Dp Yourself No Harm box  then you can access the workshop for free, for everyone else there is a small charge of £10 per person. The link to sign up is here. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beatburnout/message
