Description
An indie music podcast. Made in Edinburgh in Scotland, but with podsafe music from all over the world. Will our host make it through to the end without making any mistakes? It's unlikely, but the only way to find out is to listen.
350 Episodes

I’ve managed to put my back out, crouching down and rummaging in boxes in the small storage space in the loft. Normally I record the podcast kneeling on the floor of a cupboard, but I decided that probably wasn’t the best thing for my back. So I went out for a morning constitutional and recorded the show on the move instead. Expect dream-pop and post-punk riot grrrl music. Was any of this better for my back? Probably not. Probably not.

Surprise! It’s a new Edinburgh Man Podcast. The last year has been rather crazy at Edinburgh Man Towers. We had the attic converted, which involved a lot of banging, drilling and sawing. None of this is especially conducive to recording audio. Then today, I finally had some free time and relative quiet, so I thought I would record a podcast. But then I decided I should probably put a coat of paint on the new room first, so as I record this show I’m sore and shattered. I know, I know. Nothing has changed in the last year.

Apologies for the somewhat variable release schedule for the podcast. January has been pretty busy, and unfortunately that busyness spilled over into February and the school holidays. But today, at long last, I have a few hours to myself to record a podcast and play the playlist that has been sitting and waiting since the first week of the year.
Keeping with the theme, I’m also trying out a pair of varifocal glasses. So while I have some sort of notes for today’s show, I can’t really read them very well, so this is very much off the cuff.
[00:20] RADICAL KITTEN – Never On Time
[06:15] Dead Married – Alone
[12:27] Swiss Portrait – Always
[17:06] hidden driver – Whitman St Blues

It’s Hogmanay! The detritus of Christmas surrounds us. The last few crackers are left unpulled, a few lonely boxes of chocolates are still to be eaten, and we soon must deal with the looming bells of the New Year. All of which means that it is time for the Edinburgh Man end of year show 2023! The 25 tracks, as picked by your erstwhile host as being the best of all the music (or at least all the creative commons music) played on the show over the last twelve(ish) months.
Hopefully you enjoyed listening to the podcast this year, and hopefully one or two of your favourites are featured in today’s show. Have a great New Year and I’ll see you in 2024.

I’m hiding away as I record this week’s show – ostensibly the Christmas episode of the podcast. I’ve gone and left it too late and I now need to record the episode on the Saturday before Christmas, i.e. the first day the kids are off school. They are already at each other’s throats and starting to get very annoyed by my continued asking when they are going back to school.
Anyway, many thanks for listening to the return of the show over the last few months. I’m sort of getting used to doing these again, and for the most part they are weekly-ish. Hopefully next week (sometime between Christmas and New Year) I’ll be able to squeeze in a best of 2023 show. But until then, Merry Christmas!

Aye, the nights are fair drawing in up here in Edinburgh – sunset is something crazy like half past three in the afternoon. The photo accompanying today’s show was taken while me and Thing 2 walked home from school today. Regular listeners will no doubt remember than Friday is a half day for the schools in Edinburgh, so even though this photo was taken at 12.30pm, the fuzzy lukewarm glare just above the trees is actually the sun.
On today’s show jangly shambling Christmas music from Sheffield, punk from Spain, shoegaze from Australia, and some brilliant downtempo surf rock from Columbus, Ohio’s Vietnam II on netlabel blocSonic.
[00:38] SHRUB – 12 Days of Shrubmas
[06:25] ZUTATEN – Mancuerna
[11:55] Angelo Celli – point of you

[27:43] Vietnam II – Cargo (I Search Through the Night)
Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.
Urgh, I have a cold. That’s the excuse I’m going for as to why the show has been delayed for a week or two. It’s absolutely not because I was spending all my free time catching up on three seasons of Doctor Who before the 60th anniversery specials started. No it’s not that at all.
On today’s show, mostly new tracks from releases that have been featured over the last few months. In one case it’s because the track is a wee bit festive, and in other cases it’s because they are great tracks that I wanted to play! There’s also a new track from a fantastic new album “Lost Dogs” by keep it together on Seattle’s friend’s house records.
[00:20] The Cosmonautopolitans – Mistletoe
[04:29] Ballsy – Be Your Baby
[08:41] keep it together – Dashcam

It’s the three hundredth podcast! Except it’s not, because I’ve always been fast and loose with the numbering. It’s probably more like number 350, but let’s pretend for a moment and bask in having reached this numeric milestone.
In keeping with previous significant numbered episodes, very little extra work has gone into this one. Although this time, it’s a double length show. A mixure of both new releases and classic podcast favs. All creative commons licensed. Some even on vinyl.
I had hoped for this to be a live show, but I’ve not quite got the live server running, so it’s prerecorded. Also, I used a creaky old iPad and some creaky old iPad softare, so the audio quality is… meh. Many apologies for that. I’ve had to run some extra compression in it too to even out the volume. So it’s probably going to sound like a badly tuned FM radio. But what else would you expect!
[00:38] The Westerwaves – Penguin Pop[06:54] Keel Her – Riot Grrrl[11:27] Grrrl Gang – A Fight Breaks Out At A Karaoke Bar[14:41] Trust Fund – Cut me out[20:26] Home Front – Nation[23:55] Radiator Hospital – Fireworks[28:41] Low Pines – Heavy Hander[32:32] North Bloom – Rockstar, baby[37:48] Schwervon – Truth Teller[41:33] Pine Point – Say it Again[46:29] Townhouse Woods – Cricket Hymn, Part I[51:00] mmmarkos – Motion[57:34] Swearin’ – Kenosha
Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.
I was showing my work colleague some new photo management software I’ve been using, and I shared an album with him. “Why would someone have so many photos of coffee?” I mean, it’s probably a legitimate question. But my feeling is – why not? I’m sure about 50% of the images that I use for this podcast are coffee related, and if they aren’t then it’s time to up my game.
I’m feeling nicely caffeinated as I write this due to a new coffee grinder, which is much easier on this old man’s arm than the hand crank version. However not sufficiently caffeinated for this to be a live podcast. I’ve been experimenting with doing live shows again, and have even set up a site at live.edinburghman.com. However after spending half an hour fighting with and losing to streaming software, it just a normal pre-recorded show. Good music though!
[00:22] Bris – Errautsiko dira hiriak
[06:54] Noah Roth – Hold On / Okay

[30:33] The Dream Is Dead – Death Of A Superstar
Unless otherwise noted, all tracks are released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.
Apologies for the lack of podcast last week. The all new Edinburgh Man Towers is still, very slowly, being decorated and upgraded since we moved in over a year ago. Last week it was the turn of the Dining Room / Office / Music Listening Room to be rewired. The biggest room in the house, and room with the most stuff. All of which had to be cleared out for the work.
Of course, while the room was empty we thought it would be a good time to lay a new floor. By ourselves. So that was last weekend’s fun, and I’m still not really recovered. I’d love to say that you can’t tell, and that this week’s show is the pinnacle of professionalism, but you know…
[00:32] Final Passion – Perpetual Motion
[09:11] Hard Femme – The Car That Kills Me
[14:34] Collate – Erika’s Trip
[20:41] Shiv and the Carvers – Brat

One of the most important things when it comes to making a podcast is planning. Planning. Not something that this show has much of. But not this time, this time the show was actually planned. Anticipating the fact that this week was the Edinburgh schools October holidays, your erstwhile host recorded the show last week, so all I had to do was write these notes and upload the show. The final point was touch and go for a while, but once the kids were occupied with playing videos games I managed to squeeze in just enough time to scribble this nonsense and hit publish.
On today’s show, indie folk from Rhode Island and Chile, indie-rock from Indonesia, post-punk from Edinburgh, and more.
Track 1 is not released under a CC licence and is included with kind permission of PK Bats.
[00:50] PK Bats – I Witnessed a Drowning

Back in the cupboard for today’s podcast. It’s still a wee bit cramped in here, but the acoustics are hopefully better. Let me know if it sounds good, bad or indifferent. You can get in touch with the show on social media via Mastodon (it’s pretty much only Mastodon now) at @edinburgh_man@mastodon.scot
On today’s show it’s another genre spanning world tour with anarcho hardcore punk from Arkansas, shoegaze from Brighton in the UK, post-punk from Indonesia, and art-rock from Oregon.
[00:51] DryerFire – Brainrot
[04:48] The Marble Tea – Parchment

It’s been a bit of a week at Edinburgh Man Towers. The kids were off school for three of their four and a half days last week due to a strike, which was as hectic as you would imagine. Then, the fifteen-year-old fridge freezer decided to slowly fail. The result of this meant some unplanned remodelling in the kitchen to accommodate a new fridge freezer – an appliance that seems to have grown considerably over the last decade.
To top it off, I had the microphone settings all wrong for this show and my chat sounded terrible. Well, more terrible that normal. So this is take two!
[00:27] Objct – Feed The Fire
[06:46] OOPF! – pennies
[12:15] Kevin and the Robots – Quaking Shaking
[20:16] Max Lampin – Faux Contact

[29:41] IBOPA – When You Write
All tracks released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.
An unexpected COVID jag this week has thrown the already shambolic podcast schedule into a state of flux. My Fitbit tells me I was a bit under the weather for the two days afterwards. Although to be honest, I’m not sure I needed a watch to tell me that.
As a result the podcast is a couple of days later than planned, however there is some great music on offer, including two top jangle indie-pop tracks from Indonesia and dream-pop from Spain.
[00:14] WONDERFLU – Green Planet[04:49] DUMP HIM – Unimportant[09:06] Sidewalk Cellist – Clara Shandler – Trickle Down[15:10] Beta Máximo y Ariadna Punsetes – Horas antes[19:22] Drizzly – We’€™re on a Date![23:02] Moongazing and Her – Head Over Heels
All tracks released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.
After an impromptu week off, the podcast returns. Obviously it wasn’t really a week off for your earstwhile host. Life reared its ugly head and prevented the recording of a show. But we return this week, refreshed (sort of) and with loads of great new music.
I’m also in a bit of pain this week. The summer has involved lots of hard landscaping in the garden at the new Edinburgh Man Towers. However, my old bones are not what they used to be, and too much digging of holes for fences posts, and hurling rocks into a skip has given me tennis elbow. Luckily I just about managed to hold it together so that I can play you tracks from some of my recent Bandcamp Friday purchases.
Now, where is that ice pack..?
[00:40] Brorlab – Shitty Oven[05:43] Glutenhead – How It Feels (Revisited)[13:32] The Cosmonautopolitans – Strained[18:45] Hard Femme – Jenny Rambling[23:42] Hutch – Mechanical Bull[29:39] Wine Pride – Discovery
All tracks released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.
Apologies for being a bit later than normal. I went and ordered myself an Analogue Pocket portable games console a while ago. Like eight or nine months ago. It’s a hardware clone of the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance, with a whole loads of bells and whistles to boot. Anyway, to my surprise it arrived this week and I’ve been spending my free time tinkering with it ever since. So despite the fact I prepared the playlist for this show last Tuesday, it has taken me until now to get around to the actual recording.
Also, the photo is NOT of the Analogue Pocket. It’s of a Gameboy Pocket that I modified during the Pandemic. Partly because I planned to record and upload the podcast before the Pocket arrived, but also because I think it looks cooler. Not because I already had this photo on my phone. No, not that at all.
[00:21] Osmiini -Sueño Escatológico[05:44] Temporary Longterm Positions – Creeping[11:25] kositracks – How to make it look good[16:36] The Terminal Buildings – Struck Me Down[20:05] Asia Menor – La naturaleza[26:53] Doust – After The End
All tracks released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.
Last week I said that there probably wasn’t going to be a show this week, and here we are. In the end I found six great tracks (mostly from recent releases) and I wanted to record and upload the show as quickly as I could!
With hindsight, I should have waited at least an hour, because during most of the show I’m on edge waiting for Thing 2’s delivery of yet another giant Lego kit. Thankfully it turns up about halfway through and I can sort of relax for the rest of the show.
[00:55] DUMP HIM – Trash
[06:18] Sloppy Heads – Love Is A Disease
[13:05] Home Front – Overtime
[18:05] The Crystal Furs – Get Scrappy!
[21:22] Straight White Teeth – Summer Backseat
[27:06] Tossing Seed – The Flower Still Remains
All tracks released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.
As regular listeners may remember, I’ve been cataloguing and archiving old episodes of the show. Making old episodes available again in the feed, and uploading shows and shownotes to archive.org. As I’ve been cutting and pasting things like tracklists and band links, I’ve noticed so many tracks that I’ve completely forgotten about. Many of which are fantastic.
I suspect long-time listeners may also have forgotten many of these too. In the age of streaming services, we are guided by algorithms and curated playlists, that always seem to include the same stuff. So, let’s delve into the archive for this August mix. Tracks that were played on shows from the month of August in days gone by – and crucially ones that you can still download! I’ve called this show “August Blend” in honour of some great coffee I bought while in Cromarty last week.
If you want to buy me more coffee, you can now support the show at https://ko-fi.com/edinburgh_man
[01:19] Aggi – Punk Boy Meets Punk Girl So What[05:33] Harvey Dentures – Earl[10:11] The Howitzers – Bottle Rocket[14:10] DUMP HIM – Route One Saugus (archive from 2018-07-21 with licence information)[17:35] Colour Me Wednesday – Purge Your Inner Tory[21:30] Brock Tyler – Why Do You Go From Me?[25:04] Entertainment for the Braindead – Clouds And Swallows[30:38] high pop – crawl[35:22] Radiator Hospital – Cut Your Bangs[38:02] Satan Wriders – Freeway[41:14] The Toothaches – BRICK[45:10] The Love-Inns – Asthma[49:22] Lowtide – Spring[55:24] YELLOWBIRDS – Across The Whipplewash
All tracks released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.
Right. Okay. A second attempt at recording this podcast!
This week we’ve been on our summer holidays. The first few days were spent “glamping” near Glenshee. The next week or so was spent in a static caravan just north of Inverness. I first recorded this podcast while at the glamping site and unfortunately, it was way windier than I noticed at the time. I guess I should have realised, being on the side of a hill in Glenshee and all. Anyway, this is the second attempt. A bit echoey but hopefully more listenable.
[00:55] Beta Maximo – A Marte[06:58] Soft Top – Voiceover[13:32] Second ∞ Sight – No Angel to Me[20:42] The Mountain Goats – Corsican Mastiff Stride[26:02] Amber Arcades – Constants Dream[31:52] Keel Her – Begin
Tracks 1,2,3,5 and 6 are released under Creative Commons licences. See links for more details.

My plan for today was to build a deck. Not like a Pokemon deck, or a MTG deck, but a wooden construction out in the back garden for sitting on and enjoying the… weather? Unfortunately the Edinburgh Fringe must be starting soon because it’s wet. Very wet. Chucking it down with rain. So I’ve tried to stash these 5 metre long pieces of wood under the partial shade of a hedge with the intention to return to them on a nicer day. I guess that means they’ll sit there for some time.
Instead of being productive, I’ve recorded a podcast. I think I was supposed to do this a day or two ago, but I got confused about what day I said I’d record it, so it’s happening now. After all, the tagline for the blog does now say “sporadically scheduled”, and I don’t want to go off-brand.
[00:31] Flower – Lethargy
[09:27] Garmisch – Facing the Sea (Album Version)
[15:25] Victory Road – Takes a Sudden Turn
[20:59] Dad Rocks – Peers
