In this episode, we’re talking about sequencing mistakes - the common ones, the subtle ones, and the ones we definitely made ourselves.Of course, sequencing is subjective. But after years of teaching, training teachers, leading retreats, and building classes that actually retain students, we’ve noticed patterns. Certain choices tend to create stronger classes, deeper learning, and more trust in the room. And certain habits… quietly work against you.We unpack what happens when you do too much too soon, move too quickly, or walk into class without a clear intention. We talk about over-sequencing one side, changing your class every single week, teaching from ego instead of awareness, and why nervous system regulation matters more than flashy transitions. We also dive into:• Warming up slowly (and why most teachers don’t)• Having a plan without being rigid• Simplifying instead of stacking endlessly• Setting a pace that actually matches the breath• Not disorienting your students (they want to feel held, not confused)• Why demoing the entire class might be disconnecting you• How to keep things balanced without overdoing one theme or peakThis episode is honest, practical, and slightly confrontational in the best way. If you’re a teacher who wants stronger classes and more grounded students, or a student curious about what’s happening behind the scenes, this one’s for you.Want to support our podcast? In this episode, recorded a few weeks before our Denver trip, Bradshaw shares about reaching his one-year sober milestone. We talk about it all — the struggles that led him to drinking, what shifting away from alcohol looked like, how friends can truly support someone in recovery, and the tools that have helped him stay sober. We even reflect on retreats and running a business before and after drinking, and what has changed along the way.Giana steps into more of an interviewer role, creating space for Bradshaw to share openly, and he does so with honesty and vulnerability. This conversation is real, sensitive, and deeply human. If you or someone you love is navigating addiction, please know you’re not alone. There are many paths and tools available, and we hope this episode helps you feel supported. And if you’re the friend walking alongside someone in recovery, we hope this offers insight into how individual and personal that journey can be.Join us in celebrating Bradshaw’s one-year anniversary, and thank you for listening with an open heart.Want to support our podcast? Before we get philosophical, we debrief our throuple weekend in Vail after teaching at The River in Denver, including a podcasting mishap we absolutely did not plan, what we learned from a full weekend of workshops, and everything coming up next. Giana is dreaming up a new retreat, Bradshaw is diving into a restorative training, and we share more about upcoming collaborative events and teacher trainings. Then we get into it. What does “advanced” actually mean in yoga? We look at it from both the teacher and student lens and unpack how our definitions have shifted over the years. What makes an advanced teacher? Is it complexity, or the ability to create class-to-class without ego? What makes an advanced student? Is it flexibility, or nervous system regulation? We talk about the current inclination to move fast in yoga and the power of the pause. We explore teaching and practicing with versus without music, and how sometimes removing layers can create more depth. Giana reflects on how not needing music anymore feels like a personal marker of growth, especially since it once felt uncomfortable. We also explore the subtle internal markers that signal a deeper experience unfolding within the practice.Because maybe advanced is not about harder shapes. Maybe it is about subtler awareness. We also speak to those who love a sweaty feel-good workout and why that can be great, while also asking how we use practice to feel more, question more, and expand our capacity. Advanced evolves. It is personal. It is different for everyone. And it rarely looks the way we expect it to. Want to support our podcast? In this episode, we talk about mindful dating. Bradshaw is out in the world, dating with intention and looking for a primary partnership. Giana is deeply intrigued by his process and asks a lot of questions, while also reflecting on what she did differently when she met her partner, Joe.We hear about Bradshaw’s recent dates, the challenges of navigating gay dating culture, what he’s actually looking for, and how he decides who’s worth meeting up with. Giana reflects on her first meeting with Joe and the soft rules that helped her stay present and open-minded, including cutting out alcohol, waiting to be intimate, and getting to know people beyond looks by paying attention to values and how someone makes you feel.Plus, plenty of hilarious dating stories, from mansplaining yoga businesses to walking into a truly messy home.Want to support our podcast? This week we welcome Margo Lightburn back to the pod after two years away, and a lot has changed.Since we last spoke, Margo has retired from teaching yoga and opens up about her complicated, sometimes bitter goodbye to the industry and everything that followed. We talk candidly about grief, including the loss of her mother, undergoing a hysterectomy, and the deeply personal healing journey that ultimately led her to begin writing a book.We reflect on a time when yoga felt like the end-all, be-all, the constant push for flexibility, the pressure to do more, and how overdoing it quietly led to injury. We talk about teaching from an unhealed place, tending to childhood wounds, and what happens when ambition outpaces care.As always, the conversation wanders through tangents, hilarious moments, and big questions. We glaze on finding community, the state of the world right now, hot yoga, pelvic floor health, abuse in the industry, and the many ways to go deeper in your healing. We also hear about Margo’s new episodic podcast series coming soon and what leaving the yoga industry helped her reclaim and conquer. This episode feels less like an interview and more like old friends catching up, losing track of time, telling the truth, and letting the conversation unfold where it wants to go.It’s honest, funny, messy, and deeply human.Settle in and enjoy the listen!Find Margo Lightburn Online:Web: https://margolightburn.com/IG: @margolightburnWant to support our podcast? In this episode, Bradshaw and Giana dive into one of the most deceptively hard practices in yoga (and life): surrender- on the mat, in the classroom, and everywhere in between.First, they begin to unpack this concept and what it really means to surrender in the physical practice- speaking of things like the ego, finding your edge, and creating balance of steadiness and ease, or f sthira and sukha. You’ll hear stories from their early “ohhh… this is surrender” moments, plus what they notice most often in students- when ambition disguises itself as self-harm, and how honoring your body can be the most disciplined choice. From a teacher’s perspective, they reflect on the idea of surrender from tackling internal battles around perfectionism- including surrendering the plan, letting yourself be seen as a real or flawed human in front of a room full of people, and, of course, the ego. They also share how non-attachment or vairāgya, can be its own kind of freedom or form of surrender. As they shift the conversation off the mat and into real life, Giana shares her experience with health anxiety and uncertainty, and how her surrender practice became more important than ever. It has now taken on new meaning as she steps into pregnancy and the beginning of motherhood. And Bradshaw offers his own approach to anxiety, which looks different than Giana’s… but they both keep landing in the same place: the practice of releasing control- again and again, in tiny moments, in big ones, and in the ones you didn’t see coming.Giana closes with a sweet reflection on faith, and in true funny-thing fashion, they lighten the air with funny stories. Of course, you can also expect tangents, and the kind of honest laughter that only happens when you stop gripping so tightly.Want to support our podcast? In this episode, Giana Gambino and Bradshaw Wish record live from YogaRenew in Hoboken, NJ with Kate Lombardo and Patrick Franco.Together, they get real about yoga partnerships—how clear communication, shared values, and a mission rooted in community can create a collaboration that actually lasts. These four longtime teachers bring equal parts honesty and hilarity as they pull back the curtain on what it’s like to be in a male–female platonic partnership: finding the right fit, defining roles, balancing responsibilities, and knowing when to call in backup.Expect behind-the-scenes stories, ridiculous retreat moments, and a few tangents (including a dog left out in the cold). If this industry has ever felt lonely or hard to navigate, this conversation is a reminder that with consistency, trust, and a willingness to try new things, you can carve out your niche, find your people, and build something bigger than yourself.Check out YogaRenew: @yogarenew | https://yogarenew.com/Patrick Franco Jr.: @patrickfrancojr | https://www.patrickfrancojr.com/Kate Lombardo: @kate.lombardo | https://www.katelombardo.com/Want to support our podcast? Today on the podcast, we’re joined by Lizzie Lasater - teacher, writer, creator, and daughter of Judith Hanson Lasater, who has built her own vibrant path in the yoga world from her home in Austria. Lizzie shares how a chance meeting with her now-husband led her to move across the world, learn German as an adult (“why is this so hard?!”), and build a global online teaching career rooted in rest, clarity, and presence. We discuss what it was like growing up around yoga before it became popular, how she eventually discovered her own path into the practice, and how she deepened it with the help of her mom - from seeking early sequencing advice to eventually collaborating on online courses, books, and shared experiences. We explore continued learning, evolving as a teacher, and the strange, beautiful blur between being the student and being the teacher. We also dive into real-life stuff:• staying grounded while traveling• balancing teaching and social media work• her Sunday Reset newsletter & setting “rest buffers”• writing a book on Savasana + the restorative lifestyle• practicing what you preach when you’re tired• making time to take care of yourself as a teacher• cultivating inner wisdom + knowing when to use external resourcesLizzie also shares her philosophy on what students actually need, including the idea that “restorative yoga is a subtractive practice.” And stay tuned for a hilarious story about her and her mom recording content in a studio they shared with rappers. This is a warm, honest, and funny conversation about teaching, rest, growth, and finding your own way. Today we have Jenni Rawlings on the podcast, and we had so much fun diving into the technical side of the yoga practice- cues, anatomy, alignment, and how to update your practice to fit your own body so things actually feel good. We talk about her beginnings, how she built her career, and what it’s been like teaching online. We even discovered some Chicago crossover and shared training experiences. We get into movement science, Yoga Alliance requirements, and why there’s so much more to learn beyond a 200-hour training. We talk about the importance of self-inquiry, the structure of Ashtanga, strength, and adding load to the body, and whether we ever believed yoga was the end-all be-all. Jenni also shares about her time running a yoga clothing store, and we look at exercise science, pain, and what strength really means in a yoga context.Find Jenni Rawlings Online:Website: www.jennirawlings.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/jenni_rawlingsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@jenni_rawlingsJoin us at the Castro Room, November 15th from 1-3 PM!Want to support our podcast? A chaotic hello from Bradshaw and Giana, podcasting in person from Giana’s apartment! We kick things off with all the tech issues and our ongoing attempt to be jacks of all trades: filming, editing, and learning to create more professional content. We chat about the purpose of Bradshaw’s visit and how we’re preparing for our upcoming 300-hour online program, along with what we’re most excited to teach and share. We talk about confidence, fandom, mentorship, and all the ways we’re evolving our joint programming and offerings as we grow.We also reflect on the last time we podcasted together in San Francisco and how much has shifted since then. There’s talk about time, settling, and the importance of giving something a year to see how it lands. Giana opens up about teaching in SF for 10 months, and feeling grateful for the opportunities (and her partner!). She also reflects on pulling herself out of a dark place after long COVID and a period of isolation. We reflect on the pandemic years, from the funny to the hard to the life-changing, including how tough it was to be friends back then. Reflecting on the psychological impact of that period, the importance of community, and how wild it is that 2026 is almost here. We share random stories about colorful jumpsuits and standing out, plus a frustration with making a film set!Join us at the Castro Room, November 15th from 1-3 PM!** CHECK OUT OUR 300-HOUR PROGRAM **Upcoming RetreatsTodos Santos, Mexico Retreat: December 4-8, 2025Nicaragua Yoga Teachers Retreat: February 2026Starved Rock Retreat: June 12-14, 2026Amalfi Coast Yoga Retreat: July 25 - August 1, 2026 Portugal Relax by the Sea Retreat: August 4-10, 2026Want to support our podcast? We kick things off in true us fashion: chatting about the seasons changing, a brief (and unnecessary) detour into rigor mortis, Bradshaw trying to order Uber Eats mid-record, and Giana casually moving the recording time to close a sale. There’s even an off-hand joke about sharing a boyfriend and a debate about whether straddle pressing actually counts as pressing (it does- justice for straddle pressers). And just a heads-up: if you’re here for the actual episode, it begins around minute 16. We believe in a proper warm-up.Once we finally settle in, we dive into therapy, identity, and unlearning the roles we grew up with. As two middle kids who landed on opposite ends of the personality spectrum- one a performing tornado of energy, the other a perfectionist who once tried to have no needs. We talk about how we’re now, hilariously, trying to learn each other’s strengths in adulthood.Giana’s finding her voice and escaping decision-fatigue prison; Bradshaw’s learning to not always be “on” and to let other parts of himself shine. We explore the difference between anxiety and intuition, how to feel into your body for clarity, and what inner safety and reparenting really look like. There are laughs, lightly unhinged tangents, a headstand-gone-wrong story, and even a brief wish that brick-laying had been the career path. Through it all, the thread is clear: we’re here, growing out loud, figuring ourselves out, and finding humor and community in the messy, beautiful middle.Join us at the Castro Room, November 15th from 1-3 PM** CHECK OUT OUR 300-HOUR PROGRAM **🌊 Upcoming RetreatsTodos Santos, Mexico Retreat: December 4-8, 2025 Nicaragua Yoga Teachers Retreat: February 2026 (2 Spots Opened)Starved Rock Retreat: June 12-14, 2026Amalfi Coast Yoga Retreat: July 25 - August 1, 2026 Support our podcast: Join Patreon📚 Read the Podcast Blog: The Funny Thing About Yoga on Substack📲 Follow Us: @thefunnythingaboutyoga | @cayayogaschool | @gianagambino | @bradshawwish🌐 More Links: gianayoga.com | bradshawwishyoga.com | cayayogaschool.com Hosted on Acast. Today on the podcast, we’re joined by the amazing Cathy Madeo! We dive into her early days of teaching everywhere, from studios to wherever she could roll out a mat, and how that eventually led her to building a thriving online yoga business. We chat about the signs that it might be time to shift fully online, the ups and downs of social media, staying consistent, and finding growth through persistence. Cathy shares how never giving up (and trying everything to see what sticks) has been key to her success. We also delve into the bittersweet process of transitioning to online classes and making significant changes in your teaching journey. Cathy turns the mic on us and asks about our dreams, which sends us spiraling into a hilarious and honest tangent about our own social media struggles and self-expression online. And of course, it wouldn’t be a yoga podcast without some funny classroom moments. This week, we’re talking all about twisting, but not before diving into changing seasons, finding motivation, the importance of sleep, and Bradshaw’s dating life. Naturally, there’s also a big tangent on Brahmacharya and semen retention (yes, we went there). Then we get into the details of twisting: the misunderstood anatomy, where movement actually comes from, and how to execute it safely in your spine. We unpack bad twist assists, alignment cues, extremes in practice, and the energetic side of things.Giana shares practical cues for helping students twist effectively, highlighting shoulder mobility and spinal isolation, while Bradshaw goes on a tangent about hating seated twists, disliking seated poses in general, and dealing with SI joint discomfort. There’s also a good rant about the myth of “detoxing” through twists and some musing about the energetic movement behind them. It’s a mix of anatomy, philosophy, and a whole lot of curious conversation.Want to support our podcast? Everything feels heavy lately. People are stressed, and teaching through it can feel intense. The world feels weird right now, and showing up for others in the middle of it all is hard. This week we’re talking about processing in public. We’ve touched on this before, but we’re going deeper. What’s appropriate to share, and what’s not? Where’s that line between honesty and oversharing? We talk about full schedules, burnout, and the growing pains of working for yourself, and the constant pull between planning ahead and staying present. Bradshaw opens up about grief, and Giana shares about a no-contact situation and the shared pain that comes with it. We’re really bearing it all in this one, and asking, what are we all running from? And how can we use yoga and its tools to move through it?These conversations change the way we teach. We’re growing, learning, and getting to know ourselves more deeply, and hopefully inspiring that same kind of connection in our students.Want to support our podcast? In this episode, Giana and Bradshaw delve into the growing trend of yoga teachers using ChatGPT to create their class sequences, scripts, and themes. They unpack the difference between using AI as a supportive tool versus outsourcing your own creativity and intuition. Giana talks about developing trust in your own voice, instincts, and body wisdom, saying, “ChatGPT doesn’t have a body. So why are we asking it to tell us how to move ours?”They explore the importance of building confidence as a new teacher and understanding how to do this. They urge listeners to use AI thoughtfully and know how to edit or when to rely on it. Without editing, critical thinking, and embodied experience is thrown out the window, and it actually stunts your growth as a teacher. To put it to the test, they ask ChatGPT to create a 60-minute full-body yoga class and go through the sequence section by section to explain exactly why you can’t outsource AI for this- especially if you want to be a good teacher! It’s not all negative, though; they also highlight the many ways AI can support your teaching career, from simplifying admin tasks and refining marketing copy to sparking ideas for themes, workshops, and other offerings.Expect honest conversation, a few laughs, and a reminder that your real power as a yoga teacher doesn’t come from a perfect script, it comes from your embodiment, your lived experience, and your ability to connect!Support our podcast?
