We often think of environmental toxins as things that can harm us from the outside, but what about toxins inside our bodies? This week, continuing our environmental toxin series I invite the wonderful Kirsty Wirth back to the show to discuss potential environmental toxins in our inner environment, especially the digestive tract. We talk testing, budget options, health practitioner team assembly, lifestyle hacks to embed before seeing a practitioner and the names of specific things to look for in gut/poop tests to investigate with trickier cases. Kirsty is a wealth of knowledge on things that can drastically move the needle in chronic health pictures from neurological challenges, to mental health, gut diseases and behavioral concerns to help people thrive.  Enjoy the show and head to the show notes for more details on Kirsty's work and this week's special low tox swap offers over at lowtoxlife.com/podcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. I remember so well seeing the news break that lego were going to be aiming to be new-petroleum-free by 2030, engaging a huge task force of sustainability experts, scientists and industrial designers to work on this project. Today, some 2.5 years late, I chat to Tim Brooks, ex environmental advisor to the City of London, now with LEGO, on how their work is going towards this goal. We can all move mountains, and the big companies of LEGO's size can effect radical change when they move the needle on how the produce their products, so I hope you enjoy this look into what Lego is working to achieve. As per usual, our show notes, new PATREON supporter page and sponsor offer are available over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Hosted on Acast. Dr Lewis Ehrlich is a highly sought after holistic dentist who graduated from James Cook University (JCU) with the Academic Medal. With a background in professional sport and his passion for holistic health, Lewis focuses on the link between oral health and general overall health in his practice - it's why you'll never hear a bandaid solution for an oral health concern in my interviews with him! Before studying dentistry, he completed a Bachelor of Science at Northeastern University in Boston, USA after receiving a soccer scholarship where he played for 2 years. He then moved to Reykjavik, Iceland where he played professional soccer before moving into dentistry and now practicing at Sydney Holistic Dental.  This show, part 2 of two that I'm recording with Dr Lewis (go back for the 1st one last month!), is the result of my asking the Low tox club chat group and alumni course groups if they had any ongoing concerns and questions about oral health - from teeth (grinding / enamel / cavities) to gums to oral microbiome to jaws to treatments and appliances and preventative health. There I was thinking I was going to be doing a show on grinding and appliance options with ‘a few' questions from you guys but when 100+ questions quickly presented themselves, I changed tack and turned it into a two part “All your holistic dentistry questions” answered. So in this show, part 2, we talk:  Cavities and fillings Preventative oral health Miscellaneous trouble shoots from grinding to tongue ties to geographic spots and so much more! Head over to lowtoxlife.com/podcast for all the details.  Here are the questions answered in this second FAQ with Lewis and we twist and tangent on all things oral care in between:  On fillings and cavity protection:At a dentist a few years ago, my 5 yr old had 3 fillings told me it was bad luck and there was nothing I could do. Dietary improvement was my first thing. What else? I have tried using natural toothpastes and they all cause mouth ulcers and corners of my mouth to crack really bad? I really want to use natural toothpaste but I'm unsure which ingredient may be causing this? Any suggestions?? Thank you.I'd be interested to hear about what toothpaste (glycerine or no glycerine) and/or toothbrush (electric vs manual) he recommends for children. I've read so many different opinions on this topic, particularly in relation to the glycerine in toothpaste issue, so any brand recs would be great. would you mind asking Dr. Ehrlich if there is any actual benefit to using toothpaste, or is it just an added bonus to make your breath fresh and your mouth feel like it's had a good clean because you can "taste" the clean. I read somewhere recently that there's no real benefit to toothpaste, that it's the brushing and flossing that actually is the most important part of the process. On preventative oral health What does he think of Weston Price's research on teeth -diet prevents over crowding, don't remove wisdom teeth, root canals can cause heart disease?Does he believe vitamin d / k2 supplementation universally necessary for kids? How do you change your mouth microbiome, with symptoms such as bad breathe, metallic taste, white tongue, excessive saliva? I know there is a correlation with gut dysbiosis and the bacteria imbalance starting in the mouth. And working on the gut is key to changing the way the gut and body functions, but are there ways to change the mouth microbiome in order to get a head start on changing the gut microbiome.I have receding gums. I'm wondering if this is due to poor diet or brushing my gums too hard ( I like to get it really clean), and what natural remedies I could try before seeing a traditional dentist? Anything to help get kids to look after their teeth...?We've just been recommended to brush with kids fluoride toothpaste and then after rinsing pop more on the back molars that are showing signs of decay. Are there any alternatives? It's my 4yo with the issues. On trouble shooting miscellaneous issues What causes grinding and how to fix?  My son has a ‘geographic' spot on his tongue. ( changes location all the time) What could be the causes? Is it a sign of something more problematic? Teeth clenching and how to stop it! I'm having to wear a mouth guard at night and I've heard miss 4 grind her teethTongue tie - I've recently been told by a holistic dentist that I have a partial tongue tie - had no idea and I'm sure there are loads of people like me. She said it goes hand in hand with jaw clenching and teeth grinding. My question is how important is it to have corrected. I figure I've made it past 50 years of age without knowing - maybe I can let this one slide.Chromogenic bacteria, how does someone get this over night (or the dark coloured appearance anyway)and what's the best solutions for it? If you cannot go to a holistic dentist for whatever reason, what to look for in a dentist or dental practice?Love to know more about breathing and connection with the teeth I am reading that if we don't breathe correctly that's the reason our mouth is crowded etc? Mouth taping for kids. Can you do it? Who do you need to consult/see before it's considered appropriate? My 8 year old has a small jaw and not enough room for his teeth, he has poor teeth as well. his gums have white marks on them above the teeth, would love to know why his gums have these marks. We eat organic only, low tox, Whole Foods diet and lifestyle... can't work it out.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week I'm sharing a bit about what I did in my journey to finally realising my building was water damaged and moving home, as well as some of the decisions we made around leaving things behind, replacing them and NOT replacing anything that wasn't essential. I share how I cleaned the lego, the clothes and the furniture that we were taking and what sorts of products I used. At the end of the show I launch my first month long trial… The Low Tox life is always about gently building awareness around an aspect of life and stepping up where we can once we KNOW. This trial speaks to my desire to keep things spacious and light at home after all the decluttering as well as saving money to recover from the massive expenditure of couch and beds and moving and I'll be asking myself this: Is it useful, beautiful or necessary? My dentist is a legend. He happens to also be the author of his new book “A Life Less Stressed” and boy is it a cracking and important read. Discussing disease, inflammation, the nervous system, homeostasis, carbs, precautionary principle, allergy, pain, fats and proteins it's a comprehensive look at how we can use certain things to our advantage, how not all stress is ‘bad' and how to identify effectively what needs to fall away.Ron talks today with me about how this book came to be, gets deeply personal about his cancer journey, discusses the key principles of the book mentioned above and how to actually succeed at minimising stressors. We also tangent into mercury amalgam fillings and their removal - a question I get asked all the time and - well, frankly, not being an experienced dentist or a dentist at all for that matter - I felt it was the perfect opportunity to seize the day and ask Ron all about it.For the show notes, pop to lowtoxlife.com/podcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Allergies - Nearly 1 in 5 kids has an environmental allergy today, and nearly 1 in 10 has a food allergy. While these differ from person to person in severity, they are a challenge on the mental load, in the home and even more so out and about. My good friend and one of my favourite doctors in the world - she’s SO DANG SMART - Dr Elisa Song @healthykids_happykids and I deep dive into the reason so many families are dealing with allergies and in this comprehensive show, we explore: The biggest factors playing into how we got here with allergies and poor gut health. How the gut microbiome has changed in 100 years and what species we know are critical to healthy histamine and mast cell ‘flexibility’ as we grow. How to be better informed when it comes to antibiotics and how to talk to your doctorTesting and screening optionsTherapeutics - conventional and holisticThe SOS game vs the long game - building resilient health and regulated responses to what we eat and what we’re exposed to in our environments. It is PACKED. I usually say go for a walk in nature, but if your reality is dealing with allergies, it’s PAPER-AND-PEN day today! I hope it’s useful for you and people you love - share it far and wide + if you want to hear the first show we did together look up show #85 on the childhood epidemics of our times. It’s also a doozy full of practical wisdom. And the link to pre-order Elisa’s truly excellent new book is in the bio - her work is seminal in the way she’s put everything together in here. This show is all about emotions. As Cedric Bertelli, founder of the Emotional Health Institute, explains, our culture is obsessed with trying to control our emotions. It turns out however, it is this desire to control our emotions that inadvertently prevents many of us from developing emotional resilience. So, in this show, we unpack: How our responses to situations are often formed from events a long time in our pastWhy emotions don’t make sense and trying to make them make sense is futileWhat happens in our conscious and subconscious at a point of trauma and how can it form long-term imprints? How phobias can be overcome - and it’s not about ‘overcoming’ them. How we can break life-long emotional patterns that things like talk therapy haven’t helped us resolve? It is a fascinating exploration of memories, trauma and emotions, and how we can break unhelpful loops we might be stuck in, and I hope you or someone you know finds it to be as interesting and helpful as I did. Connect with Cedric on the following platforms;Websites — www.cedricbertelli.com; www.emotionalhealthinstitute.org Instagram — @cedricbertelli and @emotionalresolutionFacebook — @EmotionalResolutionWithCedric and @theemotionalresolutioneffect Thank you to this month’s show sponsor for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate continues giving 10% off their Winix Air Purifiers and Dehumidifiers at ausclimate.com.au. What is Frugality felt good? What if it was about abundance and positive mental health and a great contribution to wasting less and doing more of what you love? Well… that is what Jen and Jill from Frugal Friends Podcast have made it about and I love it so much I’ve recorded a show with them. We discuss: Why the negative connotation of frugality and how to flip the script in your life? How does one start to think about living frugally in a way that doesn’t conjure 1 jar with a year’s plastic, making everything from scratch wearing a linen dress in the woods and homeschooling your kids if the stereotype doesn’t resonate? What got you both feeling frugal? Did you grow up that way? A crisis? Awakening?Frugal in the kitchen, walk us through your fave ideas that you love to get people onto when they’re exploring/trying to changeFrugality with appliances and fixing things Frugal living with kids who want ‘all the things like their friends have!’ - how can we make it a potentially positive experience in raising kids? Frugal success - little by little? Lisa Mosconi PhD, renowned neuroscientist with over 200 published papers, says: Menopause is having a moment. She’s right, and she’s written the book to meet that moment. The Menopause Brain, a book being celebrated around the world. Gen X has arrived mid-life, with all the state-of-flux symptoms that come with peri-menopause and menopause and said: Enough! Why are we not talking about this? Why are we being gaslit in Dr’s offices for our symptoms and being offered multiple medications for anxiety, depression and pain, but not having a conversation about what might help us far more, due to outdated medical research claims of overblown HRT risks? We also have been robbed of the exciting potential for embracing the rite of passage into a new chapter, from a spiritual and personal growth perspective. We discuss: Menopause is not a disease, and it’s not just ‘aging’ - it is a neuro-endocrine transition: A biological eventWhat’s happening during this transition and why sex hormones aren’t just sex hormonesThe risks that increase from midlife for women including a discussion around Alzheimer’s DiseaseThe benefits of ‘getting to the other side’ from a resilience and cognition perspective. Was HRT risk ‘fear’ in the late 20th Century overblown? Lifestyle considerations to support us during our transitionValidation for your own experience: A critical piece in the transitionConnect with Lisa on the following platforms:Website — lisamosconi.comInstagram — @dr_mosconiTikTok — @lisamosconiphdGrab a copy of her book, The Menopause Brain available in Booktopia: https://bit.ly/themenopausebrain Thank you to this month’s sponsor for partnering with our show and helping you make your swaps with their special offer: Ausclimate giving you 10% off their Winix Air Purifiers and Dehumidifiers at ausclimate.com.au. How intentionally do you design your life? In this show, that’s what we’re talking about with Chris Guillebeau, who’s a New York Times bestselling author of The $100 Startup, Side Hustle, The Happiness of Pursuit, and other books. During a lifetime of self-employment that included a four-year commitment as a volunteer executive in West Africa, he visited every country (193 in total) before his 35th birthday. Chris designed his life from an early age and loves showing people who feel called to a more unconventional path, potential ways forward - my favourite thing about Chris and why I brought him to us? No Guru complex. There’s a beautiful, gentle style while also calling on us to expose our own hard truths and tap into our gifts. He’s a great encourager in a world of protocols, critics and clickbait, leading us towards something deeper with this one precious life. I hope you love itAlexx Connect with Chris on the following platforms:Website — chrisguillebeau.comSubstack — yearofmentalhealth.substack.comThank you to this month’s sponsor for partnering with our show and helping you make your swaps with their special offer: Waters Co. gives you 12% off all NEW systems - including benchtops, jug, mini, shower filters + Under-sink products with code LOWTOXLIFE.And Ausclimate giving you 10% off their Winix Air Purifiers and Dehumidifiers at ausclimate.com.au. Lizzie Williamson brings joy and positive vibes into every room she enters, and today, she’s here to talk about not only how key movement is for our health, but movement as a joyful thing to do and finding that joy through movement, in a culture that often sees movement as a ‘have to’ and something one has to try and find ‘motivation’ for. Dr Keri Krieger, a doctor of Chinese Medicine and acupuncturist with over 20 years of experience and I met when I was half naked on a treatment table at a retreat. I’ve loved the energy she brings to the health space ever since. Today, she invites us to explore perimenopause as the opportunity of a lifetime to prune away all that doesn’t serve us, tune into our truth to our core, and support this period of great change with good humour,  vulnerability and open dialogue. We discuss: Perimenopause and menopause as medical conditions to ‘treat’ - let’s broaden beyond the view of this phase being a condition. Chinese Medicine sees perimenopause as one of the 3 of life’s ‘Golden Opportunities’. Getting the people who love you onboard through your period of change. Food - the best foods to support your system as your digestion capacity decreasesHelpful pressure points and herbal support in teas and supplementsDating during this phase and the stories we tell ourselvesPerimenopause in our workplaces - a challenge, as well as an opportunity to hone our genius. And more. I’ve been chatting with the Low Tox Life community in DMs and groups lately about that moment when the year settles in and everything feels back to ‘normal’ for many people, especially families with the school year in full swing and no holidays around the corner. Rhythms, routines and getting done what’s got to get done in the week, whether we’re working, at school, or whatever else is going on. I find a lot of gratitude in the mundane. Maybe it’s become I’ve lived through a lot of instability of both health and home and finances through the mould years, or because I moved countries 3 times before I was 5 and then had to live with my grandparents for a bit while my baby sister was really sick and poor mum was at the hospital… The boring routine of a week is actually a great relief and joy for me. But I get it’s not that way for many, and the making of dinners and lunch boxes day after day feels more chore than ‘yay’ - throw endless demands for more ‘fun’ food, more food like so and so is eating, or your kid getting teased for being the ‘real food kid’ and it can be exhausting. Plus? I learnt polling you in my Instagram Stories the other day that most people make - wait for it - INDIVIDUAL MEALS ONE AT A TIME. So, I thought I’d record a show to address all of the things with tips and tricks, an excerpt from my 2nd book to get us jazzed about bucking the system and providing as much real food for our families and ourselves as we can and release a couple of cooking classes. ***Have an AHA during the show? Burn out - Experienced it? Did you know most people don’ rtealise hey’re in it when they are? KNow to recognise the signs? In the modern world there are many things happening to cause a misalignment with our inside and our outside worlds and this misalignment (ever said ‘yes’ to something you really don’t want to do, just to please people, for example?) And today we look at: Values - how knowing yours helps you avoid decision fatigue and people pleasing. How knowing how you LIKE to show up and what feels easy and comfortable as ways to help others, is the beginning of the end of the draining people pleasing phase of your life!Learning to internalise your health compass, rather than always seeking external answers, to start being able to read your personal alarm bells more effectively to avoid burn out. How denial is really common with burn outHow agency can be developed to have more energy and feel through stress more easily.Neha Sangwan, MD, CEO and founder of Intuitive Intelligence, is a physician, engineer, author, speaker, and communication expert. This week’s guest, Dr Maya Shetreat,  indulges my desire to bring us a  BIG conversation this week. We explore the subjects of perimenopause and passage rites in life in general, as well as discuss the bridging of the gap between conventional thinking and mysticism, indigenous wisdom and the risk of its absence in plant medicine trends and traditional, sacred ceremony. We also discuss microdosing psychedelics, meditation and how healing doesn’t have to be an epiphany or explosive ‘moment’ and in fact. We go to all those places and more in one of the most epic shows I’ve brought to the podcast. Dr. Maya Shetreat is an adult and pediatric neurologist who believes we can inhabit multiple identities. She has spoken around the world and been featured in the New York Times, NPR and Dr. Oz - and she also listens and talks to plants every day. She is a mystic and ancient astrologer grounded in mitochondria, the microbiome and mycelial science. She is an herbalist, artist, ceremonialist, urban farmer, and forager. She is the author of two books, The Master Plant Experience: The Science, Safety, and Sacred Ceremony of Psychedelics (2023) and The Dirt Cure (2016) which has been translated into 10 languages.Dr. Maya is an expert in many things and also always endeavors to remain a beginner. Trauma - a buzzword, lots of awareness around it, solutions coming at us from all angles these days. Perhaps rather than being a ‘trend topic’ it’s actually a realisation happening globally that there is a lot of work to do if we want to stop repeating history on personal, cultural and global levels and start experiencing and creating more peace. But how do we: Stop being at war and be of service and in gratitude? Navigate out of the safe, small worlds we often create to protect ourselves when we’ve been traumatised and live large? Stop our stories torturing us or eating away at our creativity and braveryGet risky enough to have tough conversations personally, professionally, politically, and culturally, to break toxic patterns and ‘dirty trauma’ as Yemi puts it. Go deeper into understanding trauma and the perception of it or the definition of it changes around the world. Make peace with dark pastsGet men to feel safe evolving beyond their traumas when so often they’re told ‘chin up, don’t be a wus!’ Yemi Penn has made it her life’s work to muck in and be a part of the many potential solutions through her work as an author, filmmaker, speaker and PhD candidate - a woman wired for impact. We have a brave conversation today about trauma - personal trauma that different people might experience or hear about people close to them experiencing, but also cultural trauma, political trauma, the difference between men and women in trauma and what we know, and how we might work to break trauma lines in a variety of ways. It’s a conversation with questions, ideas, suggestions and exploration, not one with answers and blueprints and rigid opinions or beliefs. We dance in the grey area. Join us! You can connect with Yemi or know more about her work on the following platforms;Instagram:@yemi.pennFacebook:@YemiPennVisit her website yemipenn.com for awesome, helpful freebies! Her book Did You Get The Memo? Is also out now and her Ted Talk is a must. Certainly a must-read for those who feel their lives have taken an unexpected turn and have been left questioning everything! Yemi shares tips, tools and mindset hacks to rip up the memo and create the life you want.Thank you to our Low Tox businesses sponsoring the show and helping you make your swaps with their special offers: The Natural Bedding Company offering you 15% off with the code LOWTOXLIFE  in January 2024 with their curated link of products for us, celebrating their 40 years in business. Aus Climate  offering 10% off with the code LOWTOXLIFE with their Winix Air Purifiers and Dehumidifiers for a healthy home and support in wet seasons, humid climates and with unexpected leaks or weather events. And of course, join me @lowtoxlife on Instagram and share your aha’s in your stories about this or any other show - don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss upcoming shows, too!
