Today we're reaching across the globe to speak with Donna Fields in Valencia, Spain. Donna Fields, originally from New York City, became a teacher in New Mexico, a decade later considered returning home, but took a bit of a detour on the plane back - to Spain - and more than 20 years later is still there. She has been a Primary, Secondary and University teacher, gives workshops on empowering students in their own learning, is an author of books on dynamic activities to help content and language learners transition more fluidly into new information, and has a series of books on creating Phenomenon-Based Learning projects - what is now becoming mandatory in many countries in Europe. She lives in Valencia with one house on the beach and another in the mountains, with a dog, and six wild cats from the hills. Donna sees the world as a teacher and helps learners become curious.  She considers herself a facilitator of learning!  Spain is very conventional, and teachers "talk" to their students rather than offering more participatory experiences.   You don't want to miss this conversation about helping learners transition into knowledge. We love our loyal listeners and we love when they send us ideas.  The idea for this show came from a listener who’s with us today. Curtis Pelham was one of the first teachers in South Carolina to apply for (and receive) funding for his classroom on Donors Choose.  That was back in 2005 and he'll share that story with us. In 2000, Charles Best, a teacher at a Bronx public high school, thought about all the money he and his colleagues were spending on books, art supplies, and other materials for their students. They weren't alone — today, teachers still spend an average of $500 out of pocket on their classrooms each year. Charles figured there were people who'd want to help if they could see where their money was going. He founded DonorsChoose, a website where teachers could post requests for classroom resources, and its been going gangbusters ever since - YAY! 87% of public schools in America have posted a project on www.donorschoose.org 89,119 schools across the country have received their requests - WOOHOO!!! They vet all requests purchase each item ship materials directly to verified teachers Charleston native, Stephen Colbert has been involved since 2007 and is on their board. In 2015 Colbert funded all the SC Donors Choose 1,000 projects totaling more than $800,000 in 375 schools Other celebrities do it too – Seth Rogan, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Serena Williams, Anna Kendrick. It's BACK TO SCHOOL and today Robin and Ron dive into the amazing-ness of Hunter Clendaniel's leadership as CEO of an incredibly successful and innovative charter school in Charleston, South Carolina. Orange Grove Elementary School has been around as long as Robin, both turning 60 this year, so there is much to celebrate!! Teaching was hard before the pandemic, now it's even harder!  Collective energy matters! ABC News recently reported more than three-quarters of the states are experiencing a teacher shortage, highlighting a growing concern among public education and government officials.   Stephanie Bacon is a mother, an educator, and a researcher. She has spent over 20 years in the K-12 educational setting, primarily as a classroom teacher, and also as an instructional coach and association president. Currently, Stephanie is completing her doctorate at the University of Nevada, Reno by researching the role of social and emotional competence and authenticity in the classroom. According to America After 3pm, demand for afterschool programs continues to grow. Today, 10.2 million children participate in afterschool programs. Another 19.4 million children would participate if a program were available. Most school-age children either are, or want to be, in an afterschool program. Lauren Herterich wanted to go to med school and never expected to be in education, yet here she is running a phenomenally successful out-of-school time program at the College of Charleston called Kids on Point. According to the SC Afterschool Alliance, out of school time programs are an essential component of keeping kids safe, inspiring learning, and helping working families. With so much benefit to be gained, it is important that out of school time programs understand and implement research-based best practices. Robin and Ron talk with Susan DeRosa Brandon, one of Robin's childhood friends from Canandaigua, New York who shares oodles of wisdom and advice for new teachers.  In the early 90s, Susan and Robin were at the oh-so-amazing Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary in Charleston, South Carolina where they taught 4th and 5th grades respectively.  This year, Susan retires after 32 years - WOOHOO! MorphMom is a national multimedia platform dedicated to inspiring & ENERGIZING women on their journey to "what's next." Former attorney Kathleen Smith is a mother of three who, like many of us, took time away from her day job to raise her children.  And then after ten years looked around wondering what was next for her. Kathleen LOVED her job as a Juvenile Prosecutor in New Jersey, but she knew going back after all those years was not a logical option for her.  So, now what? Enter her entrepreneurial spirit and an inspirational journey creating a national platform that is changing women's lives every single day, including the recent Charleston event where Robin shared her own story of reinvention and resilience. Gone are the days when a trip to the principal’s office is a negative experience.  At James B. Edwards Elementary School (JBE) in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., students LOVE to visit Principal Robin Fountain because she emanates joy and bursts with positive energy. During this conversation, Robin and Ron learn not only that Robin Fountain’s superpower is being a good listener and building people and strong cultures, but that she is a lifelong learner, pivoting and redirecting when necessary, including the latest Orton Gillingham model being used to reach all learners at JBE. From her first teaching experience in Glasgow, Scotland (I know, right?) to leading the JBE Egrets today, her journey is inspiring and uplifting (and how great that she has the privilege to determine the culture and the energy that permeates into each classroom at JBE).
