Roger Federer’s net worth officially crossed $1 billion earlier this year, according to Forbes. That makes the 20-time Grand Slam winner one of just seven athletes to have reached the three-comma club, joining Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, LeBron James, Junior Bridgeman, Tiger Woods, and Romanian tennis player Ion Tiriac. Most of Federer’s net worth was generated through sponsorship deals with companies like Nike, Rolex, Mercedes-Benz, and Uniqlo, as well as a minority stake in the publicly traded Swiss shoe and apparel brand On, which is valued at $375 million. But every sports fan knows this information. What you may not know is that Federer’s agent, Tony Godsick, is the one who made it happen. After becoming Federer’s agent 20 years ago, Godsick negotiated deals collectively worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In fact, Godsick was the one who helped architect Federer’s departure from Nike, landing deals with Uniqlo and On that are now valued at more than $1 billion. While attending the Laver Cup in San Francisco this past weekend, I had the opportunity to interview Godsick. We talk about his journey with Federer, the real story behind why Nike decided to move on from the tennis legend, and the growth of the Laver Cup — a Ryder Cup-style tournament co-founded by Federer and Godsick. The Chicago Bears have officially ditched their downtown stadium design to build an indoor stadium 25 miles north of the city in Arlington Heights. The Bears say the $2.5 billion project will be entirely privately funded, but that doesn't mean it will be a bad deal. The team is likely to generate more than $1 billion in revenue before the stadium even opens, primarily through the sale of PSLs, luxury suites, and naming rights. Today's podcast breaks down all the details. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Today's episode is a conversation I recently recorded with fellow Substack writer Ethan Strauss on his live show Random Offense. We spent an entire hour dissecting every angle of the Kawhi Leonard-Steve Ballmer-Los Angeles Clippers cap circumvention story. This is one of the biggest NBA scandals of the last several decades, and there is plenty to discuss and debate. Enjoy! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Today's podcast breaks down the $1 billion real estate empire of Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves. Most sports teams are still trying to figure out how to sell more tickets and sponsorships, but the Braves have built a billion-dollar real estate business in the form of The Battery, the team's mixed-use development located outside of Truist Park. I break down precisely how sports teams like the Braves make money. I use data to dig into the team’s most important details — payroll, ticket sales, sponsorships, merchandise and concessions. Then, I focus on The Battery specifically, including how the Braves structured their lease agreements to guarantee revenue increases, why they keep buying up additional property and more. Today's podcast uncovers a billionaire tax trick is influencing record-high sports franchise valuations. President Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill almost single-handedly crushed sports valuations in the United States. But then, some of the country's most powerful team owners lobbied to stop it. I explain how this tax trick works, how sports teams owners were able to stop a new tax provision related to sports franchise acquisitions in the One Big Beautiful Bill and what might happen moving forward. Today's podcast breaks down the NFL's recent deal to give control of iconic NFL Media properties like NFL Network and NFL RedZone to ESPN in exchange for a 10% equity stake in the network. The deal is a groundbreaking equity swap. And while studio shows and streaming rights are nice, there’s one underreported benefit that might be the most valuable of all that I walk through in this episode. Enjoy! Today's podcast looks at the economics behind a new $62 million high school football stadium that has sparked a national debate. Buford High School's new football stadium looks like it could be on a college campus. But beneath the amenities, the stadium's construction is a story of taxes, politics and a shift in the future of high school sports. I explain why these expensive high school football stadiums are being built and, more importantly, how these stadiums are being approved. How are schools financing these projects? Why are taxpayers OK with their hard-earned money going toward athletic teams that their children might not even play for? Who actually owns the stadium? And who stands to benefit from ticket sales and potential naming rights deals? We’ll use Buford High School as an example, but everyone should care about this because it might soon happen in your town too. Enjoy! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Today's podcast looks at Real Madrid's decision to renovate its 75-year-old Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and why the project will go down as one of the best sports business moves of the last decade. I break down how the club's decision to borrow millions for its stadium renovation ultimately resulted in new revenue streams, slashed debt, and changed the way football clubs think about infrastructure. I also review Real Madrid's 2024-25 financials in detail, which include a record $1.4 billion in revenue. Enjoy! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Christine and I discuss insights from her book on Clark's superstardom and her influence on the rise of women's sports, including how the WNBA was unprepared for Clark's arrival into the league, the strange turn of events that led to the WNBA providing charter flights to players after Clark's arrival, why Clark was snubbed from the USA women's national basketball team roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics, and what Christine learned about Clark as a person in the process of writing her book.
